Where the teaching doesn't stop.

Hi Readers, I hope you are enjoyed your great British Summer – it was hot and short lived like all the greats but fear not, I’m banking on a cracking September once all the school holidays, Euro’s etc are finished! You never know, we might have our long awaited ‘Freedom Day’ by that point! Talking of ‘Freedom Day’, at this stage we still don’t know what’s happening with events at the time of writing & going to print. We aren’t sure if our beloved YNot festival is going ahead, my heart goes out to them and the rest of the hospitality and events industry as they find themselves in yet another state of limbo. As a large proportion of society have discovered, it’s very difficult to survive financially when you can’t trade/go to work/have minimal income and the stress for the owners/organisers must be phenomenal. We have our fingers and toes crossed for everyone involved that the test events go well and that the rest of the events community including YNot get the go ahead at the beginning of July. With this in mind, we’re now planning to bring our community events and diaries back in August or September editions, depending on what happens in the next few weeks and how much time we’ll have to put it together prior to print. If you featured in any of these sections previously please don’t assume that you will be included going forward, we will be starting from scratch! We’ll try and call some of the people from the previous listings but if you are a community group/not-for-profit organisation and you are planning events for

later this year and/ or you have regular meetings, send us an email to: info@ voicemagazines. co.uk and one of the team will get back to you. These listings are free, they will only be a minimal listing and only accessible to community or not-for profit groups. However, if these groups would like something a little larger, we’ve put together and trialled in our Bakewell magazine, a community noticeboard. You can choose the size you require and prices start from £6+vat per square but you can buy multiple squares. Why not pop over to our issuu site or Facebook page if you don’t receive that edition, to have a look for yourself. In the meantime, enjoy our July editions with huge thanks for all our distributors, contributors and advertisers and of course, yourselves for making these magazines possible.

Happy Reading,

Emily x

Care home beer festival serves residents a r-ale-y good time

Hoppy care home residents in Bakewell enjoyed a ‘lager’ than life party with a pop-up beer fesval to mark Naonal Beer Day. A makeshi pub with a bar built by the home’s maintenance man, signage and vintage posters, beer mats and branded glasses was put together at Burton Closes Hall Care Home, on Haddon Road. The nearby Thornbridge Brewery sponsored the event by sending a selecon of their most popular ales for residents to enjoy. And a tradional virtual pub quiz kept everyone entertained as they enjoyed their favourite pples and bar snacks. The quiz was won by resident Les Boulsover who aced the quiz, only dropping a couple of quesons. Everyone had such a giggle with some of the answers given and there was great team spirit, lots of laughter and camaraderie. Les said, “It was a smashing night. Loved it and the great quiz. Acvies coordinator Jade Tschornookyj-Mee, who channelled her inner Bee Lynch said, “We transformed the Dining Room into a pop-up pub, Thornbridge Brewery, who are just down the road from us, provided plenty of ale, beer mats and beauful glasses. Resident Maureen, was my fabulous assistant for the evening and did a marvellous job.” For more informaon call us on 01629 814076 or email burtonmanager@hillcare.net.

Book Review

Most people will have a time in their youth when they think back and say “we were mad then, do you remember?” Nights out partying, then going straight to work next morning; or climbing mountains in blizzards, or crazy evenings in pubs or at rock concerts or festivals when everybody seems like your best friend or spending your pay packet on a mad shopping spree. Just fill in your own best moments. And remember the friends you did it with. Andrew O’Hagan’s Mayflies starts as a celebration of mad youth. His mayflies, Jimmy and Tully are lads from small-town Scotland who break free and head for a weekend of magical escape in Manchester in the 1980s. Yes it was possible! Jimmy, the narrator, has a lovely turn of phrase. The story is full of wit and energy and carries you along at breakneck speed. Thirty years pass and the two meet up again. The story turns into a different tale, but the author treats middle age with the same thoughtfulness and compassion as he does the craziness of youth. It’s a lovely, wise and emotional book about going at your life with all you’ve got and doing it with the people you love. Wonderful!

Care Packages can be facilitated.

