Starting a Business The Richard Branson Way

“It’s not about knowIng how to make a lot of money, It’s about knowIng what people need and provIdIng It for them.”

Wise words from Virgin boss Richard Branson at a recent speaking engagement, and easy to say when you’ve already made a lot of money, but with his track record of success, they are worth heeding if you are planning to start up your own enterprise, even on a small scale. Where do you start? Not with huge profits in mind; that’s the surest way of making none. Working out what’s needed and finding the best way of delivering it is no guarantee of wealth either, but it is the basis of good business in every sense of the word.

CreatIve fundIng Entrepreneurs are always worrying about where to get the money to start a business, but Branson never had any. So to get his first enterprise, a student magazine, off the ground, he sold advertising space and got the money in up front to cover the printing and material costs and get the magazine published.

be smart wIth Cash flow With his record business, he set up a mail order outfit, posted flyers outside the music venues and then went haggling with other record retailers to get the discounted stock he needed to turn a profit. Cash flow is important, but finding creative ways of driving it is even more so, was the moral of the tale.

dIsh out the dutIes Don’t try to do everything yourself, was another nugget of advice. Learn how to delegate and hand off to people who are better than you at handling the various roles and responsibilities

that come with running a business. You have to be brave, find good people to do your job, and step aside as often as you can, which then leaves you free to plan your next business, he said.

you Can’t wIn them all His ethos of shaking up the corporates by doing things better worked for Virgin Atlantic and its challenge to BA, but not for Virgin Cola, which came up against brand leader Coca Cola who literally bought them off the shelves. That was another tough business lesson to learn; some you win, some you lose.

do good busIness While it’s true that Branson made his fortune by being just as ruthless and determined than his competitors, from his humble entrepreneurial beginnings to the creation of a corporate empire, he never lost sight of his goal of business as a force for good. He says: “If you are just starting out in business, or are running a small company already you have a great opportunity to do business differently and put people and our planet at the centre of what you do. It makes good business sense, and if you do good, have fun, then the money will come”. Fearlessness, resilience, self belief, and generosity, stood Virgin’s founder in good stead, and if they take a leaf out of his book, the next generation of entrepreneurs could be awesome.

IN THE HEAD’S STUDY

N

estling in 73 acres of ‘stunning and striking’ landscape on the Hampshire / Berkshire border is St Neot’s Preparatory School, where Loci Pannum had the opportunity to speak with the person using these adjectives; the new Headmaster, Jerry Gear. Jerry started at St Neot’s last September, and was attracted by the opportunities he could see in the extensive grounds. Having previously been the Head at two urban schools in Hendon and Hertfordshire, Jerry feels privileged to be at the helm of an academic institution with a unique position and unrivalled site. It is hard to argue with these sentiments as you travel along the tree lined drive to the old house which has been there since circa. 1860 St Neot’s is not only a Preparatory School; it also has a thriving nursery where children as young as 3 months attend Tiny Tuskers before advancing on to Tuskers. Overall there are 330 pupils educated in the School including up to 36 weekly / flexi boarders who enjoy their ‘extended sleepovers’ in the very modern boarding house. In the past year Jerry has overseen the introduction of a mountain bike track which also encompasses a half loop obstacle course. Continuing on the fitness theme, there are plans to extend the existing adventure playgrounds, to include low ropes, a zip wire and an assault course! Future ambitions also include plans to erect a purpose built Sports Hall. For those not quite so adventurous, the school hopes to introduce chick¬ens to the campus, providing pupils with the opportunity to care for them and to collect and sell the eggs produced. While still promoting the value of team sports, over the past couple of years the school has established a Sports Enrichment Program for those who are more comfortable in non team sports. Pupils have the choice of mountain biking around Bramshill Woods, rock climbing, archery, fencing and even

shooting! There is something for everyone and no excuse not to get involved in some form of activity. Aside from the sports activities, the school provides an excellent all round education for pupils of mixed ability, along with a huge amount of pastoral care. Over the last 6 years pupils have attained 64 scholarships in academia, art, music, sports and all round abilities, with 50% of all pupils going on to Wellington College, Bearwood College, Bradfield College and Lord Wandsworth.

