From the Editor This month I’m not going to talk about the dreaded ‘C’ word and I’m also not going to mention any bingo words, such as ‘restrictions’, ‘lockdown’, ‘rule of 6’ etc etc. It hasn’t gone away, it has affected everybody’s lives in one way or another, we shouldn’t be complacent but that said, I, like many of you, want my life back! And this month has seen the return of the shops. I’m sure that you’re all aware by now that I am passionate about small business and that it is synonymous with ‘Shopping local’, which has never been more important than currently. Many of our local businesses have been unable to open and as such trade. The stress that they have endured trying to keep the wheels on, has at times been too much to bear and many shops & businesses, big and small, have fallen along the way. Having felt the pain ourselves to some degree (although we were fortunate enough to limp along from home), the people in these industries are my absolute heroes. The adaptability, resilience and fortitude that every business owner has shown, should be celebrated and the very least we can do is support them in their comeback. Liam and I popped down to Alfreton Market during the opening week on a Saturday and met the traders, you can read all about our experience in our Alfreton & Swanwick editions and online. I may have mentioned this before, but when I was a kid, I had a stint on my cousin’s cheese stall and it proper gave me the bug! I love markets, car-boots, fairs etc and I really love trading on them. Having spoken with many of the traders, we found such a mixed bag between, longevity, products sold, whether they kept running throughout lockdowns and how they had to adapt but what was apparent was the resolve of all these people to carry on. It was also wonderful to see a couple of start-up businesses which began trading through lock-down and are working hard to build a business from it. I truly think that through dark times, opportunities arise and sometimes, we talk more about what we’ve lost than the successes that we have gained. I would

urge anyone who spots an opportunity, to grab it with both hands and with that in mind, Alfreton Market has some cracking deals for crafts and start-up businesses & I believe that most local markets have similar incentives – so if your dream is retail, why not give them a call! In other news and in the same vein, local elections – use your vote and use it wisely and don’t try and read anything into that other than – we only get a say if we turn up and vote, irrespective of your persuasion! We did want to run a feature about all the local elections etc but decided against it for fear of vitriol from the keyboard warriors who assume my position without question! I’m off to enjoy the sunshine and visit some local independent traders #shoplocal ….it’s our future!!

THE RAILWAY THAT WAS & THE RAILWAY THAT WASN’T The Railway that Was and the Railway that Wasn’t An Alfreton mystery, or is it? The Railway Hotel was built on King Street, Alfreton, and opened in 1901, it is said on the site of an ale-house and farm owned by Thomas Painter. The original pub having been demolished in 1899. Certainly Thomas continued his occupation as an innkeeper and farmer, and is recorded as such in the 1901 census. That doesn’t help though in trying to establish why a pub would be named The Railway when there was no apparent railway connection. One popular theory is that The Railway Inn was built in preparation for a planned ‘Electric Tram Railway’ from Nottingham to Mansfield via Ripley, Alfreton and Sutton in Ashfield. It was the era of tramway construction of that there is little doubt but the nearest such a system got to Alfreton was at Ripley where the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Tramways Company service terminated. The line operated from 1913 until 1931 and the trams will be forever known as the Ripley Rattlers. The line was considered very dangerous and even D.H. Lawrence himself commented on the experience of taking a ride on them! Perhaps then, Alfreton was fortunate to escape!

