artprize voting Open voting for ArtPrize Nine begins on September 20, 2017. During Round 1, all 1,346 entries are eligible to win yours and the category jurors’ votes. Five finalists are determined in each artwork category by your votes, and five finalists per category are determined by the category jurors. During Round 2, from the 40 finalists, your votes will determine the top entry in each category and the Public Vote Grand Prize. From those same 40 finalists, the category jurors will pick the top entry in each category while the Grand Prize jurors will select one entry for the Juried Grand Prize. Learn more at artprize.org/awards.

welcome to artprize nine “Art is the most intense mode of individualism the world has ever known.” —Oscar Wilde

It takes courage to move from thought to expression. While expression is intensely individual, the creative act bears an emotional gravity that is universally understood. ArtPrize Nine is about celebrating the individual creative act, and the courage it takes to make a mark. The paint swash and graphic elements of the ArtPrize Nine Poster and event design pay tribute to the thrilling and terrifying moment when an artist makes that first mark. We can all relate to the moment; fear and insecurity plead with the conscious self to step away, to play it safe. But then we commit to the creative act not because we have resolved all doubts, but because we have the courage to act in spite of them. Artists from 47 countries and 41 states have prepared 1,346 works of art – each with an intention, a story and a reason it was created for you to experience. ArtPrize happens due to a million unique instances of independent, civic collaboration. You will see it in artists and venues, in volunteers and sponsors, in partners like the City of Grand Rapids, and in every vote that is cast for art. Welcome to ArtPrize Nine. We hope you will find yourself delighted, moved, challenged and inspired by the connections and collisions from the endless array of courageous creative acts.

T H E A R T P R I Z E M I S S I O N: ArtPrize is an international art competition and festival open to all and determined equally by public vote and expert jury. ArtPrize encourages critical discourse, celebrates artists, transforms urban space and promotes cultural understanding. Find out more at artprize.org/about

ArtPrize Nine Neighborhoods Find art everywhere!

CENTER CITY

W ESTSIDE

In the heart of downtown Grand Rapids, Center City—the vibrant core of West Michigan’s largest community—promises once again to be one of the most energetic and bustling areas of ArtPrize. With Monroe Center, Rosa Parks Circle and the Center City HUB, this neighborhood features a variety of engaging venues and exciting views.

The Westside neighborhood provides a glimpse back into time in a bustling and growing neighborhood. Grand Rapids’ history comes to life through the restored 1928 carousel in the Grand Rapids Public Museum, the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad Bridge (a.k.a. The Blue Bridge) built in 1892, and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum. Westside has a trove of new and long-standing businesses, restaurants and nightlife hot-spots.

HEA RTSIDE Heartside is home to many galleries, studios, non-profit organizations and night life. Year-round, the Avenue for the Arts connects and presents public art events and markets for all of Heartside. The neighborhood is also home to medical industry leaders like Mercy Health Saint Mary’s and Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital; affirming the area as Grand Rapids’ premier destination for creativity, culture and care.

HILLSIDE Heralded as one of the nation’s oldest, grandest and most architecturally intriguing neighborhoods, Heritage Hill boasts Michigan’s largest and best preserved collection of 19th and 20th century homes. Spanning every style of American architecture, Heritage Hill is an open-air gallery of mansions once housing the lumber lords, teachers, government officials and industry titans who shaped the area during Grand Rapids' rise to fame as America’s Furniture City.

SAT E L L I T E V E N U E S ArtPrize venues have always been located within a three square mile area in downtown Grand Rapids, with one notable exception: Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. Meijer Gardens was a can’t-miss cultural attraction in West Michigan long before ArtPrize began, and we’re happy to bend the boundary rule to include them. In 2015 and 2016, we made a similar exception for SiTE:LAB's Rumsey Street Project, just south of the Wealthy St. venue boundary. Rumsey Street returns as a venue in 2017, curated by neighborhood residents to honor and document the narratives of the community, maintain cultural and historical elements of the neighborhood, and more. We're also excited to welcome the Gerald R. Ford International Airport as a third satellite venue this year, allowing visitors from all over the world to experience - and vote for - the work of ArtPrize Artists on their first and last stop in West Michigan. See all the satellite venues on pg. 44.

M O N RO E N O R T H Located in and around the Belknap Lookout neighborhood, Monroe North was named after two prominent Grand Rapids Icons: Charles E. Belknap, the first commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America, mayor and U.S. Congressman; and the area’s unique vantage point atop Belknap Hill, a towering 160 ft. bluff overlooking Grand Rapids. Today the neighborhood is the center of the city’s water supply boasting a 6-million gallon reservoir servicing the Greater Grand Rapids region. A RT PR IZ E N E IGH B OR HO ODS

THE POWER

OF ART Art has the power to inspire, challenge, inform and transform us at any age. And in Grand Rapids, it has the power to draw over 400,000 global visitors for ArtPrize, the world’s largest competition of art in its many forms. Through our sponsorship, we share in the pride of Grand Rapids, and celebrate the role that arts play in making our community more inviting, interesting and connected.
