From the Editor Hi Readers, You all know by now that we’re animal mad at Voice Magazines! So with that in mind, I set our chief designer, Lisa, a bit of a challenge this month. As we now have 10 magazines in total and we have 10 dogs between us, it made sense that for International Dog Day on the 26th August, I thought it’d be nice for Lisa to draw and paint each of our dogs and then place them on a picture with a caption that suits their personalities.
painter like Lisa. I think you’ll all agree though, what a truly fantastic job she has done! I’m super proud of what she has created and now she’s back speaking to me again now, so all is good in the hood! In other animal madness, if you’re on social media, you would have seen our Alpaca adoration day! We are so fortunate that Brackenfield Alpacas let us pop over and walk some of their beautiful boys. You can see all about it online and if you fancy it yourself, why not enter our competition? It was awesome and it’s not just for the kids!!! See you next month,
Emily x I know that really, really, really deep down, and wayyyy after the fact when the task has been achieved, she loves it when I come up with these challenges but I’m not going to lie, it has not been easy, even for a talented

The Trade They bear, in place of classic names, Letters and numbers on their skin. They play their grisly blindfold games In little boxes made of tin. Sometimes they stalk the Zeppelin, Sometimes they learn where mines are laid, Or where the Baltic ice is thin. That is the custom of “The Trade.” Few prize-courts sit upon their claims. They seldom tow their targets in. They follow certain secret aims Down under, far from strife or din. When they are ready to begin No flag is flown, no fuss is made More than the shearing of a pin. That is the custom of “The Trade.”
The Trade is a classic poem written by Rudyard Kipling around 1916 which refers to Submarines, Submariners and Submarine Warfare during the First World War. Our story is about one such Submariner, Ernest Samuel Jelf from Alfreton. Ernest Samuel Jelf was born at Catherine Street, Alfreton, on the 28th July, 1886, the eldest of six children of Samuel Jelf and his wife Louisa. Samuel being employed locally as a Goods Guard on the railway. Ernest was educated in Alfreton and on leaving school gained employment with the Blackwell Colliery Company as a Collier where he remained until the 17th January, 1903 when he enlisted in the Royal Navy as a Boy Entrant 2nd Class, his initial training being at HMS Ganges. On the 29th October the same year he was promoted Boy Entrant 1st Class and then to Ordinary
4
Seaman on the 28th July, 1904 when he became 18 years of age. Ernest signed on for 12 years, serving initially on HMS Hood and a number of other surface vessels as an Able Seaman. On the 6th September, 1912 he was posted to HMS Dolphin which was the Royal Navy Submarine School and appointed Leading Seaman. Based with depot ships HMS Arrogant and HMS Maidstone he served as a Submariner until joining submarine E22 in November, 1915 when she was commissioned. In April 1916 E22 was modified to carry two Sopwith Schneider Seaplanes on her casing, the idea being that they could be floated off and used to intercept Zeppelins en-route to bomb England. It was on the 25th April, 1916, whilst returning from a launching trial just off Great Yarmouth that E22 was caught on the surface by UB-18, a German Submarine and torpedoed. She sank immediately with only two crew surviving to become prisoners of war. Sadly Ernest was lost, leaving behind a wife, Annie and two small children, living in Portsmouth and his parents at 21 Wood Street, Alfreton. We will probably never know what attracted a Colliery lad from Alfreton to the sea but he is remembered here on the town’s War Memorial along with many others. And what of UB-18? She suffered a similar fate, being lost on the 9th December, 1917 after being rammed by the trawler, Ben Lawer.

International Dog’s Day - 26 August Man’s best friend - that’s how we think of dogs these days. From tiny Yorkies and Pomeranians to ginormous Malamutes and Great Danes, dogs share our lives, our food (sometimes without invitation!) and often our beds. Dogs - or rather their earlier incarnation… wolves - were the first animal to be domesticated by humans, archaeological evidence suggests this may have begun to happen at least 30,000 years ago. Like people, wolves are pack animals, they need other pack members to survive, and if a wolf puppy were accepted into a group of humans, it isn’t hard to see that his natural wolfish instincts would transfer to his ‘people pack’. Our early ancestors may have used their tamed wolves to help them hunt, and over time chose the traits they valued most to selectively breed animals - ultimately leading to the huge variety of dog breeds we know and love today. A more recent theory about the domestication of wolves has suggested that wolves to some extent selfdomesticated. Most wolves would have been wary and aggressive around humans, in competition for food, but there may have been some friendlier animals who were able to ingratiate themselves in return for a steady supply of food. We all know just HOW wonderfully friendly and appealing modern day dogs can be when food is involved, it isn’t too big a stretch in imagination to see how a lovable wolf could have become part of a human tribe! When researching this article I tried to establish how may different breeds of dogs there are, and the general consensus seems to be that no one really knows! The “Federation Cynologique International (FCI)” is the World Canine

