HELLO PERTH! Your summer smorgasbord of entertainment is ready to roll bigger, better, bolder and brighter. In 1947 some theatre companies not included in the first Edinburgh International Arts Festival staged their own program outside it, and a journalist coined the use of ‘fringe’ to describe them. Sixty-six years later, Edinburgh Fringe is the largest, most popular, and well-known arts festival on the planet and over 200 Fringe Festivals are happening around the rest of the world. Perth’s FRINGE WORLD Festival is one of them, and we’re doing our darndest to make sure it's one of the best. Fringe is where anyone can have a go and take part, and where all are welcome. It’s where you can see new talents getting their first break alongside international superstars in a relaxed environment that’s easy on the pocket. It’s one of the reasons Fringes are so popular, lively, fresh, diverse and exciting, no matter what your taste is. Every style you can think of is on offer, and some you never thought possible! Perth has a fast growing reputation on the international Fringe circuit as a place where the people are super friendly and the audiences generous and responsive. It’s why we’re seeing favourite acts returning to us with new shows, and new artists visiting each year alongside the growing mountain of home-grown talent taking part, taking the risk and putting it out there for you. They’re presenting their shows this year in sixty-nine different venues spread across Perth and beyond.
1 These include a swag of novel ‘pop-ups’ brought in from across Australia and Europe, and placed alongside the traditional venues located in and around the Perth Cultural Centre. There's fourtyfive venues in the Perth and Northbridge areas to visit over the festival, all within an easy ten minute walking radius of the train station. We’ve also got some great new Fringe venues happening in other suburbs, which makes your choose-your-own-adventure Fringe Binge all the more exciting and interesting over the month. We can say to you with certainty, it’s going to be... Massively Entertaining. With sincerity, your ever-faithful FRINGE WORLD, Perth, Westralia

Welcome WELCOME TO THE FRINGE WORLD FESTIVAL 2013. The Festival is an important event on the Western Australia arts and culture calendar, running for more than four weeks over summer — 25 January to 24 February. I am very pleased that the State Government supports Fringe World through the Department of Culture and the Arts and Lotterywest. The first full Fringe World Festival was held last year and it is great to see that this year’s festival which is even bigger and better – is able to build on that event’s wonderful success with this exciting program. This year our funding support has increased, with the announcement of a new initiative called Outer Fringe which will see Fringe World tour the regional centres of Albany, Esperance and Geraldton. This will give more West Australians the opportunity to enjoy some of the fresh and diverse acts offered by a fringe festival. Among the range of shows travelling to the regions as part of Outer Fringe is Sydney cabaret The Divine Miss Bette (Albany), Josh Earl v the Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cookbook (Geraldton) and the South African award winning Face the Music (Esperance). Outer Fringe will be presented during and immediately after Fringe World 2013. Investing in events such as Fringe World not only enriches the cultural life of our community but also provides economic benefits for all West Australians. Last year more than 100,000 people attended the festival, injecting more than $7.9million into the local economy. With more than 300 shows on offer, including many in the Perth Cultural Centre, I am sure you will find something that will delight and entertain. I wish the Fringe World Festival all the very best.

