What a strange month it has been and, as predicted, busy! As you all know, I stay out of all things political in here both nationally and locally – point of principle - but just sometimes, I have to shake my head publicly and then go back to try and deal with, like most of you I’m sure, the worsening cost of living crisis, rising costs of food, heating etc, nevermind the costs of trying to run a business! Our 5th paper price increase of the year has landed this month – it’ll be a strange month when we don’t get one! And what is being done to help the – you know – constituents?? Still, onwards we trundle in our daily lives and let’s hope that the powers that be in whatever capacity, notice the cliff edge before we drive over it at full pelt! Anyway, speaking of being ‘shaken down’ on the way in and the way out – we went to Centre Parcs for the previously mentioned Cousins ‘Sten do’ (stag and hen do – Sten is the nicer version!) and jeez, I felt like a fatted calf being shuffled from one financial pilfering zone to another!! Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate that it works brilliantly from some people. However, I’m not sure it’s for me anymore. For example, nobody can come as a day visitor anymore (so all the people who were part of the wedding brigade could not obtain a day pass – it’s a thing of the past since covid apparently!) and if you left the site (which you could do freely btw), crikey me, if you came back in, well, I haven’t felt like that since a check point in Egypt (only missing the sub machine gun!), your answers had to be swift, accurate, personal and without hesitation! I mean, it wouldn’t be so bad if I hadn’t seen that particular ‘gatekeeper’ 4 times that day alone.

Also – and this one has really stuck in my gullet – I sold a kidney to obtain a 3hr spa session in the evening which began at 6pm. Obviously, when you can’t get in your villa until 4pm, you have a mad dash to get your car, follow the snaking line of cars to get somewhere near your villa, unload and drive your car back to the car park, then collect your bike and head over to the Spa. I can’t think why but I had Benny Hill music in my head during that particular event #stressful…..you need a spa after that ordeal! Anyhow, you get chucked out at 9pm, get out your wet gear, walk into the centre cos you’re hungry, only to find that everywhere stops seating people at 9pm, you can’t get a takeaway from the 17 items (yes I counted) takeaway list because you should have booked a slot in the afternoon, the supermarket is not open to sort yourself out AND you obvs can’t get a Deliveroo or just eat or anything external because ‘you shall not pass!’ I haven’t been told what time to go to bed since I was a kid and even that was negotiable – ask my parents! Anyway, because of various other disasters before we left home - egg and cheese omelette with a slice a bread it was #rocknroll. Ultimately, a fun time was had by all ….. until 4 days before the wedding and I’m on crutches!!!! See you all next time,

Our Oceans are in Danger When you look at a satellite image of our planet, you may wonder - as I do - why we have named it Earth, given that the vast majority of the surface is covered by water. Any extra-terrestrial flying past could be forgiven for thinking that the beautiful green and blue globe below them was a water world. Planet Earth is 71% covered by oceans, and it was in these very oceans that, until recently, scientists believe life itself developed. However, newer research suggests that the first single cell organisms developed in “muddy pools” on land and not in the depth of the primordial oceans. The scientific debate is still open, and no doubt will switch back and forth between muddy puddles and the ocean depths as the origin of life, but one thing does seem clear - water was necessary for life on this planet to begin. Sadly, given the very clear indications that water, and thus the oceans that cover the planet, are vital to life’s existence, we humans have done a pretty poor job of looking after our rivers and seas. We’ve overfished, hunted and killed our close cousins, the whales, to dangerous levels, and allowed pollution to enter the oceans, seas and waterways of the world. A quick internet search revealed that there are thought to be 5.25 TRILLION pieces of plastic rubbish currently polluting our oceans. 269,000 tons float on the surface, while some four billion plastic microfibres per km2 litter the deep sea. I hadn’t even heard of plastic microfibres, so had to look that up too…they are described as very small thread-like fibres that can come from both natural and synthetic fabrics. By 2050, ocean plastic will outweigh all of the ocean’s fish! These plastics can have a massive impact on life in the seas; fish and other sea life can ingest them, causing digestion problems which pass up the food chain and

ultimately to us - and that’s before factoring in chemical and heavy metal pollution. The floating debris blocks out the sunlight, which prevents light from reaching corals and plant life, thus inhibiting their growth. Statistics show that as much as 27 per cent of monitored reef formations have been lost, and as much as 32 per cent are at risk of being lost within the next 32 years. Sitting in our inland homes, it is very difficult to see how we can do anything to improve this dire situation - it feels like anything we do try will be a mere “drop in the ocean”, but it shouldn’t stop us from trying to do our part should it? There are some steps we can all take… • Reduce your use of single-use plastics • Support legislation to curb plastic production and waste • Recycle properly • Avoid products containing microbeads (found in some household and beauty products) We only have one planet, we need to look after all of it - including the oceans, seas and rivers.

