WELCOME TO THE 2021–22 SEASON Welcome to the 2021–22 ArtPower season. After a year of streaming offerings and digital residencies, it will be amazing to return to live performances in the theaters. We have all missed the interaction between artist and audience, artist and student, and audience and audience. Now it seems almost unbelievable that we will be back sharing the same space and thrilling to the same performances at the same time. This season we aim to honor our long-standing commitments to some artists, invite back favorites, and introduce new artists that we know you will want to hear and see more of in the coming years. We are proud to be partnering with the Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at UC San Diego and to be bringing La Santa Cecilia to campus for a UC San Diego community-only conversation and concert in celebration of the University’s first LatinX History Month. We’ll be welcoming back Ronald K. Brown, one of the nation’s most celebrated choreographers, and his company EVIDENCE to San Diego for the first time in nearly 15 years. And of course, we cannot wait to hear the exciting conclusion of the Beethoven Cycle from the Ariel Quartet. We are looking forward to reengaging with all of you with new vigor that will be inevitable from the communal experience of sharing art together. We are excited to reinvigorate and reimagine the performing arts community we all love. Finally, I want to acknowledge UC San Diego whose highest priority has been keeping all of us safe throughout the pandemic. Know that we will be continuously monitoring the latest developments, and ask you to kindly abide by the guidance posted prior to each performance. Jordan Peimer Executive Director, ArtPower at UC San Diego

A NOTE FROM THE CHANCELLOR The arts are a dynamic part of UC San Diego’s transformative interdisciplinary environment—they ignite our creativity, raise cultural awareness, and promote a sense of belonging. ArtPower fosters this barrier-breaking innovation through inspired programming in music, dance, and student and community engagement activities. Thank you for supporting ArtPower and our extraordinary campus. Pradeep K. Khosla Chancellor, UC San Diego

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT Through partnerships with academic departments, faculty, and local organizations, we offer meaningful engagement programs that connect our artists to audiences of all ages in the most inspiring and transformative ways. ON-CAMPUS JOBS

ArtPower works with a bright team of undergraduate student employees during the academic year, teaching them skills in arts marketing, outreach, programming, and production. These future professionals learn firsthand what it takes to execute a performing arts season.

MASTER CLASSES

ArtPower offers opportunities for those future artists among us to get personal instruction from some of the best in their field. Taught by guest artists, master classes provide that spark of inspiration to continue on the path to artistic excellence. ArtPower is proud to collaborate with the UC San Diego Department of Theatre and Dance and Department of Music.

JOIN THE ARTPOWER COMMUNITY OF DONORS— MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Art has the power to enhance and transform lives. Studies confirm that exposure to the arts increases academic performance, improves critical thinking skills, boosts empathy, and makes people happier. These lifelong benefits are what we want to cultivate in UC San Diego students. Since our inception in 2003, more than 32,000 undergraduate and graduate students have attended ArtPower performances. Support ArtPower today and help us stimulate curiosity and expand world views by commissioning new works and collaborating with artists across cultures. Ticket sales and university funds make up a fraction of our annual budget. Annual gifts sustain ArtPower by funding diverse and stimulating performances, student-engagement activities, and other dynamic programs such as the ArtPower Student Marketing and Production Program which is helping to build the pipeline of future arts leaders and activists.
