From the Mayor of Tainan City. —— Overturn Our Imagination of the City with Arts
臺南藝術節 2012 年啟辦，以「文化平權」、「藝術扎根」為標，在邁向第八年的此時，我們
In 2012, where Tainan Arts Festival held its first event, we made “Equal Right for Culture” and “Rooting for the Arts” our primary goals. This year, we are moving toward the eighth year, and we make a bigger step; we aspire to redefine the status and horizon of city arts festival. Each city is searching for its own path through arts festival, a pattern best fit local development and distinctive character expression. For Tainan, our rich cultural texture and depth is perfectly suitable for the particular expression we seek. Through curating art events, international collaboration, on-site production and outdoor performance, we mean to reach the largest audience possible, so that they trigger further historical, cultural as well as emotional connections, so as to allow conversations between history and art. It is our ambition and expectation for arts festival in the future to have a higher vision and a wider horizon to explore the possibility of Tainan’s culture, art, and imagination. It’s also for Tainan to be seen and attended through culture and art, as it’s for us to express Tainan’s characters and insights by way of arts festival.
決定跨出更大的一步，重新定義城市藝術節的高度與格局。每個縣市都在透過藝術節找路， 找一條最適在地發展與呈現獨特個性的模式，臺南層次紋理豐厚的文化底蘊，適可對接成為 獨特的表現形式，我們透過藝術策展、國際共創、現地製作，透過戶外空間的展演去接觸到 更廣大的民眾、引發更多歷史、文化與情感的連結，讓歷史空間與藝術創作產生對話。藝術節， 是否應有更高的視野與格局去擘劃這城市文化、藝術的未來想像與可能，這個城市是否能因 文化與藝術的創造而被看到、被關注，透過藝術節去表達一個城市的調性跟內涵，是我們未 來對藝術節的企圖與宏願。 今年我們邀約了國內外的優秀藝術家，以臺南山、海城市為創作基地，孕育與城市脈動息息 相關的全新製作，希望透過表演藝術來參與社會，看見城市的不同面貌，因此，以「看不見 的城市」為主題，邀請大家一起出走，共同穿越，釋放和挖掘整個大臺南城市空間裡不同層 次的人文地景。 2019 臺南藝術節全新翻轉，以深度觀點進行跨國聯結，建立典範。「城市藝術節」與城市文 化紋理深度連結，在國際上行之有年、成效卓著，而臺灣則仍罕見，期透過此次藝術節的轉 型呈現，我們得以展現臺南立基文化首府的豐富內涵以及觀照當代的前衛眼光。2019 臺南藝 術節是進入城市空間的「環境劇場」，更是為臺南古都帶來創新的「當代觀點的藝術節」，
This year we invite extraordinary artists from all over the world to come to Tainan as their site of artwork, where they create their brand new work in reflecting on the impulse of this city. We hope they participate in this city through performance art and see Tainan’s various faces. Thus, we employ “the Invisible City” as our theme of the year, and we invite you to join us. Together, we travel, explore and release the various layers of cultural landscape in the urban space of the entire Tainan City.

Tainan Arts Festival 2019 is a whole new beginning. We establish transnational connections with insightful perspectives and aim to make an example. “City arts festival” is deeply entwined with a city’s cultural texture; such an event has been ongoing in the international world for years with visible accomplishments, but it’s still underexplored in Taiwan. With the attempt of transformation in Tainan Arts Festival this year, we expect to present Tainan, Taiwan’s first capital, with its rich culture, as we also attend to avant-garde perspectives of the contemporary time. Tainan Arts Festival 2019 is an environmental theater to enter urban space; it’s also an art event with a contemporary eye to bring innovation to this old city. It is an art event of the city citizens, meant to expose public issues; it’s also an international art event that connects world cities. You find wonder like this only in Tainan. I, Huang Wei-che, the Mayor of Tainan, invite you to go out with me. Let’s travel this invisible city together.

