From the Editor Hello Readers!!
Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback regarding last month’s front covers & the mags in general, it is hugely appreciated. I have said before, feedback (preferably positive where possible!!) is always welcomed and keeps our little team motivated to keep trying different things. When we receive a lovely e-mail, like we have from some readers this month, it truly lifts us all and I am so proud of our team & how they’ve all remained positive over the last 18 months, so thank you, it’s nice to be nice! I will do an introduction editorial to the team once we’ve got the website up and running. I’m conscious that I keep mentioning team members & it’d be better to put a face to a name! However, I think it’s fair to give a special mention to Danielle regarding the feedback on the mags, as she has and is continuing to do a sterling job on the community engagement aspect of Voice Magazines – all these new articles, are pretty much down to Danielle’s vision for what people would like to read more about….so much so, I think she’ll be looking for some support soon! Mr Emily & I went on our hollibobs, whilst the rest of the team supported our very own Paul during his boxing debut for an Ultimate White Collar Boxing event in Pride Park. Paul originally signed up around November 2019 for the event in April 2020 but for obvious reasons, he has had the date scheduled and rescheduled a good
3 or 4 times! This has been a nightmare for him, not least as he’s been having to stop and start his training. Anyway, it finally happened on the 11th September, the team donned their glad rags and I speak for all of us when I say that we couldn’t be any prouder of his performance and his resolve to keep picking himself up, start training again and stand up in the ring. He raised some fantastic money for cancer research with some of our lovely advertisers supporting him both by donating and attending. Watch out Anthony Joshua, Paul is coming for your crown! The Voice ladies also had a fabulous outing this month to the Somercotes Cineroom to see ‘Little Women’. What an absolutely fabulous initiative and really well done to the organisers, we all loved it – read our thoughts in this months Swanwick edition or online. It’s ‘Cruella’ next! In other news, it’s the Christmas editions for the next two magazines – and no! I still haven’t sorted any Christmas shopping out…..I tried…..and then the moment passed again!!! Anyway, get your adverts and events in, the team are waiting to hear from you! Happy Reading,
x Emily PS: Don’t forget to mention the ‘Voice’ when you use any of the companies in this magazine

Alfreton’s Forgotten Man Alfreton’s Forgotten Man, William Carter, was born in Colliery Row, Alfreton on 25th February, 1830.
Heights until the 1920’s and William’s son was a keen player and supporter.
His childhood days were divided between getting a basic education at the local school and helping his grandfather, who was a framesmith. He went to work at the age of ten, working as a knitter, having been trained by his grandfather. However, the increased use of power operated machines impoverished domestic knitters and put many out of work. Carter was one of those affected and was compelled to work in the local mines. Feeling there was no future for him locally, in 1854 Carter emigrated to the United States settling in Needham, Massachusetts.
Sadly, William was to die in 1918 but the William Carter Company continued to prosper and remained family controlled until being sold to a Georgia based Corporation in 1990. Today the Company is the largest producer of children’s wear in the world, a fine legacy for a humble knitter from Alfreton who is largely unknown here. William, however, did not forget his place of birth, naming the road where he built his home in the USA, Alfreton Road.
He was determined to succeed and, having purchased a hand operated knitting machine, gained a reputation for producing the highest quality knitted goods in the USA. In its earliest days, the company was run out of Carter’s home in Needham Heights – knitting frames in the kitchen, sewing staff in the parlour. In 1865, as his business grew, he formed a partnership with old friends Mark and John Lee, and they built their first mill on Highland Avenue. The Lee brothers were originally from Crich and William was by this time married to their sister, Martha. As demand grew, Carter opened a second mill on Rosemary Lake and as time went on a further five. This made him a very rich man but one who was also a benefactor to the town in which he lived, serving also as a local councillor. His employees were mostly English and the majority were from the East Midlands. The English knitters were avid cricket players. Needham Heights had numerous cricket teams, some of which won championships in the state leagues. Cricket was the dominant sport in Needham