association (99 members from around the globe) and it officially recognises 354 breeds, but there are probably many, many more. Why do we love our canine friends so much? Could it be the absolutely unquestioning devotion they give us? The companionship offered with no strings - other than providing food and fuss of course. And what makes dogs so loving and loyal towards their human families? The clue to these answers has already been mentioned - both humans and dogs (domesticated wolves!) are pack animals at heart. Humans have hierarchies, so do dogs, we understand each other at a very primal level, and remember the dogs we share our lives with today are descended from the original domesticated wolves who chose to live with their human neighbours (or were selected because they were friendly and loving). When our canine friends pass away (step over the rainbow bridge as some say) we grieve in exactly the same way as we do for a human family member. And when a dog loses a beloved owner, it is obvious they grieve too. Humans and dogs have lived together for thousands of years and there’s no sign of this changing, and we at Voice Magazines wouldn’t have it any other way! These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved to the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. Madeira
In the middle of the Atlantic, the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo are a haven for natural beauty. The exotic colours of the flowers stand out from the blue sea and emerald green vegetation on this archipelago where two thirds are a protected area. Madeira is tiny, just 13 miles (21km) wide and 35 miles (56km) long, and has no beaches, but it does have an Eden-like beauty with its rich volcanic soil having turned it into a botanical wonderland and agricultural treasure house.
Madeira offers prime conditions for leisure boating or scuba diving. The capital Funchal is situated on the south coast of the island on a beautiful bay. Rich in history there is much to see and do including museums, markets and green spaces. The city’s cable car is the perfect way to see the beauty of the city and to visit the botanical gardens. The island of Porta Santo is the ideal place to escape from the everyday stresses with a thalassotherapy programme, beach holiday or a golf break.
The springtime temperature, felt all year round offers many open air activities, discover the heritage of Funchal or explore the coastline by boat.

Book Review
The transatlantic slave trade is a dark piece of British history. But just imagine if the story was reversed. If young people from the UK and Europe had been kidnapped from their homes and put on board slave ships for the New World. Blonde Roots by Booker prize winning Bernadine Evaristo turns history on its head and asks “what if?” It tells the story of Doris, a youngster with dreams of making something of her life. As she says, well that didn’t turn out, did it? When she arrives on a tropical island, after a harrowing sea voyage, she becomes, in the eyes of her new African owners, ugly, stupid, a savage. If this sounds a bit grim, then it is. But the author also uses humour, a sharp wit and human warmth to create a world which makes us look again at all the ways we think about “black” and “white”. It is, in places also really funny and forces us to wryly think about all the things we take for granted and the behaviour we think of as belonging to certain groups of people. It’s different, but very well worth the read.

