An Amusing Imagination of Nomadic Net by Hur Jin

Based on critical perspective of contradictory reality and irrationalities of the society, Hur Jin has long tried to search for the human beings of the awakening present and historical consciousness. In the art series of Revelation (黙示) presented in the late 1980s, he showed his audacious experimental mind and in-depth thinking ways. Started with this, he focused his attention on the life and future hope of people which could be barely seen from the existing macro discourse of history and their present and the sense of independence, where the past and future interact with each other with the works including a multi-format frame Changing (流轉) in 90s, Multiple Man (多 重人間) and Record of 10,000 People’s Life (萬人譜) in 93, Anonymous Man _ the Modern Ten Traditional Symbols of Longevity in 98, and Anonymous Man _ Waiting for Godot and others in 99. And such a critical mind has since 2000 led to another study of true freedom and happiness which are inherent in men, resulting in Nomadic Animals + Man, Nomadic Animals + Man + Civilization, and Nomadic Animals series, all of which added another level of a circular net of nature and civilization to his artistic career. It has been noted that Hur Jin would truly lead a new modern Korean painting era as his works contain in them a kind of a double-edged sword of non-hierarchical identity through self-denial and the revival of narrative, the exclusive property of post-modernism and avant-garde. And at the same time, for this, he has had to reflect on

And this might be due to his background and career to some degree. In this solo exhibition in 2012, he uses various colored planes and Chinese characters background and brings excellent horses and wild tigers into relief through Combination of Two Other Kinds and Nomadic Animals series, where relations formed among different forces gain a deep insight and horses and their springing play the role as the basis of practical imagination in order to derive some introspection on the human subject who leads the flow of unlimited space·time and the future that interacts with history and tradition. Hur Jin is now on the road of tradition vs newness, form vs narrative. What is most noticeable however is that he maintains a positive view on different elements and plural and multi-layered network which all construct the world, and dynamic energy from their antagonistic force relations. Trying to overcome unbeatable authority and dreaming of a co-existence and win-win world, Hur Jin’s amusing imagination of this nomadic net as a new leap will be much expected to show a new and beautiful dynamism of change.

Kim, Gil Sook Solo Exhibition

Still Paintings Erasing Limitations of Reason and Emotion The artist Kim, Gil Sook’s works are not painting of copying something or of reproducing specific shape. Since non objective abstract painting in contemporary art history is an act for seeking essential of painting, it is likely to see her works from a view of an experiment in forms on flat painting space based on the flow in modern art history, which is a common practice. If you directly see her works, however, you will feel something stirring even without any shapes or symbols of a concrete object. Although her works do not reproduce visible shape, they make you feel weird as if you encountered huge existence or you were absorbed into some energy. That can be partly because her works are of a huge scale but more significantly because they imply beyond what canvas shows with overwhelming movements of brushes and screens themselves painted with those strokes of the brushes. What the artist says is, however, that these movements of brushes are results from erasing or making a stop for something rather than for drawing one. She says she would spend a few months or even years getting emotional and excited or focusing her energy before canvas to create a piece. It takes a while more before she starts making the brush strokes. Once she begins to work on the piece, in the blink, she finds something that she has longed for and intended to see after focusing, stopping and erasing the screen which has already been painted. It is exactly when she stops the work. The artist intends to leave her works between stressful traces of painting and erasing not to make her thoughts or feelings reproduced with so much vivid shape. The artist wants to stop when approaching something after wandering unknown space. Therefore, she focuses more on when and where to stop and erase than on making a drawing. It seems that the artist vaguely believes she can come near to something that has been longed for.

The halt for the artist can be a climactic moment when she and other unknown existence meet and a moment of liberation from time and space which is instant and eternal at the same time. As the unknown object that the artist longs for cannot be locked up in or defined as any physical limitations such as time or space, the artist would just leave the uncertain and ambiguous traces faced when escaping from reproducible shape. Thus, the artist only wants to leave her traces from the moment of inspiration on canvas except detailed description or reproduction as a scar is more powerful to express patient’s pain than any other realistic literature or photograph. The more fixed an object is to specific shape or limitations, the farther it gets from the existing reality. Her works are heading a point beyond a mere art genre of painting. Since it can be vivid traces as a human being and nonverbal record to express her unique way to communicate with the world by a kind of echoes, her paintings are not just one of artistic scenes but also one incident implying artist’s various emotions such as pain, pleasure and excitement to the unknown world which she encounters.
