From the Editor Hello Readers!! So, we’ve done explosive fireworks front covers for the November edition for years, so we fancied a change this year and have gone for ‘World Nursery Rhyme Week’. It is my thought that parents and kids of all ages haven’t had it easy over the last year or so and nursery rhymes promote the importance of childhood development and education in the early years of education & who doesn’t love to cast their minds back – I wonder, can you name them all? Check out our Facebook page to see the others. Here at Voice HQ we’ve got our Christmas spirit going this month! Check out our handmade wreaths on Facebook!! Now, don’t judge us too harshly, as some of us are more creative than others and some of us follow the rules more than others! Nevertheless, it was great fun to do and I’m sure you’ll all be surprised to learn, we all got a little bit competitive with each other over this one. Why not have a go yourself; based on the next panic buying situation being toilet rolls (again!), we should all have plenty of tubes left over!!! Whilst we’re talking Christmas, the next edition is the last one of 2021 – thank crikey for that – how many more years can we say ‘next year will be better’?! Although,
in fairness, 2021 was significantly better than 2020 for many of us, but I am splitting hairs! Anyway, I digress – this is your last call for any community notices or events or anything Christmas related to be posted. If you have anything you want to tell people about, now is your time, get in touch today. Oooh, I also forgot to mention last month that we launched our 11th Magazine in the Clay Cross area. Eleven mags for eleven years, each year is beyond my wildest expectations, and I am thankful for our lovely readers, fantastic advertisers and contributors and the best team in the world. I think we might need to recruit some new team members next year at this rate with the plans I have in mind but we’ll need some special people to fit in with this crowd! Happy Reading,
x Emily

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY(Part One) Are you hanging up a stocking on your wall? It’s the time that every Santa has a ball. Does he ride a red nosed reindeer? Does he turn up on his sleigh? Do the fairies keep him sober for a day? We all are aware of the religious origins of Christmas but what of the traditions that surround it? Do you hang up a Stocking like many do? What lies behind this particular tradition? Well, according to legend, the original Saint Nicholas put gold coins in the stockings of three poor sisters. One night, the girls left their stockings drying over the fireplace. Saint Nicholas knew the family was very poor, so he threw three bags of gold coins down the chimney. The money landed in the sisters’ stockings. Since then, children have hung up their Christmas stockings on Christmas Eve, hoping to find them filled with gifts in the morning.
Christmas pyramids of wood and decorated them with evergreens and candles if wood was scarce. It is a widely held belief that Martin Luther the 16th-century Protestant reformer, first added lighted candles to a tree. Walking towards his home one winter evening, composing a sermon, he was awed by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst evergreens. To recapture the scene for his family, he erected a tree in the main room and wired its branches with lighted candles. The custom spread all over the world. The Christmas tree first arrived in England in 1841. It was brought over from Germany by Prince Albert to remind him of his homeland. The royal tree was decorated with hand-blown glass ornaments, and soon the custom was copied by families around the country.
What then of the Christmas Tree? Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition as we now know it in the 16th century when devout Christians b r o u g h t decorated trees into their homes. Some built

Thank you Bilsthorpe Support Group After over 33 years of tirelessly fundraising for John Eastwood Hospice, today we said thank you to Bilsthorpe Support Group’s remaining members as they have taken the decision to close the group. Paula Pestell (chair), Monica & Rex Powell, Marilyn Wells and Hilary Wells (all pictured) along with Judith Moore (Secretary), Fred Booth (Treasurer) and Rhona Redfern who sadly passed away this month, were the last remaining eight members of the group, most recognised for their coffee mornings within the village of Bilsthorpe, generating thousands of pounds for the hospice over the years. Unfortunately, it hasn’t yet been possible to track the actual total donated to the hospice however the members did hand over some very special items of interest and a lot of history which will be displayed for the Hospice’s 30th Anniversary celebrations next year. Twelve support groups were initially launched whilst the hospice was in the planning stage to help fundraise to generate funds for the construction of the building however fundraising was, and still is a vital element in ensuring the future of the hospice. Today just two of the original support groups remain operational, in Edwinstowe and Warsop, with the intention of the John Eastwood Hospice Trust to try to re-establish more support groups within the community in the future.