CHESTERFIELD SHOP MOBILITY The only hire service in Chesterfield and the surrounding areas disability organisations in the Derbyshire area and was a real value add to the Charity. Both Colin and Christine can empathise with their customers as they have direct experience of the barriers people with a disability face as they both manage their own disabilities. Chesterfield shop mobility offer workshop repairs, long term, and short-term hire of scooters, they carry out regular checks and services on all scooters. The long-term loans of scooters have no time limit in fact, the longest long-term loan a customer accessed so far is 25 years.
This week I went along to shop mobility to meet the fantastic team. After getting slightly lost, I finally arrived on the ground floor of the multi-story car park on New Beetwell Street where Chesterfield Shop Mobility is based. This base is in the town centre of the beautiful market town of Chesterfield. As you can see from the picture, Chesterfield Shop Mobility have many scooters on offer, which they have all set out for you to view. 35 years ago, 3 people with the same disabilities met with Chesterfield Borough Council as they noticed that there were people struggling to get around Chesterfield and surrounding areas (Derbyshire being a very hilly place to live). They wanted a service for people to be able to accesses scooters when purchasing was out of their reach. Christine, along with two others, decided to set up shop mobility to assist the locals and visitors of Chesterfield and surrounding areas in their endeavours to circumnavigate Derbyshire and its varied attractions. Chesterfield & District Shop Mobility Charity started with 3 scooters opening 6 days a week. The services Shop Mobility provided become very popular very quickly. Shop Mobility worked together with Chesterfield community transport for many years, but separated into two Charities in 2005.
They also offer Tracks and trails, where they take special scooters for people to use on days out when the terrain is not suitable for none specialised scooters. They offer guided days out and a drop off / collection service. These services are currently used by Queens Park, Chesterfield Canal, Holmebrook Valley Country Park, and other venues. To find out more please go to the Shop Mobility Facebook page or call Shop Mobility for more detail. Christine, seen here on power chaired, says “this is far more comfortable than a manual wheelchair” for people who are in wheelchairs for most of the day this offers a more comfortable alternative. This power chaired even has a recline feature. Colin is seen here on the tracks and trails scooter, just as its name says, it is a specialised scooter for use on track and trails where other scooters would struggle. Shop Mobility Chesterfield can drop your scooter to you at the start of your trail and collect it when your all finished. Even if your finish line differs from your start line. Anthony is seen here on the town centre service scooter, ideal to get in and out of the town centre the shops. Elaine is seen here on the boot scooter; this scooter is ideal for holidays and days out. It folds to fit in most boot spaces and is the perfect addition to any day trip or holiday.
In 2010 Christine’s husband Colin joined the Charity, Colin has over 30 years of experience working within

Take to the Skies, Life's too Short Pat and Ian Farr of Newton had a busy weekend flying. On Saturday 12th of June Ian undertook a Wing Walk to celebrate his 75th birthday in April and to ask sponsors to support local charities instead of buying birthday gifts. This was very successful. Pat, a Battle of Britain baby, celebrated her 80th birthday last year. Amongst her gifts was a flight in a Spitfire which she willingly undertook on the 13th of June. Having flown over London, she also flew two victory rolls before being handed control of this short-range, high-performance interceptor aircraft that came into its own during the Battle of Britain.

We have still been able to entertain the patients 24/7 throughout the Pandemic, both from home via the internet and from the hospital, helping to give patients a taste of home while no visitors were allowed. We organised a ‘message from the family’ service as another way for families to communicate when it was needed the most. BRACKENFIELD ALPACAS
The Voice Magazine team were incredibly lucky to be invited for the unique experience of a 90-minute Alpaca trek which includes the opportunity to meet and feed all the lovely Alpacas.
of which had only been born a few hours before we arrived. Everyone was amazed at how big she was and how steady she was on her feet. They were all so cute staying close by their mothers. Happiness is a baby Alpaca!
We all arrived at Mount Pleasant Farm and our friendly hosts gave us a very entertaining and informative introduction to the Alpacas, the different varieties, their uses and a little about their individual personalities.
Continuing our trek, we visited lots of different areas of the farm, with plenty of photo opportunities. The Alpacas do tend to stop quite a lot enabling us to enjoy lots of Alpaca stroking, petting, and cuddling along the way (they are so soft and cuddly).
The alpacas were harnessed ready to go. Each chose the Voice team member they wanted to walk with, and we were off. There was lots stops to nibble grass and bushes (the Alpacas had a bit to eat as well!). First stop the area around the female Alpacas field enclosure where we all instantly fell in love with the baby Alpacas, one
We all had a fantastic time. I think each and every one of us would have happily taken at least one of the Alpacas home with us. Thank you for having us Brackenfield Alpacas we had a wonderful time.
PRIZE - Name the baby Alpaca and bring the family for a meet and greet with new mother Miss Fay, her baby and all the other Alpacas.
Last month the beautiful Miss Fay gave birth to her daughter. (Date – 20/7/2021, Time - 2pm weight- 10kg) The tan-brown ball of fluff is ready to be named. So, get your thinking caps on! We are running a competition to name the newborn baby Alpaca. The prize includes not only a meet and greet of both mother and baby but also a family ticket to do an alpaca trek with a meet and feed all the lovely alpacas at Brackenfield. To enter simply email your Alpaca baby names to the following email info@voicemagazines.co.uk with the title ‘Alpaca Baby Names Competition’, including your name and telephone number no later than 23rd August 2021 Brackenfield Alpacas gave us this information about Miss Fay:Miss Fay was born on the 2 July 2018 and weighed 11kgs, which is big for an Alpaca. As a result, she struggled to get underneath and to feed from Miss Lily (her mother) and very nearly died when she was a few days old. Our local vet, Fay, was able to save her and as a result we named her Miss Fay. Because she could not feed from her mother, we had to bottle feed her for the first 6 months. We trained her to run over to us when we whistled to get her bottle of milk. Since her rocky start she has flourished and grown into one of the biggest Alpacas on the farm. Despite this, we still call her ‘Little Miss Fay’, which is what we called her when she was a poorly baby. She was mated in 2020 with Arabian Night (a handsome chestnut brown Alpaca).

