From the Editor Dear Readers, Well, it’s all doom and gloom at the moment, isn’t it? Except the weather (at the time of writing at least!) A summer of discontent, a cost-of-living crisis, war in Europe and a rumbling pandemic that just won’t go away. It’s starting to feel like we’re on season 2 of the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”! (I’m claiming the rights on that one Netflix & I need a big budget to hire 1 of the Hemsworth’s please!). Our time to do something about this will come if you want to but for now, if you’re anything like me, my time is preoccupied with just trying to balance the books and effectively stand still. Sad times at the minute. Onto far more cheerful things though. I hope you all love our bright and beautiful front covers this month. Our team spend a lot of time coming up with creative ideas, working with our sister company, Artliff Design and Print. And this month is a cracker in my opinion. If you haven’t figured it out, to celebrate World Emoji Day (more on that on page 7) we have created an emoji for all of the people who work on the mags. My Emoji is obviously the one with the stunning shoes and is shrugging her shoulders and rolling her eyes as I try to figure out how to keep everyone facing forwards… (I am known for being a bit of an eye roller!) Each of the Emoji’s reflects the personalities of the team and as you can see we’re quite an eclectic bunch! It was great fun doing them so, as a giggle, why don’t you have a think about what your own emoji would look like. If

you’re really creative you could even draw it. We’d love to see them! I ended last month on a cliff hanger (not really, but I do like to big up my part sometimes!) with the crutches for the wedding. Needless to say, despite my protestations, the cousins would not delay the wedding for me (rude!), so I crammed my trotter into a beautiful shoe (of course!) and hobbled down the aisle with a massive wincing grin – job done! And in true Cinders style, once I landed at the reception, I whipped the shoes off and donned some slippers for the rest of the evening. Staying classy to the end! Next month, I’ll tell you all about my camping experience with the team…..at Ynot festival….. eeek! Who’s joining us! See you next month,

Smile it’s Emoji Time! Emojis - love ‘em, loathe ‘em, use them or not; I would imagine that most of us know what they are by now. Do you know how long they’ve been around for though? It’s perhaps longer than you may think… Not unsurprisingly, emojis first surfaced in Japan. Japanese has a pictorial based written language (like Chinese) and the word “emoji” itself actually derives from three Japanese characters (or kanji). (“e,” picture, 文 (“mo,” write) and 字 (“ji,” character). The first set of emojis were developed in Japan in 1997 for a mobile phone named the SkyWalker DP-211SW. There were 90 designs, including ones we would recognise today, “thumbs up”, for example, but they were basic. 1999 saw the development of symbols that were more pictorial for use on another Japanese mobile phone service. This set of 176 emojis kickstarted the widespread use of emojis. Their creator Shigetaka Kurita had only 144 pixels in which to design the emojis, meaning they look clunky and awkward when compared with the ones we see today.

Today people use emojis constantly; in fact, you could (if you were so inclined) probably create an entire sentence using the images. There’s even a TV show which features a game where emojis are used to describe TV shows, films and books; contestants have to guess the answer based on a set of emojis created by one of the other players. The accuracy of the emoji use varies tremendously though - it seems one person’s translation can be very different to another’s! It’s funny, isn’t it? The world’s first written languages were highly pictorial - think Egyptian Hieroglyphs, Archaic Chinese, Linear B (Mycenaean Greek), Linear A (Minoan Crete) and the Cuneiform scripts of the Sumerians; it appears we are coming full circle!

MSN messenger, the online computer based messaging program (anyone remember that?) created 30 “emoticons” for use on the platform in 2003. But emoji use on phones was mainly confined to Japan until 2010, when emojis were incorporated into Unicode (an international encoding system which gives every letter, digit or symbol a unique numeric value across different programs and platforms - basically, it means that just about every language can be assigned and identified using the system). 722 emojis for both iPhones and Android phones were released that year. There are now close to 3,000 emojis listed in the official Unicode list and even an online Emojipedia (created in 2013). The creator of this reference website also established World Emoji Day, held on July 17th each year (www.worldemojiday.com).