‘PROPER HOME COOKED GRUB’ We were made to feel part of the family, and nothing was too much to ask. We all made different meal choices each full of flavour and obviously cooked with passion and pride. All portion sizes were extremely generous, and the menu had something for everyone.
For starters we had: Creamy Garlic Mushrooms served with dressed salad and warm crusty bread. Prawn Cocktail served with salad and soft brown bread and butter. Spicy Vegetable Soup with a warm crusty Roll. Lightly grilled Seabass served with dressed salad, lemon, and tarragon butter.
And for Mains: Pie of the Day (steak pie), large pieces of tender beef in homemade gravy surrounded with shortcrust pastry and served with homemade chips, and seasonal selection of fresh vegetables. Lasagne served with garlic bread, dressed salad, homemade thick cut chips and peas. Fish & Chips served with either peas or mushy peas we opted for mushy a traditional English plate of fish & chips. Braised Steak which came in a big chunk of beef served with mash or chips, seasonal veg and onion gravy. Cajun Chicken burger served with home cooked chips, Onion rings & side salad.

Book Review
Piranesi by Susanna Clarke is likely to be one of the strangest books you’ll read this year. It’s the winner of this year’s Women’s Prize – presumably because it’s written by a woman rather than about women, although there is one strong female character. There’s been lots of promotion of this novel over the last few months and it might be fair to say it’s marmite. You’ll either love the mystery, the mind-games and the maze-like quality of the story, and there’s a lot of that to love, or you’ll be irritated and bored. Without giving too much of the story away – no spoilers here – it’s about Piranesi, who lives in the House, a huge world-like labyrinth of halls, full of statues, crashing tides, birds – and one other living human being, appropriately called The Other. They’re in search of Truth – or at least a version of it, but while that is going on the reader realises this is a book about things maybe not being what they seem. The descriptions are lovely and the story intriguing and all the time it leaves you questioning your understanding of what’s going on. Whether you will enjoy it probably depend on whether you enjoy puzzles and the sort of magic which messes with your perception of things. It’s certainly interesting.

