Move on Asia Video Art in Asia 2002 to 2012 The “Discovery of a new continent of art” (Peter Weibel) was already an object of the exhibition at the ZKM | Karlsruhe in 2007 curated by Wonil Rhee entitled “Thermocline of Art. New Asian Waves”. The large-scale show on the newest tendencies in the Asian art scene prompted huge international attention. The rapid development in the sphere of the Asiatic “moving image” required a continuation and presentation of this theme already after six years. Under the multi-layered title “Move on Asia. Video Art in Asia 2002 to 2012”, the ZKM shows the development of precisely this genre, and points to the increasing significance of Asia in global contemporary art.

An atmosphere of upheaval is perceptible throughout present-day Asia, which finds expression in a new discourse on contemporary Asiatic art that transgresses all genres. It is not the adherence and conservation of past values, but the recovery, creation, integration and transformation which constitute the guidelines under which the new Asiatic art liberates itself from the western models and achieves an increasingly greater independence. Until the turn of the century, as an art genre the video continued to be attributed to the western hemisphere – and in spite of the fact that its most important representatives were from Asia; over the last two decades, however, independent video cultures have evolved that have found a global public

last but not least at flourishing biennales and art exhibitions throughout the Asian continent. The selection of works that make up “Move on Asia” draws on the large-scale festival of moving digital pictures in Asia of the same name organized by a network of 20 curators and 40 video artists since 2004. The exhibition which cooperates with Alternative Space LOOP in Seoul (Korea) presents video art from China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. In addition to recognized artists, recent works by the young generation are also on show.

An interactive installation entitled “Global Fire” by the Paris-based artist Du Zhenjun may also be viewed in connection with the exhibition: a huge inflatable dome in which the visitors may ignite the flags of 200 countries with lighters on heat censors. Also on show in the ZKM_PanoramaLab the interactive video installation “40+4. Art is Not Enough! Not Enough”, resulted from the collaboration between the curator Davide Quadrio, the filmmaker Lothar Spree as well as the video artist Xiaowen Zhu. The Sublime Scolding a Vulgar Era The world of Lee yi-on delivers the huge epic like space, material, and time, the speculation of human beings and civilization, the mutual relation between human and society, the circulative relation of imagination and reality. It echoes the lamentation of the civilization at present level on the basis of humanity of introspection.

In recent of his exhibition, it was shown in the theme of ‘time travel’. The journey can be travel into not a street peddling full of mass production, consumption, appetite, and sexual desire, and a hobby, but the existential aestheticism jumbled the contrary in lack of taste. One day, Lee Yi-on confessed about the time travel as follows; “a certain dead ideology can be recovered depends on the view looking back to the past.

Therefore, the past is not locked in a coffin of death, but is a state of seeds implied all information and energy of recovery.”

In conclusion, this statement can be applied not only the past, but also the future. Understanding about the artist’s context that we should not be confined in a daily routine, but also the existential prison, it can be acceptable the deepest significance of ‘time travel’ of the artist’s suggestion. It should be pursued to beyond recognition of ‘the inertial enlighten thought system’ of self-conceit which ‘I’ only can be the criterion of universe and history.

Above all, in order to seek to the artist’s own peculiar way in different from the majority; it should be required to take the self-belief, and philosophical background regardless of the artistic ability. As the pioneer to be faced with the essential question of probability, he has been keeping on the way to open the possibility that can be predicting the quality of civilization in the society and the era.

인천_동내방내 아카이브 프로젝트

<책소개> 2012년 10명의 사진가가 인천문화재단에서 후원하는 <동네방네 인천 사진아카이브 프로젝트>에 참여하였고, 그 결과물 중 일부인 컬러 318장과 흑백 29장, 총 347장의 사진을 수록하여 사진집 ‘인천을 보다’를 발간하였다. 이 사진들은 사진집 9쪽에서 밝히고 있듯이 관상학적 독해로서 “인천이라는 도시의 외적, 표면적 현시에 사로잡히지 않고 사물의 표피 밑을 관통하며 잘 드러 나지 않는, 인천의 성격을 파악하려는 비판적 기획‘의 일환으로 사진가 스스로 본능적인 시선의 접촉을 통해 현장의 대상을 사진이미지로 생산하고자 한 것들이다. 아카이브로서 단순히 과거 와 현재의 자료들을 수집하고 분류하는 차원의 사진들이 아닌, ’그 도시의 잃어버린 꿈을, 순장된 도시의 꿈을 깨워내는 일”(177쪽)로서 인천을 보려는 사진가들의 노력을 담으려고 했다. 이 사진집을 보게 되면 단순한 기록을 넘어 사회문화적 비평의 요소로서 아카이브를 다루는 사진작가 8명을 중심으로 2012년의 인천 각 지역이 어떤 모습으로, 오늘날 인천이 상징화되어 이 세계 가 어떻게 비춰졌는지를 알 수 있을 것이다. (참고로 2012년 이전 사진을 찍은 김보섭 작가, 임기성 작가 작품도 동시에 수록함으로써 과거와 현재를 대비하고 있다.)

<지은이 소개> 김보섭, 김혜원, 안우동, 이기본, 이상윤, 이재훈, 임기성, 손승현, 장수선, 정현명. 위의 작가들 중 김혜원, 안우동, 이기본, 이상윤, 이재훈, 손승현, 장수선, 정현명 등은 인천문화재단에서 후원하는 2012 동네방네 인천 사진아카이브 프로젝트 레지던시에서 활동하였다. 지은이 모두 다수의 개인전을 하고 다수의 단체전에 참여하였으며, 한국 사회에서 여전히 사진가로서 활동하고 있다.