NEW OFFER FOR 2021
DISCOVER THE BEAUTIFUL VALLEY THAT CHANGED THE WORLD! For the first time ever, volunteers at two of the main attractions in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site are coming together in a new venture to share their astounding expertise with the public. Cromford Mills and Strutt’s North Mill in Belper are running a programme of escorted full day tours of the historic valley, taking in all the popular sites and some fascinating lesser-known ones. Trevor Griffin, the volunteer team manager said, “The team must have over a century of experience between them in leading tours and each one has learnt a lot more about the valley in order to spread their professionalism wider. We know that people will enjoy spending their day being personally escorted and looked after by very knowledgeable and entertaining people.” The tours are part of an experiment funded through Great Place, a joint National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England Scheme. The Chair of the Great Place Scheme Board, Professor Ian Whitehead, said “It’s important to look at new ideas which engage wider audiences with the World Heritage Site and its stories. The Experiment Fund has been a great opportunity for us to test out some of those ideas,
and we hope the tours will be a great success for the valley.” There are three different tours on offer. One covers the highlights and takes in Cromford Mills, the Cromford Canal, the High Peak Railway, Belper Mill and Darley Abbey, with walking tours and visits. The two other tours give a more detailed exploration of the Cromford and Belper areas generally. Guests are picked up in either Derby or Matlock and tours provide value for money lunch opportunities. A great deal of care is being taken to make tours covid secure with restricted numbers and the use of personal audio equipment to always allow social distancing. Tickets are currently on offer at an incredible bargain price of just £25, through the Derwent Valley Tours website. This initiative could generate further cooperation between the various attractions in the valley to make this part of Derbyshire take its well-deserved position as a major tourist destination. It also pioneers green tourism in that it allows people to visit and get around the area while leaving their cars behind, reducing congestion and pollution.

Keeping your pet safe during summer The warmer weather can be an enjoyable time for both you and your pet, however it is important you aware of the risks hot days can bring. Keeping your pets safe on a hot day Conditions such as heatstroke can be easily prevented by taking precautionary measures on a hot day. Follow the steps below to ensure your pet is kept safe. • Take your dog for walks early in the morning or late in the evening when the temperature is cooler • Never leave your pet in the car, even with the windows open • Ask a neighbour to check on your pet if they are kept outside • Use fans to increase air circulation • Add ice cubes to water to keep it cooler for longer • Cover rabbits or guinea pig cages with a wet towel and put them in the shade • If you think your pet has been stung, bathe the area in cold water and if possible, try to remove any stingers you can see • Wet your pet with a hose pipe if they are panting heavily • Spray small animals with a fine mist of water • Keep your pet inside when possible • Provide two bowls of water in case one gets knocked over • Make sure your pet has a shaded area to relax in • When barbecuing, keep your pet away from leftover bones or other foods that could get stuck in their digestive tract • Provide your pet with a paddling pool to cool off in. Symptoms of heatstroke • Heavy panting and raspy breath • Skin feels warmer than usual • Anxious expression or staring appearance • Seizures • Elevated rectal temperature • Vomiting • Collapsing, stumbling or falling down • Salivation • Open mouth breathing • Lying flat on cool services • Bright red gums.
What to do if you suspect heatstroke If you suspect that your pet has heatstroke, follow the steps below; 1. Immediate veterinary attention is recommended. Call your vet to tell them that you are on your way 2. Whist travelling in a car, keep your air conditioning on or your windows down. At the vets, treatment may include any of the following: • Intravenous fluids • Oxygen • Blood test (to determine if any organs have been damaged). Severe cases can have a significant risk of death and may require hospitalisation. Which types of pet are most susceptible to heatstroke? All pets can suffer from heatstroke, but some types are more susceptible than others. This includes; • Dogs that exercise excessively in hot weather • Short snout breeds • Pets that have recently relocated to hotter climates • Cats with shortened faces like the Persian • Elderly or ill pets • Pets with heart conditions • Pets who have suffered from heatstroke before • Caged pets that are unable to seek cooler environments • Overweight pets.