A Will is not enough: Why you should make your LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY now… Hopefully we all know the importance of making a suitable Will… it shows you care enough about what happens to your assets once you’ve died. But… shouldn’t you care just as much about keeping your assets and yourself safe while you are alive? If you are unable to manage your own affairs… a Will is not enough. The legal documents you need in place are called “Lasting Powers of Attorney”. They allow the people YOU choose now rather than someone appointed by the Court of Protection to deal with decisions in two key areas: your Property/Financial affairs and your Health/Welfare matters. There may come a time in your life when you are unable to manage your financial affairs or personal welfare, owing to some form of incapacity and you will need someone to act on your behalf. Even when we are young, we can find ourselves incapacitated owing to illness or injury and it can be invaluable having a trusted, reliable person who is able to manage your personal affairs and remove the anxiety of having unpaid bills, at a time when you most need peace of mind. Similarly, as we get older, the need for attorneys increases as we are more prone to illness and injuries. Sadly, sometimes people fall into the trap of thinking “I’ll get something sorted when I start feeling a bit iffy”… but an unexpected stroke, accident or illness can take anyone by surprise, regardless of their age or health.

Only by creating Lasting Powers of Attorney now ensures that if the worst were to happen, you can rest assured that both your financial affairs and personal welfare are in safe hands. It’s vital to understand that you cannot make a Lasting Power of Attorney once you’ve lost capacity – by then its too late and your family will face a lengthy and expensive court process to be able to deal with your affairs. •

Loss of mobility or illness can make it difficult to manage your affairs.

The prospect of unpaid bills can cause unnecessary stress and anxiety and delay someone’s recovery.

Even the young can encounter problems due to accident or illness.

Minor children could be taken into Care whilst Guardians are appointed.

An elderly relative losing capacity is difficult enough for loved ones to deal with, without the added worry that finances are becoming muddled.

This is information was provided by Haworth WardDrummond, owner of Egg & Nest Ltd. , a provider of professional estate planning services in accordance with the STEP Code of Conduct.

It’s not too late to make a Will...

Hello, I’m Haworth Ward-Drummond, your local Estate Planning Consultant of 13 years experience. I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. Along with my colleague Jane Bowland we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

Making a basic Will Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney

Using Trusts to protect their assets Pre-paid Funeral Plans

Protecting your home for future generations We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.

A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the highest standards of conduct at all times.

All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

“Haworth helped us make Wills to protect our home and set up Lasting Powers of Attorney. He explained everything very clearly and we now feel so much better knowing everything is in place.” Mr. & Mrs. Knapp, Bamford.

Slimming World Recipe Peri-Peri Chicken & Chips It’s BBQ season! Being on plan doesn’t mean missing out with this fabulous recipe. Why not replace the Peri Peri sauce with another brand or flavour for a different taste? Serves: 4 Ready in: 1 hour Syns per serving: ½ Method: 1. Preheat your oven to 190°C/fan 170°C/gas 5 and line a large baking tray with baking paper. Mix together the peri-peri sauce, tomato purée, lemon juice and garlic and season lightly. Rub all over the chicken legs, place on the prepared tray and roast for 10 minutes. 2. Remove the tray from the oven and carefully spread the chips out around the chicken. Season lightly, spray with low-calorie cooking spray and cook for a further 40 minutes, flipping the chips and spraying them with more low-calorie cooking spray halfway. 3. Meanwhile, mix together all the slaw ingredients. Divide the chicken, chips and slaw between 4 plates to serve.

Ingredients: For the chicken & chips: • 2 level tbsp Nando’s Medium Peri-Peri Sauce (or similar) • 1 tbsp tomato purée • 2 tbsp lemon juice • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 4 chicken legs, skin removed • 1kg potatoes, cut into thin chips • Low-calorie cooking spray

For the slaw: • 2 red peppers, deseeded and thinly sliced • ½ red onion, thinly sliced • ¼ white cabbage, shredded • 4 tbsp fat-free natural yogurt • Juice of 3 limes

Just over 12 months ago at the start of Lockdown Bakewell Town FC merged the senior and junior clubs together. The senior part of the club was struggling to field two sides and the junior club had no committee, 6 teams, only 3 managers and only two girls in the club their only choice was to play in the U12 Boys team! Turn the clock on 12 months and the senior Men’s teams have 50 available players, four to six key teenagers in the first team, a development team full of teenagers. The club now has 25 teams including 32 under 14 girls and twenty women who will make up a senior team, an Under 14 and Under 12 team that will be competing in the Derby league from September. The club has an established veterans and walking football team. It has grown from 90 players to over 250 in just 12 months. The committee members of both sections of the club have done an excellent job at building strong structures and systems. The club has a vision to be competitive at all senior levels by attracting and developing young players and making football available to everyone no matter what their ability - there are no barriers to playing football at Bakewell Town FC. The club wants to lead the way in being inclusive and diverse.