In the past seven years, Tainan Arts Festival has consistently put forth “City Stage,” an exciting program of environmental and site-specific theatre works that cultivate a kind of performing arts embedded in the local fabric of the city. The festival this year builds upon “City Stage” by removing its original structure of genre divisions and dispersing the program within a network of venues spread throughout the city districts. Participating projects begin in Tainan City and traverse through mountainous routes and coastlines to discover the many layers of the local culture and natural landscape, as well as foster exchange amongst different social groups.

In preparation of the festival, the artists from Taiwan and abroad, including Kitt Johnson from Denmark, Jecko Siompo from Indonesia, Scarecrow Contemporary Dance Company from Tainan and Taiwanese dancer CHOU Shu-yi, began their creative process with a period of field research before proceeding into production. Along the way, many local residents became closely involved with the projects, including students from the Longshan, Xinying and Yizai Elementary Schools, the Siraya tribe in Baihe, the shops in old Tainan and the people of Tainan Park.

In terms of venue choice, we deter from obvious tourist attractions and explore the cracks and crevices of the city that have been long ignored or marginalized. Through art, we explore the past and the present of the city, the hidden and the exposed, its communities and the potential of its future. The festival offers an art navigation system for the discovery of hidden perspectives of Tainan.

Italo Calvino writes in his novel Invisible Cities, “…sometimes different cities follow one another on the same site and under the same name, born and dying without knowing one another, without communication among themselves.” Inspired by this statement, we ask the following questions. How many times has Tainan been born and died under the same name? When we see a city, what is invisible to us and which aspects are we not willing to see? This year’s Tainan Art Festival takes on the name of “Invisible Cities” and seeks to excavate the many hidden narratives around us. By staging performances throughout Tainan, the festival responds to the transformation of city space over time, and in turn, calls for the city to observe its own potential for art.

Everyone is invited to our Tainan outdoor feast tonight! With the sound of thunderous drumming, the mist disperses and the stage is revealed. Actress Lotus WANG tells stories about the history of Taiwan. Cross-genre musician Blaire KO, contemporary dancer and choreographer LIN Yu-ju, the musical duo Owen WANG and Kim CHEN also take part to bring the audience a spectacular performance that consists of Taiwanese opera, the traditional Chinese string music mixed with the western chamber music and the Taiwanese puppet show. On a stage adorned with dazzling light designed by LuxuryLogico, the performers convey their love for the island in this thrilling audio-visual feast. Narrating histories that span a century, the boisterous feast offers an incredible range of performances that promise the audience an unforgettable night!

In recent years, choreographer CHOU Shu-yi has been exploring urban spaces with his body. As the artist-in-residence at the Scarecrow Contemporary Dance Company in Tainan for the last two years, CHOU explores the potential of developing a site-specific performance in the unique historical and cultural space in Tainan. He interacts with local residents in their everyday lives and invites them to collaboratively articulate the rich and layered daily life of Tainan. “Having spent the last year exploring Tainan, I decided to begin from my everyday experiences of Tainan Park. Giving myself up to 100 days, I listened, observed, walked in the park and talked to people in preparation of a site-specific performance. Through my encounters with local residents, the past of the city is connected with its present and future. By crossing the boundaries between performance and living space, we search for the body image of the Tainan Park.” – CHOU Shu-yi

派對！ Jecko Siompo is a renowned Indonesian dancer trained in the traditional Indonesian and contemporary dance. He learned hip-hop music in New York and integrates street dance and hip-hop culture into the Indonesian Papua dance. City Zoo is a socially engaged art project that Siompo has been developing for more than ten years. Siompo blends elements that represent urban culture such as hip-hop and modern dance into the dance movements inspired by the Jayapura and Wamena aboriginal traditions in eastern Papua and the imitation of wild animals. As a result, he has developed a unique body language that has never seen before. Siompo has been invited to the workshops and to perform in many countries, including Japan, Australia, Netherlands and Germany. Workshop participants enjoy the movement of dance while reflecting upon the difference and co-existence between nature and city as well as between the humans and the animals. For the Tainan edition of City Zoo, Siompo works with professional dancers and the children, teenagers and young dancers in Tainan with New Visions New Voices Theatre Company. New Visions New Voices Theatre Company is an award-winning troupe based in Tainan. Dedicated to social action and equal cultural rights, the company fosters youth theatre and art education for the elderly. City Zoo invites everyone to join an animal party in the city!

