WELCOME TO THE 2018–19 ARTPOWER SEASON We are proud to be celebrating ArtPower’s 15th anniversary in the 2018–19 season! We have learned so much in the past 15 years, and we are still growing and still discovering meaningful ways to connect our students and the community to the best artists in the world. Inspired by the UC San Diego campus, which encourages us all to break from the ordinary, we strive to continue to bring you performing arts experiences that are filled with innovation and that broaden our awareness of worlds beyond our own. As part of our anniversary celebration, we are elated to be able to expand our dance series to include evenings by four diverse choreographers who bring vastly different movement styles and sources of inspiration to the stage. This season we embark on a four year-long celebration of Beethoven’s legacy with a String Quartet Cycle to mark his sestercentennial in 2020. The Global Music series takes us across the African continent, highlighting artists whose work reflects some of the rich traditions that continue to influence American culture. Our Special Events tackle timely issues facing our country, such as gun violence and flaws in the criminal justice system. And woven through many of our series are important stories of seminal figures in black history and dispatches from the black experience in America. The ArtPower staff and I love bringing the work of a wide variety of talented people to you every year, and we are sincerely grateful to the many people who support this program. You have helped us make these past 15 years of incredible performing arts possible, and we look forward to many more seasons together with you! See you in the theater. Jordan Peimer Executive Director, ArtPower at UC San Diego

The Seshen

Thur. Sept. 27, 2018 7 pm Sun God Lawn Free UC San Diego student–only event as part of UC San Diego Welcome Week “It’s always cause for celebration when there’s new music from The Seshen.”—Afropunk The Seshen is a San Francisco–based six-piece band led by singer/lyricist Lalin St. Juste and bassist/producer Akiyoshi Ehara. Their forward-thinking sound combines synthesizers, drum machines, and live percussion to create an innovative fusion of R&B, synth-pop, and electronic music. Their unique alchemy of seemingly disparate sounds has led fans and critics alike to describe the band as defying categorization. The Seshen’s latest release, Flames & Figures, was two years in the making and marks an evolution in their distinctive sound. Narrated by St. Juste’s lyrical stream of consciousness, Flames & Figures explores themes of femininity, power, illusion, and loss, as she draws on both her personal experiences and the world of her imagination. 8980: Book of Travelers Wed. Oct. 10, 2018 8 pm The Loft Section A: $30 | Section B: $23 | General Admission: $18 | UCSD Student: $9 Bites & Beverages “A star of New York’s new-music scene.”—Los Angeles Times The morning after the 2016 presidential election, singer-songwriter Gabriel Kahane took a two-week train trip across the United States with no phone or internet, embracing 8,980 miles of monkish Amtrak existence. The result is this hymn to the analog intimacy of American rail culture as antidote to the fragmentation and efficiency of modern life. Alone at the piano, Kahane draws from dining-car conversations he had with dozens of strangers—cowboys, postmasters, religious luddites, software engineers—to sing of his own upended assumptions about the body politic as revealed through his unplugged railroad exile.

His latest album, The Mugician, examines our troubled times through a far wider lens than any one tragedy. Sweeping and cinematic, the music draws on elements of jazz, classical, rock, blues, and hip-hop to create something uniquely modern, unmistakably American, and triumphantly cohesive—thanks to Harrold’s virtuosic skill as a trumpeter and songwriter, and his relentlessly optimistic belief in brighter days to come. DANCE / U.S.A.

David Roussève/ REALITY Halfway to Dawn

Fri. Nov. 9, 2018 8 pm Mandeville Auditorium Section A: $43 | Section B: $35 | Section C: $25 | UCSD Student: $9 Post-Performance ArtTalk “Shattering dance/theater.”—New York Times Choreographed, written, and directed by David Roussève, Halfway to Dawn is an evening-length work weaving dance, music, sound, video, and text to uncover the deeper ”truths” of African American, gay jazz composer Billy Strayhorn’s life (1915–67) while also creating a dialogue on urgent social issues of our own time. The work is danced to a score of Strayhorn and Duke Ellington songs, from raise-the-roof jazz anthems to emotion-laden ballads. Halfway to Dawn intersects fact, conjecture, comment, abstraction, and fantasy to create an abstract portrait of Ellington’s most important, though largely unknown, collaborator. Founded in 1988, David Roussève/REALITY creates expressionistic dance/theater works that combine the accessibility, grit, and passion of African American traditional and pop cultures with the challenging compositional structures of avant-garde dance and theater in order to explore socially-charged, immensely relevant, and often spiritual themes. The charismatic young chanteuse is a native of Dakar, Senegal, and lived the first 13 years of her life in Nouakchott, Mauritania, in Northwest Africa. De Barros’s creative heart, however, lies in the culturally rich land of Cabo Verde, a former Portuguese colony located 350 miles off the coast of Senegal, the birthplace of her parents and her godmother, Cesária Évora, also known as the “barefoot diva.” It’s the island’s incredible melting pot of music—which includes everything from African and Portuguese to Argentine and Cuban influences—that has always inspired de Barros to set her heart on home. His Grammy-nominated album When You Wish Upon a Star features his arrangements and interpretations of music for film and television. “An invigorating experience . . . Sheer visual beauty.”— Washington Post Founded in 2008, Beijing Dance Theater is led by its choreographer, Wang Yuanyuan, together with visual artists Tan Shaoyuan and Hanjiang. Born and raised in Beijing, Wang is one of China’s leading modern dance choreographers. She prides herself on being rooted in Chinese traditions, while at the same time producing innovative, authentic, and thought-provoking contemporary dance works for the world stage. The evening program includes selections from Hamlet—which explores Hamlet’s psychological landscape from a fresh perspective and confronts his melancholy, his compassion for humanity, and his doubt in the face of death and destruction; Wild Grass—renowned for the alluring fusion of Chinese tradition with a fiercely modern sensibility, and adapted from the poetry collection written by Chinese literary giant Lu Xun in 1927; and Crossing—which traces the struggles of the individual dancers to mark the emptiness, and sets lyrical movement against the stark realities of the space and sound. Dedicated to revealing and exploring the inherent complexities of street and social dance forms, Ephrat Asherie Dance (EAD) creates original contemporary work that straddles dance and theater. EAD makes its West Coast debut with Odeon, an original dance work for seven dancers and four musicians. The performance marks the second collaboration between sisterand-brother team Ephrat and Ehud Asherie (choreographer and musical director, respectively). Odeon is set to the music of Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth, known for mixing early 20thcentury romantic music with samba and other popular Afro-Brazilian rhythms. The piece delves into what happens when you bring together the extended family of street and club dances— including breaking, hip-hop, house, and vogue—remix them, pick them apart, and challenge them to inhabit unfamiliar spatial and choreographic contexts. A native of Los Angeles, Grammy-nominated drummer, singer, and bandleader Sammy Miller has become known for his unique maturity and relentless focus on making music that feels good. Upon completing his master’s at Juilliard, Miller formed his ensemble, the Congregation. As a band, they are focused on sharing the power of community through their music—joyful jazz, a style that enriches, entertains, and uplifts. Independently, the band members have performed and recorded with notable artists, including Wynton Marsalis, Lady Gaga, and Queen Latifah, at venues such as the White House, Lincoln Center, and the Hollywood Bowl. As the Congregation, they have opted to stick together to create globally conscious music with the intention to spread joy throughout the world. SPONSOR | Jack Lampl