CHRISTMAS FLOWER WREATH MATERIALS: • Cardboard: a piece large enough for the size of the wreath you’d like to create. • Empty Toilet Roll Holders (approx. 6) • Green and Red Paint (or any colours you’d like to use, try bright colours , or whatever colours you have. • Glue
MAKE YOUR OWN!
INSTRUCTIONS: 1. On the cardboard draw a circle – I used a dinner plate to draw round. 2. Draw a smaller circle inside the large one – I used a tea plate to draw round. 3. Cut out the centre of the circle – I find it easier to cut the centre circle into quarters, top to bottom and side to side, you are then cutting out smaller pieces. Take care not to cut into the main circle. 4. Paint the circle in the colour of your choice and set to one side to dry. 5. Paint the inside and outside of the toilet rolls with your choice of colours, 3 rolls in each contrasting colour, and set to one side to dry. I didn’t paint mine until after I cut the strips which is time consuming. 6. When the rolls are dry squash them flat and cut them into approximately 1 cm strips – I got 10 strips from each roll i.e., 2 flowers. 7. Put a small amount of glue (approximately ½ to 1cm ONLY) on one side at the bottom of one strip, stick another strip to it, and repeat to stick another strip, 3 in total. If you have a spring peg or a bulldog clip it will help to clip them together to dry. It saves you having to hold them. N.B. Make sure you are only sticking a small section at the bottom of each strip. PICTURE 1. 8. Do the same with 2 strips. Each flower will have 5 strips (petals) so carry on and glue all your flowers as described above. 9. When the glue on the strips has dried push the ends of the cut strips towards each other to reshape them into petal shapes and stick the 3 petals to the 2 petals, to complete your 5 petal flower. Clip them together to allow the glue to dry. PICTURE 2 10. Place your first row of flowers around the ring and make sure you are happy with the arrangement before gluing them. Place the centre of the flowers so that they are in contact with the inside edge of the ring. PICTURE 3 11. When the glue on the first layer is dry, place the second row of flowers over the top. The centre of the flower on the second row sits at the point where the petals of the flowers on the first row touch the next flower’s petal. The Arkwright Society returns for their 7th Industrial Revolution Conference on Saturday 13th November 2021 via Zoom.
This year, leading academics will discuss what triggered and sustained innovation in the first Industrial Revolution, with one talk focusing on modern entrepreneurship as a point of comparison. Our first speaker, Professor Joel Mokyr, Department of Economics, Northwestern University, Illinois and Sackler Professorial Fellow at Tel Aviv University, will talk on the ‘Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution: A Neglected Nexus’, to show how the development of applied science interacted with industrial change and expansion. Professor Emeritus John Styles of the University of Hertfordshire will discuss ‘Re-fashioning Industrial Revolution: Fibres, Fashion and Technical Innovation in British Cotton Textiles, 1630-1780’. He will consider how the progress from hand spinning to the Arkwright water frame and beyond was shaped by the changes in fashion in the 1760s-1770s.
Arkwright’s career might have come to move from Barber and Wigmaker to Machine Maker and Industrial Mogul. Dr Karolina Hutkova, London School of Economics will talk to us on The English East India Company’s Silk Enterprise in Bengal, 1750–1850. She will discuss how technology transfer to the Bengal silk industry came from the same Italian silk factories that influenced the Derby Silk Mill and subsequently the ‘Silk Town’ of Macclesfield, and the effect that had on the Bengal workers. Professor Simon Mosey, Director of the Haydn Green
Institute for Innovation and The Arkwright Society returns forEntrepreneurship their at Nottingham University will discuss ‘Building a legacy of ingenuity through entrepreneurial organisations’ 7th Industrial Revolution Conference This talk will help us to consider how the minds of the early innovators might have worked, by reviewing more recent innovation and entrepreneurship.
Dr Gill Cookson, Visiting Research Fellow, School of History at Leeds University will address Innovation in the Time of Arkwright through a contextual approach to this period. This will offer a view of how Richard Tickets are priced at £20! Book your place today at www.cromfordmills.org.uk/event/7th-annual-industrialrevolution-conference/ There will be 20 free places for students if they email Tricia Trice at ttrice@arkwrightsociety.org.uk from their university email - on a first come first served basis! The Dark Side of Nursery Rhymes Nursery rhymes…nonsense for kids, or coded messages containing dark undertones? Read on to see why the latter may be closer to the truth than we would maybe like to think! “Nursery rhymes”, with their distinctive sing-song rhythms and melodies; date back centuries, as far back as the 14th Century in fact. Modern childhood psychologists believe they can help a child’s mental development and spatial reasoning, but it is doubtful our antecedents were thinking in those terms when the majority of the ditties were composed. Let’s have a quick look at a few of the best known rhymes: Baa Baa Black Sheep refers to the wool tax imposed by Edward I, when new rules said a third of the cost of a sack of wool went to him, another went to the church and the last to the farmer. In the original rhyme, the ‘little boy who lived down the lane’ ended up with nothing! The phrase ‘black sheep of the family’ stems from the fact that the wool from black sheep could not be successfully dyed and thus had less value. Mary, Mary Quite Contrary is believed to be about Queen Mary (aka Bloody Mary) and concerns the torture and murder of Protestants, the garden being an allusion to graveyards full of Protestant martyrs, whilst “silver bells” were thumbscrews and “cockleshells” are thought to be instruments of torture which were attached to male genitals. Nice. Not! Oranges and Lemons describes a condemned man’s journey towards his execution in London, passing various churches on his way. Rock-a-bye Baby alludes to the rumour that the son of King James II was actually another man’s son, smuggled into the delivery room in order to ensure a Catholic would once more ascend to the throne of England. An early recorded version of the rhyme ends with the footnote “This may serve as a warning to the Proud and Ambitious, who climb so high that they generally fall at last.”
