From the Editor Hi Readers, At the time of writing we have just marked the 1-year anniversary of the first lockdown. I saw one comedian on Twitter write ‘I haven’t heard anybody say, where did the last year go’. Beyond the joke I think they may have missed the point. For many of us the last year has been a year lost. Lost experiences, lost jobs, lost businesses, even lost loved ones. With the roadmap in place there are reasons to be optimistic as we want to reclaim our lives but I think we are all feeling the same caution. My own thoughts are that we have to be brave. Embrace the changes we need to make, with vaccines, social distancing, masks and hand sanitising that will allow us to embrace the opportunity to reclaim our lives. As they say, hindsight is a wonderful thing but I suppose this toll has caused us all the be a bit grumpy, maybe it’s the social distancing we have had to maintain but it seems like there is growing gaps in our ability to empathise and understand each other. But what I would say to that is, it was only just over a year ago when #bekind was doing the rounds as a reaction to Caroline Flack losing her life so tragically. Nobody knows what anybody else is going through behind closed doors – so it’s very simple,
just be kind to each other – kindness never hurt anyone. In other news, Bez and Shaun Ryder (Flake and Rafa’s new nicknames!) have made a full recovery! They are sporadically trying to pull us back in the direction of the woods – can’t think why! – however, we have managed to divert their attentions and we have been incident free for 1 month! The Vet will be disappointed – this monthly visit was ensuring their optional extra of a personal Butler for the duration of their round the world tour!! (*I am only joking – our Vets do a brilliant job & they have trained hard for their profession*). At the time of writing, I think the whole of the UK is poised for the first stage of the road map to be executed without a hitch – fingers and toes crossed!

Alfreton & District Heritage Trust
The person behind Nix’s Hill Standing on Nix’s Hill amid the roar of present day traffic it is hard to imagine any connection with an altogether quieter, more gentle form of transport.
Mr Nix then established a Stud Farm and such was his reputation as a Judge, Exhibitor and Prize winner at shows such as the Royal Show at Windsor, his horses became highly sought after being exported to North America and elsewhere. In 1911 he travelled to Argentina as a Judge, such was his status.
We are probably all familiar with Shire Horses, those gentle giants of yesteryear who kept the Country moving before the advent of the motor lorry but how many know how we connect Nix’s Hill with the Shire Horse Society and these majestic creatures. Our story begins in Nottinghamshire in September, 1843 with the birth of John Camm Nix, son of Alfreton man, Adam Nowell Nix, a Publican and Butcher, and his wife Elizabeth Camm. He progressed through School and by 1861 he was at Outseats, Alfreton, living and working on his uncle’s farm which formed part of the Palmer Morewood Estate. Later John Nix was to take over the tenancy and this continued until his death in 1927. It was in the matter of the improvement of the breed of heavy agricultural horses that John Nix became such a well known figure in agricultural circles both nationally and internationally. Being convinced of the utility of the heavy horse he was determined that it should survive and became one of the founders of what is now the Shire Horse Society and for many years was a valued member of the Council.
8
He retained a keen interest in horses right up to his death in 1927 and having left specific instructions, his body was carried on a farm wagon, drawn by two of his favourite horses, to the family vault in Alfreton Churchyard.
Although John Nix was a bachelor, he was essentially a home man. A devout churchgoer and one time member of the Alfreton Freemasons, he liked nothing more than to stand at his gate and watch the world go by. Always dapper and never without his top hat I wonder what Mr Nix would have made of having a road named after him?

