Tony Nero’s Art

NEWS

The really random newsletter all about my art.

Art on the move Wow! Words fail me. I thought the summer months were busy for me with the amount of art in the city but the past three months have also seen an array or arty activities. How exciting it has been for local art, with the new space ‘The Gallery’ opening to showcase the work of

local and national artists, Harriet’s Gallery and Andronica have been jumping, with an explosion of exciting new works. The highlight for me was in October, showing my Black Heroes collection of paintings at the BH Live event in Wembley Stadium. Here I am Below hanging out with Professor Elizabeth Anionwu CBE.

Heroes takes Wembley by storm With all so many exciting things happening one after another throughout the year, in October it was a privilege to be able to take part in BH Live at Wembley. To be a part of this historic two-day event at such a venue was one of those lifetime experiences. You really had to be there to feel and enjoy the atmosphere. I met so many interesting people including some old friends such as Professor Elizabeth Anionwu CBE (ViceChair of the Mary Seacole Statute Appeal). To say that my work was well recieved is truly an understatement. I was also invited to show at a variety of other exhibitions, sadly was unable to do but look forward to some of the events next year.

Harriet’s Gallery - City Treasures Following its prestigious launch in June, Harriet’s Gallery followed up with a vengence, putting on an amazing display of art, jewellery and antiques plus much more from a selection of local artists. Another great opening evening and well presented exhibition, all thanks to

the efforts of curator and gallery director Dawn Birch-James. Sadly I still haven’t found my memory card from my camera with all the telltale pix of the event, so all thanks to photographer Paul Saunders, who was also exhibiting, for the super pictures above.

Black History celebrations at embe In October, all thanks to proprietor Nick Ritta, embe restaurant played host to an exciting celebration for Black History Month. The exhibition featured my growing collection of works and works by artists StaceyAnn Cole, and graphic artist Anselmo Pelembe. The event was offically opened by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Cliff Walker, followed by a special poem ‘Heroes Uniting the World’ written and performed by Sonya King. On the first day King Don mesmerised us with his melodic steel pan sounds. Thanks to everyone for making it come together including SK Florals and Vdesigns6.

Mayor opens new Exhibition Nature inside and out An exhibition of paintings by

It was a joy to have the mayor open the new exhibition ‘Nature inside and out’ at Andronica. As the advertising suggest, a glorious display of sumptuous colours and textures inspired by our natural world, and that it certainly is. You really need to view this exhibition to get the full feel of it. Curated by artist René Viner, the exhibition is on untill the end of January.

Inspired by Alice Big thank you to Alice for choosing me for her art project. Alice who is a keen athlete also helps to inspire and encourage younger children at school with their art. This piece of work was produced during the summer holiday and I am chuffed that she chose me as her arts hero. Thank you Alice, this is the sort of thing that inspires me to inspire others. Catching up with Alice over at the P’boro Tracks.

This painting ‘Winter across the Fens’ is not actually the most recent but is one of, my most recent. I thought that seeing this is the winter issue I decided to add a sprinkling of snow. This piece was inspired by a photo taken by Steve Medwell looking out from his old office window and currently hangs in Harriet’s Gallery. Now this painting below ‘Spilled Strawberry Juice’ is most recent and can now be seen in the new exhibition ‘Nature Inside and Out’ at Andronica’s.

Actor Rudolph Walker stopped for a few minutes for me to take this picture. Rudolph, more recently known as Patrick of Eastenders, was one of the first black actors to be seen regularly on British TV. We spoke briefly about doing a portrait so yeah, maybe soon.

Picture of the day Mixing up with Dwayne Fields the first black Briton to get to the North Pole. Plans are currently being made for an expedition to the South Pole. I will surely be doing a portrait of this 28-year-old adventurer.