@ The Watchorn Restaurant at The Abraham Lincoln Library Voice Magazines were invited for lunch at The Watchorn Restaurant at Abraham Library Restaurant, Alfreton (DE55 7AQ) this month. This beautiful historic building is now open to the public, serving lunches on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 11am- 3pm. The Watchorn Restaurant has ramp access making the restaurant wheelchair friendly. It boasts a lovely outside seating area for those sunny days and has a spacious car park directly opposite. We were met with such a welcoming atmosphere with a menu choice for everyone. All the staff were wonderfully attentive and they held a well-stocked bar! (unfortunately, being on a work lunch with the boss means it was soft drinks only for the Voice team! Sad times!). The food served is all homecooked to order, there are hot and cold food choices offering vegetarian and vegan options. There is something for every palate whether you were wanting a light lunch or a full meal, they have plenty of choice on offer. Voice Meals Emily and Jude each enjoyed a traditional Cottage Pie, served with carrots, peas, Yorkshire puddings and jug of gravy. Liam and Danielle both opted for the crispy fresh Scampi, served with triple cooked chips, a choice of peas or dressed side salad and tartar sauce on the side. Michelle had a warm Sweet Chilli Chicken Wrap packed full of filling, served with triple cooked chips, and dressed salad.

THE WATCHORN RESTAURANT DERBY RD, ALFRETON, DE77 7AQ Lisa’s choice was Lasagne served with triple cooked chips, dressed salad and garlic bread. As most of you might already know, the Voice team all seem to have a bit of a sweet tooth and the dessert menu soon caught our eyes. After the usual debate – Do we have room? Should we really be eating more food? Will we still be productive this afternoon after all this lovely food? The answers were a swift YES YES YES to all and our desserts were ordered and on their way. All desserts were served with pouring cream, accompanied by fresh strawberries and raspberries as a side garnish. • Carrot Cake • Red Velvet Cheesecake • Black Forest Gateau • Warm Chocolate Fudge Cake • Lemon Meringue Pie • Profiteroles All our staff went back to work in the afternoon with a contented smile and full bellies, we all really enjoyed our food and the trip out and, of course, we were still really productive that afternoon, honest!!!!!

Sarah and Hayleigh both selected the Fish and triple cooked chips. This came with either garden or mushy peas (Hayleigh and Sarah went with mushy peas) all served with granary bread & butter and tartar sauce on the side.

ALFRETON MALE VOICE CHOIR Alfreton Male Voice Choir has been pleased to honour the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and, along with the rest of the nation, send their good wishes for the future. On Thursday 2nd June, Alfreton Town Council marked the occasion with the lighting of a Beacon at the new Alfreton Park Special School. The evening began with the opportunity to tour this most impressively serviced facility, followed by the choir performance in the main hall. Following this, we all went outside where the beacon was lit by John Walker and Chris Nieper to a rousing chorus of God Save the Queen. On Sunday 5th June we were at South Wingfield Social Club rounding off their 3 days of Jubilee celebrations; to an enthusiastic audience we began, and ended, with the National Anthem and in between sang a varied programme, John recited some agricultural themed monologues and Mick, as usual, added some laughs. Chairman Mick said ‘’It has been a privilege to be involved in the celebrations in recognition of the Queen’s 70 years of service and we look forward to many years to come. The Queen brought the country together, song unites the community and Thursdays unite the choir. 3-MILE CIRCULAR WALK FROM HOMESFORD TEA ROOMS, ON THE A6 NEAR WHATSTANDWELL

Bailey Boo is back again, and back again at his new haunt, with another walk that departs from Homesford Tea Rooms. This is a nice short walk, which is often handy in these summer months as we try and keep our doggy’s cool in the warm weather. Bailey loved this walk as did his Mum and Dad, not least because of the opportunity for a coffee and cake at Lauretta’s! A nice short but fun packed walk for you and your dog! There are some uphill sections on this walk so should it take around 1½ hours to complete. There is a range of terrain, which can be muddy and uneven and some sections may be somewhat overgrown due to the time of year. There are also a few sections of road, so take plenty of care, make sure you wear appropriate footwear and as always, follow the countryside code.

START: HOMESFORD TEA ROOMS A6, WHATSTANDWELL, DE4 5HJ 1.

Standing, facing the road, with your back to the tea rooms turn left and continue along the main road. After a short distance turn left, pass by a metal gate to continue downhill along a tarmac lane and signposted footpath.