Slimming World Recipe Five-Spice Pork Ramen Bowl One thing I have really missed in lockdown has been a certain Japanese food chain… !
Serves: 4
Ready in: 30mins
Syns per serving: FREE
Ingredients:
Method: 1. Put the pork and five-spice powder in a bowl and toss to coat well. 2. Spray a large non-stick frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a medium heat. Cook the pork for 8-10 minutes or until crispy, browned and cooked through, stirring often (you might need to do this in batches). Transfer to a plate and cover with kitchen foil to keep warm. 3. Meanwhile, place a large saucepan over a high heat. Add the stock, baby sweetcorn, ginger, garlic, soy sauce and oyster sauce and bring to the boil. Drop in the noodles and cook for 5 minutes, adding the pak choi for the last 2 minutes. Using tongs or a slotted spoon, divide the noodles, pak choi and baby sweetcorn between shallow bowls, trying to keep each ingredient apart as much as you can. 4. Add the radishes to each bowl, pile the pork in the middle and ladle in the delicious broth. Scatter with chilli, if using, and coriander sprigs to serve.
• 4 lean pork steaks, visible fat removed, cut into small chunks • 4 level tsp Chinese five-spice powder* (see tip) • Low-calorie cooking spray • 1.2 litres hot chicken stock • 300g baby sweetcorn, cut into chunks • 4cm piece fresh root ginger, peeled and cut into matchsticks • 2 garlic cloves, chopped • 1½ tbsp soy sauce • 2½ tbsp oyster sauce • 350g dried rice noodles or egg noodles • 4 large pak choi, quartered • 12 radishes, thinly sliced • Red chilli, to serve (optional) • Fresh coriander sprigs, to serve

Book Review The idea of flesh and blood humans existing alongside what used to be called robots – now artificial intelligence – isn’t new. There have been films and books written about it even earlier than the days of R2D2 in Star Wars. But novels about what will happen when we really do have synthetic humans in our lives at a personal level are having a moment just now. And maybe it’s not that surprising. In reality they are becoming infinitely more sophisticated both in terms of what they look like and how their brains will operate. So the possibility of AI companions, butlers, sex slaves, carers, even scientists maybe, are not quite so remote. Are we on the edge of science fiction becoming real? Machines Like Me by Ian McEwan is one of the several books currently exploring this exciting and maybe scary thought. The artificial human that Charlie, a drifter, buys with an inheritance from his mother, is clever, beautiful and capable of just about anything a person could want from a companion. And maybe a few things they wouldn’t want. It’s fascinating stuff. What makes us human, could we ever replicate what goes on in the human brain and heart? What happens when the rules we think we live by are different to our real lives? There’s some great insight into people and moments of fairly dark humour in this book. Clever and interesting and very very readable.

Pension options for over 55- 's What alternatives do you have at retirement?
Raiding your pension before retirement remains a popular option, with more than 1.3 million savers taking flexible payments from their pensions in the three years since 2015. While the premise of withdrawing 25% of your pension pot tax-free is nothing new, the options you have when you reach the age of 55 have increased. If you're considering taking money out of your pension pot, you've got lots to weigh up, but first of all you need to know what type of pension you have.
Pension types
Pensions usually fall into two different types: occupational or private schemes. Private pensions, such as a stakeholder pension, personal pension or self invested personal pension (SIPP), are money purchase schemes. Occupational pension schemes are further divided into defined contribution and defined benefit schemes - but pension freedoms only apply to defined contribution pensions. Defined benefit pensions - also known as final salary pensions - are seen as the Rolls Royce of pensions as what you receive depends on your earnings when you retire and is not dependent upon investment performance and growth. They are set up by your employer and provide you with a percentage of your final salary at retirement. While final salary pensions do not qualify for pension freedoms, it is possible to convert them into a pot of cash - but beware this is area targeted by scammers and is a high-risk strategy as you will be giving up valuable guarantees. Pension freedoms also do not apply to your state pension.
Options at 55 Leave it untouched
Continuing to save into your pension until the time comes to retire is the default position for most retirement savers in the UK. You can contribute up to £40,000 of your annual earnings towards your pension pot in 2018/19 without paying tax, subject to taper rules which may apply to high earners and which reduce the annual allowance. This cap remains in place for 2019/20 at the time of writing. Doing nothing is usually the best option unless you need the money for something in particular, whether that's to pay off your mortgage or help your grown-up child get on to the property ladder.
Withdraw everything If you did take this extreme step, the first 25% of your retirement savings would be free from tax and the remaining 75% would be taxed at your marginal rate of income tax. This is still the case in 2018/19 - but be aware that doing so could nudge you into a higher income tax band and see you paying 40% as a higher-rate taxpayer or 45% as an additional-rate taxpayer.