AMBULANCE ! The Ambulance Service have had a difficult time over the last two years but remain one of our most treasured institutions. But what about its history? How did Ripley people cope before the days of flashing blue lights? Ambulance carriages were first widely used in the Crimean War; by the 1880s, many of the local collieries had their own specially adapted horse-drawn cart because accidents were frequent occurrences in the pits. The St John Ambulance Brigade was formed in 1887 and in 1891 the local Brigade was presented by the mine owner Charles Ford with an ambulance carriage, designed and constructed by Holmes of Derby. By this time the Butterley Company also had their own vehicle.

This one vehicle, supplemented by those of the Pentrich Colliery and Butterley works, (and a borrowed one during the war) provided the service until 1948 when, with the establishment of the NHS, the ambulance service was created as a separate county-wide body. In 1955 Ripley’s ambulance station opened in Ivy Grove. And flashing blue lights weren’t officially fitted to ambulances until 1989.

When Tom Neal, an injured miner, was taken in such a carriage to Derby hospital in 1910, he lost so much blood on the way that he later died, and his death spurred on the building of Ripley hospital, which opened in 1912. During World War 1, motor ambulances were widely used, and in 1921, the Denby Drury-Lowe Company claimed to be the first in the area to possess one. Butterley soon followed, but Ripley itself still relied on a horse-drawn vehicle. It wasn’t until 1937 that the council took delivery of a Bedford two-stretcher motor ambulance, costing £356. It would have looked something like this London model.

Slimming World Recipe Halloumi, Potato and Aubergine Bake Method:

Who doesn’t love squeaky cheese? It always makes me think of eating al fresco on sunny days and this recipe gives you the perfect fix with this lovely smoky aubergine and tomato sauce and tasty veg.

1. Preheat your grill to high and heat and add the tomatoes, line the grill pan with kitchen tomato purée, garlic, cumin, foil. Prick the aubergines all over paprika and chilli flakes. Cover with a fork, put them on the grill and cook for 10 minutes or until pan and grill for 15-20 minutes, softened, stirring occasionally. turning regularly, until blackened and tender. Rolls-Royce Rugby Club

As the rugby season comes to an official end, Rolls-Royce Rugby Club ended the season in style with a couple of good results. We also celebrated the season with the ‘Adults’ and ‘Minis & Juniors’ end of season parties which were enjoyed by all. Awards were presented to the adult player of the season, most improved, coaches’ player and club man of the year. The children were all presented with a trophy to celebrate their achievements of the year. We now look forward to the last few rugby events of the season, which will end with the Elliot 7s tournament, a rugby 7s style tournament on the 21st of May. Due to the season coming to an end, the club is now offering a fun fitness and touch rugby taster session each Thursday evening through the summer months for new players to come and experience rugby without taking it too seriously. This is a great opportunity to meet new people, have lots of fun, stay active and try something new. Full support is given, and the club is very welcoming and inclusive

of new players, which is open to any gender as we all mix in and have fun. This runs from 18:00 to 19:00 each Thursday. Why not come and give this a go!! Next season we are looking to grow by running 2 male adult teams, 4 age groups (under 7s to under 10s) and start to develop our women’s team as this is a massive ambition for the club. The rugby club is based at Derby Leisure and Events Venue on Moor Lane, and we are always on the lookout for new players, adults, and children, irrespective of any rugby experience.

5-MILE CIRCULAR WALK FROM HOMESFORD TEA ROOMS, ON THE A6 NEAR WHATSTANDWELL

This month we welcome a new recruit to our walking Pantheon, Say Hello to Bailey (affectionately known as Bailey Boo) who has volunteered his Mum and Dad to re-walk this classic walk. The walk starts and ends at Homesford Tea Rooms at Whatstandwell, which is a fantastic place for a bite to eat. It looks like Bailey and his family had a great time. A lovely walk for you and your dog! This walk is fairly flat and should take around 2-2½ hours to complete. There is a range of terrain, with some muddy, uneven sections, which may be slightly overgrown. There are also a few sections of road, so take plenty of care and make sure you wear appropriate footwear.

START: HOMESTEAD TEA ROOMS A6, WHATSTANDWELL, DE4 5HJ 1.

Standing with your back to the Tea Rooms, turn right along the main road. After passing a 50 MPH sign and just prior to a sign board reading ‘Conservation Crafts’ turn sharp left and back on yourself to join a signposted footpath going gently uphill.

Follow the path with a dry stone wall on either side. After a short distance pass by some houses on your left and then continue straight ahead to enter some woodland. Continue for some distance and then the path bears to the right. Now follow the path with a dry stone wall on either side until reaching a road.

