FOOD & RETAIL HOPE VALLEY RUGBY CLUB

RIVALRY RENEWED

Games against local rivals Bakewell Mannerians RFC used to be a staple of Valley’s calendar. However, the advent of league rugby sadly saw the two clubs moving in opposite directions. That was rectified when Bakewell made their first visit to Hope Sports Club. On a perfect day for rugby, watching, if not playing, both teams showed signs of early season “rust”, but produced an entertaining game for the spectators. Slightly against the run of play Valley’s stand-in captain Jake Oldridge opened the scoring, but it didn’t take long for the visitors to hit back, and they led 7-19 going into the final quarter. An opportunist try from Oldridge gave Valley hope, but it was all to no avail as Bakewell scored a breakaway try as time expired to secure a win (14-26) in a game that provided both clubs with much needed pre-season practice.

AND ON TO THE SERIOUS STUFF

Valley will open their competitive season with one of the biggest games in the club’s history when they travel to Nottingham RFC to face Amber Valley in the delayed final of the NLD Vase (27th August). Their league campaign in NOWIRUL Division 3 South, following last season’s league title, begins with two home games against Macclesfield (3rd Sept) and Wirral (10th Sept) - both games will be played at Hope Sports Club (kick off 1500hrs).

ON THE RUN

One of Valley’s squad, Dom Hunter, and his partner, Phoebe Pembleton, will be taking part in the Great North Run on 11th September in aid of the mental health charity, MIND. Those that know Dom know that he is not built like a typical long distance runner so this effort is all the more commendable.

The Club will be offering their full support and you can to by donating on his JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/Dominic-Hunter1.