Enjoying the Fringe HOW TO USE YOUR GUIDE All of the shows, concerts, exhibitions, events and programs in the Fringe are listed in the guide, arranged alphabetically in their genre. Each genre has its own button icon and titling colours. Underneath the title of the work is the artist, company or producers who are presenting the work. A short description of the work, written by the presenters, is often followed by one liner quotes from previous reviews.
FRINGE WORLD POP UP VENUES & HUBS The De Parel Spiegeltent in the Urban Orchard has been a favourite of fringe audiences since the festival started. This year we’re adding a range of other fantastic pop-up venues including The West Australian Idolize Spiegeltent, The Circus Theatre, The Moon House Tent, The Sun House Tent, The Castello and De Parade Teatro I and De Parade Teatro II, all located in the Perth Cultural Centre. There’s also the Lunar Circus Tent and the Pink Flamingo Tent that are spending the Fringe six stories up with views of the Perth City skyline at the Rooftop Movies venue. These are just some of the 69 different venues where FRINGE WORLD 2013 is happening. The best advice we can give is to try and visit as many of them as possible. Each venue, as much as each show you experience will add to your Fringe adventure, and you can't call yourself a true Fringe Binger till you've visited at least ten of them!
The venue is then listed, with a map reference and the dates and times of the show, the ticket prices, the show duration, the rating, where the show has come from, and whether it’s a local or world premiere. Preview tickets: Take advantage of special low price Preview tickets when you see them. They are industry nights before the full season begins. Some shows also list reduced price tickets for groups so you can get friends and family together and make a night of it. A smiley face icon means the show is good clean fun for the whole family, and we've also made a free icon so you can easily scan the program to identify the freebies. You can find out more about each show on the fringeworld.com.au website. Rating: Each show has been given an age suitability rating. G: These shows are A-OK for eyes and minds of all ages. PG: We recommend audiences high school age and up. 18+: The show is licensed. Restricted 18+: These shows are adults only. Latest info: Remember to check fringeworld.com.au for latest performance information when you make your bookings to be sure all your ducks are lined up...

Fringe World Opening Four-Day Weekend HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY! FRINGE WORLD get's going the night before Australia Day with four days and nights of Fringe goodness in the Perth Cultural Centre (PCC). It's a chance to come in and get a taste of the Fringe in one hit with over 20 different shows happening throughout the PCC each night of the long weekend. Other shows happening in some of the 69 venues in the Fringe also start their seasons on the weekend, and there'll be special $5 tickets to all the opening shows released every 15 mins from the FRINGE WORLD Box Office in the PCC. We've put together some free afternoon and early evening programs on the Saturday and Sunday that are fun for the whole family... including the family pet. (See Pet Photo Booth p19).
There's an Access All Areas (AAA) pass that allows you to explore the historical 'pop up' venues that we've brought in from Europe. There's Silent Disco, scarecrow making workshops, mermaids, a huge steam-punk performance machine called Mechronos, and some free late night parties in the Spiegeltents... People can visit on their way to and from the Skyworks on the Saturday, or stay the whole night and view the fireworks from the Fringe. The FRINGE WORLD weekender continues on Sunday night at Rooftop Movies with multinational electro-clash luminaries, Chicks on Speed. The concert is free for anyone who's bought a ticket to Fringe already, which is all the more reason to get busy and get going on a Fringe Binge!
Fringe World Late-Night Treats Over the last few years FRINGE WORLD's set up in the Urban Orchard outside the Art Gallery of WA has become a dead-set winner with the hordes of happy crowds who visit. A lovely outdoor environment under balmy night skies that's free to visit, this is where spot Fringe performances happen, Fringe crowds gather before and after their shows, and where you can enjoy a quiet bevie and some eats in a relaxed setting surrounded by smiley Fringe folk... Fringe Bliss! Thanks to the support of our friends at the institutions and venues who call the Cultural Centre home, this year we're extending the FRINGE WORLD set-up across the whole of the precinct. The Urban Orchard will house a new Spiegeltent - The West Australian Idolize, alongside some new pop-up surprises including an outdoor island bar that doubles as a large working fountain...
We're also building the new 'Little Creatures Secret Garden' behind the Art Gallery of WA that features De Parel Spiegeltent. Look out for the little door in the wall opposite the entrance to the Museum of WA, behind it lies a late-night Wonderland! All this, alongside The Blue Room Theatre's 'Summer Nights' program, multiple shows happening in the State Theatre Centre and out front of the State Library, our Circus Tents just down the road (and six stories up) at Rooftop Movies, plus all the other venues in the precinct - means you have access to over half the festival each night within a ten minute stroll. We've also got a double decker Fringe Bus giving Fringe ticket holders free rides to other Fringe hubs in surrounding neighbourhoods. (Sweet!)