MARSHALLS COACHES CYCLE 130 MILES TO RAISE FUNDS FOR TWO LOCAL HOSPICES Initially diagnosed as IBS, Georgina Tagg actually suffered a very rare form of cancer, Pseudomyxoma peritonei, which only affects around 1 or 2 in a million people.
Over the first few months of 2021 Georgina found herself in and out of Hospice care until her passing in May. Kenneth, her Husband explained how the staff at John Eastwood Hospice had been simply amazing. “The care and support you’ve shown us both has been incredible and I couldn’t have wished for a better place to look after her at the end of a long, long road.” The retiring collection from the funeral was in aid of the hospice, and totalled £1120 and in addition, some of Kenneth’s work colleagues organised a charity cycle ride on 1st August, cycling 130 miles with proceeds split between John Eastwood & Beaumond House hospices, the original target was to raise £1000 (i.e. £500 for each charity), but with around seven weeks still to go, they beat that target and began aiming for £1000 for each charity. We were bowled over by this incredible fundraising cycle ride by Marshalls Coaches. One of the main organisers had both parents cared for by Beaumond House in Newark. "This means both charities are very close to our hearts and we would like to 'give something back'" said the fundraisers. And guess what? They have raised an astonishing £6,114. So much more than the amount they were hoping for. Isn't that simply incredible? Thank you to Marshalls Coaches and to everyone who has supported them.

Book Review Fans of TV show Pointless will know and probably love Richard Osman’s sly wit. And it comes shining through in his Thursday Murder Club series of novels which have become a huge word of mouth success. People love them. There’s a new one out – The Man Who Died Twice - which is probably why we’re seeing a lot more of Mr Osman at the moment, but a good place to introduce yourself to his characters is the first book in the series – which goes by the title of The Thursday Murder Club. Four friends, living in a quiet retirement village, meet once a week to try to work out unsolved murders. A bit like bridge, but with added drama. Then a brutal killing happens on their doorstep and they step up in ways no-one could foresee. The story may sound simple, but the twists are brilliant, the characters are perfect and it’s full of wry British humour at its best – it’s the kind of book you would imagine Mr Osman would write. Basically this book is a great feel-good experience. It’s clever, crisp and warmly written and will leave you smiling. Just as well he’s penned another then, and with more promised.

Alfreton Male Voice Choir was founded in 1903 and became well respected by a wide spectrum of the community. They performed in, and were very successful at, competition and won many trophies. Over the years fortunes rose and fell but the indomitable spirit of the choir weathered all and continued to entertain; whilst no longer participating in competition, public performance remained at their hearts. In 2009 the choir was granted charitable status and it has become a tradition that we put on a concert each year, in October, to raise funds for charitable causes. Who would have thought, at the beginning of 2020, that the world would change so dramatically and that year’s concert would not take place? In early March Covid 19 made its presence felt and we thought that choir activity would be halted until April. It soon became clear that this was not to be and, showing the determination and resolve that saw them through wars and hard times, the choir quickly mastered the technology to hold us together and, on 16th April, we held our first ‘virtual’ practice. Through the rest of 2020 and 2021 we continued to have our weekly practice on ZOOM and even made recordings, some of which can be found on our web site (www.alfretonmvc. co.uk). July 1st 2021 was our first ‘actual’ practice and
16
the beginning of hope for putting on our long-awaited concert. We like to name our events, and this year it seemed appropriate that FACE THE MUSIC conveyed our desire. This year we support AQUABOX. Aquabox is a volunteer-led charity with the aim of providing water filters to allow access to safe water for people struggling to recover in the aftermath of disasters. In addition, Aquabox supplies curated humanitarian aid items to communities as they begin to recover and re-build. The charity, the brainchild of the Rotary Club of Wirksworth, began in 1992. Since this time, Aquabox has sent out filters to all parts of the world saving and improving the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. The charity relies totally on donations to continue its work. Hoping to see you on 16th October, you can look forward to a variety of songs, some old, some new, from the choir, some excellent trumpet playing from John Barker and a little irreverence from Mick Mullarkey and the Saga Louts. Hope to see you on 16th!