At the bottom of the hill follow the lane around to the left and pass underneath a railway bridge. Immediately after the bridge keep to the right and follow a footpath to climb some steps and cross over a river bridge.

Immediately after the river bridge turn left to follow the footpath and continue until reaching a T junction of paths. Take the first right, heading uphill along the footpath signposted for ‘Holloway’. After a very short distance turn left along a footpath taking you initially up a short sharp incline, then past a signpost reading ‘nature reserve’ and then passing over the canal.

Continue along this path passing through woodland for quite some distance and then eventually pass by a Number ‘5’ marker post on your right. Continue straight ahead until reaching a clearing in the trees.

Follow the footpath twisting and winding through the clearing and then pass a stone bench seat on your right just before passing back into some trees. After passing back into the trees, ignore the first path on your right and then at a fork in the path take the right split heading gently uphill.

Continue straight ahead for some distance and then pass a number ‘9’ marker post on your left. Continue straight ahead until passing through a wooden gate. Now continue straight ahead with a stone wall on your right. After some distance pass through a tall metal swing gate and now continue with a fence on both sides.

Continue until reaching another tall metal swing gate. Pass through the gate and after a very short distance at a T junction of paths turn right. Continue along the path and then after a short distance pass over a stone stile.

Immediately after the stile continue along a well laid lane to cross an open field. At the far side of the field pass through two gaps in a stone wall and onto a road. Turn right along the road heading uphill and then after a short distance take the first road on the right heading downhill signposted for ‘Whatstandwell’.

Continue downhill until the road bends around to the left. At this point, and immediately after passing ‘Bracken Cottage’ on the right turn right along a signposted footpath. Continue with a hedge on your right and a fence on your left. After a short distance pass through a gap in a wall and then turn left to pass through a tall metal swing gate into a field.

Continue downhill with a stone wall on your left and then pass a cottage on your left. Continue to the bottom of the field and pass through a tall metal swing gate and onto a T junction of footpaths. Turn right along a footpath signposted for ‘Cromsford’.

After a short distance turn left onto a footpath signposted for ‘Homesford’. Continue along this path crossing over a river bridge and then underneath a railway bridge. Follow the tarmac lane back to the main road and then turn right along the road back to the tea rooms.

However, pooch hair care crucial – not just to keep your dog looking good, but also to ensure they’re in good health. Dogs, like humans, feel better when they are clean and healthy! The longer days and warm weather inspire us to get ourselves and our dogs outside to soak up some sun. Grooming dogs in the summer can help reduce the heat and make your dog a little more comfortable. Regularly Brush Your Dogs: It’s important to remember that dogs have a natural cooling system so shaving it all off isn’t always necessary, all dogs benefit from a good brushing, and you don’t have to be a pro to do that. It may be tempting to shave off all that thick hair for the summer, but don’t do it – unless they’re a breed that gets clipped regularly! Dogs use their coats as natural weather control and don’t benefit from being completely shaved down. In fact, this can be uncomfortable and lead to skin problems since your dog’s skin isn’t meant to be exposed to that level of sun. Instead, focus on brushing your dog to remove thick winter undercoat, this will also prevent excess shedding and remove objects which often find their way into your dog’s coat while playing outdoors.

Nail Care Is Essential: As dogs like to play outside in the summer, they may break their paw nails if they’re not properly trimmed. Don’t cut the nails more than required, cut from the tip where the nail begins and trim regularly to keep the nails short. Increase Bathing Consider increasing baths to ensure your dog’s coat stays as sleek and well-groomed as possible. Additional baths will also help reduce parasites. Apply flea or tick repellent after the bath, many brands wash off in the bathtub. Avoid Heatstroke If you are concerned about your dog’s heat, avoid exercise or too much time spent in the yard during the peak of the heat. Provide plenty of shade and maybe even a wading pool for your dog. Alfreton Cricket Club Good Start to Premier League Cricket It hasn’t been a bad return to the dizzying heights of Premier League Cricket for Alfreton Cricket Club. The 1st XI, in their return to topflight action since 2014, have defeated rivals Marehay Cricket Club and also upset premier league stalwarts in Denby and Spondon and find themselves firmly in mid-table. The impressive Muhammed Zaroob continues to be explosive with both bat and ball, averaging 60 after 7 games with the bat and taking 10 wickets at 24 a piece with the red cherry. A highlight included a brutal 157 against one of the best bowling attacks in Derbyshire in Sandiacre Town, who are also reigning premier league champions. No small feat indeed! The evergreen Graham Hibbert currently heads up our bowling charts for the first team, having taken 11 wickets at 34 a piece. The first team have also been bolstered by the return of quick bowler, Elliott Bowles, after a hiatus at Langley Mill and Matt New’s broken finger has healed. Let’s hope for an even better July! It has been tougher elsewhere in senior cricket within the club. Callum Spencer’s 2nd XI are currently in the relegation zone of division 4N but are hopeful of improved performances going forward with football finishing and players returning from injury. Spencer himself has taken the most wickets at 9 despite his injury problems, while