Perhaps we need to go back to the Parish Church of St Martin of Tours on the 1st April, 1764, which saw the baptism of one Benjamin Outram, the son of Joseph Outram and his wife Elizabeth who resided on King Street, Alfreton. Benjamin began his career assisting his father, Joseph, who described himself as an “agriculturalist” but this covered many duties from arbitrating in the many disputes which arose from the enclosures acts to advising on land management and surveying for new mines. In this, he was scrupulously honest and well respected. When William Jessop was approached to design and build the Cromford Canal he therefore found an extremely able assistant in the 24 yearold Benjamin. Building the canal, particularly Butterley Tunnel revealed substantial mineral deposits including coal and iron-stone. This was the beginning of the Benjamin Outram & Co. ironworks, which began trading in 1790 and subsequently became known as The Butterley Company. Outram became the leading advocate in the construction of tramways using L-section rails, which were manufactured at his ironworks together with all the waggons. His first tramway was a line, just over a mile in length, to carry limestone from quarries at Crich to Bullbridge Wharf on the Cromford Canal for use by his works. Sadly Benjamin, undoubtedly, a well respected and accomplished Engineer was to die relatively young in May of 1805. Sadly Benjamin Outram’s Alfreton connection is largely ignored, save for the long demolished Outram Terrace, in itself a distant memory. Have we solved our mystery?

So are we any further forward in solving our mystery?

Bess of Hardwick - Part 3 Royal Relationships Part 3 - The previous two articles about Bess of Hardwick have focused on the material side of her life and legacy, but what was she like as a human being? We can’t know for sure, but her ascendancy to the highest echelons, and her ability to hold onto her wealth, give us some hints. In modern parlance she would be called driven, shrewd, ambitious, perhaps ‘money grabbing’. She was probably all of these things, but she also appears to have had an uncanny ability to extricate or distance herself from scandal…particularly Royal scandal.

lived, when Bess found herself again embroiled in a royal scandal after she arranged for her daughter to marry the son of yet another claimant to the English throne. The Queen was furious when she found out a child was already on the way, which had it been a boy, could have held some title to the crown. That child, Arabella, ultimately became the focus of Bess’s dynastic plans.

In 1558 when Elizabeth Tudor came to the throne, Bess was married to Sir William Loe (her 3rd husband) and through him she secured a place at the young Queens court. At 31 she would have been one of the oldest in the household and likely had a personality similar in strength to Elizabeth.

The friendly relationship Bess had enjoyed with the Queen of Scots; they spent many hours together working on impressive needlework projects; deteriorated when she discovered Bess’s dynastic meddling which could have affected her own sons claim to the throne. Claim and counter claim of seduction and adultery were made, and the Earl of Shrewsbury declared he could no longer live with Bess who fled to Hardwick.

The first scandal Bess became embroiled in involved the Grey family, potential claimants to the English crown. Katherine Grey had secretly married her cousin Edward Seymour, another claimant to the throne, and was pregnant, a fact she confessed to Bess. When the Queen discovered the situation she immediately suspected Bess of conspiring against her and locked both her and Katherine in the Tower. Freed several months later Bess was sent back to Derbyshire in disgrace. Following the death of husband number 3 and the acquisition a couple of years later of husband number 4; the Earl of Shrewsbury; Bess was catapulted back into court life in 1558 when Shrewsbury was appointed keeper of Elizabeth’s cousin and rival, Mary Queen of Scots. Although initially wary of Bess, Elizabeth was won over by her dutiful approach to the incarceration of Mary. The rapprochement was however short

Arabella herself eventually tired of her grandmother’s machinations, and in 1602 she decided she would find her own husband. Her choice of Edward Seymour (Katherine Grey’s grandson) was a foolish one inspiring the wrath of the Queen. For once Elizabeth believed Bess’s assertion that Arabella had acted independently. Arabella was disowned by her Grandmother shortly before the Queen’s death in 1603. Bess herself lived until 1608.

Alfreton Market

Back open and ready to give you a warm welcome!

