Letter from the Director On behalf of CONTEXT and the Art Miami LLC team, it is with great pleasure we present and welcome you to the 3rd edition of CONTEXT Art Miami. CONTEXT continues its success by expanding and redesigning the fair in a new location in Midtown Miami, just a few steps south of Art Miami. The 2014 edition also marks my inaugural curatorial effort as director of the Fair, and it has been an incredible journey with much support along the way. First and foremost, this edition would not have been possible without the great energy and trust of the 78 international galleries participating, and more than 360 artists from 27 countries presenting the most promising contemporary cutting-edge work from around the globe to Miami Art Week. Throughout the process, many new art works were created specifically for the fair, featuring a series of solo artist exhibitions, curatorial and special projects, as well as talks and music-DJ performances. The support of my colleagues at Art Miami, along with the curators and exhibitors, have made all of this possible. So please be sure to attend these special programs, and take the time to engage - see, hear and explore the landscape of the presented exhibitions. The Director’s Project “CONTEXT-ing / Listening as CONTEXT”, is an immersive and intimate situation for listening to the work of sound artists exploring the ontological aspects of sound, while also working with various materials, approaches, and techniques. CONTEXT-ing / Listening as CONTEXT premieres on the VIP opening night in the 2,600 sq. ft. Sound Positions Pavilion – a dedicated space annexed to the main CONTEXT pavilion featuring individual sound stations for each artist, making it the most important and largest sound project in an art fair. CONTEXT-ing / Listening as CONTEXT will continue during general fair hours from December 2nd - 7th. Curated by LaRete Art Projects, Julia Draganović, Elena Forin and Claudia Löffelholz, HOT SPOTS positions provocative installations and remarkable projects by individual artists whose galleries are participating in the fair. CONTEXT will be marked by exceptional cutting-edge art selected by LaRete Art Projects’ curators for the areas of highest exposure. ART FROM BERLIN offers insight into Berlin’s influential art scene with six contemporary galleries selected by a panel of Berlin based curators and art critics. ART FROM BERLIN is presented by the Galleries Association of Berlin, landesverband berliner galerien (lvbg), with official support from the municipality of Berlin and the European Union (EU). In the BERLIN LOUNGE, lvbg will install a curated exhibition and offer information on the city’s contemporary art galleries and institutions. This microcosm

of the global art capital’s gallery community includes a cross-section of established and emerging exhibitors. “A Piece of Me” features visual arts students from the high school honors class of Miami’s renowned New World School of the Arts collaborating to produce site-specific installations. This special project is a Wet Heat Project production (Bill Bilowit, Director) in association with New World School of the Arts, Visual Arts Program (Maggy Cuesta, Dean). For this 2014 edition, we are pleased to partner with Miami Light Project for the highly anticipated Opening Night VIP Preview. The event will turn the spotlight on great music performances, transforming the night into a memorable fun filled experience. For the duration of the fair Miami Light Project will stage a selection of performances that will take place in the CONTEXT Outdoor Garden Lounge. I would like to personally thank our selection committee: Ethan Cohen, Leigh Conner, Enrique Guerrero, Alberto Magnan, Dara Metz and Jamie Smith. Our curatorial team, Julia Draganović, Elena Forin and Claudia Löffelholz. Our dedicated team, Tom Backscheider, Pamela Cohen, Louise Courtney, Jennifer Jacobs, Mindy Liu, Tina Margherio, Kay E. Tania Candiani “Fred & Tania”, 2014. Audio File. Duration: 07:27. (Special guest: Fred Sasaki)

This piece is a set of questions back and forth, a conversation made in the distance and interpreted by computer voices. It is intimate yet distant, funny and light yet sad and serious. It is like a primer to intimacy, or the act of meeting translated. Fred & Tania is a collaboration with the writer Fred Sasaki, and was commissioned by MAKE literary productions, Chicago. The research processes of Tania Candiani take as starting point language, text, and the political implications of the domestic. Her translation strategies amongst systems –linguistic, visual, phonic– and practices, generate associations, where there is a constant nostalgia for the obsolete that makes consider the discursive content of artifacts and on former projections of future. She has gathered interdisciplinary work teams that contribute to achieve poetic intersections amongst art and technology. She was awarded by the Guggenheim Fellowship Foundation, and grant awarded by the National System of Art Creators of the National Fund for Culture and the Arts of Mexico (FONCA). www.taniacandiani.com www.vimeo.com/taniacandiani

