From the Editor Hello Readers, We’ve made it to summer (allegedly – the weather begs to differ!) and everywhere is tentatively starting to re-open. We had a lovely meal in an al fresco igloo with 2 friends to celebrate a birthday that happened 2 months ago! For us, 1 vaccine down, it’s nice to be out and about again and of course, to be able to see friends and family at long last. We’ve got Christmas dinner with the outlaws next month – it’s the roaring 20’s – anything goes!!! Speaking of things being open – have we got a comp for you guys!! As you are all aware, the Y Not Festival IS running this year -yayyyy! We’re so excited as the Voice team are on tour BUT we also managed to get a family ticket to give away to our lovely readers. The line-up is amazing and something really positive to look forward too after the last couple of years. SOOOO…. to be in with a chance of winning - all you need to do is answer the following question and email, it back to us. Which county is the Y Not festival held in? Email us at info@voicemagazines.co.uk before 5pm on 18th June 2021, with the answer, your name & contact telephone number (if we don’t have both of these, you won’t be included in the draw). *T&C’s apply.

What, you more?!?

want

Well turn to page 18 for an aMAZEing competition to win a family ticket to the outdoor cinema at Notts Maze. Following on from the re-opening of life as we know it – we suspect that events and community groups will be re-opening again soon too and we’ve already had contact from The Men’s Shed and Alfreton Ramblers Club, so now we just need you! If you previously featured in our mag or you would like to in future and you run a community or not-for-profit group or event, please get in touch, we’d love to hear from you. Happy catching up with friends and family, but remember, the dreaded ‘C’ word hasn’t gone away, so stay safe! See you next month,

Emily x P.S. Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine

World Music Day! “Music was my first love”, so sang John Miles in 1976…but what does music mean to you? 21st June is World Music Day - it’s also the day that the UK is due to be fully liberated from the restrictions imposed by COVID (fingers crossed of course!) as well as being the Summer Solstice. Will you be listening to a few tunes to celebrate, or is music not high on your list of likes? Music has always been an integral part of being human. Musical instruments have been around for thousands of years, the earliest known being flutes, made out of mammoth bone, and dating back an incredible 43,000 years! Even before that impressively early period in prehistory, it isn’t a stretch to imagine our early ancestors using the power of their voices to create music. Not all of us are blessed with amazingly tuneful voices, yet most of us are able to recognise and enjoy that skill in others. I like to think of my ancestor, umpteen generations removed, sitting around the fire humming along and tapping her feet as someone else sings a song (I do have a vivid imagination though…curse of the writer!). Music certainly has some sort of power over us, hearing a song from ‘back in the day’, can instantly transport you in time. And have you ever noticed that you can remember the lyrics of a song from years ago and yet struggle to remember where you put the car keys? I know I have! This connection between music and memory is why it is often used to help people living with dementia, and in care homes in general. For a truly heart warming example of how music memory

4

remains long after other memories have faded, type ‘dementia ballet dancer’ into Google and prepare to be amazed (have a tissue handy!). Staying with memory, well the mind anyway - one of the best ways to ensure your brain remains in tip top condition for as long as possible is to learn to play an instrument. You may never be a virtuoso, but the very act of learning to play helps to form new neural paths in your brain (it’s called neuroplasticity) it’s like exercise for your grey matter. If you want to see if there are any World Music Day events near you, I recommend you checking out www. makemusicday.co.uk/events. You can create and add your own events to that site too - so if there isn’t anything local to you, why not think about organising a get together? It needn’t be big, expensive, and flashy - it could just be a concert on your local village green or in the pub carpark. It would be a great way to get your neighbours and friends together after what has been a horrible year or so. So, returning to the opening sentence of this article…what does music mean to you? Visit our Facebook page and let us know! These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved to the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. To find out more visit www.landgassociates. co.uk or contact Laura on 07736 351341

Volunteer noun [c]