We reached deep into the archive to pull out a walk from 2013. This walk takes you along the Betty Kenny Trail and is perfect for our four legged friends. Although there is one section where you need to be careful as their is a sharp drop-off. The story of Betty Kenny is a local legend dating back to the 18th Century. It is claimed that Betty (actual name Kate Kenyon) and her husband Luke were charcoal burners who often lived in the Shining Cliff Woods under the shade of a particular Yew tree. It was in this tree that Betty used to rock her children to sleep singing them ‘rock-a-bye baby’ and it is often puported that this is where the nursery rhyme originated.
4 mile walk along the Betty Kenny Trail in Shining Cliff Woods, Ambergate A lovely walk for you and your dog along a well established trail that offers a piece of local history and some lovely views across the Derwent Valley. The route will take around 2 hours There are some moderate climbs and the terrain can be muddy and uneven so a good pair of boots are a must. The path is well marked by posts with a white stripe.

Has lockdown put your relationship under strain? As we were preparing to get married in 2012, we, as many couples do, went through a ‘Marriage Preparation’ course. Our Pastor, was fabulous and he helped us build a great foundation for our marriage, not least because he shared a lot of his knowledge of human psychology.
One concept that really made a deep and long lasting impression on us both, was that of ‘Blocked Goals’. He explained that if you look at what causes upset or discord in a relationship, it is almost always that one partner perceives that the other is standing in the way of something that they want (a goal if you will).
It plays out in an infinite number of ways… here’s an example. Let’s say you’ve had a busy day working and you’ve been thinking it would be great to snuggle up on the sofa and watch a film with your partner. That’s your goal for the evening. Your partner is also having a busy day and when they get home (or nowadays, leave their at home work station!), what’s on their mind is going for a run. After dinner you’re tidying up and thinking about what film to watch. Your partner appears in their running gear and announces they’re off for a run. You immediately feel let down… the way you saw the evening going was clearly not going to happen and it’s your partner that has ruined it. We can act as though our partner ‘should’ have read our minds and just known what we want. They come back from the run and by then you may have worked yourself into a real blue funk! You snap at them and the rest of the evening feels the weight of your simmering resentment… and yet
38
they have absolutely NO idea what they’ve done, because they had no idea that you had this ‘idyllic evening planned’ and even if they did, their idea of an idyllic evening today involved going for that much needed run!
In the past year most of us have spent much more time with our partners than we usually do - working from home for many of us… or even in retirement having our ‘out of home’ activities that we might do separately from our partners, curtailed. Of course, at the same time there’s genuinely been much to be concerned about from loss and grief: people, jobs, plans, finance, to the stress that comes with change (and hasn’t so much changed beyond recognition?). Finally, many of our usual outlets for stress have been denied us - like winding down on holiday, where you often find the ‘courtship’ in a relationship once again blossoms, fuelled by sunshine and freedom.
If you find yourself feeling irritated with your partner (or kids, or friends or family for that matter), take a moment to ask yourself, “what goal is being blocked here?”. They’ll usually be one. Then be honest with yourself; does your partner even know that they are blocking your goal and is it reasonable for you to ‘set’ goals for them as well as yourself without involving them? Setting ‘shoulds’ for other people usually ends in a butting of heads, tears or an unbalanced relationship where one person simply submits to the other. These are difficult times, let’s be kind to one another… starting with banning mind reading!

IT’S TIME FOR SUMMER
Everyone could do with some more sunshine in their lives - this year more than ever. You can now enjoy summer at home with a string of gatherings, garden parties and barbecues welcoming the sun and celebrating the beautiful weather with friends and family. With people less likely to be going abroad this year, transforming your property into your own holiday getaway is the perfect alternative. Here’s some ideas of how you can inject some summer vibes into your home.
Bring the outside in Widespan doors such as bifold, sliding patio and French doors are a sleek and stunning way to connect your home and garden, so you can seamlessly merge your indoors and outdoors through the wide openings, and you’ll be able to appreciate the beautiful views when the doors are closed too.
Add extra space Now we can invite loved ones back into our homes, creating space is key. Kitchens and spare bedrooms have been taken over by home offices, leaving limited space for guests – or just for you to relax in!
42
The beauty of adding a conservatory is that there are a plenty of different styles to choose from so that you can select one that is most suited for the space you have to work with, and the space you need to create.