Tom Pawelski continues to pick up runs at an impressive average of 55. The 3rds have had a troubling time but an influx of new players has helped the team out of trouble when at one time it looked like they may have to fold. It is great to see local people supporting their local sports club and getting involved. Junior cricket is also in full swing. It’s always great to see that so many youngsters, from 5 years all the way up to 15 years old, competing on the Asha Oval in Alfreton Park. The vast majority of our current players for our senior teams came through the ranks at the club, including the first team captain. As always, we are on the lookout for new people to join the club, whether that be a junior, supporting the club, watching the club, or playing for the club. SELF-CARE FOR BUBBLE BATH HATERS

Is it just me? Am I the only woman who flinches at the mention of a spa day or a Prosecco fuelled bubble bath? I’m a hugger so it’s not the idea of being touched that bothers me. Although, I have to say, that being pummelled, wiped, exfoliated, and generally messed about with holds pretty much zero appeal to me. I just get so BORED. Loafing around doing nothing (and being done to) is just not for me. I don’t want to mislead you into imagining that I’m physically constantly on the go, but mentally, my happy productive place is to have many ‘tabs’ open, just like my computer. Often, that means juggling an open phone, iPad, good old fashioned notebook and a pen at the same time. Which is tricky if you’re covered in some mystic oil and balancing remnants from Stonehenge between your shoulder blades! And yet, I get the self-care mantra thing that surrounds us; so many of the clients coming to me for support are burned out and worn down by stresses, responsibilities and caring for others. None of us are exempt from the need to take care of ourselves, but when did it become the accepted wisdom that we have to halt everyday life and take time out to be engaging in self-care? If we are genuinely looking after ourselves to be as well as we can and be fit enough to manage the responsibilities of the people and tasks in our lives, that is not a switch to turn off and on. Selfcare, at a fundamental level, looks like listening to our bodies…. eating well and eating well every day, not just when we want to drop some pounds.

Recognising if we’ve fallen into destructive habits of misusing alcohol to escape from the day… being proactive about getting better sleep (if we’re constantly complaining about being tired). It’s also about recognising what gives you energy and brings you joy or satisfaction. I’ve often written on this page about Personality Profiling (get yours free at www.16personalities.com) that can confirm whether you get your energy from being alone or being with others. Being an Introvert, or an Extravert has nothing to do with whether you are sociable or not, it’s about what charges your batteries. If you are an Introvert by nature, you will naturally be drawn to solitary hobbies like fishing or painting, whist the Extraverts among us will feel refreshed by engaging in activities with others, like Zumba or a walking group. Self-care is being aware of this and letting it influence your decisions. So, when faced with an invitation to lunch with a group of friends, the Extravert knows that this is what selfcare looks like for them, whilst an Introvert may still go to lunch, but can be aware that they’ll need some time alone afterwards to recharge. Aside from that, it’s horses for courses in terms of lifestyle: a busy working parent who never gets a minute to themselves will probably love the gift of a massage (unless they’re like me!), whereas someone with a more solitary life might prefer your company over a cup of coffee. Don’t get me wrong, if your idea of a good time is a bubble bath, go for it! Here’s to looking after ourselves EVERYDAY.