Bakewell Town in the Community has been running in 5 local schools running all girls, all boys and mixed after school clubs. We have another 7 schools in the pipeline and this summer the club will be running it’s first football camp during the week of August 16th. If anyone would like to know more about how to get their children involved, or if you would like to know more about becoming a coach, volunteer or sponsor please contact Dave Cottrell on 07808 786 000. Football is merely the vehicle for the club to enable men, women, boys and girls to improve their physical and mental wellbeing. However, with the demand comes a major challenge. The club needs to find a new home and is desperate to attract the attention of local land owners and politicians who can help fulfill the ambitions of this club (which does so much for the community) to find a new home. As Bakewell grows and young families bring more children - we need to keep our young people active, healthy, off the streets and x-boxes. If you can help please make contact - even if only for a cappuccino and a discussion about what our community needs!

Time for a Picnic July is ‘National Picnic Month’, and we are blessed in this part of the world to have lots of amazing places to spread our blankets and unpack our sandwiches. But let’s inject a few words of caution, and a couple of reminders… We do have the ‘right to roam’ in this country, meaning you can access the countryside without sticking to paths, but there are still rules to adhere to. Starting with the basics; firstly not all of the UK is classed as ‘open access land’ - areas marked on a map as ‘private (‘excepted land’)’ are restricted. You may be able to pass through but must use publicly marked footpaths. And even in ‘open access’ areas you should not horse ride, cycle, or drive a car or motorbike. You should not ‘wild camp’ either, without the permission of the land owner. Another obvious rule (or at least it SHOULD be obvious!) is to keep dogs on leads whilst you are near ANY livestock - it doesn’t matter how ‘good’ your beloved pooch is, a dog is a hunter by nature, and you have no idea if/when your pet may decide to follow his instincts. You should also keep your dog on a leash if you are visiting the countryside during the period between 1 March and 31 July to protect ground-nesting birds. Other common sense things to remember are to shut gates after you pass through them; be alert around livestock, particularly if they are with their young; and it shouldn’t need to be said but ‘TAKE YOUR RUBBISH HOME WITH YOU’! All the above being said, who remembers the picnics of childhood? The plaid rugs, Tupperware boxes of wilting salad that no one ate, sarnies

26

made of limp white sliced bread filled with potted meat (or sliced ham if you ‘were a bit posh’), lukewarm fizzy drinks and thermos flasks of stewed tea! If you were lucky there’d be something sweet to finish off the feast - a slice of home made cake, a bun, or perhaps a melting chocolate bar. What we never did was take a foil container full of charcoal, light it, burn a few burgers or sausages and then leave the smoking hot tray of coals behind to ignite woodland and moors alike. That my friends is a very 2020s phenomena, and one that needs to be stopped immediately IMHO. And breathe… Enjoy National Picnic Month sensibly, dig out the rugs, the picnic baskets, cool bags, Tupperware, and thermos flasks; invent new sandwich flavours - potted meat (whilst delicious) is so last century. Go a bit upmarket, buy a ‘posh’ loaf of bread, cut off the top, hollow it out and stuff the middle with all manner of loveliness before putting the top back on and wrapping the whole lot tightly in clingfilm. Put it in the fridge for a couple of hours with something heavy on top to press it down, then slice and enjoy al fresco… yum! You Want Jam Too?! When I was a kid, my dad used to say, ‘you want jam on it you do!’ meaning (I think) that I expected more than I was being given. So for example I’d be offered one thing and instead ask for something else (I was a contrary child!). This little tale leads nicely into the fact that 25 July to 1 August is ‘Jam Week’, or National Preserving Awareness Week to give it its full title. Now I personally am not sure we need an entire week devoted to jam, but obviously someone on high does think that, so I am duty bound to make myself, and thus you, more ‘preserving aware’! In days of ‘yore’, i.e. before such newfangled things as fridges and freezers, if you wanted to store the fruits of your labours - your home grown fruit and vegetables - you had to find some way to ‘preserve’ them. Bottling, aka canning is one way of doing this, but this dates back only as far as the 19th century when it was discovered that sealing foods in glass jars (using corks and a wax layer) and then boiling the jars, preserved the contents for a considerable period of time. Our ancestors would also dig ‘root cellars’ where fruit and vegetables could be stored during the winter months; the soil underground keeps the space above freezing temperature and the moisture in the air prevents vegetables from losing water and becoming rubbery. Apparently, the food stored in this way was still ‘good’ (or at least edible!) for between 5 - 8 months. Apples were also often stored in ‘apple lofts’ wrapped in paper or scraps of old fabric, like sacking, to keep them separate. And onions and garlic would be ‘strung’, after allowing

