Hello friends, If you’ve been around The Art Center for any length of time, or if you’ve read my director’s letters in Art Matters, you’re probably familiar with The Art Center Guild. I talk about the Guild a lot, and for good reason. The group is made up of some of my favorite people, and they are in invaluable and indispensable part of what makes The Art Center such an amazing place. The Art Center Guild has been around for a long, long time. In fact, the group has been around almost as long as The Art Center, and The Art Center is in its 68th year! The group that is now known as The Art Center Guild was originally called ACES, which stood for Art Center Energy Source. And, though they no longer identify as the ACES, they are most assuredly a vast source of energy for The Art Center! The Guild is a volunteer group whose purpose is to support The Art Center in a variety of ways. They provide food for First Fridays and The Annual Benefit and auction, sell baked goods and hand-sewn treasures during the Art and Craft Fair (as well as cater lunches from the kitchen during the fair); they organize, promote, and staff the annual Music in the Grapevines concert series; they volunteer during Spring Art Week and Art Camps, and so much more. On top of all of that, the money they raise during their various sales, and from the concert series, benefits The Art Center in the form of donations throughout the year to help The Art Center cover various costs from general operating to helping to pay for specific exhibitions throughout the year. Of course, the pandemic has created a bit of a speed bump for The Guild, as it has for everyone else. Even so, they have made donations to The Art Center to help us during this difficult time, and they’ve been working and planning for future events! Here are just a few things to look forward to in the coming months: May 1: An indoor art, antique, and treasures sale. (Contact The Art Center for information about types of donations being accepted). This summer: The return of the Music in the Grapevines Concert Series. These concerts are always the highlight of the month. The Guild is still in the planning process for this year’s concerts. Dates, bands, and and safety protocols will be announced soon! September 25: Paint the Town – the Great Heist, an Art Center Benefit. Our annual benefit and auction will be held in September this year, due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Art Center Guild will be providing amazing food for the benefit, and always volunteers in other ways, as well. November 19 & 20: The Annual Art and Craft Fair. The Guild bakes and sells amazing cookies, cakes, and other goodies during the fair. They also sell a variety of hand-sewn treasures. AND they sell meals for shoppers and vendors out of our catering kitchen. We, as a staff, LOVE The Guild, and I just don’t know what we’d do without them. If you’re a Guild member, THANK YOU! If you’re not, you might consider joining the Guild. During “normal” times, they have a formal meeting once a month, and volunteer for different events all year long. For more information about joining this amazing group of Art Center supporters, please email Cathy Zippert at cathyzippert@yahoo.com or call The Art Center at (970) 243-7337 ext. 2. and ask for information about The Art Center Guild! Rockies West National 2021 Juror David Smith March 6 – April 9 This exhibition is one of the most competitive national exhibits for watercolor in the region. The Western Colorado Watercolor Society was formed in 1989 and had their first national exhibition in 1991. In the 29 years of this exhibition, the watercolor society has become a staple in the community for providing opportunity and national exposure to some of the best artists in the region. They host workshops and provide top-notch jurors for all of their exhibitions.

This year’s juror, David Smith, focuses on the fresh application of paint and dynamic lighting conditions. He uses a broad array of techniques which include spattering, spraying, pouring, and working wet into wet to provide texture and fluidity to the work. Accompanying the exhibition, David will be giving an online workshop focusing on revealing the natural white of the paper and using unique tools to produce implied lines and add to the atmosphere of the painting. For more information visit the Western Colorado Watercolor Society website, wcwsociety.net.

MIXING IT UP

LANDSCAPES REIMAGINED Featuring works from The Art Center’s Permanent Collection Juror Gayle Gerson March 6 – April 9 Mixed media art describes a visual art form that combines a variety of media in a single artwork. Mixed media artists choose to work with this variety of materials because it allows them to stretch the boundaries of their creativity. Although mixing charcoal, ink, and pigments was commonplace among the Old Masters and manuscript illuminators of yore, mixed media as a recognized art form came into its own in the early 20th century when Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque (and later the Dadaists) began to push the envelope of what art could be made from and decided it could be made from anything—even envelopes! Gayle Gerson examined pieces from our Permanent Collection that demonstrate this art form and decided that many of them have a landscape quality, hence the title of the exhibit, Landscapes Reimagined. She has added pieces she has created in response to the collection and has asked members of the Permanent Collection Committee who work in mixed media to contribute as well, making for a thought-provoking and very well mixed art exhibit.

Gayle Gerson has been teaching Mixed Media Art classes at The Art Center for over a decade. She has made the art museums of the world her study halls and loves to talk, teach, and think about art. She especially enjoys the medium of collage because it allows her to use the stuff of everyday life in the form the paper scraps, advertising, text, and ephemera to embed evidence of our culture directly into the art pieces she creates. She considers herself an experimental artist and in her studio is always asking the question, “What will happen if I do this?”

Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, and the National Collage Society. She is also a founding member of the Rocky Mountain Collage Society. Her work has been in many national juried shows and featured in Kolaj Magazine, Watercolor Artist, GV Magazine, Incite-The Best of Mixed Media and on the cover of the UNESCO World Heritage Forest Report for 2011. She shows her work in many venues nationwide and maintains a studio in Grand Junction, Colorado. Her art is in many private and public collections.

CMU Juried Student Show Juror Roger McCoy March 6 – April 7 As John Singer Sargent said, “The thicker you paint, the more it flows.” This is like creativity for these young artists. The more they produce art the more it flows, becoming an inborn attribute. After enough time, students cease to be makers of art and become artists. The Colorado Mesa University Annual Juried Student Exhibition gives CMU students the opportunity to exhibit their work, some for the first time, and gives viewers a glimpse at the artwork produced by the next generation of fine artists.

The exhibition features a wide array of mediums such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, graphic design, film, photography, animation and mixed media. Students are guided by a dedicated group of faculty and staff as they gain an education in the Art & Design program focusing on techniques, critical thinking, and experimentation through art.

Spring Registration Opens Tuesday, February 23, at 9am Slight Tuition Increase You may notice a slight increase in tuitions this session. Adult art class tuitions have been raised by $7 per nine-week session. In order to meet social distancing and safety requirements, class sizes have been drastically reduced since we re-opened in June. However, the cost of offering classes (instructor fees, utilities, equipment, etc.) have stayed the same. This small tuition increase will help offset a little bit of that shortfall.