This month we were contacted by Katie from Alfreton Bluebells, who have a regular stall on Alfreton Market. She invited me along to meet the traders and see how they are adapting to live after lockdown. I was really impressed by the mix of great value highstreet staples, such as the fruit and veg stall, butchers and cafe alongside the stalls offering unique products,

gifts and crafts and hat really impressed me was the quality and price of the goods on sale. We were shown around by Vicki, the market manager, who explained the measures they have taken in light of covid restrictions, including implementing a oneway system, and she introduced us to the stall holders:

Stuart and Phil turned their passion into a business when they started off selling the excess plants they grew in their garden and now they have a stall each day of the marke t as well as selling plants on Facebook. The friendly and knowledgeable Stuart told us that they work really hard to make sure the plants they sell are not available elsewhere. They also sell a range of aromatherapy diffuse rs and attractive household items such as faux leather animal doorstops (we couldn’t resist

and picked up a very fancy fox for ourselves!)

Book Review Lots of people seem to have found an increased interest in nature and the countryside during the past year, whether it’s been through TV programmes like Springwatch which have kept us in touch with what’s happening in the big wide world outside our own four walls, or more awareness of global warming or what happens when we don’t balance human needs with what the planet can take. So James Rebanks’ books about his family farm in Cumbria seem to reflect an emerging mood to see if we can make things better. He wrote The Shepherd’s Life back in 2015 and followed this with English Pastoral: An Inheritance, published last year. Both are beautiful, unsentimental, passionate tales of a tough way of life which deserves to be taken heed of. The author is the son of a shepherd, who was the son of a shepherd and the family has lived and worked farms around the Lake District for four generations. They live by the seasons and farming is not something they do for a living, it is their life. They work through Christmas and birthdays, the children grow up knowing things that city kids can’t hope to learn – including that you need a “get up – get out” mentality , as in get out into the outdoors, and the first rule is to look after the animals and the land. Mr Rebanks may be a born farmer, but he’s also a born writer with a fantastic eye for the beauty of the country. This isn’t All Creatures Great and Small, there’s no whimsy, instead it leaves you with a real appreciation of the fells and the people who work them – and of the lessons we maybe need to learn if we are to improve our time here.

“A great year for the Peak Mortgages and Protection Clan Peak Mortgages and Protection in Milford, Belper have had few big changes over the last few months! We have recently allowed clients back into the office and we are still Derbyshire’s top rated mortgage and protection company when it comes to Google reviews which is fantastic. We are still offering zoom appointments for our appointments as this has proved to be easier and preferred by most of our clients, but we are also allowing people to come and see us in our office now – socially distanced of course! Most of us are back in the office full time which is great, as we can finally see each other properly rather than just over a screen. Probably the most exciting thing which has happened recently has been the fact that the Peak name has set up a wills and estate business which has been created by Sam and Rhys! This means we are now running two main businesses under the Peak name; the original Mortgage and Protection business, and now Wills and Estate Planning. Each business is on both Instagram and Facebook so why not give them a follow! We also have our Peak communities page on Facebook which every month celebrates two local businesses with an award to support them during a year of hardship and to recognise their hard work.

Rhys featured in The Times newspaper in April as part of vouchedfor’s Guide To The UK’s Top Rated Financial Advisors and we were also awarded with a trophy! Furthermore, to stay on the topic of awards, we were excited to find out that we have won two awards at the 2021 UK Enterprise Awards, which are: Mortgage Advisors of the Year 2021 – Derbyshire and the Distinction Award for Client Service Excellence 2021! We are still donating money every month to our 2021 chosen charity, Lauren’s Legacy, and have plans for an outdoor cinema event in August at the Rugby Club in Belper. So, when it comes to deciding on who to go to with queries relating to mortgages or protection (and now wills and estate planning), why not go to the local business who you know support your local community and consistently deliver for their clients?

The team is now at 13 people and we have also had peak puppies!