Turn right and continue along the road for a short distance. Then turn left to cross over a stile which is set back a bit into some woodland and continue along a footpath going uphill. After some distance pass through a gap in a stone wall. Ignore the path on your right named Kings Lot path going steep uphill and continue straight ahead for a short distance to cross over a stile.

Continue along the path staying close to the edge of the woodland and keeping a dry stone wall on your left. After some distance cross over another stile and stay close to edge of the woodland with a dry stone wall on your left. Continue for some distance until coming out of the woodland, passing through a large wooden gate and onto a lane.

Turn right along the lane heading uphill. Continue for some distance until passing ‘Yew Tree Cottage’ on your right. Shortly after, the lane splits into two. Take the right fork and then after a very short distance bear right again to pass to the right of a stone carved with the name ‘Watfield Farm’.

Continue steep uphill, pass over a stile and then through a metal gate. Shortly after pass over a third stile and into some woodland.

Continue straight ahead with a wall on your right and eventually pass through a gap. Continue straight ahead for a short distance and then begin to descend sharply. On the way down the hill pass through two more gaps and then into an open field.

Cross the open field, pass through a gap and onto a road. Cross straight over the road and continue straight along a lane sign posted ‘Bridleway’. Continue along the lane for some distance and then pass through a metal gate. Continue straight ahead for some distance and pass through a second metal gate.

Continue straight ahead until reaching a T junction. Turn right and immediately pass through a metal gate. Continue for a short distance and then follow the path around to the left. Continue for some distance until reaching a finger board sign. Bear left and uphill following the sign for ‘High Peak Trail’.

After a short distance ignore the path bearing left and steep uphill and bear slightly right passing by a wooden bench on your right. After a very short distance turn sharp right onto a trail sign posted for ‘High Peak Junction’. Continue for some distance going downhill until passing through a tunnel underneath a road.

After a short distance pass a railway carriage on your right and then continue with a canal on your left. Continue straight ahead until passing ‘The Wharf Shed’ on your left and then after a short distance turn left onto a footpath sign posted for ‘Ambergate’.

12.

Continue straight along a footpath with a canal on your left. Eventually pass over a railway bridge and then continue with the canal on your left for some distance until reaching a tunnel. Just prior to reaching the tunnel turn right onto a footpath sign posted for ‘Homestead Cottage A6’.

13.

Continue through some trees for some distance and then turn right to cross over a river bridge. Continue to pass through a tunnel underneath a railway line and then continue to follow a tarmac lane back to a main road.

14.

Turn right along the main road back to the tea rooms.

WHO WERE THE SUFFRAGETTES? Emmeline Pankhurst

Colours of the suffragette movement. Purple represents loyalty and dignity, white for purity, and green for hope.

Suffragettes were an activist women’s organisation in the early 20th century who, under the banner “Votes for Women”, fought for women’s right to vote in public elections in the United Kingdom. The term refers in particular to members of the British Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), a women-only movement founded in 1903 by Emmeline Pankhurst, which engaged in direct action and civil disobedience. In 1906, a reporter writing in the Daily Mail coined the term suffragette for the WSPU, derived from suffragist (any person advocating for voting rights), in order to belittle the women advocating women’s suffrage. The militants embraced the new name, even adopting it for use as the title of the newspaper published by the WSPU. Women had won the right to vote in several countries by the end of the 19th century; in 1893, New Zealand became the first self-governing country to grant the vote to all women over the age of 21. When by 1903 women in Britain had not been enfranchised, Pankhurst decided that women had to “do the work ourselves”; the WSPU motto became “deeds, not words.” The suffragettes heckled politicians, tried to storm parliament, were attacked and sexually assaulted during battles with the police, chained themselves to railings, smashed windows, carried out a nationwide bombing and arson campaign, and faced anger and ridicule in the media. When imprisoned they went on hunger strike, to which the government responded by force-feeding them. The first suffragette to be force fed was Evaline Hilda Burkitt. The death of one suffragette, Emily Davison, when she ran in front of the King’s horse at the 1913 Epsom Derby, made headlines around the world. The WSPU campaign had varying levels of support from within the suffragette movement; breakaway groups formed, and within the WSPU itself not all members supported the direct action. Hard to imagine they were seen as a ‘terrorist movement’!

They were active in our part of the Midlands – The Workers Dreadnought paper issued on Saturday November 2nd, 1918, records that Sylvia Pankhurst was brought before the Petty Sessional Division in Eckington. It records she caused ‘a mutiny, sedition or disaffection amongst his Majesty’s Forces or amongst the civilian population ‘. The charge arose from a speech given by Pankhurst on 28th September to Cresswell Local Labour Party. She was taken to Renishaw Police Station cells and arrested. She was fined £50 and £8 12s in costs. The suffragette campaign was suspended when World War I broke out in 1914. After the war, the Representation of the People Act 1918 gave the vote to women over the age of 30 who met certain property qualifications. Ten years later, women gained electoral equality with men when the Representation of the People (Equal Franchise) Act 1928 gave all women the right to vote at age 21.