A person who does something, especially helping other people, willingly and without being forced or paid to do it Volunteering must be a choice freely made by each individual. We define volunteering as any activity that involves spending time, unpaid, doing something that aims to benefit the environment or someone. People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. For some it offers the chance to give something back to the community or make a difference to the people around them. For others it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge. Giving to others can also help protect your mental and physical health. It can reduce stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, and provide a sense of purpose. While it’s true that the more you volunteer, the more benefits you’ll experience, volunteering doesn’t have to involve a long-term commitment or take a huge amount of time out of your busy day. Giving in even simple ways can help those in need and improve your health and happiness. Our voluntary staff are an integral part of the hospice team. We are very proud of them and thank them for their wonderful commitment. They are regularly referred to in letters of thanks from families and friends of the hospice patients, who remember them for their care and concern.

Approximately 250 voluntary staff work in several different areas in the hospice, providing an essential service. We also have teams at our two charity shops in Mansfield and Sutton. If you would like to join us, please email: contact@johneastwoodhospice.org.uk for an application form.

Beer Goggles Did you know that June 15th is National Beer Day? I can’t say as I did until I saw it written down somewhere, but it did lead me to think about beer - or more accurately the history of beer, before someone accuses me of being an alcofrolic with beer goggles on! A little spot of ‘Googling’ (minus the beer goggles of course) and I managed to establish that beer is in fact a very, very, very old beverage indeed. In fact the earliest archaeological evidence of a beer produced by fermentation is a 13,000-year-old residue found in a cave near Haifa in Israel. As a drink it may not have tickled our modern taste buds, being of a ‘gruel’ like consistency apparently, but it just goes to show that where man goes, beer seems to inevitably follow! Since beer is essentially a by-product of fermenting grain, it may well have been discovered accidentally in many different places throughout the world when humans began to live a more settled agriculturally based existence and grains featured more heavily in the daily diet. One of the earliest written down recipes for beer comes from a 3,900-year-old Sumerian poem about Ninkasi, their patron goddess of brewing. It described beer being made from the barley left from the production of bread. ‘Small beer’, a very low alcohol brew would have been the drink of choice throughout Europe and the UK in the middle ages. In a climate not suitable for growing grapes to turn into wine, beer was a readily available alternative, and workers involved in heavy labour were known to drink up to 10 pints a day. By the 15th century the addition of hops to a brew reached the UK; an unhopped beer would have been known as an ale, while the use of hops would make it a beer.

To advertise please call 01773 549 035

The Industrial Revolution saw the beginning of the mass production of beers which ultimately led to the large scale breweries of the late 19th and 20th centuries. Commercialisation and mechanisation led to a reduction in locally produced brews, replacing them with standard, often chemically laden concoctions. To the relief of many a beer aficionado, this trend of mass production has been reversed somewhat in the past 20 or so years, with the emergence of many craft beer breweries - small scale, local, and each creating their own unique beers. Derbyshire is blessed with many of these producers including Howard Town, Glossop; Thornbridge and Peak Ales both near Bakewell; Eyam Brewery; Buxton Brewery; Intrepid in the Hope Valley; Wolds Farm and Moot Ales, near Matlock…even the most beer phobic amongst us should be able to find something to our tastes. (Personally, I favour Howard Town’s ‘Hope’ - but I am biased because the head brewer is a friend!). Next time you raise a pint, give pause to think of the generations before you who have done the same over the last several thousand years. These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved to the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. Vintage Rambles a with raFf lake and

We first featured this walk in Christmas 2014! So, we thought it was time to revisit and we were really glad we did. It’s a great walk, making use of the Rowthorne Trail, Teversal Trail and Pleasley Pit Country Park before heading off to explore the countryside around Glapwell. The doggies loved it as they were able to explore off lead on the trails and if you are looking for a stop off point the café at Pleasley Pit is due to reopen by the time this magazine arrives with you.