My work explores the inter-relationships between the spatial nature of sound, silence, focus, perception and the act of listening itself. It is with an incremental and meticulous process of reduction that I seek to create a complex textural field in which sounds are treated with a sculptural integrity. These works are meant to experienced at low volumes or on headphones. Richard Chartier (b.1971), based in Los Angeles, is considered one of the key figures in the current of reductionist electronic sound art termed “microsound” and Neo-Modernist. Chartier’s sound works, both as installations and live performances have been presented in galleries, museums, and festivals internationally including the 2002’s Whitney Biennial. In 2000 he formed the recording label LINE and has since curated its continuing documentation of compositional and installation work by international sound artists/composers. www.3particles.com www.lineimprint.com soundcloud.com/richard-chartier

Richard Garet “Blank Tape Positive – 2”, 2013. Sonic Construction. Duration: 27’21”.

Blank Tape Positive focuses on the modification of magnetic tape and playback machines. The magnetic tape was extensively intervened and the physical playback object was deconstructed exploring its full range of function and malfunction, with extended-technique methods that not only manipulated the natural conditions of the machine, but also its constrained mechanisms. These approaches tackled the playback device as material by turning it inside out, decontextualizing it, and mutating the capabilities of purpose and functionality. Subsequently, nothing plays properly or does what it was designed to do. Afterward, these transformative interventions established a series of sonic outcomes that were recorded, and then utilized to construct the listening piece. Richard Garet holds an MFA from Bard College. His latest exhibitions include International Biennial of Contemporary Art of Cartagena de Indias, Cartagena, Colombia; Bioderivas, Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre, Tenerife, Spain; Queens International, Queens Museum of Art, New York; Soundings: a Contemporary Score, Museum of Modern Art, New York; Extraneous to the Message, Julian Navarro Projects, NY. His sonic constructions have been published through sound art labels such as 23five, And-Oar, Winds Measure Recordings, and Contour Editions among many others. www.richardgaret.com SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS

Often, my compositions start with a feeling or emotional state. There is a likelihood of finding a certain emotion in a piece, but it is not guaranteed, nor do I know exactly when or where I will find it. The act of looking for that emotion in of itself will distort it. France Jobin is a sound / installation artist and composer residing in Montreal, whose audio art, qualified as “sound-sculpture”, reveals a minimalist approach to complex sound environments where analog and digital intersect. Her work can be “experienced” internationally in varied music venues, new technology festivals and her solo recordings on many renowned labels such as LINE (USA), baskaru (FR), ATAK and popmuzik records (JP). France Jobin’s work continues to evolve as technologies enable her to create new environments. www.francejobin.com www.facebook.com/francejobin www.twitter.com/France_Jobin www.soundcloud.com/francejobin

Emeka Ogboh, “Oshodi Stock Exchange” (abridged version), 2014. Sound. Duration: 10:53 minutes.

17 Oshodi Stock Exchange explores the informal economy in Lagos as a parallel economic sphere governed by its own internal dynamics and system, often referred to as System D. The audio piece focuses on the soundscapes of a hustling and bustling Lagos bus station, the unique voices and sounds utilized by the hawkers in identifying their wares and attracting potential customers, and the accompanying piano scores by Kristian Kowatsch. Emeka Ogboh is a Nigerian artist, whose works contemplates broad notions of listening and hearing as its main focus. He works primarily with sound to explore ways of understanding cities as cosmopolitan spaces with their unique characters. His sound recordings also consider the history and aural infrastructure of cities, Lagos, Nigeria in particular. These Lagos recordings have produced a corpus of work entitled “Lagos Soundscapes,” which he has variously installed in different foreign locales. www.14thmay.com www.lagossoundscapes.com

“Where did you sleep last night?” is performed and recorded by the artist a cappella, and re-mixed into a multi layered adaptation of this classic american folk song. “Where did you sleep last night?” tells the story of mystery, loss, desire, and deceit. Oppenheim’s haunting rendition explores the emotions with in this folk song, and re creates the song into a sweeping, disorientating, multi channeled sound installation. Manuel Rocha Iturbide “TACTOS”, 2013. Audio digital recording, six tracks, reduction for 2 tracks. Duration: 10:02