Masks
Jackie and Veronica have been in love since the eighth grade. Nothing can come between them. Except a hat. Jackie is a petty drug dealer, just out of prison and trying to stay clean. He’s also still passionately in love with his coke-addicted childhood sweetheart, Veronica. Ralph D. is Jackie’s smooth-talking, shifty Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor. He’s married to the jaded and sharp-tongued Victoria, who, by the way, has the hots for Jackie. When Jackie finds a man’s hat in the flat he shares with Veronica, his jealousy spirals out of control and mayhem ensues. The Motherf**ker with the Hat is a mix between a sit com, Hispanic telenovela and true crime documentary. It's hysterical, irreverent and as foul-mouthed as it is funny. Nominated for six Tony Awards, including Best Play (2011) and three Drama Desk Awards (2011). "Don’t let the stupid title put you off. PICTURING NEW YORK Presented by Art Gallery of Western Australia
Depicting the iconic New York that captivates the world’s imagination and the idiosyncratic details that define New Yorkers’ sense of home, this exhibition from MoMA’s extraordinary photography collection celebrates the city in all its vitality, ambition and beauty. Made by approximately 90 artists responding to the city as well as professionals on assignment, including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, Lewis Hine, Helen Levitt, Cindy Sherman, Alfred Stieglitz, and Weegee, over 150 works reveal the deeply symbiotic relationship between photography and the ‘city that never sleeps’ – New York. Both an exploration of the life of the city and a documentation of photography’s evolution throughout the twentieth century, Picturing New York celebrates the great and continuing tradition of capturing the grit and glamour of one of the world’s greatest urban centres. Fringe World Awards FRINGE WORLD Awards are given to the best show in each genre category. A judging panel made up of over fourty individuals from across the cultural industries in Perth see all the works in the festival. They then have the tough time of deciding which are worthy of receiving prizes. Award winners get cash, development support and direct touring opportunities as part of their award. The Department of Culture and the Arts also supports award winners through its Artsflight program.
60 PAGE
There’s one award that’s decided by the audiences - The West Australian People's Choice Award. Show some love to your favourite FRINGE WORLD artists by voting for their show.
MARTIN SIMS AWARD FOR BEST WA PRODUCTION The Western Power Martin Sims Award is an annual award given to the best Western Australian work in the Fringe. It’s the Fringe’s top-tier prize, giving the winning artists access to over $10,000 and development support to tour their work to other national and international Fringe Festivals that are part of the World Fringe Alliance. Martin Sims was a Western Power employee for twenty-two years, an Artrage Chair for three years, and a life-long advocate for the arts in WA. As the Chair of Artrage, he established the partnership between Artrage and Western Power that has supported a decade of growth and transformation for the organisation, leading to the successful launch of the FRINGE WORLD Festival.
Voting opens Australia Day 26 January and closes on 22 February with the winner announced at the FRINGE WORLD Awards Ceremony on 24 February in the Spiegeltent.

FRINGE ON-THE ROAD is the regional touring arm of the FRINGE WORLD Festival. The first FRINGE On-The-Road tour saw our iconic De Parel Spiegeltent travel to Karratha in September 2012, thanks to the support of one of FRINGE WORLD's key partners, Woodside. It fulfilled an ambition we've had since Lotterywest supported us to acquire the Spiegeltent in 2011, and we hope to see the venue travel to many more communities across the state in the future, and revisit the Pilbara in 2013. Visit fringeontheroad.com.au for more information.
Outer Fringe Thanks to extended State Government support in 2013, we're pleased to be developing a new Outer Fringe tour that will occur during and straight after the 2013 FRINGE WORLD Festival.
The good folk of Albany, Esperence and Geraldton will receive a slice of the FRINGE WORLD pie, with Albany set to enjoy the latest smash hit US a cappella boy band to hit the world scene, The Exchange, playing the Albany Entertainment Centre over FEB 14-17. Esperance will be experiencing Face the Music, an award winning show direct from South Africa over FEB 28 - MAR 3 at the Bijou Theatre. On the same weekend, Geraldton will get some belly laughs from Josh Earl vs. The Australian Women’s Weekly Childrens' Birthday Cookbook at the Queens Park Theatre. More touring artists taking part in the Outer Fringe tour will be announced in the lead up to FRINGE WORLD 2013. Stay tuned at fringeworld.com.au and take part in a competition that could see you win a holiday with the touring artists.