Halloween - Spooky or Commercialised? Who doesn’t love Halloween - well, ME for one! That could be because I am in the (err umm) slightly older age bracket and simply don’t get what amounts to the Americanisation of the day…I mean, giving kids carte blanche to knock on doors and expect sweeties cannot be a good idea - surely?! But taking a step back from the sugar fuelled fest of today, who knows the real reason we mark the 31st of October? The origins of what we now know as Halloween are very ancient indeed, dating back to the pre-Christian Celtic peoples of Britain (and Northern Europe). The feast of Samhain (which is actually pronounce ‘sowain’) marked the end of their year sensible really as it’s the end of the growing and harvesting season and the beginning of the winter months. It was seen as the most important one of the four quarterly “fire festivals”. At that time of year it was thought the veil between the living and the dead thinned, and the souls of the dead would return to visit their homes and families. As evil spirits and otherworldly beings could also breach “the veil” at this time, people would dress up in animal and monster costumes to confuse the potential visitors and avoid kidnap. Individual hearth fires would be allowed to die down and communal bonfires would be lit for roasting sacrificial cattle, the people would feast (whilst ensuring a share was left for the spirits, ancestors, and faery folk!) and a flame from the bonfire would be used to re-light their hearth fires. When the Roman’s invaded Celtic lands they incorporated their own gods, Feralia, commemorating the passing of the dead, and Pomona, the goddess of the harvest. The advent of Christianity saw attempts to transmute Samhain into a Christian celebration, and in the 5th century A.D. Pope Boniface moved the festival to May
22
13th as a day to commemorate saints and martyrs. Funnily enough, this didn’t stop the fire festivals and so in the 9th century Pope Gregory moved the festival back to the original time of year, calling the day (1 November) All Saints Day. The day before became known as holy, or hallowed eve, which eventually became Halloween (een being another word for eve). Some of the traditions we see today can be traced back to the original Celtic Samhain, dressing up for example, whilst “trick or treating” may have derived from early Scottish and Irish traditions of going from door to door singing songs for the dead in return for “soul cakes”. Hollowed out and carved turnips with candles inside, known as Jack O’ Lanterns (after a legendary character) originated in Ireland and were taken to the US by immigrants who switched to using readily available (and easier to carve) pumpkins. Would Halloween be such a feature in UK life, particularly for children, without the influence of the US? Personally, I think not - it certainly wasn’t prominent in my childhood… although that was many moons ago! Local lad shines at first Olympic Games pt2 Concluding our interview with Jacob Whittle, the 16 year old swimmer from Alfreton. Do you ever feel you’re missing out on a ‘normal’ teenage life? Definitely not, I am living my dream! I’m 16yrs old and have travelled to Dubai, Australia, Canada, Canary Islands, Hungary, Russia, Azerbajan and Tokyo to swim and compete, meeting new people, and learning about different cultures. I may not party on a Friday or Saturday night, but I am happy with this choice. I love to surf so when I can I like to go to the South Coast or Scarborough, I also like skateboarding and love watching drag car racing. I know it might not be a cool thing, but I also love steam trains!
What was it like being with the squad in Tokyo? It was a wonderful experience. Team GB were just the best team and the swim team were so close. We had the opportunity to bond when we competed in the European Championships in May. I have come away from Tokyo even more determined than ever to keep pushing myself to be the best I can be.
Did the team look after you? Absolutely! We all look out for one another. Prior to the games I trained at the National Centre in Loughborough under Mel Marshal, with Adam Peaty, Luke Greenbank, Anna Hopkin and Sarah Vasey who were all in Tokyo. It felt so natural for me to be around this team and with these guys every day.
What’s your ultimate goal or ambition for your swimming career? I want to be the best I can be and to keep improving. It would be amazing to win a medal at the Olympics and to get a World record, but these are not my main drivers. The most important thing is to keep learning and improving. I have so much more to give and know that I am just scratching the surface of my potential as a swimmer.
Your coach of 3 years, Jamie Main, said he thinks your success could inspire other young swimmers, do you feel that has put any pressure on you ? No, but I feel I’m in a privileged position. I have hugely supportive parents and amazing coaches who have always believed in me. Without these supportive influences around me, I would not have had the belief and drive that I have. I wasn’t the best swimmer at 10yrs old, I was tall and skinny and couldn’t co-ordinate my long arms properly. However, I was passionate, willing to work hard and do whatever it took to improve. I listened to feedback and worked on and on until I got it right. If I can inspire others to believe they can achieve their dreams, I am proud to do so. Team GB had an amazing games, and the swimming team had a record performance. I hope this means that swimming receives the finance it needs to invest in local pools and clubs and that more people are inspired to learn to swim.