32
Ring a Ring o Roses, we’re all familiar with the idea that this rhyme, and the associated little dance so beloved of kids, is connected with the Great Plague of 1665. The ‘rosie’ being the distinctive rash that developed on the skin of sufferers, and the ‘posies’ referring to the scented flowers required to camouflage the hideous stench of decaying flesh and rotting bodies. Even the seemingly innocuous ditty Ladybird, Ladybird, fly away home, may refer to the persecution of Catholics in the 16th and 17th century, when Catholic priests were often burnt at the stake. Whilst Lucy Locket is actually connected to an argument between two prostitutes in the 18th century! So much time has elapsed since these nursery rhymes were first written that modern day mothers singing them with their children can be forgiven for not realising the death, destruction, and darkness so many of them allude to. And anyway - who really cares these days, they’re fun, kids enjoy then and they’re part of our heritage and tradition. These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved to the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. KIDS & FAMILIES
This month we go back 4 years to October 2017 to revisit a perfect autumnal walk. This walk has a bit of everything. We begin walking through a country park with some great views before looping round to pass the historic and picturesque Annesley All Saints Church and then onto the pretty Annesley Forest. A mid length walk which should take you and your dog around 2 1/2 hours to complete. There is a mix of terrain, with some uneven and muddy bits, particularly depending on the weather so please wear appropriate footwear. There is one particularly busy road so be careful, keep dogs on leads if unsure and as always, follow the countryside code.
5-MILE CIRCULAR WALK FROM NEWSTEAD & ANNESLEY COUNTRY PARK
START: NEWSTEAD AND ANNESLEY COUNTRY PARK (CAR PARK, OPPOSITE THE PIT MICROPUB) TILFORD ROAD NEWSTEAD NG15 0BS.
36
1.
Standing with your back to the car park entrance, walk straight ahead to pass through a large wooden gate, pass by a signboard reading ‘Newstead and Annesley Country Park’ on your right and then continue along a wide and well laid path.
2.
After a short distance you will pass a lake and a building on your right. Pass through a gap, continue straight ahead along the wide path climbing gently uphill, to pass a second and then a third lake on your right.
3.
After the third lake you will begin to descend for quite some distance until reaching a large metal gate. Pass by the gate and then pass beneath an arch bridge. After some distance pass by another large metal gate and continue ahead to reach a road.
Don’t forget to mention Voice Magazines when responding to the Ads
4.
Turn right and continue until reaching a T junction of roads. Turn right and after a short distance turn right again along ‘Moseley Road’.
5.
Continue along Moseley Road to the very end and then turn left along another road. Follow this road to the very end and then turn left once more onto ‘Byron Road’. After a short distance turn right along a road signposted for ‘Parish Hall’. After a short distance pass the Parish Hall on your right and then continue straight ahead along a tarmac footpath.
6.
7.
8.
After a short distance pass through a metal width restrictor and then continue straight along the path going uphill. Near the top of the hill pass through some concrete post and, almost immediately, turn left along a footpath opposite a bungalow (No.9) to pass between some houses. Continue straight ahead to walk across the top of a cul-de-sac and then towards a block of garages. Thread between the garages and pass through a metal chicane to continue along a footpath. After a short distance pass by a graveyard on your right and then a church on your left. Immediately after the church cross over a crossroads of footpaths and continue straight ahead along a footpath into some trees. Continue downhill until you reach a road. Turn left along the road for a short distance and then turn right onto a lane going uphill passing a sign on your right reading ‘No unauthorised vehicles’.
9.
At the top of the hill the lane bends sharp right. At this point continue straight ahead to pass through a gap onto footpath heading into the trees. Ignoring all the other paths to the left and right, continue straight ahead along this path. Eventually the path bends around to the right. Continue for a short distance to pass by a large metal gate and to a main road.
10.
Cross straight over, pass by a large metal gate and then continue along a well laid path. Follow the path around to the left and then continue straight ahead going through woodland. After some distance you will reach a major junction of paths. Take the left option going gently uphill and then continue straight ahead.
11.
Continue on the main path for some distance and then pass by a metal gate to reach a main road. Cross straight over the road pass by another metal gate and continue straight ahead along a footpath going through woodland.
12.
Continue along this path for some distance until the path splits in two. Take the left split, continue straight ahead and then continue to go steep downhill. At the bottom of the hill you pass through what is often a very wet boggy patch of land making the path ahead difficult to follow. Be sure to continue straight ahead going uphill.
13.
Ignoring all other paths to the left and right, go straight to the very top of the hill and then drop back down the other side. At the bottom of the hill and at a crossroads of footpaths turn right along a well laid footpath. After a short distance pass by a large metal gate and to a road.
14.
Cross straight over the road to pass through a wooden chicane and onto a recreation ground. Continue straight ahead passing a skate park on your right and then pass through a wooden swing
gate onto a road.
15. Turn left to follow the main road, ‘Tilford Road’, with terraced houses on the left and then after some distance pass’ Newstead Centre’ on your right. After a short distance cross over a railway line and then after a very short distance turn left back into the car park. This walk is for illustrative purposes only. Voice Magazines takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