Alfreton Cricket Club and Middleton CC in the Marstons Cup later in the month.
At the time of writing, the season has just reached the midway point and all three teams still sit in strong positions, England football are one day away from their first final appearance since ’66 and potentially ‘Bringing it Home’. As for cricket, the 1st team still sit top of Division One, 33 points ahead of 2nd place and 42 ahead of 3rd place. The 2nd team still sit in a healthy position despite the 32 point deduction last month, and are only 13 points off the promotion places. The 3s sit in a healthy position as well, just 22 points off the promotion places in Division 7. Despite their healthy league position, the 1s had their first taste of defeat, first to Morton in the T20 competition and then 6 days later in the league. Prior to these two defeats, the 1s had two convincing victories against Dunstall and Ilkeston. Another big month lies ahead as they look to get back to winning ways in the league and they host Wirksworth
The 2nds too tasted their first defeat of the 2021 season first to Belper Amateurs before falling short to Hollinsend Methodist CC by 7 runs. However, they quickly re-found their form with back to back convincing victories away at Ilkeston and at home to Stainsby, chasing down both scores comfortably. The 3s have only had 2 games this month, winning one and losing one as one game had been postponed. They first suffered defeat by the narrowest of margins as Whittington Wanderers knocked Alfreton’s score off with one wicket remaining. However they followed the defeat up with an extremely convincing win against local rivals South Wingfield CC, chasing down 175 whist only losing 2 wickets. Another crucial month is ahead for Alfreton CC as all three clubs look to further strengthen their bids for promotion. Hopefully by the next month the 1s can further solidify their 1st place position whilst the 2s and 3s can get into the promotion places. Only time will tell, but despite a couple of losses again its been another positive month for the club as a whole. Sponsorship opportunities are still available, if you want more information in how to do this, please contact the club’s social media pages or pop down to the club to speak to somebody. All the support is hugely appreciated by everybody in the club.

The Lambretta has left the building....
The time had arrived to return to a certain level of sanity. The Lambretta was for sale and it was time for the next generation to take up the challenge of pushing it round and swearing at it. I was tired and my abusive vocabulary fully exhausted. You can guarantee two things with a Lambretta. Firstly, you know it will be an unreliable, frustrating, life enhancing piece of Italian “Friday afternoon engineering”. The second thing is... you can guarantee that another masochist will come along to buy it with the absolute conviction that they can sort it out. Thousands have tried; none have succeeded but, as a seller, who was I to burst their idealistic bubble? A guy called Peter Richards came to buy mine. His enthusiasm was enchanting but I felt like I was dealing with a little blind puppy hurtling towards a cliff edge. Peter went for a test ride and I kid you not...the back wheel fell off!! Incredibly his enthusiasm was undiminished and therefore I lost all sympathy for him!! Peter bought it...and I breathed a huge sigh of relief.
It was car time!! By now I was working down the pit and could just about afford something...but I had to pass my test first. I failed the first one and the second one...but “third time lucky” for me and waiting at home on the drive was a 1969 Mini Cooper. I loved it!! It was red with a black roof, but not for long. A mate of mine, Gerald Griffin, who many of you will have known, had a similar car bit his had flared wheel arches, minilite wheels and was painted metallic blue. Mine had to get similar treatment... but I went for metallic green. So, this time I had the car and the clothes. But another problem was about to crop up. I’ve never been very good at administration and paperwork....something the police didn’t seem to understand...
Jim Coyle
So...what next? Amazingly I bought another one a few months later....but only kept it a few weeks and got rid of it quickly.