Holiday care is provided for 50 weeks of the year from Tiny Tuskers and St Neot’s have just teamed up with Super Camps (www.supercamps.co.uk) to provide multi activity day camps for 4-14 year olds throughout all the school holidays. If you would like to see St Neot’s for yourself the next Open Day is 29th September - all children are welcome and a crèche will be available. Alternatively contact admissions on 0118 9739650 to arrange an appointment with Jerry and a tour of the school. This is very much a school on the move, in more ways than one – it believes the important things are to ensure that pupils are motivated to learn and to help them find the right secondary school for their skills and strengths. Jerry sums St Neot’s up in three words; Happy, Caring and Exciting. (C) 2012 Loci Pannum

In the garden....

Come rain, come shine By jane jordan

W

e live in interesting weather, to misquote the proverb, from drought to flood and back again within weeks. In March we rushed out with our shorts on only to rush back in again in search of the waterproofs with April’s soggy arrival. Many areas were flooded as rainwater ran off hard ground into rivers. Such weather extremes are predicted to become more common in our climate. As the current hosepipe ban shows at the same time as demand for water is growing its supply cannot always be guaranteed. It’s clear that we need to think differently about how we use and manage water both in the house and the garden. Planting for drought has become fashionable and will certainly reduce the amount of water needed but many gardens don’t have the right site conditions and we don’t all want

lavender and rock roses. Another option is to consider a ‘rain garden’. Nigel Dunnett’s garden at the Chelsea Flower Show this year shows that such gardens can look amazing as well as being functional. The idea is that the garden captures, channels, diverts and soaks up water rather than letting the surplus run off into the drainage system. Typically it could include a number of components, such as: • storm-water planters (above-ground plating containers that intercept water from the roof) • green roofs (layers of living vegetation installed on the roof that reduce water run off) • rain barrels and water butts for above-ground water storage • rain harvesting reservoirs for below ground waterstorage

(C) 2012 Loci Pannum

• ponds/pools • gullies and rills • porous groundcover, such as gravel, which helps absorption of rainwater • planted sunken infiltration areas (where the water can seep away and be taken up by plants). In periods of low rainfall some of these components will be dry and the planted areas will look no different from any other area of the garden but in wet periods the whole system comes to life with running water. You don’t have to involve the whole garden to make a difference and not all Echinacea Purpurea elements have to be included; budget, site, soil conditions, runoff levels and how you want to use the garden all need to be considered. But even one or two elements can help and combining two or more multiplies the benefits. You could simply disconnect your downpipes and channel the water into storm-water planters that overflow gradually into gullies, or install a green roof on the shed. Planting is key in any garden but the more diverse the plants in a rain garden, the better it will work. A well-designed rain garden will not be submerged for long periods and even in long drought periods there will be some moisture still available

deeper down so there is a wide choice of perennials, grasses, shrubs and trees that would cope with such conditions. Unlike some eco friendly schemes, creating a rain garden need not be that complicated; there can be a lot less hard landscaping involved and expensive water features are not needed to enjoy the movement of water through the garden. Best of all, with a rain garden you can feel good about doing your bit while the garden does the work for you.

W

hat are your strengths? A simple enough question and one which we either find difficult to answer in any meaningful way, or we talk about what we are good at. It could be argued The Curse of Mediocrity is all around us. In our education systems, we see it in the perennial quest to have every student being good at every subject. They are not. At work we see it in the flatlines of competency models, where everyone is expected to be good at everything. They are not, and this being so, we then focus on what is wrong or not working and try and fix the weaknesses. But strengths coaching is about identifying what you are good at, what energises or de-energises you and which you use frequently or not so much. The energy part is crucial, we can still be good at doing something but it may be de-energising. For example, you may be very good at completing forms and documents because this has been part of your job for years, but completing all that detail may not be enjoyable or energise you. These strengths are known as ‘learned behaviours’ and like anything we have learned in life we can change our thinking. Recent studies in neuroscience have demonstrated that neuroplasticity of the brain exists and we can, with help and coaching, change longheld beliefs. The really exciting part for clients is the discovery of their ‘unrealised strengths’. These are the areas which provide energy, are performed well but just not used frequently enough. These are the strengths which, when developed, will propel an individual forward, whether they are pursuing a personal goal or looking to improve in a business environment. These are the x-factor which will movesomeone from average to A*.