SPECIAL EVENT / U.S.A.

Dahlak Brathwaite

Spiritrials

Artwork Courtesy of Artist

Thurs. May 9, 2019 8 pm Price Center East Ballroom General Admission: $25 | UCSD Student: $9 A young African American man is stopped by the police without clear cause. Again and again and again. The tenth stop leads to entanglements with the courts, jail, and attorneys, with potentially life-changing results. In Spiritrials, addiction, religion, and the law intersect in a court-ordered drug rehabilitation program. Dahlak Brathwaite’s incisive humor transforms a chilling personal story into a vital performance that layers character-driven storytelling and poetic verse with original songs to create a hybrid hip-hop drama, accompanied by beats from DJ Dion Decibels. A virtuosic and timely exploration of the criminal justice system, Spiritrials chronicles the journey of Brathwaite’s own criminalization along with his struggle to be vindicated and decriminalized in the eyes of the law and society. The piece works through the personal shame of criminal stigmatization to examine the factors—both internal and external—that have misplaced him in what appears to be a cultural rite of passage. “A fresh and innovative show. . . . When ETM: Double Down is rocking, Dorrance Dance is one big band.”—New York Times A collaboration between “one of the most imaginative tap choreographers working today,” (New Yorker) Michelle Dorrance and company member Nicholas Van Young, ETM: Double Down celebrates the origins of tap dance, in a contemporary context, by using electronic trigger boards. Turning the entire stage into an instrument, the score is not just danced to but danced by the company. ETM, which stands for electronic tap music, features eight dancers and six musicians exploring acoustic and digitally produced sounds. Founded in 2011 by artistic director and 2015 MacArthur Fellow Michelle Dorrance, Dorrance Dance is an award-winning tap dance company based out of New York City. The company’s work aims to honor tap dance’s uniquely beautiful history in a new, dynamic, and compelling context; not by stripping the form of its tradition, but by pushing it—rhythmically, technically, and conceptually. The company’s inaugural performance garnered a Bessie Award for “blasting open our notions of tap,” and the company continues its passionate commitment to expanding the audience of tap dance. ENGAGE WITH THE ARTS Through partnerships with academic departments, faculty, and local organizations, we offer meaningful engagement programs that connect our artists to audiences of all ages in the most inspiring and transformative ways.

UCSD Student Programs Internships

ArtPower works with a bright team of undergraduate student interns during the academic year, teaching them skills in arts marketing, outreach, curating, and production. These future professionals learn firsthand what it takes to execute a performing arts season.

Master Classes

ArtPower offers opportunities for those future artists among us to get personal instruction from some of the best in their field. Taught by guest musicians, dancers, and choreographers, master classes provide that spark of inspiration to continue on the path to artistic excellence. ArtPower is proud to collaborate with the UC San Diego Department of Theatre and Dance and Department of Music.

CREATE A LASTING LEGACY WITH ARTPOWER

HERE’S HOW Make an Estate Gift in Support of ArtPower

Join the York Society at UC San Diego. Planned or estate gifts carry your philanthropic impact into the next generation. Donors who make provisions for ArtPower in their estate become members of the York Society, an esteemed group of UC San Diego philanthropists whose giving ensures the long-term greatness of the university. With the help of the UC San Diego Gift Planning Office, we can guide you through the process and make your vision for your legacy a reality.

Make an Endowment Gift

To support stability and long-range programming, ArtPower needs a reliable stream of operating income. Please consider establishing your own endowment to enable us to do that or support one of the following endowment funds. 42

The Hamburger Chamber Music Endowment Fund, founded by Robert and Sonia Hamburger in 1996, provides crucial stability for ArtPower’s Chamber Music series. The Joan Jordan Bernstein Student Engagement Endowment Fund, established by Joan J. Bernstein in 2017 and with gifts from the ArtPower community of donors, provides critical annual support for ArtPower’s student engagement activities.

Leveraging your Contribution through Employer Matching Benefits

Many companies offer matching gift programs that make their employees’ charitable gift contributions go further. We are grateful to our corporate partners who provide this important resource. Visit matchinggifts.com/ucsd to see if your employer participates.