Rolls-Royce Rugby Club

During the summer months, Rolls-Royce Rugby club are busy preparing for the new season which will start in September. Preseason training will start prior to September for the Adults, and this will be announced soon. To prepare for the new season, the club held its Annual General meeting, where new committee volunteers are selected to take the club forward. This saw some long-standing volunteers take a break and new members come into the fold, to bring new ideas and fresh direction into the club. To close the season, the club hosted the annual Elliot 7s tournament which is a social rugby tournament. 8 teams battled it out for the trophy which was eventually won by Baker’s Dozen. Due to the season coming to an end, the club is now offering a fun fitness and touch rugby taster session each Thursday evening

through the summer months for new players to come and experience rugby without taking it too seriously. This is a great opportunity to meet new people, have lots of fun, stay active and try something new. Full support is given, and the club is very welcoming and inclusive of new players, which is open to any gender as we all mix in and have fun. This runs from 18:00 to 19:00 each Thursday. Why not come and give this a go!! Next season we are looking to grow by running 2 male adult’s teams, 5 age groups (under 7s to under 11s) and start to develop our women’s team as this is a massive ambition for the club. The rugby club is based at Derby Leisure and Events Venue on Moor Lane, and we are always on the lookout for new players, adults, and children, irrespective of any rugby experience. All Around the Shire Recollections of A Simpler Time

When I was a girl, the annual holiday was an important event. I didn’t know anyone who went abroad. The destinations were usually Mablethorpe or “Skeggie” and dates were always during ‘factory fortnight’. My parents, grandparents, brothers, and I stayed in a guest house where the whole of the town and beach could be accessed on foot. I remember the weather being usually sunny and windy although on the rainy days, you had a good time whether you liked it or not!

Pride for All It’s hard to believe that homosexuality was still considered a crime in the UK right up until 1967 when it was decriminalised…or so the story goes. Yet a closer look at the laws relating to homosexual relationships shows that 1967 was only the start. It is estimated that 15,000-plus gay men were convicted in the decades that followed the 1967 liberalisation, and the age of consent was only reduced to 16, the same as for heterosexuals, in 2001. It took Northern Ireland a further 8 years to catch up. The last remaining laws relating to gay sex were not repealed (in England and Wales) until 2003, when “the gross indecency law” passed in 1885, and the criminalisation of sodomy were finally wiped from the legal pantheon. The gross indecency law was the one used to convict Alan Turing (the man who helped crack the German Enigma Code in WW2) and was the reason the playwright Oscar Wilde was jailed in 1895. Northern Ireland did not repeal the sodomy law until 2008 and Scotland not until 2013 - meaning that gay sex did not cease to be a criminal act in the UK as an entirety until a mere 9 years ago! In the face of such inequality, it’s hardly surprising that gay men and the wider LGBTQ community have felt the need to celebrate their identities, and nowhere is this better expressed than in the various Pride marches that take place around the country. Of course, the LGBTQ community is not comprised simply of gay men; lesbian women, bisexual people and transgender individuals also stand up for their rights to love anyone they like without fear of persecution. If you’ve never witnessed a Pride march, I recommend you find one and go along - no need to march with the participants, just be a part of the crowd and enjoy the spectacle. Whilst still advocating

for LGBTQ rights, the marches are an explosion of colour and joy and a celebration of diversity. Pride events: •

If you ever needed proof of the valuable service that your Voice Magazine brings to the community, I have it. You’ll recall that last month I introduced you to George’s wife, Gill, a former teacher. Within days of the last edition being distributed, I received a number of emails from local people who were convinced that I was referring to someone who had taught them. I was able to confirm that she was – sorry, but ‘data protection’ forbids me from being more specific – and in every case, they had fond memories of ‘Miss’. Many of the youngsters that Gill had taught in a career, beginning in 1971, were now grandparents themselves, and in some cases, their own offspring had gone on to benefit from her teaching. As a result of this development, a WhatsApp and Facebook group has been created – who’d have predicted that back in 1971? – and former teacher and pupils are now in regular contact, and happily reminiscing on ‘the happiest days of their lives’. Remembering that these were 7/8 year old pupils attending a Roman Catholic primary school and living in more innocent times, here are some of Bridget’s memories

“My Mum’s a Prostitute!”. Although I didn’t fully appreciate the reasons, until a little older, I’ll never forget the look on your face.

There was the time when Michael, who at seven years of age I was convinced I’d end up marrying – I got out of jail there as he turned out to be a bit of a wrong’un – put up his hand and asked “Miss, can I go to the toilet?”. You replied something like “OK Michael, but what’s the magic word?”. We all laughed, even you, as looking unsure, he replied, “Abracadabra?”