What an inspiration, when looking at the main picture of Ken Bond and Richard Atterbury picking up their Phoenix Bowls Clubs Internal Knock Out Trophies and medals at last night’s Club Presentation Night held at the Old School House in Swanwick. It just shows what determination and commitment can achieve, Ken joined our club in 2019 he is one of our original club members, and Richard one of our newest club members he joined in 2021, neither of them had any bowling experience before joining our club. (We provide free coaching to any club members that ask for it).
knockout competition to add to the festivities. I personally would like to thank Avis and Mick to name but two (there are many more I could name believe me). May I say, to those I have not mentioned, your tireless efforts in making the evening such a success have not, and will not be forgotten. I would also like to say that it is such a joy to be the Secretary of Phoenix Bowls club. If there are any members of the public out there that wish they had joined the club this season 2021 it’s not too late, give me a call on 01773 438077 for joining the 2022 season and to reserve you place for next year.
Ken took the winners’ Cup, and Richard took the Runners up Shield, in a fiercely fought battle to the very end. But, as can be seen from the picture, rivalry soon ends when we are off the green. The other pictures show the club members enjoying themselves during the evening. There was Play Your Cards Right and Avis put on a Picture Quiz for the more intellectual members. The evening was a roaring success with stories of past games and Stan, the Father of the Club now aged 84, telling a couple of his military monologues which were received with great enthusiasm by all members. The committee and club members wish to thank all who made the evening such a success. We are all looking forward to next year’s event when maybe, just maybe, there will be a women’s

A version of this month’s walk originally featured in the magazine in 2017, to commemorate the bicentenary of the Pentrich Revolution. The Pentrich and South Wingfield Revolution Group published a series of historical walks as part of the bicentenary. The original walk, along with 18 others can all be found on their website (www. pentrichrevolution.org.uk), along with a wealth of historical information and resources.
This walk should take you and your dog around 2 hours to complete. An undulating country walk on footpaths, lanes and roads. Care needed when crossing roads. There may be some uneven and muddy terrain, depending on the weather so please wear appropriate footwear. There can be some loose cattle on this walk, so please take care and as always, follow the countryside code, keeping dogs on leads where appropriate.
On 9th June 1817, over 300 men set out for Nottingham from villages on the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border. They thought they were part of a ‘general rising’ to bring down an unjust and oppressive government. Many joined the rising from the Swanwick area, where discontent among miners and framework knitters had already been expressed in Luddite activity and an active Hampden Club.