Advice to complement your Lifestyle
Take several lump sums -
....
Another option is to take 25% of your pension pot tax-free and leave the other 75% exactly where it is, continuing to grow as an investment into your existing pensions. Whether you pay income tax on taking several lump sums depends on your total annual income in any financial year and the personal allowance. You could withdraw up to £11,850 from your pension pot in 2018/19 without paying income tax on your withdrawals so long as you have received no other income in the tax year. Any amount over this threshold will be taxed at your marginal rate of income tax. This may be useful if you want to stagger your withdrawals over a period of time, such as to the point at which you retire.
Lump sum and drawdown
You could opt to take 25% tax-free after reaching the age of 55, and use the rest to buy a flexible income drawdown product. As this is an investment, you should be aware that the value of your product can rise and fall at any time and you should accept the element of risk involved.
Lump sum and an annuity
Buying an annuity works in a similar way to buying a flexible income drawdown product in that you can withdraw 25% of your pension pot without paying tax and purchase an annuity with the rest. The concept of buying an annuity is sound as they usually pay you a fixed annual income up until you die, but they have fallen out of favour with retirement savers in recent years. If the idea of having a fixed annual income for the rest of your life appeals to you, be sure to shop around for the best annuity rates.
Mix and match
It's possible to consider mixing and matching your pension options, such as using some of your pension pot to buy a flexible income drawdown product and some to purchase an annuity. Various other combinations are available but be sure to seek professional advice before doing so as this is by far the most complex option.
Seek help with your decision
When the time comes to retire, what you do with your pension savings is one of the most important decisions you will make as it will affect the rest of your life. The Government offers free guidance for over-50s through its Pension Wise initiative, which was introduced after the pension freedoms were brought in. However, the guidance merely outlines your options in a similar way to this brief guide and you should speak to our experts for tailor-made advice to suit your situation. Professional advice is also compulsory if you want to transfer defined benefit or safeguarded benefits worth £30,000 or more.

Rotary Club of Alfreton Donate Laptops to Local School The Rotary Club of Alfreton were delighted to help support Woodbridge Junior School in Alfreton during lockdown by providing 4 HP Chromebook laptops. With the pandemic placing additional strain on schools limited resources, the demand for laptops has far outstripped the availability. Up to three quarters of pupils have been learning from home often without the right equipment, placing additional strain on pupils, teachers and parents alike. With the club keen to help they generously agreed to fund the purchase of the laptops to help ensure pupils don’t fall further behind. The club has been involved with Woodbridge School for quite some years and has provided an Eco Greenhouse, been Santa for Christmas Parties, Class reading involvement work and experience talks and hopes to continue in the future when restrictions are lifted. With schools returning the laptops will still be much coveted as they will be used to support children’s wider learning, making use of online reading programmes and digital maths study tools. If you want to get involved or find out more about the club visit the website at www.alfretonrotaryclub.org.uk or find them on facebook @ rotaryalfreton

