LEABROOKS ALLOTMENT SHOP

The allotment is now bustling with people and activity, despite a slow and cold start to the season.

Whilst the price of fruit and veg continues to rise, we will be providing good quality produce at our fruit and veg stall, which opens on a Saturday morning from 10am-1pm from the end of June each season. Keep an eye on our Facebook page Leabrooks Allotment-shop, for updates and further details.

Our allotment community provides the stall with excess seasonal produce and we enjoy sharing this with our customers. The range of produce varies each week but our customers have commented how great it all tastes. For some people, it’s just about trying fruit and veg that you cannot purchase in supermarkets whilst for others, it’s more about buying local food and getting good value for money. We pick the produce as we arrive on-site on Saturday mornings and we restock as the morning progresses.

Here is a sample of what we grow over the seasons.

Vegetables - peas, beans, squashes, salad, tomatoes, chilies, courgettes, onions, a range of potatoes, cabbage, broccoli, beetroot, and carrots.

Fruit - strawberries, raspberries, melons, apples, damsons, gooseberries, blackberries, rhubarb.

We have a range of growing spaces on site, including greenhouses and polytunnels which allow us to grow a more exotic range of crops. These environments help us lengthen the season and keep some of the more delicate crops, sheltered from the unpredictable Derbyshire weather!

There’s always time for a natter at the stall, and recipe ideas are frequently shared. We have honey for sale from our own beehives, and a range of jams and chutneys. As the season progresses, we also sell bunches of flowers, which always sell quickly.

Some people arrive with shopping lists but more often, end up going home with a bag full of things that have tempted them. As humans, we are creatures of habit, and we quickly become fixed on our food choices. If we are to become more sustainable, we need to become more flexible about the food we eat, as the climate continues to change and challenge us.

The shop also opens to sell a range of pumpkins and squash around Halloween time. This one is always popular with big and little children alike. We are also pleased to introduce people to some of the culinary varieties.

We aim to be as sustainable as possible and encourage our customers to bring their own bags and boxes. Pop along and pick up some tasty treats.