34

the papery outer skin to dry out, and hung in a cool dry place. Softer fruits and vege’ pose a problem though, and this is where jams, and the savoury equivalent, chutneys, come into play. In simple terms fruits like berries are boiled with sugar until a point is reached where the cooled ‘jam’ sets. Chutney making follows a similar process but usually with the addition of vinegar. The earliest known ‘jam’ is thought to have originated in Ancient Greece (although it could have been much, much earlier) when honey was used to preserve quince (a type of fruit). Fruits were also stored in syrups made from honey mixed with water which kept the air out and thus preserved the fruit to a degree. There is a recipe for ‘jam’ dating to 4th century Rome, Marcus Gavius Apicius (probably a pseudonym) wrote a cookbook entitled ‘De Re Coquinaria’ (The Art of Cooking), in which he describes a recipe for soft fruit heated with honey, which was then cooled and stored. Sounds like a jam to me! I suddenly have a yen to make jam… strawberry, raspberry, or blackcurrant - which is your favourite?

Gardener’s Calendar

While you’re sitting there with your summer glass of something cool, admiring the results of this year’s hard work, remember one word – DEADHEAD. Not a romantic word admittedly, but really important. For more blooms, take their heads off as soon as the flower has gone over. Don’t let the plant set seed or it will think its job is done and not bother flowering again. Sweet peas especially need to be picked often and always take out their seed pods. Watch out that your pond, if you’re lucky enough to have one, doesn’t start to dry out if we have hot or windy weather. If you’ve got fish or amphibians it’s best to use rainwater to top up, as tap water has nutrients which will encourage algae to grow. But if you do use cold tap water add it gradually so it’s not too much of a shock to your wildlife. If there’s lots of weeds on the surface, twirl them out with a stick and leave them on the side overnight so beasties can crawl out.

r

Lots of this month’s plants will benefit from a bit of pruning back if they start to lose energy, and are flowering less. Cut back penstemons to just above a bud, and take growth back in hanging baskets to encourage another flush of blooms. But do feed them well after this small shock. Perennial geraniums will often have a second flowering if you take the flowering stalks back once they have died.

Top Tip If you want lavender to hang round the house, always take just opened stems which will give the best scent. Then hang in a cool dark place to let them dry. 06/11/2018 18:16

The exotic species of the Peaks and surrounding areas We love our native fauna and flora, but increasingly there are exotic wildlife species establishing across the region and in many cases we need to adjust and learn to appreciate them. A ‘weed’ is a plant in the wrong place but this is often a subjective label which we attach for various reasons; and of course many alien ‘weeds’ in the wild escape from our gardens and often natives in our gardens are viewed as ‘weeds’! Furthermore, a good number of the most familiar flowers and wild fauna like mammals and birds are not native and of these many are celebrated species firmly established as part of our natural heritage. Canada goose and common ring-necked pheasant for example, are widely recognisable birds making up a significant proportion of wild bird biomass in Britain, but are nonnatives. For example, in the Peak District the iconic mountain hare which is native to Britain is not native here, or at least not for a very long time. It was reintroduced by Victorian grouse-moor owners. By contrast the specially protected brown hare is not at all native to Britain but came with Celts for whom it had deep cultural significance. It was later reintroduced by the Romans and subsequently the Normans. So this is all very confusing. The fallow deer around Matlock and Darley Dale are also not at all native but are a Mediterranean animal and the dark (melanistic) animals of North Derbyshire are escapees from a famous medieval herd at Stanton-in-the Peak. Obviously the now familiar grey squirrel is a North American import, but then many of the now regionally-extinct red squirrels were in fact reintroductions by landowners. Chatsworth even had a population of dark– coloured reds which were of German origin and could be seen up to the 1970s.

With flowers things become even more complex with exotic cultivars and varieties of what are native plants escaping from gardens to establish in the wild. We see this with wild daffodil populations now mingling with garden narcissi; and most famously perhaps with so-called ‘Spanish bluebell’ spreading widely and in fact a hybrid of the British and Iberian or Spanish bluebells. A few thousand years ago these were all one species anyway…… Added to this situation is the way in which we subjectively like some species but not others. Botanists tend to like the beautiful and exotic yellow European leopard’s-bane but are less keen on North American skunk cabbage or Indian Balsam; all are colonising the Derbyshire River Derwent.

Some of these plants sneak in unseen until they appear everywhere and one of those is the few-flowered leek with its garlic-scented leaves and now spreading along roadsides and woodland edges everywhere. Its cousin, the three-cornered leek is not far behind. Both Danish and English scurvygrass are along all our major roads where winter salt is put down. These saltmarsh species are native to Britain but certainly not to Derbyshire and the Peaks. It does make you think!