19 In this work I produce sounds blindly starting up from my tact, using my fingers and my nails. My idea was to use different disposable receptacles from daily life, like different sizes plastic bottles, soda cans or cardboard containers like cereal boxes, etc. Each one of these objects represent virtual architectural spaces with specific acoustic characteristics that when amplified are converted into resonance boxes analog to different musical instruments. The work starts with finger strokes, and develops with different tactile techniques, and ending up with the destruction of the objects. Born in 1963 in Mexico City, Manuel Rocha Iturbide is a Mexican composer and sound artist. He has received prizes and honorific mentions from different international contests like Bourges and Ars Electronica. He’s sound art works have been showed at important galleries and museums like ”Artist Space NY” (1997), “Sydney Biennale” (1998), “ARCO” (1999), “Art or Sound” show at Prada Foundation Italy (2014), etc. Important ensembles such as the “Arditti string quartet” have played he’s music. He currently lives in Mexico City where he produces his work and teaches at the UAM University. www.artesonoro.net/ManuelRochaIturbide.html soundcloud.com/artesonico www.youtube.com/watch?v=arqTtrbtD3E SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS

“Black and white lines” was created from various recordings I made in the sienna cathedral with my cell phone last year. While visiting the space, I was able to capture a series of short soft tones coming from the pipe organ, as someone was working on the instrument. Because the interior is such a spectacular space, I was interested in using the recordings to create an atmosphere of intimacy and quiet. It was created for headphone experience, and the first time it will be heard in public. Steve Roden began his sound career in the late 1970’s as the lead singer of the LA punk band seditionaries. His visual and sound work has been presented in installations and exhibitions at numerous art spaces and festivals worldwide, including: The Menil collection Houston; MOCA Los Angeles; Strasburg Museum France; ICA London; Sculpture Center NY; Los Angeles Contemporary exhibitions; Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; Singuhr – Hörgalerie in parochial. 21 The Broken Orchestra Live in Stockholm invites several professional musicians on different instruments to respond to and reinterpret a childhood recording of Bach’s ‘Ave Maria’ as performed by Wang and her brother. The work consists of a shared listening to the recording, an impromptu discussion and an improvised performance as the audience witnesses the entire process. She works with listening to instigate social organization through long-running conversations and patient collaborative labor. Hildegard Westerkamp “Für Dich—For You”, 2005. Soundscape Composition. 21 minutes.

CONTEXT art miami

22

The compositional process of Für Dich – For You was an intense encounter with Rilke’s words, not unlike an encounter with the experience of love itself and all its unsettling, complex emotional states. The poem speaks of one person’s love to another, but also and perhaps more importantly about love as an inner state towards life and the world as a whole. On another level the Hildegard Westerkamp. Photo by Andrew Czink composition explores a sense of place and belonging, of home and love. To underscore this context, the sound sources for the piece consist of specific sounds from two places that have created a sense of belonging in me: North Germany where I was born and grew up and Vancouver and the westcoast of Canada where I have lived for over thirty years as an immigrant. These sounds form the sonic/musical language of the piece together with the recorded voices (male and female) of people close to me, speaking the poem, both in German and English. Composer Hildegard Westerkamp focuses on listening, environmental sound and acoustic ecology. She was a researcher with R. Murray Schafer’s World Soundscape Project, is a founding and board member of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology and until recently was editor-in-chief of its journal Soundscape. She has taught courses in Acoustic Communication at Simon Fraser University; has conducted soundscape workshops, given concerts and lectures, and has coordinated and led Soundwalks internationally. Some of her compositional work appears in US filmmaker Gus van Sants’ films Elephant and Last Days. Poetry by Rainer Maria Rilke. English Translation by Norbert Ruebsaat. Readers of the poem are: Wendelin Bartley, Susan Benson, Anne Bourne, Louie Ettling, Peter Grant, Andra McCartney, Norbert Ruebsaat, Sonja Ruebsaat, Susanna Ruebsaat, R. Murray Schafer, Agnes Westerkamp and Hildegard Westerkamp. Für Dich – For You was commissioned by the ZKM, Karlsruhe, Germany. The composition was started during a residency at the ZKM, and was continued and completed in the Sonic Studio at Simon Fraser University and in the composer’s own studio in Vancouver. www.sfu.ca/~westerka

23 Armed with four 8011 DPA hydrophones, DPA 4060 omni mics, a Telinga parabolic reflector mic and a Sound Devices 744T digital hard disk recorder, Jana Winderen studies and records wild places which have a particular importance in our understanding of the complexity and fragility of marine ecosystems. The recordings were made on field trips to the Barents Sea (north of Norway and Russia), Greenland and Norway, deep in crevasses of glaciers, in fjords and in the open ocean. These elemaents are then edited and layered into a powerful descriptive soundscape. The open spaces of Greenland, northern winds, ravens and dogs in an icy landscape provide the setting for these haunting but dynamic pieces. Sounds of crustaceans, fish such as cod, haddock, herring and pollock recorded as they are hunting, calling for a mate or orientating themselves in their environment, are all included in the mix. The result is a powerful, mesmeric journey into the unseen audio world of the frozen north.

