editor’s note
Dear Readers How time flies – more than half of 2013 has gone by – have you visited the libraries? With constant changes in IT technology and fashion trends, it is important that we maintain traditions and be mindful of our heritage so that these are passed down to the next generation. So do check out and participate in heritage programmes such as, Learning Journey: Heritage Tree and Heritage Roads Tour, When you say “I do” All about Malay Traditional Wedding, Campaigns SG!, Monumental Weddings. In addition, we are celebrating our Seniors with Silver Arts. Grandparents, parents and children there is something for everyone, east meets West, traditional vs new – experience Chinese knotting workshop or finger painting or sign up for Flamenco Traditional Dance Workshop. For a full list of the programmes and activities, do turn to pages 7–11. Not squirmy about getting your hands dirty? Come to Geylang East Public Library for Clay leaf making activity, pottery and wheel throwing demonstration. These activities are part of the Leaf Making exhibition by Tampines Changkat Ceramic Club. What’s more, find out how you can cultivate healthy eating habits and maintain your child’s active lifestyle, through Eat Right, Get Moving, A Healthier Child. Last but not least, Bulan Bahasa is back with new and innovative programmes. Spend an afternoon listening to Cultural Medallion winners and SEA writer award recipients in Literary Gig: Under One Sky. There will also be an art interpretation competition that will require participants to interpret a selected short story through various forms of 2dimensional art in Gajahpretasi. Libba Bray once said, “The library card is a passport to wonders and miracles, glimpses into other lives, religions, experiences, the hopes and dreams and strivings of ALL human beings, and it is this passport that opens our eyes and hearts to the world beyond our front doors, that is one of our best hopes against tyranny, xenophobia, hopelessness, despair, anarchy, and ignorance”. Dondang Sayang!
by Naadhirah Ridza
When one hears the word “Peranakan”, the first thing that comes to mind for many of us would be the food. No doubt the Peranakan cuisine is mouth-watering, from ayam buah keluak to nyonya kueh but the rich Peranakan culture boasts much more than that. From the architecture of their houses to the fashionable nonya kebaya and kasut manek, this community is part of Singapore’s diverse cultural heritage. Earlier in July, a group of library patrons visited the NUS Baba House, which was once the ancestral home of a Peranakan family in the early 20th century. It has since been reconstructed and restored as a heritage house. For all of the participants, it was a unique opportunity to visit a Straits Chinese family home where they learnt about its symbolic architecture. Led by a docent, the group also discovered more about the culture and domestic lifestyle of the Peranakans in the 20th century. Look out for more heritage tours and traditional arts-themed programmes at our public libraries this month! Come walk with us to the Malay Heritage Centre and Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall, or join us for painting and craft workshops, such as Batik Painting, Chinese Knots or Pulli Kolam-making. These programmes are proudly brought to you by “Fill Yourself With the Arts”!

Monumental Weddings 13 September – 6 October Woodlands Regional Library
Monumental Weddings presents a collection of historic and contemporary wedding photographs taken at Singapore’s national monuments. These unique images capture more than just couples on their wedding day and their love stories; they also feature historic buildings which have earned a permanent position in the landscape of Singapore as preserved monuments. These photographs reveal not only changes in wedding fashions, venues and photography, but also certain sociological and cultural trends and developments.

Campaigns SG!
18 - 29 September, Sengkang Public Library
Singapore has a long history of national campaigns. From 1958 to 1995, there were more than 200 campaigns with a broad set of themes which resulted in Singaporeans being exposed to more than 10 national campaigns a year. Campaigns have to move along with the changing times and despite societal changes, many campaigns still remain relevant today. They will continue to be an integral part of the social fabric of Singapore society. This exhibition selects five campaigns and explores their history and evolution over time. The exhibition also has an interactive component which allows visitors an opportunity to be featured in the Singapore’s campaign posters.