WELCOME BACK TO

THE HIGH STREET This month we wanted to welcome back all the businesses on our local high streets. They have had a rough year not only worrying about their health but also their livelihoods and as such ‘Shopping local’ and has never been more important than now. Our local shops, traders and businesses have been hit hard by Covid-19 and they desperately need our help if they are to survive. Please don’t assume that because lockdown is ending, they are out of the woods. This is make-or-break time for so many businesses. Local businesses are your friends, your neighbours, the parents of the kids at school, the guy from the pub and the nice lady who walks her dog down the park. They are your local community. And the money spent with local businesses stays in the local community, to be spent again and again. Rather than the money spent at the big shops, which mostly leaves straight away. So be brave and be impulsive. Pop down to your local shops, market or pick up that phone today and make that booking. It really is the difference between our local businesses surviving and disappearing, perhaps for good this time!

PET SERVICES

Support Local Businesses! The ‘pandemic’ may not be over yet - actually it may never be completely over, as viruses are pesky wee blighters that continually adapt and change - but at least we can now get out and about with a little more freedom. Shopping is one of the things that many people say they have missed during the repeated lockdowns. Supermarket food shopping and online browsing doesn’t hold a candle to mooching round actual shops…well for some people anyway! Evidence of this ‘must go shopping syndrome’ (MGSS) was all over the news when the restrictions were lifted, with multiple images of people queuing to get in the likes of Primark, other city centre department stores and out of town retail parks. Great for those stores (and their shareholders!) but what about the small traders on your local high streets. The one man (and woman) bands who have struggled to survive during the crises, often with very little help from government. Some of these small local retail outlets may have managed to stay open during lockdown, the ones providing essential services anyway, please don’t let them down now the economy is reopening, by heading elsewhere! What about the cafes, hairdressers, barbers, beauticians, gift shops, and the myriad other small shops you can find in every town and village? Some haven’t survived, some may still find themselves unable to continue even though clientele is returning, and others will be testing the water - can they make up for the devastating losses of the last year, or should they give up? The people who run these businesses are our friends, often our family, they are the lifeblood of our local communities and we cannot afford to lose them and their businesses. According to website

40

www.indieretail.uk, stats show that for every £1 spent with a local, independent business, between 50p-70p circulates back into the local economy. That same pound spent in a retail chain will see a mere 5p trickling down to local level, it’s a company’s shareholders who ultimately benefit. Don’t kid yourself that your small spend won’t make a difference - it will! An article in The Independent just before Christmas 2020 said that, according to Visa, if we all spent £5 extra per week with small businesses it would help to keep them open in the long term. It should be a no brainer really! Spend your hard earned cash in your local shops whenever you can. OK, maybe you have missed a little retail therapy in a shopping mall or large city centre - indulge yourself if you must, but remember that without your custom, local shops will close. If you don’t want to see your town or village denuded of its independent retailers and becoming a ghost town of boarded up shops, you need to spend your money there. Simples. So a fiver a week in your local shops, or a decimated local high street. Your choice.

t u o e b y a M il t t u Ne’e r c a s t a c lo

As a Derbyshire lass, this is something my grandparents always used to say. May is here. Its time to start thinking about delving into our summer wardrobe. How does that make you feel? After the year of uncertainty, we’ve all experienced, you’d definitely be forgiven if some of last years clothes are a little snug. We’d also be forgiven if when trying to lose a few pounds, finding it very hard work or even impossible. Through lockdown, our behaviours will have changed. Perhaps our activities levels have changed, eating patterns may have become erratic, maybe we’ve been emotional eating through stress or boredom. In the past, eating less, and exercising more may have worked for you, but when we’re chronically overwhelmed, worried, not sleeping, or not as young as we used to be, this approach doesn’t work as well. Weight loss can be slow, non existent, or in some cases, the extra ‘stress’ of a very low calorie diet can even lead to weight gain! Our biological systems work very closely with each other, so if the body feels chronically stressed, some of our hormones down regulate as a survival response causing all sorts of chaos. Things that we do to manage our weight can heighten this response. This includes severe calorie restriction and over exercising. For example, our hunger hormones Leptin and Grehlin can become unbalanced, meaning an increase in hunger and sugar cravings. This can lead to chaotic blood sugar levels and an increase in belly fat……..exactly the opposite of what you’re trying to achieve!! This is just one of the reasons diets don’t work in the long term. Furthermore, by developing ‘a sweet tooth’, sugar cravings, an afternoon slump of energy, inability to lose weight, or an increase in belly fat, we may

To advertise please call 01773 549 035

be increasing our risk of diabetes, and many other chronic diseases further down the line. So what do we do? •

Become a sugar detective. Check packet food for hidden sugars, especially cereals, low fat foods and ‘healthy’ snack bars. 4 grams of sugar equates to 1 teaspoon. You’ll be surprised what you find!!

