ABOUT THE PROGRAM Animalik is a collaboration with filmmakers from around the world; it is a series of short animated films from different periods and featuring different techniques, all with live music specifically composed for them. The premise behind Animalik is that it is a living project constantly evolving with new films and new music composed for them. Animalik was born in 2013 in collaboration with Mexico’s National Film Archive (Cineteca Nacional) and was performed in theaters and festivals throughout Mexico. Animalik II was launched in 2014 and has been performed at more than 70 concerts in Mexico, the United States, and Latin America. As resident artist at the National Film Archive, Mal’akh premiered Animalik XXX, a series of short animated films with erotic content, with a sold out nine-concert season.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS Mal’Akh is a project created by the multi-laureate Mexican composer Felipe Perez Santiago and drummer and sampler artist Juan Antonio Arévalo. Founded in 2011 with the premise of having a state of the art and eclectic ensemble with a flexible instrumentation, Mal’Akh defines itself as a meeting point between different musical genres and artistic disciplines always looking for collaborations that could enrich their work and creative process. The music of Mal’Akh originated from the integration of acoustic instruments with electronic resources such as samplers, pre-recorded tracks, rhythm programming, and live processing, to obtain an eclectic sound that combines tradition, avant-garde, folklore, and elements of contemporary music, rock, free jazz, and improvisation. In 2012 they released their first album Nectar, produced by the GRAMMY winner Camilo Froideval, with collaborations by Mexican artists, such as pop singer Ely Guerra, jazz saxophone player Dan Zlotnik, experimental guitarist Alex Otaola, as well as international artists like Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) and Jeffrey Zeigler (former cellist of Kronos Quartet). Together they have performed in major festivals in Mexico, the United States, and Latin America. In December 2012—along with saxophone quartet Anacrusax and Mexican singers Armando Manzanero, Tania Libertad, and Encarnación Vazquez—Mal’Akh Ensemble was commissioned to perform at Mexico’s National Sound Archive’s fourth anniversary concert. That same year they were awarded a prize and a grant to support their projects at the National Institute of Fine Arts (Mexico), which included a sold out concert at the Palacio de Bellas Artes. With support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, the ensemble performed several concerts in New York City in 2013 presenting new music from Mexico. In 2014 they received a commission from the Mexico City government to make a piece with Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra, to celebrate 50 years of the second section of the National Park of Mexico City. They were also the official ensemble for the tribute concert to commemorate the centenary of novelist and Nobel Prize laureate Octavio Paz at the National Sound Archive. Also in 2014, they received a grant from Ibermúsicas in Argentina to travel to Costa Rica to represent Mexico during the 75th anniversary celebration of the National University of Costa Rica.