Burst the Silence Photo Exhibition 28 September – 11 October, Jurong Regional Library
De-stigmatising mental health issues starts from creating awareness amongst youths. The Community Health Assessment Team’s (CHAT) Burst the Silence campaign encourages youths to speak up about mental health concerns they might be facing. This photo project was done in collaboration with British photographer, James Bent of La Mode Outré. Through a collection of portraits of like-minded individuals, it puts faces to the cause and breaks down the stigma of mental health issues. CHAT is a team of healthcare professionals dedicated to helping youths with mental health concerns through youth awareness and providing a confidential assessment service at no charge. The Way of Muri Ilya Boyashov, 2012 Hesperus Press
Muri was a cat which had led a blissful life in a Bosnian town. It had its own bowl and blanket, and servants in the house to feed and pamper it. Civil war broke out in Yugoslavia in 1992 and the occupants of that house (including all the spirits that dwelled in it) were forced to flee, quickly and suddenly such that Muri, which had been out in the meadows when the bombs fell, returned to a deserted home. Thus began the journey of a cat (which had the ability to communicate with spirits) in search of his home and the family that kept it. In the course of the story and Muri’s journey we are introduced to numerous characters, some humans and some animals. That might have been the author’s design because one of the themes in this book is whether animals can reason or only humans are capable of reasoning. It is a theme that runs alongside the question whether life itself is an infinite journey or a clearly defined path. Underlying these deep themes lurk dark questions about free will, fate, and God. It is also an inquiry into whether life is best approached from optimism or pessimism. Thus the book was dedicated ‘to all those who have a path, as well as those who do not.’
The first home Muri wandered into belonged to a Jew called Jacob. However, Jacob and his fellow villagers were soon forced to flee as well – all save a stubborn old man called Abraham. Jacob led the wanderers with no real destination in mind, only the reminder that ‘God’s people are destined to wander for all eternities’. But that depends on which god it was. On the other side of the world, the story takes us to one Tong Rampa in Tibet who was embarking on his pilgrimage to Mount Kailash. Jacob and Tong Rampa had much in common; to be precise, neither had much – no more than the clothes on their backs when they began their respective journeys. The difference lay in their perception of their journey, and that, in turn, determined how they fared. SEPTEMBER 2013 // golibrary.nlb.gov.sg
This rich and stimulating book is only 152 pages long but would have made an excellent textbook for literature and philosophy. It is a book about journeys of all kinds, leading us to contemplate whether, there is in fact only one journey, and if so, what might that be, and how ought one to undertake it? Muri embarked on his with a sense of purpose – to find its bowl and blanket. In contrast, Dick, the Sperm whale, was taught an early lesson in life by a veteran whale to rejoice in fate and be glad that it was born a Sperm whale. Dick had nothing but its bulky frame (and the thick blubber that was to save its life) and a happy-go-lucky attitude, swimming and diving where it pleased. On the other hand, Muri, and to a similar extent, Timosha the goose, had purpose and deep desires. Timosha, a Russian goose had the incredible talent for Arithmetic and, though tested time and time again, consistently came up with the right answers. There were some polemicists who had planned to use Timosha as proof that animals can reason. Yet it was Timosha’s special genius that caused the Russian government to have it secreted away from the public – and the CIA. Some of us disappear from the world and no one knows where or why we have gone. Does Timosha’s fate matter more to us than that of Sheik Abdulla Nadari, ‘owner of thirty beautiful women and fifteen oilfields’? Sheik Abdullah builds special aeroplanes that failed even though the last one of which was named Hope. Sheik Abdullah was more like Herr Helmke, the paraplegic lecturer and collector of art who also happened to fantasise that he would one day climb the cliff facing his home. Fantasies, the author warned, can become obsession. That is what prevents us from seeing that dreams do not always come true. Are our lives like that of the salmon’s, or the tuna’s, or the cod’s? Against the odds, fighting hungry bears and strong current, they make their way purposefully and with gritty determination each year, following their path to spawn. Tunas, the delicacy of Sperm whales, are long-distance swimmers from Java to Hawaii, across the Pacific Ocean. They lose hundreds of thousands of their numbers along the way, yet that does not deter them from their own route to perpetuate their species. Cods were described as ‘arrogant, greedy marauders’ set off for Newfoundland, knowing that trawling nets await them. Yet they go – ‘They must have their reasons’ - or perhaps not. Those who set out blindly on a mission ‘cannot conceive of an alternative.’ Reviewed by The Alexandrian