6-mile circular walk near Rowthorne Village A moderate walk for you and your dog. The route should take around 2½ hours. Whilst a large part of the walk is trails and paths there are some fields to cross with uneven and potentially muddy sections so a good pair of boots or wellies is a must, especially at this time of year. There are a few sections of road, so please take care and keep dogs on leads at these times.

START: Rowthorne Trail Car Park, Rowthorne Lane, Rowthorne, S44 5QQ 1.

Exit the car park at the far end onto a path which bends round to the left. At a T-junction of paths turn left onto the Rowthorne Trail.

2.

Continue along the trail for some distance, cross over a crossroads of footpaths. And keep straight for a long distance until eventually reaching a large ‘Rowthorne Trail’ sign on your left. At this point bear right to pass through a gap adjacent to a metal gate. After a very short distance, bear right again and pass through a gap onto the Teversal Trail.

3.

Turn left along the Teversal Trail and continue straight until reaching a wooden gate. Pass through the gate, cross a trail and then pass through a width restrictor to a T-junction of trails. Turn right and continue along this trail to pass through two more width restrictors.

4.

Continue straight and pass by a car park on the right and a chimney stack on the left. Continue until the trail bends sharp left and back on itself. On the bend turn right and then immediately left and head towards a large wooden gate and signs.

5.

Pass through the gate adjacent to the wooden gate and bear left to continue on a well laid path uphill. At the top follow the trail as it bends sharp right. Pass through a metal gate next to a large wooden gate. Bear left to continue along the trail for some distance keeping a large lake on your right-hand side.

6.

On the other side of the lake, at a crossroads in the paths, turn left to pass through a metal gate. Bear left to continue along the footpath. Pass a lone gate before bearing right and pass through a metal gate. Shortly after a wooden bench on your right, turn left along a footpath heading downhill

7.

With a hedgerow on your right. At the bottom turn right at the cross roads onto a bridleway. Continue along the bridleway to meet a main road. Cross diagonally left and continue along country road signposted for ‘Stoney Houghton’. At a sharp right-hand bend in the road continue straight ahead along a signposted bridleway.

8.

Continue straight, keeping a careful watch for a cross road of footpaths, with a marker post on your right. Turn left here, through a gap in the hedge and continue straight to cross an open field. Upon reaching a hedgerow, walk straight ahead, keeping the hedge close on your right. At the end of the field pass through a gap onto a tarmac road.

9.

10.

take a signposted footpath on your right. Follow this right then left and into an open field. 11.

Walk sharp diagonally left across the field to pass through a gap in the hedge. Then cross another field and eventually through a gap onto a country road.

12.

Turn right along the road and after a short distance turn left along another road. Eventually the road bears sharp left and continues until reaching the car park on the right.

This walk is for illustrative purposes only. Voice Magazines takes no Turn left on the road an continue for a short distance responsibility for anyone before turning right onto a residential street. At a who chooses to follow T-junction turn right and follow the road around to the this route and encourages left. Where the road bends right, continue straight to all walkers to obey all enter ‘Back Lane’. byelaws and signs and to Follow ‘Back Lane’ to the end. At the T-junction turn respect the area they are right along a main road for a very short distance walking in, ensuring they before crossing the road to climb some steps. Turn left pick up all dog mess and at the top and then sharp right along a path. Continue onto a residential street and then after some distance obey the countryside code at all times.