Try to finish eating by 7.30pm, then ‘close the kitchen’. Not only will this lead to less snacking, but it also means you’re more likely to get a good night’s sleep. (This can really help hot flushes if you’re a lady in the menopause years).

Work on sleep hygiene. Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep per night. Sleep is when we recover on a deep cellular level from stress. What’s more, lack of sleep can lead to unhealthy food choices and sugar cravings the following day, creating a vicious circle of more weight gain and more stress.

Finally, we need to be kind to ourselves. We’ve been through a lot. Accept that the weight has gone on over the course of a year or even more, so its not going to disappear overnight. Small, consistent, sustainable lifestyle changes will get us to our goal, but it might just mean the summer wardrobe stays put for an extra month or to.

Sweet Dreams!

Vintage Rambles a with raFf lake and

This walk originally featured in the magazines back in August 2014. The walk is one of my favourites, which we do quite often. It makes great use of a number of different trails and has a great variety of scenery, not least the views from the ‘Miner’, which is the highest point in Nottinghamshire. The walk can be adapted, if you want to stick to the trails or if you want to shorten it. To shorten the route just jump from the end of point 5 to point 11, although you will miss out on the Miner!

6-mile circular from Brierly Forest Park A moderate and varied walk for you and your dog. The route should take around 3 hours. The route has a couple of decent inclines and there are stiles to cross. There are a few stretches of road so take care. The terrain is generally very good but as with all walks it depends on the conditions, so a good pair of boots are always advised.

START: Brierly Forest Park Visitor Centre, Skegby Road, Huthwaite, NG17 2PL. 1.

Begin in the car park. Facing the visitors centre exit the car park on the right, passing through a kissing gate and continue straight along the path. Continue to pass a picnic area and pond on your right.

2.

Continue straight ignoring all other paths for some distance. Eventually you come to a junction of several paths, bear left, signposted for ‘Silverhill Trial’.

5.

Continue along the trail passing a golf course on your left. Near the end of the golf course, you reach a cross roads of footpaths with a kissing gate on either side of the trail. Turn right, to enter a field. Continue across the field to the far side to enter the trees through a gap and continue across a wooden footbridge into another field. Cross the field diagonally right and at the far side cross a stile adjacent to a telegraph pole into another field. Keeping the hedge on your right continue straight ahead. Ignore the stile on your right and continue to the far side of the field. Bear left and continue with the hedge on your right until you see a stile on your right. Cross the stile and a bridge into another field. Take a slight diagonal left to cross the field, heading for a gap in the fence on the left-hand perimeter of this field. Pass through the gap and uphill onto the Silverhill Trail.

6.

Turn right, signposted for ‘Teversal’. Pass over a road bridge and then an old station platform on your right. Continue until reaching a signpost on your right. Bear right and then turn left following the signs for ‘The Miner’ and ‘Highest Point’.

7.

Keep straight ahead until you cross a road bridge, then bear left, following the signs for ‘The Miner’ and ‘Highest Point’.

8.

Continue along this trail, passing a pond on your right and onto a T-junction with a large ‘Silverhill Wood’ sign on your right. Turn right here and continue winding gently uphill along the trail for approx.1 mile. At a fork in the path, bear left uphill. Pass through a large wooden gate and shortly after turn right to climb some steps to ‘The Miner’.