Héctor Falcón: Extracción Modular Constructiva con Piano Represented by Galeria Enrique Guerrero | Booth E30

Extracción Modular Constructiva con Piano (Modular Constructive Extraction with Piano) is a visual synecdoche that functions as an allegory of contemporary visual culture. Héctor Falcón generates different types of images in various levels of representation: some geometric and some organic. All of the mentioned before has the intention to create a juxtaposition of several layers as a final result. His prime interest is to explore the orchestration of different planes of an object. This oeuvre intends to convey the transgression of the object’s natural form to the divine and the sacred which should not be defiled. Extracción Modular Constructiva con Piano also reminds us that cultures grow on top of each other, in different directions.

Grant Irish: Primemover Represented by ten472 Contemporary Art | Booth E11 The inspiration for Grant Irish’s most recent work Primemover comes from the beautifully deteriorated and discarded fragments of Industrial Era machinery that lie disintegrating on a stretch of Kauai’s North Shore and throughout our landscape. Once considered the high-tech tools of their time, they are now lost to the earth, sun and sea; iron cogs that powered nations now transformed into benign treasures, left to disintegrate. The questions arises: what fossils of the hardware that store and processes data in this Age will be left for us someday, in the next era, to discover. Grant Irish is a Northern California based sculptor working primarily with bronze and stainless steel. He conducted formal training at CCAC, Oakland, CA, and his work has been exhibited widely throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. He recently completed a major public art project for the city of Oakland. ten472 Contemporary Art www.ten472.com

Susan Kleinberg: Kairos Represented by VOHN Gallery | Booth E53 Deriving from Susan Kleinberg’s work over the past two years with the scientific team of the Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de France, located in the Palais du Louvre, Kairos is a landscape of possibilities in deep migration. The video and photographs were filmed through the Centre’s Hirox microscope from elements related to an enigmatic Mesopotamian figure. They are an avalanche of the possible, microcosm and immense in space, from the center of what we don’t know to the implications of imagination. Slowly unraveling beyond descriptive, they reach to an almost undulating, disequilibrating atomic level, in deep color. This Mesopotamian figure, Ishtar, from the Louvre collection, is a major goddess, rubies from Burma in her eyes and navel, with her palm outstretched in the classic gesture of offering, an invitation into the work. The sound is from NASA’S immense Deep Space Antennae, pointed far into the universe, the sounds of light waves, starlight ... The unraveling images are an excavation through borders, an essential comment on location of perspective. The microscope has functioned as an invisible facilitator.

Susan Kleinberg is a New York-based artist whose work has been shown in the Venice Biennales of 2001, 2005, 2009, and in 2011 in “Tra” at the Palazzo Fortuny. Her work has been seen at PS1/MoMA; the Museum of Modern Art; Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires; Akbank, Istanbul Biennial; MAXXI Rome; Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin; Pulkovo Observatory in St. Petersburg; Museum of Modern Art, Buenos Aires; Museo dal Chiostro del Bramante, Rome; Total Museum in Seoul, South Korea; Alliance Francaise, Venice 2013; NIMAC, Nicosia, Cyprus in 2011 and 2013. She has been Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome. The 3D version of “Tierra Sin Males” premiered at Art Basel Miami in 2012, then was at MAC and the LOOP festival in Barcelona. Lee Jeong Lok: Tree of Life in Island Represented by Shine Artists | Booth E54