China’s War with Japan 1937-1945 Rana Mitter, 2013 Allen Lane
China became a republic in 1911. Her first president, Yuan Shi Kai (Sun Yat-sen was the provisional president), developed visions of grandeur, and in 1915, sought to crown himself the new emperor of China. Serious and widespread opposition forced him to give up that ambition. In the years that followed, Japan stepped up its bullying of China with its twenty one demands. The impotence of China against a much smaller country, due mainly to the misrule and ineffectiveness of Yuan Shi Kai, ensured that when Yuan died in 1916, China was ruled by warlords. The Kuomintang (‘Nationalists’) of Sun Yat-sen under the leadership of Chiang Kai-shek gradually overcame the warlords. That was achieved with the aid of the Chinese Communist Party (‘Communists’), formed in 1921. But by 1927 the alliance split and the Chinese civil war between the Nationalists and the Communists began. From that period to 1949, roughly, China’s history was mainly about two men – Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek. Mitter’s book is about the important segment within that period. That segment was the war between China and Japan. War began in the summer of 1937 in northern China in a remote place known as the ‘Marco Polo Bridge’, in the village of Wanping. While uneasiness was about to fill the European air, the smell of the gunpowder of the Second World War was experienced in Asia – at the ‘Marco Polo Bridge’. City after city fell to the Japanese. At that time, there were many foreign concessions (British, American, French, Russian and German) in the cities overrun by the Japanese and so there was no major panic because the Japanese took over control in an orderly manner. That changed when the military mood in Japan increased with a corresponding move by Chiang Kai-shek towards liberating China. The assault by the Japanese troops when they ransacked Nanjing, the former capital of the Kuomintang, is told in chapter seven of Mitter’s book under the title ‘Massacre at Nanjing’. It was a period of which there is much to talk about. It was not just about the cruelty of man in general, and the Japanese troops at that time in particular, but also of the wisdom - or cowardice of the Chinese army in abandoning the defence of Nanjing. Captivating accounts were drawn from the diaries of Cheng Ruifeng (a member of the Ginling Women’s College), John Rabe (a German), and Minnie Vautrin (a director of the Ginling Women’s College). A more detailed but controversial account can be read from Iris Chang’s ‘Rape of Nanking, 1997, Basic Books’.
The problems facing Chiang Kai-shek throughout the war were legion. He was
compelled to work with the Communists controlling the north and whom he could not trust, inspire surviving warlords to fight with the Kuomintang, and deal with spies and traitors to the Kuomintang and to him – men such as Zhou Fohai and Wang Jingwei (the latter had been the favourite to succeed Sun Yat-sen as leader of the Kuomintang until Chiang Kai-shek eclipsed him) as he tried valiantly to expel the Japanese from China. The internal threat to Chiang from Wang Jingwei could not be underestimated. Nothing embitters an ambitious person more than the deprivation of their perceived birthright. However, Wang was no match for Chiang in the Kuomintang leadership struggle. At Zhou Fohai’s instigation, Wang finally betrayed Chiang openly and collaborated with the Japanese, and was thus given control of large parts of eastern China – only to be betrayed in turn by his Japanese benefactors. He was to die of disease and ignominy in Japan in 1944. The greatest betrayal of Chiang Kai-shek might, perhaps, at least from Chiang’s personal view, have come from the Americans, who promised much and delivered little. They delivered to the Kuomintang an experienced and intelligent army general with a poor emotional quotient – General Joseph Stilwell (known as ‘Vinegar Joe’). Having Joe and Chiang together was like having two tigers on a molehill. But as Vinegar Joe undermined Chiang Kai-shek in the battlefield, President Roosevelt undermined Chiang in the diplomatic field. Chiang was invited to the big power summits but always treated as a bit player. More importantly, Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill conspired to keep China from emerging as a major power. Mitter thus slanted his story to lead to the question whether Chiang was a hero (who succeeded in many ways) or an inept commander who set China’s rise back many years. One thing that is reasonably certain is that had Chiang not held Japan at bay over the crucial years when the West were facing Hitler, the German-Japan alliance might have given us a different world today. Instead, the alliance fell apart, and the rest is history as we know it. Reviewed by The Alexandrian SEPTEMBER 2013 // golibrary.nlb.gov.sg