Campaign Group Exploring ‘Cutting Edge’ Alternative to Solar Farm Proposal CAMPAIGNERS against a massive solar farm between Alfreton, Oakerthorpe and Shirland are working on proposals for an alternative green energy scheme for the area. Save Our Countryside Action Group (SOCAG) is opposing plans by Kronos, a UK subsidiary of a German energy company, to build a 325-acre solar farm with panels up to 2.8 metres high. CUTTING EDGE ALTERNATIVE As an alternative, SOCAG has engaged experts to carry out an audit of buildings around Alfreton to discover which buildings could be suitable for lightweight ‘solar film’ which could be installed on rooftops. The new technology is ‘cutting edge’ and being developed by British companies. SOCAG, which now has more than 1,300 supporters on Facebook, wants to work with local councils and other interested parties on ‘environmentally responsible’ green energy schemes – rather than the proposal by Kronos. John Cleary, chairman of SOCAG, said: “We’re very keen to work with the local authorities and British-based cutting edge technology companies to promote environmentally responsible community energy projects that deliver economic and green energy benefits directly to the local community. “Whilst opposing the Kronos development on legitimate planning grounds reflecting local people’s concerns, we will also be undertaking an audit of the built environment around Alfreton to provide empirical evidence of the potential for lightweight solar film to be deployed on roofs and buildings. ‘Once the (local) councils see the data we’re convinced they’ll take up the challenge county-wide and deliver the solar energy output local people want without ruining our landscape, heritage and biodiversity for generations to come.’ Mr Cleary added: “The feedback we’ve had from the local community clearly indicates that everyone understands the role solar can play in the renewable energy mix.”
32
COMMUNITY
FOCUS
As part of its work, SOCAG has engaged with three heritage, landscape and ecology experts. Their concerns include how the proposal would have a ‘considerable adverse impact on Alfreton Hall – a grade II listed building’ – as well as harming ‘the landscape character of Alfreton Park’. It would also be visible from the Grade I listed ruins of Wingfield Manor, a site among the most important 2.5% of nationally-significant buildings, and is likely to cause ‘substantial harm to wildlife’.
Awaiting INFO So far, there have been more than 625 objections against the proposed solar farm, which is split into separate planning applications being considered by Amber Valley and North East Derbyshire Council. The scheme is opposed by Alfreton Town Council, Shirland and Higham Parish Council, South Wingfield Parish Council, Derbyshire County Council leader, Cllr Barry Lewis, and Amber Valley MP Nigel Mills. Amber Valley and North East Derbyshire are continuing to take account of objections and are advising anyone with further comments to upload them via the online planning portals, or send them by email or post. Application reference AVA/2020/1224 Contact: Save Our Countryside Action Group by emailing socenquiries@gmail.com
At Voice Magazines we were pleased to receive a range of feedback to the previous article about the proposed Solar Farm Development. As advocates of environmental causes we are delighted to see SOCAG actively engaging in looking for alternative green energy solutions which fits in with the local area. Vintage Rambles a with raFf lake and
This walk originally featured in the magazines back in May 2014. Thank you to Terry from Alfreton Ramblers Club, who submitted the original. We have changed the shorter route slightly to make use of a nice path up to the Manor, avoiding a couple of fields, which can be particularly muddy at the moment. One of the great things about this walk is that there are two options; a shorter walk (marked in green) which takes you right up by the Manor or another longer walk (marked in red), which gives you a great view of the manor from up on high. Enjoy!
3.5/4.5 mile circular from South Wingfield, around Wingfield Manor A moderate and varied walk for you and your dog. The route should take around 2/2.5 hours. The route has a couple of decent inclines and there are stiles to cross. There are a few stretches of road so take care. The terrain is generally good but as with all walks if it has been wet there will probably be some muddy sections so a good pair of boots or wellies as always is highly recommended.