Bess and the Queen of Scots We touched briefly on Bess of Hardwick’s connection to the ill fated Mary Queen of Scots in previous articles, but the relationship is worthy of a piece of its own. Bess and Mary first became acquainted in 1569 when Queen Elizabeth I appointed Bess’s husband the Earl of Shrewsbury ‘keeper’ of the Scottish Queen. Mary had fled Scotland after she had been forced to abdicate the Scottish throne in favour of her infant son James. ‘Keeper’ was in fact a bit of a misnomer, jailer, would have been a more accurate word. Elizabeth deeply mistrusted her cousin Mary who had claimed title to the English throne in the past and was great-niece of King Henry VIII. Mary was also a devout Catholic and Elizabeth (with good reason) feared a Catholic uprising in England should Mary be allowed her freedom. Mary’s first incarceration was at Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire, for the next fifteen years she moved between the properties owned by Bess and her husband, namely, Tutbury, Sheffield Castle, Sheffield Manor Lodge, Wingfield Manor, and Chatsworth House. Reports say that 30 carts were needed to transport her belongings between the residences, and she had her own retinue of staff numbering at least 16. Hardly an uncomfortable imprisonment! Queen Elizabeth was obviously an astute business woman, as well as a canny politician, because in passing the custodianship of her cousin to the Shrewsbury’s, she also gave them the expense of looking after her AND the responsibility for her well being and behaviour. A case of ‘not on my watch’ should anything befall Mary, or she be implicated in any wrong doings. Although Bess was some 15 years older that the former Queen of Scots they do appear to have been on friendly terms – at least initially. They shared a love of embroidery and between them designed and worked on many pieces. The culmination of the work were two extraordinary wall hangings which still exist today, panels can

28

be seen to bear the initials of both Mary and Bess. The relationship between the two women crumbled as Mary was angry at Bess’s dynastic ambitions for her granddaughter Arabella, which could have damaged the chances of Mary’s son James ultimately ascending to the English throne. Mary even went as far as to destroy Bess’s already strained and tenuous accord with Queen Elizabeth by writing (to Elizabeth) that Bess had said “that had I been her own queen she could not have done more for me”. And that Bess had also claimed Elizabeth’s famed virginity was a lie. The Shrewsbury’s responsibilities for imprisoning Mary quite possibly affected the couple’s marriage, causing their ultimate final estrangement. The early indications were that the marriage was a love match but the financial strain of looking after Mary, and the absence from court circles this entailed for the Earl, is thought to have driven a wedge between them. Bess, as we know, outlived her husband and both Queens…the ultimate survivor, even in the face of royal plots and intrigues!

Back to my roots! Getting older and beginning to lose people within the family, notably my parents, was the trigger for me to start looking back to the past. Like many people I have an urge to ‘know where I come from’ and so, armed with some research started by my dad, I reactivated a subscription to a well known online genealogy website. I decided to focus initially on the paternal line, partly because my father had just died and partly because I had a solid starting point thanks to the research he’d started. Family lore – i.e. what my dad thought – said that one side of his family originated somewhere on the Lincolnshire coast, and another in the Midlands. His work backed this up, but he hadn’t managed to get any further than the mid 19th century with the line bearing his surname…the Midlands link, specifically a place called Kings Winford. And neither did I! I did however manage to go way, way back following the Lincolnshire side. The earliest records being 1660 in a place called North Willingham, and 1670 in Farforth. Neither are coastal although ‘trawlerman’ is recorded later in the records with a home listed in Cleethorpes. My attention then switched to my dad’s maternal line and this is when it started to get fascinating (to me at least). I was born and grew up in Sheffield and our family days out were often in and around the Peak District. As an adult I lived (still in Sheffield) just on the edge of the National Park, getting closer and closer to Derbyshire until the pull of the area became too strong and I eventually moved here in 2015. Tracing back down dad’s maternal line quickly led to ancestors in the very area I now call home…well near enough…on BOTH sides of his maternal line! Date wise I

34

have 1623 in Castleton; 1626 in Hope; 1625 in Hope and 1670 in Castleton, as the earliest records. Rooted in the landscape you could say. The very earliest date I’ve found is my 12 times great grandfather in Coley, near Wakefield, in 1502! I think dad would be pleased to see some of his ancestry began in ‘Gods own county’ , dyed in the wool Yorkshireman that he was! My maternal family line is much harder to trace back in time as my mother’s grandparents were Russian Jewish immigrants, arriving in the UK in the 1890s and ending up in Sheffield, without access to records from the Ukraine and Belarus, I’m stuck. My maternal grandmother’s line should be easier, but I’ve reached dead ends in the 18th century, more delving to do I think because I’m told one branch of that side goes back to 15th century France! I plan to continue this research, but it does become VERY addictive and before I know it, I’ll have spent several hours pursuing a trail through the records, when I should actually have been working. GARDENS

