Mission Drawings on Brown Paper
Missions PostI’d like to share this sample of student work from a fourth grade class today. I think the drawing guides from my California Mission Book and the brown graph paper are a powerful combination that bring out the best in what students are able to do each year. They never fail to amaze me! For those that are interested, I buy a 12″ x 18″ warm brown paper online, and then use my printer to create a light grid. It is dark enough to see, but light enough to later cover up with colored pencils.
Mila’s Monster I brought out monster painting for kinders last week, and I was reminded how much I love how kids draw them. Something about big heads and pointy teeth are just too cute! Mila is in third grade now, but back when she was in first, she painted one of my favorite, shown here. If it looks familiar, it’s because it’s still being featured on the Strathmore kids line of fingerpainting paper. So proud of you Mila!
Amsterdam Buildings
My students have drawn lots of traditional American style homes, so now I’d like them to try something different. Specifically, Amsterdam style buildings. They have very different profiles and details, not to mention water canal surroundings. Here’s a tutorial that includes many of these details, without getting too intricate.

MLK Art from Gaithersbury, MA I thought I’d share this really nice email I recently received. I love how creative the students got with a simple posterized print of Martin Luther King, Jr., and thought others might find it inspiring too.I run a nonprofit called Color A Heart and we teach free art lessons to low-income kids along with other activities. I just wanted to say thanks for all your awesome art project ideas! We just recently used the free template of MLK to color in with the kids. Email
