TITLE Groping for Hidden Passage artist Jeon, Sung-Kyoo DURATION 4 - 17 September 2013 PLACE Lee Seoul Gallery, 23-2 Insa-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul,Korea 110-290 CONTACT +82 (0)2. 720. 0319 Artist Statement The main point of my art work is how to visualize the reciprocal action toward ultimate spiritual life based on faith, which is embodied by my art integrated into natural science and humanities. The first view point of work was to suspect contemporary phenomena of civilization with high technological simulation which has confused the people between reality and virtual reality. Therefore, I have inquired into the hidden truth of the matter, and in my art I have groped the relationships between natural phenomena and human condition. Recently I realized particle movement in quantum physics is related to human consciousness through‘the observer effect’and‘String theory’.

My work is inspired by both of them and pursues the substan tiality of transcending time and space through hidden passage. I am interested in the dynamic space interacting between matter and spirit, human and nature, life and God. Therefore, I have applied clothing form that implies the culture of human life, as a passage between an invisible in This passage is embodied in the winding organic image, a mingling of viscera and particulate matter. Through the movement of delicate lines and circulation of incessant waves, I express multidimensional space with mixed images such as biological forms, physicochemical oscillating particles. I can feel and see them with my eyes clothed.This intangible and tangible images derive from scientific study and religious imagination. I contrast the smallest of particles with the vastness of the universe, because I grope for connecting hidden passage between the interior and exterior realms. It is the tension in this interactive living space, in combination with curiosity, that provides me spiritual stimulation.

As several parts on a human body can display numerous expressions not only in face but also in hands and feet and through motions of the entire body and various aesthetic and formative elements are implied as well, it is observed throughout art history that this material has been frequently treated by artists. Artist Eunyoung Jo is dealing with the human body as well and her work started from drawing is adopting traditional expression styles for the human body in some degree while it is seen that she is making some unconventional attempts through her perspectives on human body or her methods to handle that. Firstly, it is that human body is rather a replacement for expressions of certain contents than an object for expression to artist Eunyoung Jo. In fact, artist Eunyoung Jo intended to be fascinated with expression itself because of personal and internal circumstances rather than express something specifically. The object she chose at that moment was human body. The replacement could of course be the artist’s internal situations but it can be extendedly considered, in a regard that she wanted to be immersed in expression of human body itself, the object might be invisible environment like social structure or formative situations from her personal environment or something integral that surrounded the artist herself. It means that the whole internal and external situations and environment that made the artist be able to do nothing but seek out an object that she could be fascinated with can be the original form of replacement. Therefore, human body is the world which implies all these things and the more fascinated she becomes with this object, the deeper she would sink into that world and it could be the only means through which the world could be forgotten. Secondly, her work directly seems that it focuses on a figure’s pose and delicate look but it actually makes people’s eyes stay in space between expressional, implicative and abstract images that are confronted with the figure.

which seem to be a part of a building, shapes like door gratings are sometimes involved or abstract shapes like a whirlwind or a thing under water often makes appearances as well, which is interpreted as to make a way out for the eyes that were captured on human body and it seems that she intends to make formative device to call people’s attention that can easily be sunk into an aesthetic sense of beauty in human body.

At the moment when human body in reality and space are about to be absorbed into or correspond to shapes of lines, colors and figures, it is seen that the world of sense hidden in other side of colorful formative expression allows to experience new stimulus on the border of real and sensible surface while interacting with the real world and because of this, the human body that is so familiar with usual sight seems to play a role of passage opening up the third sensory organ in a way. By applying formative changes on the aesthetic of human body, it does not remain only with realistic expression but the human body comes to have a perception on illusory images and functions as a medium to draw emotional space.

Thirdly, as human body to the artist is the root of life that breathes, moves and perceives before being a visual object for her work, being different from everyday objects, the artist wants to paint the inner world under the human’s outer skin rather than the skin.That may be vitality itself, feeling or cognition from a person, inner breathing of the artist herself or internal energy accumulated to reach the critical point. Therefore, we can see that artist Eunyoung cho is obviously painting human body but she intends to paint things beyond figurational world like senses extended from body’s pose or eyes, internal emotions related to imagery or the artist’s thinking rather than referential area that human body has. It may be because that is the inherent root of human nature like life itself. Thus, it seems that the artist expresses with being immersed to human body while she comes to realize herself and human beings and tries to find out the way to perceive the world which surrounds her through this work. By doing so, it is also seen that she discovers the artist herself while she is identifying the place through this series of process where she intends to restore a point which the artist herself should forget and senses which she should take back from that point like granulating.

ARTIST CUBE www.artistcube.com 부스전시 전문공간 “아티스트 큐브”에서 전시작가를 공모합니다

“아티스트 큐브”는 전시장에 7개의 큐브(부스)가 설치되어 있는 부스전시 전문공간입니다. 부스별 개인전시와 포트폴리오 전시를 통해 이 공간에서 기획자들이 작가를 직접 만나게 되며 여기서 선발된 작가를 개인전으로 초대하게 됩니다. 부스전시 참여는 개인과 단체가 가능하며 참여방식은 웹하드로 포트폴리오 제출후 참가승인된 작가분들은 소정의 참가비를 통해 접 수한후 전시일정 결정하게 됩니다. 좋은 작업의 가능성을 보여준 작가분들을 매 분기별로 선발하게 되며 선발된 작가는 사이아트 스 페이스에서 초대형식의 개인전을 진행하게되는데 리플렛과 평문 전시오프닝등 전시전반을 지원한 개인전을 진행하게 될 것입니다. 또한 월간 아트앤맵은 미술관계자 및 애호가들과 소통하는 대량전시메일과 지면 등을 통해 아티스트 큐브의 전시를 지원하고 협력 하게 될 것이며 더 많은 사람들에게 작가분들의 전시를 알리는데 도움이 될것입니다. 아티스트 큐브 공간은 일반 관람객뿐만 아니 라 특별히 여러 전시공간 담당자들과 전시기획자들에게 열린 공간이 되고자 하므로 작가분들에게 더 많은 전시기회가 만들어질 수 있을 것입니다. 작품과 포트폴리오를 전시하는 본 공간은 작품을 보여주는 공간이자 작가를 선보이는 공간이 될 것입니다.