9.

At the top of the steps bear left, keeping ‘The Miner’ monument on your right and continue downhill along a footpath to re-join the trail. Continue downhill, through a wooden chicane, a metal width restrictor and onto a road.

10.

Turn left along the road to a T-junction. Turn right along the main road and then after a short distance take the signposted footpath on your left. Pass by a metal gate and cross 2 stiles to go through a kissing gate and turn right onto the Silverhill Trail, signposted for Tibshelf.

11.

Continue straight to pass over a cross road of footpaths . Then after some distance cross over a bridge. 30 meters after the bridge turn right onto a grass path that U-turns down the bankside to pass through a metal gate. Turn right to pass under the bridge and through another metal gate into a field.

12.

Cross the field diagonally right and pass through another metal gate onto the Teversal Trail. Turn left, signposted ‘Brierly Forest Park’. Continue until reaching a crossroads of footpaths and turn right, passing through a metal gate and onto a footpath through a golf course.

13.

Continue uphill and at the top continue with a hedge on either side until reaching a some signposts before turning left along a footpath signposted ‘Frackley’

14.

Continue straight for some distance. Ignoring a path bearing left, carry on to pass ‘Hole No. 2’ on your left and then through a wooden gate. Immediately after a gate the path splits, bear left and continue straight until reaching a crossroads of footpaths with a signpost on your right. Follow the sign to return to Brierly Forest Visitors Centre

Alfreton Cricket Club

The excitement and buzz surrounding the start to the new season has been increasing more and more the closer April the 17th gets. At the time of writing, the season is just over a week away and preparation is well underway. Pre-season training finally got back underway as the Covid-19 restrictions began to lift on the 29th March and has seen large numbers attending to brush off the rustiness from the 7 months without any practice. In preparation the club has arranged a few friendlies in the run up to the beginning of the season. The 3rd of April saw the 1st team travel to Belper Meadows, where a narrow last over defeat for Alfreton occurred as Belper knocked off Alfreton’s 199 with one ball to spare. There are no new signings for the 1st team to report, only the returning Tom New and Elliott Bowles which was reported in last month’s article. The 1st team host local rivals Marehay CC on the 10th April down at the ASHA Oval in their final friendly before their opening fixture in Division 1 at home to Morton.

01

An interclub friendly between Hillyer’s Hornets and Spencer’s Scorpions occurred down at the ASHA Oval, where a mix of the 2nd team and 3rd team took place to gain some match sharpness. The 2nd team then hosted a T10 midweek friendly with South Wingfield CC, where the 2’s were narrowly defeated as Alfreton scored 92 to South Wingfield’s 96. There is no friendly arranged for the 10th of April for the 2’s despite the skipper contacted numerous clubs so their next game will be against Stainsby Hall for the opening game of the season. The 3rd team have one friendly to go before their Division 7N opener at Bakewell against Pilsley CC on Sunday the 11th April down at the Park. Callum Spencer has improved his batting options within the 2nd team with the signing of Joe Wilkinson from Selston CC. Joe has an average of over 53 with the bat from 271 games from his Selston and South Normanton days and is a great addition to both the squad and club. Hopefully by the next article, all three teams have made positive starts to their respective campaigns and are in strong positions. We hope to see many of you down at the ASHA Oval during the season and show your support to a club in your community. Once again the club are open for sponsorship opportunities for the upcoming season and if you are interested please contact the club through its social media pages!