2. Passing Hilltop Mink Farm on the right, continue until the track turns sharply. Go straight ahead over the stile, to follow the sign to Golden Valley. Follow the footpath straight ahead down the hillside. Go under the railway line. After 100 yards, right under the 2nd underpass, walk on and cross the railway line. Immediately after the railway line take left fork up through the trees. You pass the Midland Railway and the former Swanwick Station. On your right you see the former Brittain Pit, a colliery opened by the Butterley Company in 1827 and closed in 1946.
3. Past the Brittain Pit turn right at the junction of paths (taking Amber Valley Route 4). After a few yards turn left to go down the hill to cross two stiles in the valley. BEWARE of the barbed wire on the stiles. Enter the field and follow the path up left along the hedge to reach a road. Cross over and continue ahead, alongside a second field to reach the Coach Road. This area is Butterley Park. The rebels came this way visiting houses and farms to take men and weapons. The home of Harriet Marriot was visited and a gun taken. The rebels marched on from here to reach Codnor where the
main rebel party waited.
4. Turn right along the Coach Road, until you reach the white house. Below you is the tunnel of the Cromford Canal. From the now blocked tunnel in Golden Valley it continued under Butterley Park for 2,996 yards. It is the only tunnel of its kind in the world with an underground wharf, which served the Butterley works. This magnificent feat of engineering was built by the engineer William Jessop in 1794. See the remains of the two airshafts, each surrounded by an earth mound and trees, on the right of the road. Cavalry from the Chesterfield Troop of Yeomanry and pikemen waited here on 10th June to capture fleeing insurgents. Several hid in the Swanwick Woods but were captured and joined 28 others who were taken to Derby Gaol that night.
5. At the junction by the white house go straight ahead to pass the Police Headquarters on the left. Notice it says it is OK for authorised vehicles and pedestrians to go there. Butterley Hall, built in 1790, now within the Police HQ, was the home of Benjamin Outram, founder of the Butterley Iron works. 6. Turn right and walk down the road to Derby Road at Butterley. On your left you will see the site of Butterley Works and the Gatehouse. The main body of marchers stopped here and demanded guns. The manager, Goodwin, and a few special constables refused to open the gates. Too weak to attack the Gatehouse the rebels left empty handed and marched on towards Codnor. Goodwin knew some of the men, who previously worked at Butterley, and gave evidence of their ‘character’ at the Derby Trials. See the plaque on the old Gate House of the works.
7. Turn right along Derby Road. Pass the Midland Railway on your left, then after crossing the railway bridge take a signposted path on your right. Walk alongside a field with Butterley Grange on your left and railway off to the right. Continue ahead on the footpath and continue around Grange Farm. Turn left just before the signs for the Ripley Airfield then cross a stile and bear right up the hill towards The Hayes Conference Centre. There are often cattle here, so please take care, especially with dogs. In 1817 Butterley Grange was the home of John Wright, a partner of Outram and Jessop at the iron works. The Hayes built in 1860, now a conference centre, was a POW camp for German officers in WW2, made famous by the film, ‘The One That Got Away’, of the one successful escape by a German officer. 8. Passing the Conference Centre on your left you come back to Hilltop Mink Farm. Cross back over the stile on your left and turn right to return down the track to the entrance of Hayes Conference Centre and back into Swanwick. The march proved a tragedy for local men fleeing before soldiers at the Gilt Brook. Three from Swanwick and Alfreton were tried in Derby. German Buxton (31), miner, married with a daughter, originally from Wessington, was transported for life. Thomas Bettison (35), miner, transported for 14 years, as was Joseph Rawson (32) framework k n i t t e r . Among those arrested and imprisoned but later released were Anthony Elliott, John Hall and James Robinson.
This walk is for illustrative purposes only. Voice Magazines takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

1. From St Andrew’s Church walk down the road, The Green, (B6016) following the signs to the Conference Centre. Take the first turning to the right, Hayes Lane, and walk on, crossing the road to go up to the entrance to the Hayes Conference Centre. Here turn left, at the footpath sign, to follow the track up the hill. In 1817 Swanwick was a village of miners or stocking framework knitters who faced poverty and hunger. Reputed to be a centre of Luddite activity, there was much support for reform of Parliament called for by the Hampden Club, meeting at the Queen’s Head in Alfreton. We follow the route taken by men from Swanwick and Alfreton as they marched towards Codnor. They included ‘secret committee’ men, Edward Haslam and James Barnes, who marched at the rear with his gun, William Elliott and George Rawson who had brought bullets they had cast, and Laban Taylor at whose home Jeremiah Brandreth had stayed on 6th June.

Chesterfield & District Beekeeping Association Chesterfield & District Beekeeping Association (CDBKA) has been in existence since 1947. Current membership stands at over 200 which is a record for the Association. Members have a wide range of age and experience, very few of whom meet the stereotypical beekeeper image –white, male, retired and bearded! Many are women, and young working people are now joining, thanks to the now-raised profile of bees and pollinators. We are a friendly bunch, with the experienced beekeepers always happy to give advice on the issues that can flummox newer beekeepers, or ‘newbees’ as we affectionately call them. Our region covers the South Yorkshire border down to the Matlock area taking in parts of Nottingham and Mansfield, however our base is Hasland, near Chesterfield. We have a small apiary where we teach and groups of ‘newbees’ who can gain ‘hands-on’ experience before they have their own bees. One of the Association’s main aims is education of both beekeepers and the public. We run beginners courses each spring for beekeepersto-be as we believe it’s important to know how to manage the bees BEFORE doing the exciting part of buying the first hive and bees. Support is continued with mentoring and further training sessions and workshops. More experienced members can expand their knowledge via practical and theory courses, with optional exams and assessments, supported by our own trainers and the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) of which we are a member. Educating the public is a high priority too.