From Mediocrity to A* Mike Peates discusses "playing to your strengths" In addition to looking at the individual strengths, we will also look at the strength families and whether there is an imbalance between them. For example, the ‘communicating’ family will distinguish how best to communicate with your family, friends, colleagues or clients. If your strength is ‘Spotlight’ your best way of communicating is probably verbally to a group, if it is ‘Scribe’ then you are stronger at writing or emailing. Strengths Coaching is all about the old maxim ‘play to your strengths’, it helps individuals identify what their strengths are, which ones energise them and which are not being utilised enough and to plan how to use them going forward. This enables the individual to perform better, increase their own well-being and those around them. In a team environment this is magnified when all the members are utilising the strengths they are not only good at, but really energise them as well! Just imagine the business performance levels. In addition to Strength identification, we will have the opportunity to review your areas of weakness. However, whilst it is advisable to work on these it can only be in addition to working on your strengths and not instead of.

If you are interested in moving from the Curse of Mediocrity to A*, or would like me to undertake a presentation of Strengths contact Mike Peates via www.mjpcoaching.co.uk (C) 2012 Loci Pannum

ith Heston Blumenthal following in the footsteps of Constance Fry and Rosemarie Hume and creating a cold chicken dish fit for a Royal celebration, it seems appropriate to share the variation that I make.

The spiciness of the curry is complemented nicely by the tangy lime marmalade and as those who have ever eaten cold takeaway curry will attest, the flavour enhances as it chills. You will need: 4 chicken breasts (in strips) 1 chicken stock cube (dissolved in 450ml water) Zest and juice of 1 lemon 1 tbs vegetable oil 1 small onion 1 clove of garlic 1 tbs curry paste (mild or medium) 1 tbs tomato puree 2 tbs lime marmalade 6 tbs mayonnaise 200g virtually fat free fromage frais Toasted flaked almonds To make it, place the chicken, chicken stock and lemon juice in a casserole dish and bring to boil. Simmer for 5-10 mins until tender. Drain, reserving ¼ pint of stock. Chill the chicken. Heat oil in a separate pan and add onion and garlic and fry gently for 3 mins; add tomato puree and curry paste and cook for a further 1 minute; add marmalade and reserved stock and simmer until well reduced. Chill. Fold lemon zest, mayonnaise, fromage frais and chicken into stock mixture and finally garnish with almonds. (C) 2012 Loci Pannum

Games at work With the Olympics starting soon, Anne Illingworth discusses the Employment Rights Act 2012

M

ost people are either employees or employers. Those who are not are often share homes, family ties or friendships with those who are. Like it or not employment law impacts upon us all. This year we are hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games from 27 July 2012 to 9 September 2012. Large shops will be able to open for extended Sunday hours during the Games. who do you know who runs a shop or works In a shop?

The Sunday Trading (London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games) Act 2012 suspends restrictions under the Sunday Trading Act 1994 on large shops' Sunday trading hours during the Games. It therefore applies for eight weeks, from Sunday 22 July to Sunday 9 September 2012 inclusive. The effect of the Act is that certain shops, which are currently only able to trade for a limited period on Sundays, will not be subject to those restrictions during the Games. There was concern that shop workers in shops affected by the 2012 Games would not have time to opt out of Sunday working before the Games started. Therefore, the 2012 Act amends the Employment Rights Act 1996 to temporarily reduce the usual notice period for opting out of Sunday working from three months to the longer of two months or the period from the date notice is given until Saturday 21 July 2012. If a lesser period is referred to in the employment contract the lesser period will apply. A "shop" is defined to include any premises where any retail trade or business is carried on, including barbers, hairdressers, auction houses and hire companies (except those that hire to trades or businesses).

Under the 2012 Act:•

If an employee already has the right not to work on a Sunday then that right is unaffected by the Act, unless the employee wishes to opt-in to working on Sundays. For other employees who work on Sundays or may be required to work on Sundays there is the right to apply to opt-out of unrestricted working hours. It is not possible for a person who only works on a Sunday to opt out of Sunday working.

Where a worker has the right to opt out of Sunday working, the employer must give them a written statement explaining the steps they must follow to serve an "opting-out notice" to establish the right not to work on Sundays. This statement must be given within two months of the worker becoming entitled to opt-out and must be in a prescribed form. If the employer fails to provide this statement, then the period between the worker serving an "opting-out notice" and it taking effect is reduced to one month. In general Employers anticipate that during the Games there will be an increase in requests for time off, and in sickness absence, and that this combined with disruption for those travelling in and around the city will reduce productivity and cash flow. Considerate employees and employers will need to plan ahead. Anna Illingworth anna.illingworth@rowberrymorris.co.uk