Sentimental Journey is named after photographer Nobuyoshi Araki’s work with the same title. Inspired by the Me Too Movement in 2018, the performance looks into the issues involved in the creative process such as the relations between art, morality and crime. Set in The Place Tainan (hotel), the environmental theatre production is an extension of playwright and theatre director Snow HUANG’s “Sound Theatre” and “Promenade Theatre.” As a homage to Rashomon, Sentimental Journey is presented in three rooms set up from three points of view, and only one audience is allowed in a room at one time to examine the traces left by what happened in the incident.

There are only streets and museums on the map, and the streets have now become hotspots for checking in. There are no ruins, only relics; no death, only revitalization. In the book Curry Bone’s Travel, Sightseeing Doctor Curry Bone chronicles his adventures in Dwarves’ Land. With a copy in hand, you can also be expert traveler. Wishing you a pleasant trip! Curry Bone’s Travel 2019 by Step Out draws from three original plays, including Curry Bone’s Travel, LIN KAI with No River and Mong-ha 1849. The work is specially written for Tainan as a walking tour to promote cultural sightseeing. Through city streets and heritage sites, a story of the past weaves between fiction and reality, while the poetic presentation of objects and image on stage allows the audience to walk between reality and imagination. Set in a familiar cityscape, the work offers new experiences of the senses and promotes re-examination of the link between the present and the past as well as the connection between individuals and society. This is not a participatory theatre production. Mammalian Diving Reflex (MDR) is a social art group from Canada. Combining theoretical research and field practices, the company creates playful yet critical works that respond to the complexity of contemporary society. So far, the company has been invited to more than eighty cities around the world, producing performances and research projects with different cultural communities Compelling Telling, Intervening in Public Places is a workshop led by Darren O’Donnell, the artistic director of MDR. Based on the theory and methodologies of social acupuncture, participants discuss case studies before carrying out the experiment. They invite neighbors, regardless of acquaintance level, to take part in this fun participatory project.

Participants are led into the woods and onto sandy beaches, guided by their sense of sight, sound and touch. Tsān Tiōng Khiah originated from the site-specific concept MELLEMRUM encounter arranged and curated by Kitt Johnson between 2008 and 2014. In 2008, the project was praised as “Best Theatrical Experience of the Year” by AOK guides and loved by the critics and the audiences alike. MELLEMRUM encounter was subsequently carried out in other countries such as Greece, India and Macau. For every edition, the project incorporated elements of local history and environment, inviting the audience to explore the gaps between time and space. Tainan plays an important role in the history of Taiwan. Traces that remain of the past interweave with new cultural developments to create the city’s sense of seasoned depth. Walking through alleyways and encountering places in the city that are now hidden or neglected, we sense layered dimensions, sceneries, changes over time, the flow of human migration, the rise and fall of economy and the run of local news. Through engagement with the arts, traces of the past surface again, allowing the audience to place their own imagination and memories in the gaps between time and space.

Rivers have historically determined the paths of human migration and the location of settlements. Nowadays, very few people know where rivers begin or have the experience of physically searching for natural water sources, the borders of waterways have become blurred and the traces of migration are gradually disappearing. The social groups in Tainan are like rivers that flow across the land and converge with other branches to become even bigger rivers that nurture the lives on the planet. Do not fight the river over its course since we can name every brook and river; following the flow, we will see our souls and the clarity of our hearts and minds. TAI Body Theatre features a special body language based on foot scores. Through field research, the theatre group collects Taiwanese aboriginal myths, tales of migration and observes various folk rituals. Combining traditional music and dance and bamboo weaving techniques, the group discovers a close connection between daily life in the tribe and its art and culture. Through water, they celebrate the cultural landscape of Tainan.