Mike’us sings M
This week Mike has a scoop...No not the ice cream type. A proper, news scoop. Could this be the article that takes the Voice national, maybe global? #exclusive #scoop #excited Mike is always glad to hear from you at mike. musings@outlook.com
World Exclusive!!!
George has many more of his grandad’s stories of the glory days of Hilcote Hacademicals to share with me (& you). However, George was made aware of a potentially shocking development in the football and political world that needs to be made public. Like him (& me) your first reaction on reading this might be one of disbelief, but he assures me that a) his source was reliable and b) the story was so sensitive that not one of the tabloid papers was prepared to gamble on its authenticity and pay a large sum of money for the right to reveal it. George was prepared to take a chance and arranged for a clandestine meeting in the Bull & Butcher in Selston. In addition to buying a pint of lager shandy for his source, he surreptitiously handed over a bag of Granny Smith apples, some carrots and a packet of Hobnobs. In return, George was given ‘exclusivity’, ensuring that the vast readership of Voice Magazine would be the first to hear news that will surely rock the nation. Having set the scene, be prepared to be shocked dear reader, as I reveal the content of a telephone conversation that took place on Saturday 10th July. Boris Johnson – “Good morning Nicola. What’s the weather doing in Edinburgh?” Nicola Sturgeon – “Ach, it’s no too bad. Bit windy so I widnae wear a kilt if yir thinking o’ coming up tae see me.” BJ – Sorry sweetheart, I’ve no time for that today. Too much on what with Wilfred, Carrie, and that damned dog. I just wanted to put a proposition to you about tomorrow.”
To advertise please call 01773 549 035
NS – “Whit’s happening the morra?” BJ – “It’s about the Final. The Italians may come from Rome, but football’s coming home.” NS – “Whit dae ye mean? Wish yid stoap talkin’ in riddles Boaris.” BJ – “The Euro 2020 final between England & Italy takes place at Wembley tomorrow night.” NS – “Whit? That’s no been reported up here.” BJ – “Yes, I know it’s hard for the clans to accept, but reported or not, it is a fact and I’d like to extend the sporting hand of friendship across the Border.” NS (becoming increasingly agitated) – “Jist get tae the point Boaris.” BJ – “The English boys have done very well to get to the Final. However, tomorrow’s likely triumph will feel a bit hollow because Gareth’s boys have not won every game. As a result, Nicola petal, given that England could not beat your brave boys, I’m going to suggest that the Henri Delauney Trophy be shared between England & Scotland. After all, it’s only fair.” At this point there was a loud cackling sound and the phone line to Edinburgh was lost. Readers, it’s now academic of course as the Italians returned to Rome as European champions, but was this a desperate attempt by Boris Johnson to win favour in Scotland and ‘save the Union’? You can make your own minds up on that.

Gardener’s Calendar
Watering can be a tricky thing, especially with a fruit as temperamental as the heavenly tomato. There are of course years when it’s too cold or wet for them to even make much effort. But even in a good year, they also have a tendency towards splitting or the dreaded blossom end rot – where they go black at the base. A basic rule of thumb is to water deeply, from the base, but not to over-water. Push your finger about an inch into the soil or compost and if it feels dry, water, but don’t leave the plant sitting in water. Blossom end rot comes from irregular watering and lack of calcium; cracking from too much water which makes the pulp inside swell faster than the outside skin can stretch. You can still eat split toms, just harvest them fairly quickly as they may start to rot if the flesh is exposed. Tomatoes which have started to change colour will ripen on or off the vine. As the trusses grow – ideally about five or six per plant - remove the lower leaves of the plant to prevent disease. All a bit of a faff, but worth it when you taste them just-picked. Cut back herbs now to get a fresh flush before the first frosts in autumn. Dry and freeze for winter food flavour. If you deadhead your lilies you’ll get a better show of blooms next year. Collect seeds if you want to grow more of your own plants next year. Pick dry (i.e. brown red or black) seed heads and put somewhere to dry before shaking or crushing. Discard chaff (anything that isn’t a seed.) Some seeds can be sown now and overwintered and others can be kept in labelled packets and either left somewhere dry or stored in a fridge at about 5 degrees.
r
Top Tip Try to turn your compost about once a month at the moment, or at least give it a good poke. This helps aerate and speeds up decomposition. 06/11/2018 18:16

My Right Knee A Poem by Mr Tony Ashmore When I was walking in the park one day I heard a bird singing in a tree When I looked up it Shi, made a mess on me Next thing was, I tripped and hurt My Right Knee Sat on a bench with my girlfriend next to me She said “Shall we go home and I will make you a mug of tea” Sat in the garden with a mug of tea with cream on My Right Knee I heard a bird singing in a tree So I said “Don’t you start that again”