Many people don’t know the difference between honeybees and bumble bees which makes our volunteer swarm collectors very busy during the swarming season. They are contacted usually via the BBKA interactive map. Swarm collecting provides an opportunity to share knowledge as people are usually very interested in what is happening with the bees. At local summer fairs and shows we spend the day chatting to people about honeybees. One or two members also give talks and presentations to local schools and groups, sometimes with bees included! During the season our apiary managers welcome members of the public to don a bee suit (which we loan them), open up the hives and invite them to take a closer look at our bees. Most find this closeness a little scary but fascinating. Honeybees are our passion and this is what we want to share with the non-beekeeping public. Not so much to encourage them to keep bees themselves but to care about them, and help by planting the right flowers in their gardens, reducing their use of pesticides and understanding what bees and all other pollinators need. For further information about CDBKA, contact the Secretary at kathy.cdbka@gmail.com For general information about honeybees, visit www.bbka.org.uk

The Lockdown 10 (or15!) I’ve heard it called… hands up if you’re carrying more pounds now than when the world first locked down in March of last year? Now that’s a lot of hands! Some people have been busier than ever during this Pandemic, but even some of them may not have escaped the extra pounds, despite being more active. There’s a number of factors that have contributed to the thickening waistlines of our nation: 1.
2.
40
Restrictions on movement: despite our daily exercise hour, the gyms and sports facilities have mostly been closed, many of us have walked a few steps to work at the kitchen table instead of a brisk walk from the bus stop or car park to work. And then our working day may’ve been spent in dangerous proximity to the fridge or kitchen food cupboards. And whatever you think of the ‘calories in versus calories out’ view of weight control, the truth of it is that if your life becomes more sedentary and you continue to eat the same diet, you’d be really lucky if you’d escaped without gaining a few pounds. These restrictions have left many of us bored, cut off from leisure or work activities which normally take place outside of our home. Lots of us have significantly increased our TV viewing over the past 18 months to fill this ‘leisure gap’ and what goes well with watching TV? It’s snacks of course? You might still be eating good healthy well balanced meals and still have found your trousers getting tighter because of the snacks and alcohol that go well with watching TV or participating in Zoom Quiz Nights! And if you’ve been hard at work, still outside of your home, your
3. And then there’s perhaps the biggest factor of all… emotional eating. When the world feels like it’s spinning off it’s axis, when everything we know is changed beyond belief, when we’re isolated from our loved ones and support networks, when we may have personally been impacted by grief, loss and ill health.. I could go on and on…. we’ve been overwhelmed by a tsunami of feelings in response to all of this. ALL of us have. And how we deal with uncomfortable feelings differs from person to person. Some can, or have taught themselves to face them, to accept them and to work through them until they are ‘processed’. Many use things like work, hobbies, alcohol, gambling to distract themselves from how they feel. And these strategies often compound the issue by causing other problems. And as I’ve said, some of those things haven’t been available to us during the pandemic anyway. Others turn to the fridge or the snacks cupboard to ‘self sooth’. We learned at our Mothers knee didn’t we that a sweetie or a biscuit makes everything better (“there, there, don’t cry”)? And sugar certainly does provide a short term boost of energy, but it’s followed a couple of hours (or less) later by a ‘crash’ that leads you back to the biscuit tin. So it’s not surprising that the two main reasons people are contacting me for help with is Anxiety and Weight Control. I’m going to share with you one of the tasks that I set people who want to stop mindless or emotional eating. It’s very simple and very powerful and if you’ve got a smartphone you can do it for free. Download a free photo collage app like Photogrid and then find yourself a buddy who is also looking to lose some weight. As you go through the day take a quick photo of EVERYTHING YOU EAT OR DRINK. The odd handful of something … every drink… everything. Then at the end of the day it’ll take literally moments to use the app to make a photo grid of your food and drink day. Send it to your friend and they send you theirs. What does the day tell you about your eating habits? What can you learn from it? This little task completed for a minimum of 10 days will not just reveal the things that will help you lose those pounds, but importantly shift your eating out of ‘mindlessness’ into ‘mindfulness’. If you try it, I’d love to know how you get on.. let me know at sarah@sarahkallend. com.