The Other Lambretta Boys – pt2

Last month I told of our first experiences…..this is what happened next After 4 or 5 days we’d both got the hang of steering and braking. My mates SX200 had a very modern facility that mine sadly lacked. When he activated his “kick start” a noise was born behind the side panels, the machine started to vibrate a bit and puffs of smoke emerged from a little pipe at the back. Quite novel. I could have been kicking mine until now and nothing would have happened – nothing other than a sore leg. The previous owner, the aforementioned lunatic centre half, had modified my machine to improve it. What this improvement amounted to was a bloody great hole in the side panel to accommodate a carburettor apparently stolen from a Chieftan Tank. Now, “improvement” is a word open to huge levels of interpretation. In this case it seemed to mean that the vehicle would no longer start easily and once it had been coaxed into life the ”improvement” further meant that it would overheat after about 10 miles. Luckily it had a about 30 mirrors attached to each side of the headlight so the fact that it wouldn’t start, would stop soon after starting and threaten to set fire to my trousers after 10 miles were mere by-products of being “cool”. Also on the plus side was the fact that 10 miles would get me to Heage Road in Ripley to see my first real girlfriend

54

and when she foolishly dumped me it got me to Belper, just, to see the next lucky recipient of my affections. And….most importantly….it got me to The Regal. More about that in a later episode. So we had the machines, the Parkas, the attitude. All we were lacking was the style. Where better to get that than the wonderful emporium that was Steelyards!! Steelyards was a highly respected gents outfitters in Ripley, almost opposite The Regal and next door to the old Cooperative store. Heaven knows what they made of the young oiks coming in to buy “sta prest” and shirts with a weird pleat down the back made by Ben Sherman Steelyards didn’t last long after that, partly because I think I was one of the few people who actually paid for the stuff I bought. It was a common site to see slim young men of 10 stone walking in and coming out looking 12 stone and struggling under the weight of three pairs of trousers, 4 shirts and a mohair sweater! So we now had the style to match our self confidence. The world was about to open its doors….

Mike’us sings M

I’ve always thought that our area is a trend setter for all things culinary and now we have the proof (if by proof you mean a highly dubious story) Mike is always glad to hear from you at mike. musings@outlook.com

Even more of George’s Footballing Tales (as told to him whilst sitting on his grandad’s knee)

It may have been nearly seventy years since those intimate fireside chats with his grandad, but they remained fresh in George’s memory. He wasn’t sure if it was the way Horace told the tales or just the fact that many of the late Victorian characters he was hearing about bore absolutely no resemblance to the heroes of his own childhood like Stanley Matthews, Tom Finney and Nat Lofthouse. Whatever, Horace almost seemed able to bring them to life. Here’s another good example. With the Club doing well and drawing huge crowds to the Harena, there was a problem. Most of the players were colliers, with some not finishing their Saturday morning shift until 1.00pm. They’d then come to the stadium straight from the pit and be stripped naked and have buckets of water thrown over them to clear the accumulated muck & grime. A bit cleaner perhaps, but having not eaten anything since getting up for work at 4.30am, they needed sustenance to ensure they’d last a full ninety minutes. Now, as Horace recalled, Mildred Mycroft was the mother of one of the star players during the glory days of the 1890’s. She was not only a keen supporter but recognised as one of the best cooks in the area, and when she was approached and asked if she’d provide a few snacks ‘for t’lads’ she was only too pleased to help out. Soon she was not only feeding players who’d been working, but the rest of the team. Word spread

and within a couple of months, many Hilcote supporters were asking if she could just ‘do a bit more’ and they’d happily pay for what was on offer. Before the end of that season, she had been provided with facilities to not only prepare and cook whatever was required, but a hatch through which she could sell to hungry spectators, many of whom had also come straight from work. So it was that for many a Saturday afternoon, one of the attractions of a trip to the Harena was a visit to Mildred’s Mess. People, some of whom were not in the least interested in the football, would turn up to consume some of Mildred’s Mutton Stew, freshly made Lard Sandwiches, Fidgety Pies, Bakewell Puddings or Lumpytums. As George put it, and who am I to disagree, there is a good case to suggest that at Hilcote, Mildred Mycroft created the original pre-match meal and opened the first ever ‘concessionary stall’ at any sporting ground in the world. If proven, this could draw tourists from around the world to the village. PS – Mildred, weighing a little over 19 stones, was a good advert for the quality of her own cooking. As the captain of visiting Marehay Marauders was once heard to remark upon arrival at the Harena, “Flipping Heck*, I hope she’s not playing centre half this afternoon”. * - it was actually worse than that, but kids might be reading!