Alfreton Cricket Club As another season edges closer to the Asha Oval, Alfreton Cricket Club look forward with optimism towards April 17th and the challenges that the 2021 season will bring. With the difficulties and disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic last year, the return of a full competitive season is a welcoming thought for many as it brings some form of normality back to life. Established in 1927, the club has 3 senior teams competing in the Derbyshire County Cricket League and also has a thriving junior set up. The 1st Team play in Division One of the DCCL league and welcome back two former players in Tom New and Elliot Bowles after re-signing for the upcoming season. Captain Jake Simpson and his side begin the season by welcoming local rivals Morton CCC to the Asha Oval. This game looks to be an exciting opener to the season, with the two clubs finishing 1st and 2nd last year in a shortened North/South split league. The 2nd team have had a change in captaincy this season. With former captain James Fletcher stepping down, Callum Spencer has taken the reigns for the upcoming season. After mixed performances last season in the shortened North/ South setups, Spencer will look to rally the team to kick on and really push this year. The 2’s make the
trip to the picturesque Stainsby Hall CC, where they will look to make a strong start to the new Division 4 North campaign. The 3rd team also begin the new campaign on the road, with a trip to Bakewell CC in Division 7 North. Skipper Jamie Hillyer has a strong blend of experience and youth at his disposal and will be hoping the strong youth set up that has been with the club for years will come into fruition this season to really push the 3’s up the table. They make a return for the majority of their home games to The David Nieper Academy after a couple of seasons absence. Despite currently being unaware of when our training sessions can start, the season currently will be starting on time. Whilst optimism of a successful season surrounds the club, the optimism for some form of normality for everyone involved with Alfreton CC is even more welcomed, and the opportunity to be back amongst friends again is exciting. The club are open for sponsorship opportunities for the upcoming season and if you are interested please contact the club through its social media pages! Hopefully by the time the next update is provided we are prepared for the new season, as a community we are all one step closer to normality but for now, stay healthy and stay safe!

HOME IMPROVEMENTS
MAXINE START
The nights are getting lighter. The days are getting longer. The spring bulbs have started to awaken, and dare I mention it, Lockdown has started to ease. It seems we can begin to look forward, with hope and the excitement of very soon, doing the simple things that we once took for granted. Hugs, seeing loved ones, and rebuilding our social connections Whilst we’ve all been part of the same storm, we’ve all lived it in very different boats. What I mean by this, is that everyone has experienced this past year very differently. One common theme that brings us all together though, is that on some level we have all dealt with worry, stress and negative emotions. Anxiety about your health, or loved ones, financial worries, or maybe you, or someone you know has experienced poor mental health. Chronic stress leads to an increase in a hormone called Cortisol. We have around 50 hormones circulating around our body, and they act as messengers from the brain, to tell our cells and organs what to do. All these hormones work together, so if we get too much or too little of one hormone, it can create chaos with all the others.
So why am I telling you this you ask? Lets go back to hugs, family, friends, and….. YOU’ Maybe you have been looking after a neighbour, elderly relative or home schooling. Or perhaps living quite an isolated existence through working from home or shielding. So now might be the perfect time to put yourself higher up the priority list. The place to start for most people would be to work on the quality and quantity of your sleep. Amongst other things, sleep influences mood, immune health, and weight. You burn fat while you sleep! •
Try to get yourself into a routine of going to bed and getting up the same time at least 6 days per week.
•
Aim for 7-8 hours of unbroken sleep per night
For example:
•
Limit food and drink 2-3hours before bed
An increase in Cortisol, decreases Melatonin which promotes sleep.
•
No phones, tv, laptops within at least an hour of sleep.
It can lower Serotonin, which in turn can lower mood.
•
Implement a relaxation routine, bath read etc.
It causes havoc with insulin levels, which have an impact on sugar cravings, which can lead to weight gain.
If you want to lose weight or improve your mood, get to bed on time!
So little wonder, through Lockdown some of us have had trouble sleeping, feeling low, and putting on weight. And if to top it off if you happen to be female and over 35, another hormone called Oestrogen will be in decline, meaning there’s more susceptibility to this chaos!!