Sarah’s Mobile Hair Bay Sarah’s love of hairdressing was first aroused when, as a child, she received a Girl’s World hairdressing toy as a present. The 1980’s hairstyles inspired her to be creative and she felt that hairdressing was the way forward for her future. Sarah’s parents, however, did not feel it was a steady job and encouraged her into factory work. She worked in a factory for a number of years but the passion for hairdressing always remained in the back of her mind and finally she returned to college in Derby to take her NVQ 1, 2 & 3 exams in Hairdressing. Qualifications under her belt, Sarah realised she had found her true passion. Nothing made

Turn off the alerts on your phone … hey turn off your phone altogether and allow your focus to drift onto something refreshing or new. I looked across at my husband in the dark of this Autumn morning and almost perfectly in sync we said, “it’s too early!”. The reality was that at ten to seven on a Monday morning with three dogs to sort out and both of us with businesses to run, it really wasn’t too early, it just felt like it. Maybe you quite fancied a lie-in this morning or certainly like the idea of getting a little more sleep in your life? But what about those mornings when you know you’ve had enough shut eye, but everything still feels like it’s in the ‘too hard’ box? Fatigue or just feeling weary often has nothing to do with sleep, instead it’s about the need for another kind of rest. Sleep of course IS a form of rest, but rest comes in many forms and it just maybe that it’s one of these other types of rest that your body is craving. So besides sleep, what are some other ways in which we can find rest and be refreshed? Emotional Rest: if there’s too much going on, we can become overwhelmed. Consider whether you are taking on other people’s ‘stuff’ maybe you have fallen into ‘fixer’ mode where you feel responsible for changing people or situations single-handedly. Maybe it’s your own feelings that are over powering you? Learning to accept
42
Social Rest: in these weird times of Pandemic normal social activities have been curtailed and whilst the beginnings of returning to our old patterns is welcome, it can also be exhausting. Those who are more introverted in nature get their energy from time spent alone, so if that’s you, be sure to hold something back. Spiritual Rest: whether its faith led activities, volunteering your time to causes you feel strongly about or spending time exploring your purpose and goals, time spent on the ‘inner you’ always refreshes. Physical Rest: other than sleep, there are active ways in which our bodies can get some respite. Exercising regularly believe it or not rests the body as exerting our muscles fully can help us to fully discharge the tension in our bodies, rather than holding onto a permanent state of tension which is never quite dispelled. It doesn’t have to be hugely exerting either: a relaxation class, yoga or massage will bring the same effect. Rolling different rest type activities together can be really effective. Go for a walk (Physical) with a friend (Social) or turn off your phone (Sensory) and count your blessings (Spiritual). And it could just be that a lie-in is exactly what you need after all!

5 Reasons to be Cheerful this Winter 1.
Winter is beautiful
Frosty mornings, the fresh air, sparkling cobwebs, the long shadows as the sun dips… there are so many beautiful things about Winter. Getting out for a walk and enjoying your surroundings is a great way to keep both body and mind healthy. But for some people, getting out of the house isn’t an option. Our customers often tell us that if the weather is bad, it’s difficult to get around. If that’s the case, take a moment each day to enjoy what you can see out of the window or in your garden. Pick up a pen and draw something or write a poem about what makes Winter beautiful.
2.
Birds flock to our gardens
Our gardens, balconies and windowsills are perfect for attracting wildlife in search of scarce Winter food. Put out sunflower seeds, peanuts or fat balls, and don’t forget to provide some water for them too.
3.
The festive season
Sending cards or letters to those you love, watching Christmas films, spending time with family and friends, or simply wishing someone a ‘Merry Christmas’ in the street – it all gives you a sense of warmth and hope during the Winter. And if restrictions stay as they are, we will be able to gather on Christmas Day. One of our customers said: “My daughter and grandchildren don’t live far away. We’ll definitely get together for Christmas. I can’t wait.”
4.
5.
Without Winter there would be no Spring
One of the best things about the British seasons is that as one departs, another arrives. Just think about how much we appreciate those early daffodils that appear as the weather changes in the Spring, the birth of new lambs, the longer, sunnier days. It always comes with a feeling that after the Winter, we’ve all earned it! If you’re concerned about staying warm and well this Winter, Age UK (0800 169 65 65) has a useful guide called ‘Winter Wrapped Up’. If you need a printout of it, please call us and we’d be happy to help. At AHM Installations we prioritise quality of life over everything. We enjoy helping people, which includes listening to the challenges our customers face at home. One of the customers we spoke to about their concerns for this Winter has disabilities. We’re delighted that he can now enjoy a nice warm shower on a cold winter’s day because he feels so much safer with his new shower cubicle, grab bars and seat, which we recently installed. Call our family-run team on 0115 936 1886. AHM Installations install safe, affordable, stylish bathrooms for anyone with limited mobility.
Snuggling up with a hot drink and a good film or book
Snuggling under a blanket with a mug of something warm and something to watch or read is a comforting thing to do at any time of year. And in the cold winter months, keeping warm also has the added benefit of helping to stave off those winter bugs. We’re sold!