We used to have school dinners in the hall, with the older pupils going in first as they required minimum supervision and were better able to help themselves. In your class, we were about the middle group to join the queue. On one particular day, we passed a large crate of apples on the counter before moving down to collect whatever hot food was on offer. The lady supervisor had written a note saying ‘Please take one, but only ONE, as God is watching.’ Being good boys and girls in your class, we did as we were told of course, and just took the one. However, when we got to the end and saw that that day’s choice of sweet was an individual chocolate mousse, one of the older boys (don’t think it would have been a girl as we were too well behaved) had scribbled a note saying “Take as many as you like. God’s watching the apples!”

In the Ancient Woods Derbyshire and the Peak District are justifiably wellknown for their rich ancient woodlands dominated by carpets of bluebells in the spring and early summer. These irreplaceable habitats retain their unique attraction throughout the year as seasons blend and morph and the magic of the ancient woods continues to change in tune with the annual cycle. These wonderful places resulted from the ‘enclosure’ of trees from the once widespread wood pastures of ‘wooded commons’ around a thousand years ago. The enclosed woods were protected from grazing animals so that trees cut down routinely to be re-grown as ‘coppice’ were not damaged. Along with the tall timber trees these coppices or springs produced the important economic outputs from the carefully managed woods – fuelwood and charcoal. Indeed, these woodlands were a mainstay of the local community and especially of the metal smelting and working industries from the early medieval times through until the nineteenth century. Once busy working woods full of woodmen and their families, charcoalmen, tan-bark peelers, and other workers such as the ubiquitous sawyers, these places are now quiet havens for wildlife or else increasingly they are countryside were people recreate in numbers; once working woods now leisurely landscapes. Nevertheless, if you walk quietly through the woods, pausing now and then to take in the unique atmosphere and perhaps to listen to the drone of insects or the song of the woodland birds, think about the people who went before you. Generations of wood workers have left their marks in the landscape and you can find their charcoal hearths, the remains of their coppiced

trees, and perhaps the circles on the woodland floor where their wigwam homes once stood. Go quietly and softly through the ancient woods and you tread in the footsteps of the ghosts of generations who lived and worked there over countless centuries. Yet often in the hurly burly of modern living we fail to see, hear, or touch this remarkable heritage of our ancestry even when it is all around us. The wildflowers of the ancient woods reflect the history of people in these special places. The bluebell, the wood anemone, the wild garlic and more are there in part at least because of how the woods were once worked. Each manor or parish would have its wood or woods and these were vital for everyday subsistence and survival. Today we value these places as green lungs and for the benefits they bring to our health and wellbeing; in the past the wood-fuel they provided was essential for many poorer people during the long, cold, dark winter months in the Peaks. We are separated from much of the necessity for survival of the woods, and despite this they still provide health and wellbeing, biodiversity, moderation of the excesses of climate change, and even protection from flood-risk. Mostly these are things we take for granted whereas our ancestors valued and protected their woods and trees as essential resources to be protected and nurtured. When things went wrong such as when woods around Matlock were exhausted by industrial exploitation, then this became a serious problem. Professor Ian D. July is blissful in the garden, full of brilliant smells and abundance. But there are some things you can do, in addition to sitting and admiring all your earlier hard work.

I know this column sounds like a broken record with the “deadhead” mantra, but it’s all about making the most of what you have got. The aim of deadheading is to produce more and better flowers. With roses, unless you want to produce hips later in the year, just snap the flower head off below the bud once it’s finished – it comes away very easily. This means the buds just behind have more room to grow. But once you’ve gone beyond the original flourish of buds, cut back a few inches to just above a lower leaf joint which will prompt the rose to put out more buds faster. When foxgloves and delphiniums have gone over, deadhead the flowering spike – don’t take the whole stem as there may be a cluster of buds either just below the spike or further down the plant which will flower subsequently. With plants where the first flush of flowers has gone completely, for instance early perennials such as poppies, cut back to ground level after flowering to produce more strong foliage and perhaps blooms. And perennial geraniums will produce more foliage and possibly flowers later in the season if you take the shears to them below existing foliage, leaving just the stems. You can pinch out the main shoots of cosmos and fuchsias to create bushier plants – again more flowers, - though it can be a bit heart-breaking to take