The Other Lambretta Boys
In the 1960s and early 70s the newsrooms were full of stories featuring Mods and Rockers fighting on the beaches and promenades of England, the Rockers on their BSA’s, Triumphs and Nortons; the Mods on their Vespas and Lambrettas. Their conflicts hit the headlines not only in this country but throughout Europe and beyond. But there were other Lambretta boys who never made News at Ten and I was one. On my 16th birthday, my maternal grandparents handed me £100 and told me to use it wisely. I did. I wandered down the street and bought a second hand Lambretta SX200 from a local centre half of ill repute. I would have tried to haggle the price down but thought better of it. Back then if you saw a young man with missing teeth, a broken nose and concussion you could have a good bet that it was a local centre forward who had recently played against him. His name will stay anonymous...but every ex footballer aged between 60 and 75 will know exactly who it is It had a Union Jack seat. I had a Union Jack crash helmet. Some people thought I looked cool... the great majority thought I looked like a t**t. I’ve never been fitter than when I owned that Lambretta; I pushed it further than I rode it!! I had a beautiful girlfriend at the time who lived

in Heage Road In Ripley. Sadly she was somewhat less beautiful when she eventually dumped due to the fact that every time time I leaned forward to kiss her goodnight I cracked the bridge of her nose with the peak on my patriotic helmet. My best mate also bought an SX200. By this time I was an experienced rider having had mine 3 days...so I decided to take him on his first run out. All was going well until we got to the first traffic lights and, as I stopped at the red he came hurtling by on the pavement and smashed into a pile of builders sand. I’d taught him how to start it but omitted to explain where the brakes were. We were The Other Lambretta Boys!! More next month.

Mike’us sings M
Another tale of years gone by from the memory of ‘George’. This month is the story of Tommy whose story became legend and whose legend turned into myth. Mike is always glad to hear from you at mike. musings@outlook.com
More of George’s Footballing Tales (as told to him whilst sitting on his grandad’s knee)
It is very rare these days for anyone involved in football to spend their entire career at just the one club, but that is exactly what Horace Twigg did. For fifty seasons, initially as player but later as an official, Horace was what a lazy journalist today would describe as ‘Mr Hacademical’. If anything of importance was to happen at the Hilcote Harena during that period, Horace would undoubtedly be involved in some way. His then young grandson, a willing listener to Grandad Horace’s recollections, recently told me about Thomas Palfreyman. This chap would eventually become the sports correspondent for both of the local newspapers of the day viz., the B Winning Beacon and Blackwell Bugle plus the regional Bolsover Bulletin, and provided locals with news and gossip from within the Club. His match reports, particularly from away games, were eagerly anticipated as he not only gave a detailed account of how well the Hacademicals had fared, but an insight into what it was like to travel to such exotic Derbyshire locations as Riddings, Pinxton and Pye Bridge. For those living in the Hilcote/Blackwell area this was like hearing of another world. Apparently he was football mad as a boy but was sadly handicapped with what in those days were called ‘two left feet’ and was never going to be good enough to play the game at a high level. Horace, one of Thomas’s heroes, lived next door to the Palfreymans, and taking the young fellow under his wing, arranged for him to sell programmes outside the Harena on match days.
To advertise please call 01773 549 035
Thomas was ‘over the moon’ (NB - long before it became a footballing cliché!) and enthusiastically took to his new duties. Come rain, hail or shine, he would be outside the Harena at 12 noon in anticipation of the crowds turning up for the 3.00pm kick off. After one particularly wet and windy Saturday afternoon, Horace asked if the Club could supply a tent to keep the youngster (& his precious copies of the Hacademicals Herald) dry. They were happy to do so and for a couple of seasons, what became known as Tommy’s Teepee, was a welcome sight for supporters as they drew close to the stadium. Unfortunately, on one particularly wild November afternoon, a strong gust of wind uprooted the tent and poor Tommy had all on just to save his programmes from being scattered to all corners of the district. As for the ‘teepee’, it was last seen just clearing the top of Herrod’s Hill, heading in the direction of The Urals. Undaunted, Tommy still managed to sell every one of his stock of 500 programmes on that fateful day, and at a farthing each, the proceeds were used by grateful Club officials to construct a customised building for him. In time this came to be called Tommy’s Tin Hut, and it is claimed that over the border in Nottinghamshire, this became the model for Selston’s own Tin Hat.