Alfreton Cricket Club Well, we have finally come to the end of the season, and what a fantastic season it has been for the club. A League title and Cup win for the double for the 1st team, the 2nd team just missing out on promotion on the final day, despite a hefty points deduction earlier in the season and the 3rd team sealed the league title in their final game of the season. For the first time, the club also ran a successful women’s team who participated across various games and tournaments across the summer, whilst the junior section once again thrived, with the club creating many opportunities for children in the area to participate within cricket. The work and new square at David Nieper Academy has been completed, maintained and will hopefully be ready for next season for the club to utilise from 2022 onwards. For the first team, Alfreton held 2 of the top 3 run scorers in Division 1, with Tom New in 3rd place with 881 runs in the season, and Muhammad Zaroob hitting an impressive 1087 runs across the 2021 season. Matt New was the top wicket taker for
the 1s, with 43 wickets taken in the league, which was the 3rd most overall in the league. For the 2s in Division 4N, Callum Spencer was the joint 2nd highest wicket taker in the league with 38 wickets to his name, whilst Owen Comins was the highest run scorer for the 2nds, with 603 runs (3rd highest in the league). For the 7N Champions in the 3s, Adam Carrington was both the highest run scorer and highest wicket taker for the 3rds. He finished with 26 wickets and a league best 647 runs throughout the season, including a season-club high innings of 184. It’s safe to say it has been an extremely successful season for the club and one that excites everyone involved as to what the will hold. There will be hard work to come over the winter, but winter nets will restart in the New Year, in preparation for the 2022 season. Thank you for following us throughout this season, and we hope to see you down at the Asha Oval once again next season!

Yet another of..........George’s Footballing Tales George had been sent to the pantry – it was where Grandad Horace kept his supply of ‘little treats’ - and bringing back a packet of Spangles for the two of them to share, asked “What was the most exciting game that you saw at the Harena?” Horace thought for a minute and started, “Nah then lad, Ah reckon it must ha been the FA Cup replay agin South Wingfield Wanderers back in 1895.” NB – for the benefit of all, I’ll drop the verbatim account as the broad Derbyshire dialect used by Horace might go against local parents’ desire to have their kids talk ‘proper’. On Wednesday 13th February 1895, the residents of B Winning (Hilcote to you and me!), and many surrounding villages, were beside themselves with excitement. After a draw the previous Saturday, they now knew that the winners would face the mighty Notts County, current holders of the Cup, at their Trent Bridge ground in the next round. The match was scheduled for a 2.30pm start, to allow for extra time should the teams not be separated after 90 minutes. Local schools allowed pupils to attend and this, combined with many colliers coming straight to the match at the end of their ‘early’ shift, led to the kick off being delayed by twenty minutes, as a record crowd assembled at the Harena. This was to prove crucial. At full time, the score was 2-2, and light was beginning to fade. Before extra time could begin, a big black cloud appeared over Blackwell,