Gardener’s Calendar Despite our chilly spring most gardens are bursting with life. You can start to think about pruning early flowering shrubs such as forsythia, currant and mock orange to ensure you get a good show of flowers next year. Leave it later and the flowers are less likely. Take out diseased stems to ground level and cut back generally to a lower strongly growing stem. Cut back a quarter of older stems to the base. Nasturtiums and night scented stock are among the seeds you can still be planting now, along with other “companion” plants which will help keep pests away. These usually have a strong scent, which confuse the insects which will damage your prize plants, whether fruit and veg or the likes of roses. So you can use nasturtiums alongside beans, lavender for carrots, calendula and mint for tomatoes, although watch out that the mint doesn’t take over your plot. Artemesia attracts things like ladybirds which see off aphids.

r

If you’ve left your lawn to grow long in May to encourage wildflowers but now want to cut it, do it in stages. If weeds you didn’t have also popped up, remember that weedkiller will kill the wildflowers too!

Top Tip If you’re looking to attract pollinators such as bees as hoverflies to your garden, try the likes of sage and borage, heliotrope cosmos, and salvias.

The Splendour of the Red Tree from Turkey

All across the Peak District there is most stunning and splendid wild sight emerging as the ‘wild rhododendron’ bursts into bloom. This is the bane of conservationists but much-loved by the public (and a lot of wildlife too). Many people don’t realise this is an ‘alien’, exotic, or non-native plant, and those who do, think it comes from the Himalayas. This spectacular shrub is Rhododendron ponticum or literally ‘The Red Tree from Turkey’; so yes, there is a clue there. Most rhododendrons do come from the Himalayas from the Sikkim and Bhutan across into China; with a few in North America, a small number in Europe, and a lot in tropical forests. However, our ‘wild’ shrub is from Europe and around the Mediterranean.

Landowners loved it for shelter, ornament, and especially game cover for shoots. Many planted it as wildlife cover and its stunning flowers, and it was extensively used as root-stock for less hardy prize rhododendrons brought to Britain by the Empire’s plant hunters. Collectors travelled the globe in search of the exotic, and it burst onto and across the Peak’s countryside for 200 years spreading unnoticed and uncontrolled. This is one of the most successful of our invasive alien plants and talk of attempted total eradication is pie-inthe-sky. There’s been ‘talk’ of effective control for sixty years or more by forestry experts, and rhododendron can be dealt with on individual sites. However, there is no effective strategy or policy to stop the further spread across the landscape. Personally I cannot see government spending the huge amount of cash that would be needed and also I don’t imagine everybody would be agreeable or co-operative. Many of the seed-plants are in small, private gardens and I just don’t think people will take to them being ‘eradicated’. This plant can cause a head-ache for site managers but gardeners and many of the resident and visiting public love it.

This flowering event becomes a natural spectacular which in places like the Peak District and Snowdonia in particular, presents with stunning vistas and views. This is an annual happening for which people travel miles to see and has become a tourism attraction. Covering woods, heaths, moorland edge, and old parklands with a blanket of red and purple to mauve flowers, the impact is dramatic. Outside this peak of flowering the shrub is far less obvious and is often unnoticed. Invading natural habitats it clearly impacts on native wildlife but not always negatively. However, there is a twist in this story for a plant often demonised as an alien invader. It was native in Britain between the recent glacial periods but somehow never returned when icy chills mellowed around 15,000 years ago. It was effectively banished to the far flung tips of Europe and Near Asia (Turkey, Lebanon, Portugal, and Spain), until 1763 when plant collectors brought seeds back to London’s Kew Gardens. From there as they say, the rest is history. Professor Ian D. Rotherham of Sheffield Hallam University is a researcher, writer and broadcaster on wildlife and environmental issues in the Peak District and elsewhere.
