Mansfield Hockey Club are back on the pitch!
Mansfield Hockey Club are a friendly and competitive club, based at Kingsway Park in Kirkby in Ashfield. We cater to members of all abilities and of ages 13+, with our oldest member being 78 years old!
We’re back playing league hockey again after the winter break.
We’ve had around a month between games, from the middle of December to the middle of January. So, the return is always an ‘interesting’ one! One or two of us have probably had a few too many mince pies and most of us take a week or two to break ourselves back into playing. For some of our more ‘mature’ players stiff backs and tight hamstrings are the common complaints due to the playing position hockey requires, but it’s all quickly forgotten the moment the whistle blows on a Saturday!
Quite honestly, it doesn’t matter what age you are nothing beats the buzz of a competitive game and being part of a team. Win lose or draw, the most important thing is we do it together. Since I joined the club a couple of years back, after an absence from the game for several years, I have been so impressed with how open, friendly and supportive the club has been. I just wished I had done it earlier!
The biggest frustration this time of year is cancelled games. Frozen pitches are common and a number of games were cancelled on the first week back. So, fingers are crossed for better weather in coming weeks so we can all get back on the pitch!
We are back training on Wednesday and Thursday evenings (weather permitting), So, if you want to find our more about how to give it a try, or get back into hockey please get in touch using the contact details below.
We are always on the lookout for new members so please contact us on any of the following channels if you are interested in joining!

Book Review
American writer Richard Ford writes about relationships – mostly between men and women, but others too. He explores big themes, but makes his stories intimate. These are people you can care about, for all their flaws and imperfections and for simply being human.
His latest book, Sorry For Your Trouble is a series of short stories – a form which people either like or don’t - and as with his longer novels they’re shot through with a wry humour at the absurdities of life and compassion for those of us who quite often make a mess of things.
They aren’t necessarily an easy or quick read and they’re probably not the thing to save for a beach read (yes of course it will happen this year!!), but they are thoughtful and rewarding.
If you don’t like the idea of short stories Mr Ford also wrote a brilliant series about fictional sportswriter Frank Bascombe – starting with The
Sportswriter, then Independence Day, The Lay of the Land and Let me be Frank With You, which are also really worth a dive into and which may well get you hooked.