Alfreton Cricket Club What a finish to the season we have had down at the Asha Oval! Since the last update, the 1st team have sealed the league title and promotion to the Derbyshire Premier League, the 2nds are sat close in 3rd place behind Ilkeston in 2nd in Division 4N, who they play in their final game and the 3rd team have sealed promotion to Division 6N, and a victory will seal the 7N league title. What a week for our first team from the last week of August into the start of September. First, a victory on the 28th August away at Clifton after yet another strong display put Alfreton within touching distance of promotion and the league, with another power hitting performance from Muhammad Asim (78 off 25 balls) and a hundred from Tom New saw Alfreton finish on 350, before bowling Clifton out for 200 in reply. On Saturday 4th September they sealed promotion and winning the league, with yet another emphatic batting display, this time scoring a staggering 386 off their 50 overs, before bowling Dunstall out for 205. On the bank holiday Monday (30th August), the 1s travelled to Alrewas for the final of the Marston’s Cup. Alfreton won the toss and batted first, reaching 182 all out off of their 40 overs. Alfreton struck early with the ball twice, leaving Alrewas 15-2. They rebuilt and worked their way to 165-7, before 3 wickets falling for just 7 runs sealed a 12-run victory for Alfreton. Joe New won the man of the match award, with figures of 8 overs, 3-27 and scoring 34 with the bat proved crucial for the win. The 2nd team need a victory in their final game of the season against Ilkeston to maintain their promotion hopes. With a victory against 2nd place Ilkeston, they would move up into 2nd place and into the promotion zone- but Ilkeston will have to avoid victory for Alfreton to be promoted in their final game in
the following week. Whether or not promotion occurs is yet to be seen, but it has still been a very successful season for the 2s. If it wasn’t for the points deduction, they would have been promoted already and already sealed their place in Division 3N next season. The 3rds have also sealed promotion from 7N and look forward to competing in 6N in the 2022 season. Their final game before promotion was sealed, theyfaced Whittington Wanderers who were chasing promotion themselves. Alfreton scored 231 off their 40 overs, before bowling their opposition out for just 85- with Adam Carrington taking an unbelievable 6 wickets for 0 runs. If they win their next game they will win the league and seal another title for the club this season. With a league and cup double secured for the ones, potential promotion for the 2nds to play for and a league title for the 3rds, there is still plenty to play for still for the club. Hopefully all three teams can achieve promotion and the 3rds can seal the league title. A hugely successful season for ACC. Thank you for the support and I hope you have enjoyed the club updates.

