The Flanders Field American Cemetery and Memorial in Belgium occupies a 6.2-acre site. Masses of graceful trees and shrubbery frame the burial area and screen it from passing traffic. At the ends of the paths leading to three of the corners of the cemetery are circular retreats, with benches and urns. At this peaceful site rest 368 of our military dead, most of whom gave their lives in liberating the soil of Belgium in World War I. Their headstones are aligned in four symmetrical areas around the white stone chapel that stands in the center of the cemetery. http://www.abmc.gov/cemeteries/cemeteries/ff.php While working with HALS, our team divdied the work of the cemetery according to sections. Prior to internship, the site was visited and documented through the Laer Point Cloud database. Each team member played a significant role to the success of the current plan. Frequent meetings were implemented to ensure documentation was to the standards of the National Park Service. 11

PERSHING PARK Washington, DC

Located at 14th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., Pershing Park is a memorial park dedicated to General John J. “Black Jack Pershing. Pershing Park was successful upon completion with strong elements that daily users enjoyed. However, the site disadvantages made the park become unutilized over the years causing passers to seek other locations for enjoyment. Finding new ways to engage users to Pershing Park with activities AND amenities will give it a strong foundation once again.

Final Composition

The final composition map is a combination of physical and cultural attibutes. By merging the two maps, a recreational complex is able to be accurately located.

This program requires to be suited at least 50 feet away from the stream. Preferred developable area 100 to 500 feet for desirable recreation al area. Greater than 500 feet is most suitable.

Primary Path Seconday Path

Identifying opportunities and constraints in Vera Weinbach Cope Park helps us understand what implementations can be determined for the community. Diverse housing, walkable streets creat livable neighborhoods. Perserving and safeguarding this neighborhood subcharacter within the region is at the up most importance to its residents.

Woodlands cover approximately 586 acres of Briers Mill Run, which is 22% of the forested area. Increasing vegetation at Vera Cope Weinbach Park will benefit the community as a whole by increasing property vaules, and livable communites.

[Process]

This spatial diagram depicts programs, community buildings, entry, and parking on site. 26

Placing community building in relation to parking lot and entrance.

Three major roads run through Briers Mill Run, Capital Beltway, Baltimore Washington Parkway, and Annapolis Road. Imprevious surfaces total 87.6 acerage while all other roads make up 602 acres.

Currently the surrounding buildings are composed of flat and gable roof tops. Implementing green roofs on flat surfaces will reduce storm water run off into the local stream and road.

Locating active & passive use in relation to vegetation.

The redesign of Mckeldin Mall at University of Maryland will focus on the lawn itself in front of McKeldin library and administration building. Landscape architecture students collaborated with students from the anthropology department and information studies college to present reasearch findings and concepts to the University Facilities Council. Individual teams focused on the mall itself, and Interstitial Spaces areas on campus that need revitalization.