We love to hear from our Client Check out the below Testimonial! Testimonial from Miss Dickson “I can’t speak highly enough of AHM” You can tell a lot about a company by the way it responds when things go wrong.... Not long after having her new bathroom installed by AHM, Miss Dickson was horrified to discover that her shower had leaked into her downstairs neighbour’s flat. “I was mortified,” she said. “And my neighbour was not happy at all.” Unfortunately, while cleaning the shower earlier that day, Miss Dickson had managed to dismantle the waste pipe, allowing the water to flow freely downstairs. “My brother-in-law is in the trade and he came round to have a look. He couldn’t understand how I’d managed to remove the pipe! He said I needed to ring AHM straight away. Personally, I didn’t want to trouble them, but I knew it needed sorting out. So I called Peter.” Peter, an AHM surveyor, had been Miss Dickson’s main point of contact throughout the project. He tried to arrange for someone to come the next day but they couldn’t, so Peter himself went to the house. “Peter was fantastic,” Miss Dickson explained. “I cannot speak highly enough of him.” But even with the repair done, there was some ground to make up with the downstairs neighbour. “It was a difficult situation,” Miss Dickson acknowledged. “I apologised and sent her some flowers, but she was understandably quite upset. “Anyway, the next day we were talking and it turned out she needed her bathroom doing too. She came to look at mine and must have been impressed with it, and with the stories I’d told her about the aftercare AHM had provided, because now she’s getting hers done!” Miss Dickson’s sister and brother-in-law were also impressed with AHM. “They said that based on the
www.ahminstallations.co.uk info@ahminstallations.co.uk
way Peter treated me and how hard they worked installing the bathroom, that want to use them to get theirs done too.”
Before
When choosing a bathroom company, Miss Dickson started off looking at firms she’d seen advertised on TV but said “the reviews about the aftercare were awful”. Sensibly, Miss Dickson got two quotes. “To be honest, I would never have bought from the other company even if they were cheaper, because it was very much a hard sell. Peter, on the other hand, listened to me and made helpful suggestions.” To start with, Miss Dickson was concerned about the installation. “Peter picked up on my concerns straight away. I was worried about not being able to use my bathroom, and how long it would take. He said, they couldn’t tell me exactly how long it will take because they don’t know what they’ll find, but all being well it will be 5 to 7 working days.” In fact, the fitters arrived on the Monday and were finished by the Thursday. And to top it off, Miss Dickson got a surprise delivery for referring two new customers. “I got a bunch of flowers delivered to my door from AHM! For someone who’s as isolated as I am, that really made my day. Thank you so much. I can’t speak highly enough of you as a company and I really hope the Covid situation doesn’t affect you too much.”

GARDENS
Gardener’s Calendar You may have been tempted into sowing some seeds indoors – and why not - but annual flowers such as nasturtiums and foxglove can be grown from seed outdoors now – and you can start bring your indoor seedlings out (during the day) to get them hardened off. When putting seeds directly into the garden, it’s important to be sparing – about a finger’s width apart per seed in a shallow drill – you can use a cane to create the drill according to the depth instructions on the packet. If you over-fill the drill you risk the plants damping off due to overcrowding – and effectively you’re wasting seed. The earth should be crumbled to a fine tilth and not too wet. Cover with fine soil or a peat free compost and then with fleece. This will hopefully keep the soil warm, but also stop pigeons and other birds using your seed drill as a takeaway. You can secure the fleece with sticks or by spading the edge down.
r
If you want a head-start with planting it’s absolutely okay to go for plug plants from a garden centre or online – not everyone wants to grow from seed. Just make sure they’re kept in the right conditions on the container until it’s safe for them to go out. Daffodils should be deadheaded after flowering but allow the foliage to die back naturally – no tying it in knots.
TOP TIP! Spike your lawn with a garden fork or spike shoes to give the root of the grass room to breathe 06/11/2018 18:16