CONTEXT art miami

34

Lee Jeong Lok’s series of photographs Tree of Life represents through a glowing tree and the beautiful, postcard-quality of the surroundings, a cross-cultural metaphor for the spiritual in using an illuminated tree as a subject. For this series the photographer, who often depicts an intimate bond with nature in his work, admits to using installation, sets, scenes and digital manipulation to create his constructed scenes of illuminated trees. The artist explains the process in which he began creating the series of photographs Tree of Life, which embodies a contemporary romanticism and ardent passion for nature. “The Tree of Life series began in the winter of 2006. It was a freezing winter with bitter winds. I saw a glimpse of green at the tip of a bare branch. “Did I really see it then?” Whatever it might have been that I saw, a seed of life must have been embedded inside that dry branch devoid of vitality, like all the trees that have to endure the long, barren winter. Although not clearly visible, it is without doubt that this vitality exists. This is not the only invisible thing that exists in this world! This was a kind of awakening. Awareness of something that exists in spite of its invisibility. I struggled to find a way to express the vitality dormant in a dry branch. Going through a series of experiments, I began to use light. Light was the most appropriate medium to express the vitality that I discerned. Moreover, the sublimity of light is a universal archetype of mankind like the luminousness of trees. My work began from here.” Artist and photographer Lee Jeong Lok was born in 1971 in Gwanju, South Korea. He discovered his passion for photography as a design student at Gwangju University and subsequently studied photographic design and fine art photography in Seoul and New York. He exhibited in solo and group shows in Korea and abroad. His works are collected by the most respected Korean museums. Shine Artists www.shineartists.com

MARCK: Gegenstrom (Countercurrent) Represented by LICHT FELD Gallery | Booth E19 The video sculpture Gegenstrom (Countercurrent) is MARCK’s latest work, which presents a further development of his extensive artistic research and production of films and videos, multimedia based projects, performances, music and sculptural as well as kinetic objects. Contrary to his initial work, where the woman is locked, here she is shown in a situation where she is actually free, but this freedom is prevented by the symbol of the flowing water. As already seen in the older work Neue Freiheit (visible at the LICHT FELD gallery Booth), here she got the opportunity to flee, but she can’t.

CONTEXT art miami

36

MARCK succeeds in confronting us with the Ur-Angst. His interpretation elicits a range of emotions always outdone by the irresistible urge to watch just a little while longer. The woman moves gracefully, searching for a way out, seemingly unaffected by the hopelessness of her situation yet never losing faith in her ability to break out. This eternal struggle is familiar to all of us since birth, the fear of failure and ultimately death, but MARCK offers possibilities to the audience to identify their physical and psychical limitations and to break free. His works are not meant to provide answers and targeted interpretations on certain topics, but they raise questions and inspire considerations. MARCK (born 1964) has spent several years in Zurich, Switzerland working as a handyman and spending time to participate regularly in various art projects. In 2005 he joined a group of artists represented by the project gallery LICHT FELD in Basel, Switzerland. LICHT FELD introduced MARCK and his creations to a wider audience at the SCOPE Art fair Miami in 2007. MARCK’s work has since then been successfully presented by LICHT FELD Gallery at more the 30 art fairs in Miami, Istanbul, New York, Hamptons, Chicago, San Francisco and Basel. Antonio Sannino: Inner Outside (Octagon Project) Represented by White Room - Liquid art system | Booth E20

Inner Outside by Antonio Sannino is a single large work: a secret temporary room which occupies an area of 97 square feet. It is an installation in which the visitor can enter a large octagon consisting of eight canvases connected to each other, 6.6 feet high and 4.7 feet wide. From outside, the observer will see only the back of the eight paintings mounted on traditional wooden frames. Once he enters the installation, the observer, however, is projected into a huge painting landscape. This is a great 360째 view over the city of New York as seen from the famous Empire State Building. Antonio Sannino was born in Naples in 1959; he lives and works between Naples and Rome. He inherited from his uncle a passion for art that led him to deepen his studies on landscape. He has been assimilating, studying and testing them for many years, so that he was able to find elements of renewal. Starting from this heritage, he begun looking further towards landscapes and places where nature keeps colliding with artificial elements. He collaborates with White Room, part of Liquid art system, since 2007.

A Piece of Me “A Piece of Me” features visual arts students from the high school honors class of Miami's renowned New World School of the Arts collaborating to produce site-specific installations in response to a significant artwork by an acclaimed alumnus from their school, Hernan Bas. The source artwork will be a signature Bas video in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, “All By Myself” (2004, single-channel video, courtesy of the artist and Frederic Snitzer Gallery). In keeping with the approach of art student challenges developed by Wet Heat Project, the exhibition’s producer, the young collaborators must employ a materially antithetical medium, outside the comfort zone of their emerging practice. This edition of “A Piece of Me” will require the new artworks’ response medium to be paper-based and will be exhibited together with the original art video by their predecessor, Hernan Bas. “A Piece of Me” is a Wet Heat Project (Bill Bilowit, Director) in association with New World School of the Arts, Visual Arts Program (Maggy Cuesta, Dean) .
