PHOENIX BOWLS CLUB
This is the first monthly Secretaries report I have written for inclusion in the Voice Magazine on the current state of the Phoenix Flat Green Bowls Club based on Somerlea Park, Sherwood Street Leabrooks DE55 1LB.
Just before I jump straight in with the current months report, it may well be worth me taking just a little time to familiarise you with who we are, and how we arrived here because some of you may not know we even exist..
After 4 long years of no bowls being played on the park, we acquired the green on lease from Amber Valley Borough Council, along with the old Tennis Court pavilion that was being used as a groundman’s storage facility. That was back in 2019 which has now become known as the birth of the new Phoenix Bowls Club. I now jump forward 3 years to the current day June 2021.
Our League Entry
The Management Committee decided that we ought to enter the Ashfield Bowls Association League Games, so this we did, and May saw us enter the great arena of League Bowls Competitions. We have won one game outright, and have won a few rinks during the games, we have played against other clubs like the Duke of Wellington, Polly, Brinsley, Brierley Park, Rolls Royce and Longdon Terrace, and this has given us all great confidence.
You will see Bruce and Ken our Club Captains just leaning on the green’s perimeter rail at times, just looking at the state of play, and they say what a vast improvement they see in the quality of the games we play, because all our players are novice players that came to us with very little, or no playing experience at all.
Colin, our club coach, gives 3 hours of training totally free of charge to anyone that may wish to try their hand at bowls irrespective of age or experience.
Phoenix Bowls Club situated at Somerlea Park Leabrooks is enjoying its first season of league bowling since forming in 2019. It is an upcoming local lawn bowls clubs that is stirring up lots of local interest.
This newly formed club has a full democratic committee, club coach who is currently completing his bowls England coaching qualification and a social committee poised to raise funds and organise social gatherings for members as COVID restrictions lift.
A number of local residents are currently learning to play lawn bowls with Colin Hale our club coach. We welcome all our new members and hope they enjoy many hours of lawn bowls at our weekly roll up games and league matches.