May flowers in the Peak 2021 Late spring into early summer sees our woodland flowers come to a spectacular peak. Swarms of bluebells have taken over from the wood anemones and will Wild Garlic merge with clouds of pungent wild garlic flowers and greater stitchwort too. With woods still full of dappled sunlight before the midsummer closure of the canopy throws everything into shade, the flowers dominate the senses in terms of both colour and fragrance. The sounds of spring birds in a rich chorus provide a backdrop to a seasonal feast of nature’s extravaganza. At this time of year the woods are busy places with birds supporting broods of youngsters and mammals like badgers and foxes with youngsters too. For the flowers this is the time, indeed a short window of opportunity, to attract vital pollinating insects and thus to set seed. The clouds of bluebells for example, are attended by bumblebees, honey bees, and hoverflies in abundance. Within a few months the woods will be dark, the ground floor dry, and the spring flowers merely a distant memory until the next year. However, there is a rather secret life active in the old woods. As the trees like oak and birch burst into life they are followed by a host of hungry insects, the larvae of myriad moths that feed on oak especially. Indeed, the oak is famed for supporting hundreds of other species, mostly insects which either live in it or feed on it. It is these insect larvae i.e. caterpillars Anemone that parent birds gather to feed to their growing offspring. The birds depend on the insect larvae and the insects depend on the great oak trees; and thus the circle of life goes around. Birds like blue tits and great tits have their annual breeding patterns carefully synchronised to match the available caterpillars. To make matters even more complicated, the oak’s leaves contain toxic chemicals called ‘tannins’ to help protect them against insect predation i.e. caterpillars, and

these are timed to reach their highest levels when caterpillars are most abundant. Of course with climate change many of these interconnected cycles are getting out of sync and that can cause problems. The so-called ‘ancient woodlands’ are the richest in terms of their rare and unique biodiversity, and their tree canopies dominated by oaks and sometimes Woodland Flowers by planted beech trees, are host to diverse insect faunas. However, at the present time and for a variety of reasons these insects are under pressure and many populations across the whole of Europe have plummeted. If this continues then it may mean problems for the woodland birds which need insects as food for their young, and also for the woodland flowers which need to be pollinated. It appears that the ‘usual suspects’ for causing these problems are habitat loss and habitat change, and climatic shifts, plus various pesticide chemicals used in modern farming. Steps are now being taken to limit or remove the worst of these but only time will tell if nature can bounce back. In the meantime, take a walk in the local woods and enjoy!

GARDENS

Gardener’s Calendar The temptation to plant your tender bedding out now is great, but really it should be left till the end of the month when the chance of frost has passed. But you can get the plants used to the great outdoors by putting them outside during the day for about a week before plonking them into their permanent garden spot. Make sure the compost or soil is moist when planting. If you have plants in the greenhouse waiting to go out, make sure they have enough ventilation and space to avoid damping off – basically the collapse of the plant – or mildew. Increase humidity in the greenhouse on hot days with a water spray which will stop spider mites attacking.

r

Fruit trees planted this year need to have their blooms removed, harsh as it may seem, to make sure they establish well and give more fruit in future years. Keep on top of the weeding. We know weeds are just plants growing where you don’t want them, but they can often be thugs and will certainly be taking moisture and nutrients from your carefully nurtured seedlings.

Top Tip

Forget me nots are beautiful cheerful little spring plants, but they self-seed like mad – fine if you want them everywhere next spring. If not, pull them out, or just leave one of two in strategic spots.

Top nature tip: If trimming hedges or trees, make sure there are no nesting birds in the branches. It is actually illegal, as well as being awful for the birds.
