Volunteer

noun [c] A person who does something, especially helping other people, willingly and without being forced or paid to do it

Volunteering must be a choice freely made by each individual.

We define volunteering as any activity that involves spending time, unpaid, doing something that aims to benefit the environment or someone.

People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. For some it offers the chance to give something back to the community or make a difference to the people around them. For others it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge. Giving to others can also help protect your mental and physical health. It can reduce stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, and provide a sense of purpose. While it’s true that the more you volunteer, the more benefits you’ll experience, volunteering doesn’t have to involve a long-term commitment or take a huge amount of time out of your busy day. Giving in even simple ways can help those in need and improve your health and happiness.

Our voluntary staff are an integral part of the hospice team. We are very proud of them and thank them for their wonderful commitment. They are regularly referred to in letters of thanks from families and friends of the hospice patients, who remember them for their care and concern.

Approximately 250 voluntary staff work in several different areas in the hospice, providing an essential service. We also have teams at our two charity shops in Mansfield and Sutton. If you would like to join us, please email: contact@johneastwoodhospice.org.uk for an application form.

Whit Walk - Part One

Looking back over the years, one of the traditions was the whit walk. Prior to the walk, there would have been meetings with a representative from each church to check what was needed, and that everything would be in place for the routes which were being walked.

1. Which brass bands were going to be involved?

2. Which hymns would they sing? 3. Which tunes would they use? 4. What about police who had to organise the traffic and close the roads?

5. Who would organise collecting tins? 6. How many service sheets did they need? Just some of the many questions which needed to be answered.

There were usually about 15 hymns needed for the day, such as When a knight won his spurs, Blessed Assurance, Praise to the Lord, and Stand up, Stand up for Jesus which were all favourites. They always included special hymns which the children would know. Brass Bands were usually the colliery bands, Huthwaite prize band, Teversal colliery band, Shirebrook Colliery Band, Clipstone Colliery Band, and The Salvation Army Band were amongst those used. Most children would have new clothes, often shoes as well. It was an expensive time, and often the one time of the year when a child would have a new outfit. For parents who couldn’t pay, they had them “on the slate” paying off an amount each week. The children, excited at these new outfits would dress up and go visiting relatives or neighbours to show their outfits, in the hope that they would get a penny or two for going.
