BELPER MARLIN SWIMMING CLUB

Ever thought of competitive swimming as a sport for you or your children? Belper Marlin Swimming Club is a competitive swimming club based at Belper Leisure Centre but also train at Alfreton and Heanor leisure centres.

All teaching is based upon the Swim England National plan for teaching swimming, and we employ a lead teacher at the club assisted by volunteers. The first competitions at this level would be at the club sprints in June and the club championships in November each year. As they improve their skills and stamina the athletes are encouraged to enter open meets and county championships.

The club also employs 4 professional coaches. Mike Brett is the Chief coach, with a Level 3 qualification who captained English Universities in 1982, and continues to swim having held National individual master’s records and Team World records. Mike has been coaching at the club for over 20 years now.

The ethos in the coaching team is to encourage each swimmer to achieve their potential. This is done with a huge emphasis on technical skills on all strokes as well as dives and turns. This means less unfocused length swimming and more coaching feedback and fun. Using this approach Marlins have gone from strength to strength.

Belper Marlin SC has been in Division 1 of the West Midlands National Swimming League for the past 7 years, they regularly win multiple medals at county and Midland level. We have also had a regular stream of National qualifiers and even medallists from the club. Marlins is a club from a small market town, and we punch well above our weight in our swimming achievements.

We have a maximum of about 9 hours training in the pool per week but are also part of the Derbyshire development pathway, encouraging our elite swimmers to train with Derventio Excel [county squad]. They then compete for DX at Midland level and above but still swim counties and Arena league for Marlins. Ross Davenport is our most famous swimmer having won 2 gold medals in the 2006 Commonwealth games.