All Around the Shire Recollections of a Simpler Time

During our reminiscence sessions, these are always the items which are guaranteed to produce a grimace and a chorus of “Oooh, I remember using Izal” followed by floods of memories of freezing cold outside privies, newspaper on string and the dreaded slippery toilet paper. In theory, there was a rough side and a smooth side but, either way, it didn’t do the job. Outside toilets could be either shared with other families or one per household. It was my dad’s job, as a small boy, to cut up newspaper into rectangles and hang on a big nail on the door of the outside loo.

Post-war sanitation meant that new houses began to have indoor plumbing fitted as standard and the problem with trying to flush newspaper was that there were continual blockages. Thank goodness for the arrival of soft toilet paper which appeared in our shops in 1942. However, the high cost meant that many homes could not afford the luxury until the 1960s or 70s. Our reliance on soft toilet paper today is evidenced by panic buying at the beginning of lockdown during the recent pandemic.

Kazuo Ishiguro often uses an outsider’s view to look at how human beings live and love. He did it with the unforgettable Never Let Me Go and he’s got it bang to rights again with his latest novel the Klara and the Sun. Klara is an Artificial Friend – an AI created to be a companion for lonely children. Which means she has to learn first-hand what motivates humans, how they behave towards each other and what their faults and joys are. The Sun powers Klara, but is also a God-like figure with the power to change lives. This probably sounds like a sci-fi approach – and in a way it is. But it asks questions about how our species is going to deal with the new inventions and systems we are creating. But that’s only part of the story. Ishiguro has previously won the Nobel Prize for Literature and the Booker and this book returns again to his ongoing exploration of what it means to exist as people with emotions thoughts and memories. Given all that - which sounds very serious - it’s quite entrancing, very engaging and a really easy read. And it stays with you long after you have finished reading it. For this reader always one of the marks of a good book.

The Peak District and Derbyshire are famed for their wildflower meadows – although traditional hay meadows took a bad knock during the 1970s and 1980s with around 95% destroyed by intensive farming. Nevertheless, in recent decades there has been a gradual but perhaps accelerating recovery in many areas. There are newly created sites on restoration areas but also farming grassland, which in the era of reduced fertilisers is beginning to recover. The first signs are generally the emergence of fields of tall, golden meadow buttercups and followed by swathes of oxeye daisies. Orchids may follow along with other less common flowers. A great place to see this is on the National Trust estate at Longshaw and close by the Grouse Inn at Froggatt. Over the last few years these have developed into glorious flower meadows and full of birds, bees, and butterflies too. We even had curlews breeding there a few years back and in the evenings a barn owl’s ghostly appearance is not unusual. The types and variety of wildflowers in a meadow depends on various key factors, but mainly soil conditions and then the timing and intensity of management. Ideally a traditional meadow is cut in early spring and then left to grow and flower through the summer. It is then cut as ‘the sward’ in mid to late summer and then grazed to remove the ‘aftermath’. This is the way such areas were managed across Britain and much of Europe for centuries. These are ‘eco-cultural’ features mixing nature and people’s management in an intimate process though the annual pattern of the seasons. The result of management and of low input of nutrients (i.e. no application of artificial fertilisers) perhaps

restricted to the spreading of ‘muck’ each year. During the summertime the flowers have chance to grow to maturity, bloom, and set seed, and are then harvested as hay. For livestock be it cattle or horses, such hay is tastier, richer, and more nutritious that say ryegrass hay which is bulky but problematic because its quality is low. Interestingly too, the meadow plants are powered by networks of underground fungi called ‘mycorrhizas’ which form an invisible network interconnecting plants roots and enabling nutrients and water to be shared throughout the community. Soil conditions include the amount of organic matter from decomposing plant material, associated nutrient, but also water. Wet meadows have a particularly distinctive and rich flora with wonderful fragrant flowers such as meadowsweet, common fleabane, purple loosestrife, marsh marigold, and in spring, lady’s smock. Scarlet pimpernel appears and then disappears where there is a little disturbance – maybe a tractor rut or a molehill. On drier sites and where there is less grazing then meadow cranesbill thrives; a marker increasingly of meadow communities along roadside verges. Butterflies thrive in the meadows with common blue favouring areas with bird’s-foot trefoil and other members of the pea family. However, the annual hay-cut can be an ecological shock-wave and so insects like butterflies also need the uncut edges and corners, and rough areas alongside hedgerows. Enjoy the marvellous meadows from late spring to the end of summer.