Tajuk: Senaman Sebagai Ubat
Penulis: Persatuan Pengguna Pulau Pinang Penerbit & Tahun Penerbitan: Pulau Pinang: Persatuan Pengguna Pulau Pinang, 2009.

Title: Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking [sound recording] Author: Susan Cain Narrated by: Kathe Mazur Publisher: New York: Random House, Inc.: Books on Tape, 2012 Call No.: AV 155.232 CAI “I worry that there are people who are put in positions of authority because they’re good talkers, but they don’t have good ideas. It’s so easy to confuse schmoozing ability with talent. Someone seems like a good presenter, easy to get along with, and those traits are rewarded. Well, why is that? They’re valuable traits, but we put too much of a premium on presenting and not enough on substance and critical thinking.” – excerpt from Quiet We live in a society where extroversion is celebrated and widely seen as a pre-requisite to success and even happiness. Quiet, by Susan Cain, refutes this point of view and in her insightful book (wonderfully read by Kathe Mazur) discusses the strength of introverts. Introverts, with their strength and ability to empathise and their own unique way of working, are a necessity for the advancement of today’s society. Anyone who works with introverts, a parent, an educator or an employer can draw meaningful insights and information from this book, hopefully changing the way we view this special group of people. Title: Mr Darcy Goes Overboard: A Tale of Tide and Prejudice Author: Belinda Roberts Publisher: Naperville, Ill.: Sourcebooks Landmark, c2011 Call No.: English Y ROB Pick up this novel for a quirky re-telling of Pride and Prejudice – with a contemporary setting (the English seaside). Mrs Bennet is bent on marrying her daughters off to well-to-do young men who happen to holiday in this seaside resort. The story is quick-paced, author Roberts mimicking Jane Austen’s original plot, chapter by chapter. The difference is that the characters swim and sail in bikinis and trunks, and even Lizzy’s aunt Mrs Gardner communicates by texting just like today’s teens. There is more drama too, Darcy falling into the sea as Lizzy rejects him, and Lizzy’s dinghy nearly capsizing as Darcy hands her a bottle with a screw top. This is an entertaining rewrite of the Jane Austen classic, light-hearted and amusing, targeted at today’s readers. Reviewed by Ng Hwee Miang

Title: Taken 2 [videorecording] Publisher: Twentieth Century Fox presents a EuropaCorp, M6 Films, Grive Productions co-production with the participation of Canal+, M6 and Cine; produced by Luc Besson; written by Luc Besson & Robert Mark Kamen; directed by Olivier Megaton. Call No.: English AV 791.4372 TAK -[ART] Even if you are not a Liam Neeson’s fan, there is no reason not to look forward to the return of his character as Bryan Mills. The first movie in the series begins with a convincingly distressing scene where an ex-Secret Service Agent, Bryan Mills is forced to act when his holidaying daughter is snatched by sex traffickers. In Taken 2, he appears to be more laid-back, reconciled with formerly estranged ex-wife and bonded afresh with his daughter. Problems begin to surface when an Albanian gangster wants revenge. Why? Because Bryan kills his son in the first movie, well, as his son was the kidnapper of Bryan’s daughter. The twist here is Bryan gets ‘taken’. With his very specialized set of skills, the resourceful ex-agent communicates with his daughter, Kim, from a hidden gadget to help him escape. This leads to the film’s most creative scene where Kim uses a map, a shoelace and grenades to ascertain her father’s location. This revenge-action-thriller takes place in Istanbul, which sees Bryan running through the city’s busy bazaars and unstable rooftops in his attempts to evade the gangsters. Geylang Serai: The Making of a Malay Emporium 3.30 – 5.30 pm Possibility Room, Level 5, National Library Building
To most Singaporeans, Geylang Serai is Singapore’s principal “Malay area”. Indeed, Geylang Serai has been associated with the Malay community for so long that most people do not realise that the area did not start up as a Malay kampung but had in fact been opened up by European planters like Dr Joachim D’Almeida, Thomas Owen Crane and Thomas Dunman. For a long time, Geylang was Singapore’s eastern junction, the principal village and the terminus of Singapore’s early tramway system. The Alsagoff family acquired much land around Geylang in the latter half of the 19th century, and the area began to be settled as a primarily Malay area. This talk traces the historical development of Geylang Serai and its key personalities and sheds light on a forgotten part of one of Singapore’s most important historical and cultural areas.

From Sharity Elephant to Singa Lion, Two is Enough to Clean & Green, campaigns and their mascots have become an idiosyncratic and often nostalgic part of Singapore’s national heritage. No other country has embraced campaigning as much as we have. To highlight this slice of Singapore identity to the local community, the National Library of Singapore, in partnership with independent art curator Alan Oei presents the exhibition – Campaign City: Life In Posters.