slowly moved east, and it became clear that total darkness would soon envelop the Harena. Calling the two captains together, the umpire suggested that the tie be settled upon the toss of a farthing. Clarrie Flint, Hilcote captain, wasn’t having this and asked for five minutes grace as he had a possible solution. This was granted and he instructed his players to quickly spread out and make a specific request of the spectators lining the touchline. As they returned in the gathering gloom, Clarrie asked the opposition to line up for kick off and for the umpire to restart the game. They looked puzzled, but at the high-pitched sound of the whistle, the Harena was instantly bathed in bright light. George, understandably captivated, wanted to know how this apparent miracle had been achieved. It was no miracle. The players had apparently asked colliers on the touchline to strap their Humphry Davy Safety Lamps to the foreheads of many of the boys present, and then lift the youngsters onto their shoulders. As the whistle sounded, lamps were switched on and hey presto, Hilcote Harena became the first stadium in the entire world to stage floodlit football! Not only that, Hacademicals went on to score the winner and secure that tie at Notts County. George takes pride in the fact that his grandad was there to witness footballing history being made and is more than pleased to share this little known story with you!

Climate Change: It’s Already Here. Climate change will affect us all - in fact, it already is - Voice Magazines have decided to run a series of articles addressing the issues, and we’ve called upon Hope Valley Climate Action (HVCA) to be our guides and information partners going forwards. HVCA was established in late 2019, and as their name suggests, it is based in and around the Hope Valley in the Peak District; its aims are to address the climate emergency by reducing carbon emissions and increasing biodiversity. The group was granted Charity status at the end of 2020 and is run by a board of trustees. The work they are doing, and the messages they are sharing, are just as relevant to the rest of the Voice Magazine distribution areas, and we’re delighted to have them on board. It’s rather appropriate that a climate action group be founded in the Hope Valley, as arguably the area and those surrounding it could be said to have been the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution (although Ironbridge in Shropshire may disagree). In 1771, Richard Arkwright chose Cromford, a small village some 20 miles from the Hope Valley, to be the location of the first water-driven spinning factory. This factory soon had over 300 workers, rising to 800 by 1789, and the factory model of production was adopted across the world. The ever increasing mechanisation, and use of fossil fuels to drive it, led inexorably to the situation we find ourselves in today. Time may be running out for the world to completely halt climate change, but taking action now could mitigate the effects and. This month (November 2021) sees Glasgow hosting COP26 - the UN’s 26th annual global climate summit. World leaders and thousands of negotiators, government representatives, businesses and citizens will gather together for twelve days. This COP (which stands for ‘Conference of the Parties’) is seen by many experts as being uniquely
important, perhaps the last chance to agree on strategies to achieve the target of limiting global warming to a max 1.5 c° set at COP21 held in Paris in 2015. Countries at COP26 are being asked for ambitious emissions reductions targets to reach net-zero by the middle of the century. In order to achieve this, the phase-out of coal and other fossil fuels will need to be hugely accelerated; deforestation will have to be stopped, and investment in alternative fuel sources massively increased. International financial institutions in both the private and public sectors will need to work together to secure trillions of dollars in funding for the future to be secured for our children and grandchildren. Will the attending countries be able to work together in order to protect the planet we all call home? Who knows! But there is one certainty we can’t ignore - and that is that if they don’t, we may well lose the opportunity to repair the damage we humans have done. We can all help, even the smallest of changes can have a big long term effect.

Gardener’s Calendar
We’re largely getting to the stage of making things ready for next year’s garden, while still looking forward to some over-winter colour and looking after the most vulnerable areas.
If you have parts of the lawn which get waterlogged during winter you can spike the area properly now and brush grit or sharp sand into the holes to help improve drainage. You’ll also help the lawn by raking up fallen leaves which block out light and harm grass growth. As much as possible also take piles of leaves away from bushes and shrubs otherwise slugs and snails might use them for overwintering. Which isn’t to say you shouldn’t create wildlife habitats around the garden, just maybe not round your prize perennials. If you’re wanting to divide and replant perennials which flower before next July – the likes of oriental poppies or lungwort – it’s best to do them now. Replant the same day if you can so they don’t suffer too much shock. Roses planted in exposed spots, should be pruned now to stop windrock over the winter. Cut off most of this year’s growth and if there’s any sign of blackspot, don’t put cuttings in the compost as it will transmit the disease. Tulip bulbs should be planted by the end of November. And hopefully there will be a good bit of colour this winter if you plant outdoor cyclamen, (not the big showy ones, they’re not usually hardy enough to survive the cold), hellebores and winter pansies.
Top Tip
Bubble wrap your pots to stop them cracking. Not all pots are safe from frost.