LOCAL BUSINESS
FLAMECARE – CUSTOMER FOCUSED, COMMUNITY DRIVEN AND CARING
Chesterfield-based plumbing and heating engineers, Flame Care, has gone the extra mile to support NHS Heroes, the over-60s and the most vulnerable over the last year or so.
W
HAT makes any business stand out from the rest? The answer can be as simple as the level of care and service offered to its customers and the broader community. Family-run and independent, Flame Care has certainly ticked all the boxes in terms of ‘going over and beyond the call of duty’ during the challenging times of the past eighteen months. During 2021, for example, this highlyrespected company has offered all NHS staff free maintenance cover for boiler and central heating maintenance up until the end of this year. “When you consider how members of staff from the NHS have put their lives on the line for the rest of us,” said Flame Care Managing Director, Simon Fletcher. “We felt that this was the very least we could do in return.”
Flame Care’s cover plans are comprehensive and offer ultimate peace of mind. They include an annual free gas boiler service, same-day call out, free parts and labour guarantee and no excess. And they knock spots off the British Gas’ cover plans in terms of cost! The over-60s are looked after too! With dedicated care plans for sexagenarians and above, there are discounts to be had for being that bit older. Flame Care displays all the hallmarks of an independent, family-run business – unflinching integrity, meticulous attention to detail, unrivalled customer service, first-class workmanship, and longevity. Founded by Simon Fletcher on 16th March 2003, Flame Care now boasts a portfolio of over 2000 loyal and satisfied customers, who have all taken up the fantastic cover plan offer. The beauty of these cover plans is that you don’t even need your boiler
or central heating system to have been installed by Flame Care in the first place! The company is a Derbyshire Trusted Trader as well as a Which? Trusted Trader. This means that it is continuously vetted to ensure that it meets the most exacting standards of workmanship and service. The reviews on the Trusted Trader website tell their own story. Simply take a look at the stream of superb, five-star feedbacks, and excellence screams out at you. Some of the staff have been here from the start. Two long-standing and highlyprofessional engineers are Sam Hudson and Sean Jones. There are 13 staff in total and there’s a great sense of teamwork. Sales manager, Vicky High, and office manager, Kate Bower,
keep the administrative wheels turning and they receive incredible back up from the engineers, who can be called upon at any time to sort out a boiler or central heating system that has gone horribly wrong. As well as offering cover plans, of course, Flame Care undertakes full central heating installations and boiler upgrades. As an Ideal Boiler accredited installer, they have access to some of the highest quality products on the market, with Ideal boilers coming with a twelve-year warranty. Supporting the local community is in the veins of this company. Plans are afoot to organise cake and coffee delivery as part of the Macmillan Coffee Morning due to take place in September. Another of George’s Footballing Tales (Possibly............. just possibly........... a tall one)
As he grew up, George seems to recall a number of people talking about his grandad, Horace Twigg, and telling him the likes of “Ah used to know yer granda. My word George, he werabitoalad. He used to wind us up something rotten.” Those reflections on his grandad’s character, whilst not fully appreciated at the time, struck a chord with George in later years when he remembered some of the stories Horace would tell him. There was one in particular, that George suspected might have been a good example of Horace being, as they might say today, ‘a bit economical with the truth’. It concerned Enoch Tryner, goalkeeper for the Hacademicals. Now, according to Horace, Enoch was recognised as the best to ever to wear the woolly roll-top Hilcote goalkeeper’s jersey. He was a big lad, with arms like a gorilla and hands the size of dinner plates. Although not looking particularly athletic, he had a booming voice, marshalled his defence well and had never been known to drop a ball played into the penalty area. He was also a hero. Read on. At an away game against Pinxton Thistle, Hilcote were winning comfortably when, from immediately behind Enoch’s goal, flames began to appear from the top floor of a three storey building. It was soon ablaze. The referee – they were called umpires in those days – brought the game to a halt and after detailing the Thistle captain to seek assistance from the Wharf Road based Fire Station, asked all men present to fetch buckets (and the like) of water in a desperate attempt to douse the flames.
To advertise please call 01773 549 035
Meanwhile, from behind his net, Enoch had heard shouts for help. He looked up and could see from an open attic window, a lady holding a baby. She managed to catch his eye and called out “Please mister, I fear I may be about to die, but can someone please save my baby Florence?” “Yes madam,” Enoch had apparently replied, “just open the window and drop Florence. I’ll catch her”. “Thank you kind sir,” sobbed the stricken woman, “but surely the drop from this window will kill her.” “Never fear lady,” assured Enoch, “I’m the best goalkeeper with the safest pair of hands in all Derbyshire. You can rely on me. I won’t drop baby.” At this, the mother was somewhat reassured and nervously opening the window wider tossed the baby towards Enoch, standing behind his goal only a few feet away from the building. As Horace told the story, it seemed like a slow motion replay as Florence plummeted through the air and........................................landed safely into Enoch’s comforting arms. As a loud cheer went up from those who had witnessed this remarkable rescue, sadly Enoch momentarily forgot himself. He gingerly placed Florence at the corner point of his six yard box, took a few steps back and then, running forward, kicked Florence over the half way line. At the time, George admits that he was taken in by this tale. Now, dear reader, like you, he has serious doubts!

Gardener’s Calendar
It may feel like we’re heading towards less activity in the garden, but there’s actually loads to do this month.
Tidying things up before winter is a given, but some areas deserve more attention. Pot up tender perennials so you can put them somewhere out of the reach of frost. Rake leaves from ponds and clear out debris and weeds. Leave all this on the side of the pond to allow creatures to climb out and back into the water. If you have tender water plants get rid of any dead leaves and sink the plant into a bucket or tray of mud, leaving in a protected light place over winter. If you want to plant conifer hedges or shrubs which keep their leaves over winter, do it now while the soil is still warm.
Top Tip
For winter and spring colour plant up winter pansies, primulas, cyclamen and winter heathers. Hopefully you’ll have your daffs and crocuses in by now, but there’s still time to put in lily, allium and crocosmia bulbs for spring. Tulips go in next month.
Take saucers away from under pots or containers and raise them up on crocks or feet to prevent plants becoming waterlogged and minimizing the dangers of the containers cracking from frost. Clustering pots also helps protect them from ice damage.