敘事轉化擴展之餘，還有對當今臺灣社會與華人文化共感的強烈指涉。 Are we at the liberty to manipulate and criticize great literary works? When the characters in Dream of the Red Chamber are once again brought to life on the stage, does the most perfect adaptation convey the happiest ending one expects in life? approaching theatre is an award-winning company specialized in re-interpreting Chinese-language literary works. The Stone Unreturned is co-written by KOH Chooneiow, a playwright known for his literary narrative and CHENG Yin-chen, who is dedicated to developing awareness of the being of the body and sound choreography, derived from traditional theatre and music. Starting with the novel, Dream of the Red Chamber, the play looks into the dialectics between the destiny and fate as well as between fiction and reality. On stage, actors bring to life the characters caught in their unpredictable fates. Following the first eighty chapters written by TSAO Hsueh-chin, there are various existing versions to the last part of the novel. As a result, the ending has remained a mystery that can never be solved. The Stone Unreturned is not a remake of a classic novel but a production that gives the text a chance to be re-shaped. From a contemporary perspective, we invite the audience to witness the original story, how it is expanded through set design, sound and storytelling, and its strong references to how Taiwanese society responds to traditional Chinese culture.

On the stage, there is water, fishing nets, buoys brought back from the uninhabited sandbar in Qigu, a water bucket for collecting oysters and an awareness of staying true to oneself. Childhood memories of the lagoon are retrieved and turned into music and dance as the story unfolds. The Sound Diary by the Sea is a locally grounded musical theatre production by music director Artyom Kim, choreographer Maria Tikhomolova, the teachers and students of the Longhshan Elementary School, the solo musicians of Tainan City Traditional Orchestra and the Innovation series Music team from the National Theatre and Concert Hall. Based on Artyom Kim’s “method of collective composing,” the project begins from a blank slate. Working with thirty children from the seaside town and eleven brilliant Taiwanese musicians, Kim leads sessions of rehearsals and warm ups that focus on exercising emotions, awareness and spirit to mobilize the natural rhythm and musicality of each performer. The result is an original piece of music accompanied by dance, text and the theatrical elements. Using 8.1 surround sound, the musical piece generates a refined ambiance that evokes a feeling of being surrounded by ocean waves. Students from the Department of Fashion Design and Management at the Tainan University of Technology designed the costume, makeup and hairstyling of the production.

透過公開徵件，鼓勵臺南在地團隊全新編創或重製經典， 於臺南的劇場空間呈現精緻的演出。 The program, by a process of open call, encourages local art groups to come up with new productions or remakes of classics to be staged in theatres in Tainan.
馬卡道族少女連續失蹤，頭目族人束手無策找上金娘求助，金娘自覺勢單力薄，便找上天地 會大盟主林爽文，林爽文為了打敗清兵，便要求金娘訓練馬卡道族藤甲兵來幫助林爽文攻打 鳳山城，連下幾城之後林爽文便自封國號，登基稱帝，早就將找尋馬卡道族少女之事拋諸腦 後，金娘也就此看破離開天地會。林爽文稱帝消息傳回京城，乾隆大怒，便派出陝甘總督福 康安招討臺灣，很快的福康安便活捉林爽文，最後更要求金娘以投降為條件釋放馬卡道族少 女，金娘為了將馬卡道族失蹤少女們救回，也答應了這個條件。金娘離開後，少女們回來了， 從此再也沒有人見過金娘……

With several Makatao girls gone missing, the disheartened tribal chief turns to the witch Jin-niang for help. Jin-niang replies that she herself alone cannot solve the mysterious disappearances and must seek support from LIN Shuang-wen, the head of Tiandihui (Heaven and Earth Society) and rebel leader against the Imperial Qing government. LIN offers to help find the missing girls in return for Jin-niang’s assistance to train the Makatao troops and seize Fengshan City. After successfully conquering a few cities in Taiwan, LIN declares himself emperor and completely forgets about his promise to save the Makatao girls. Disappointed, Jin-niang leaves the army. As the news of LIN’s claim to the throne reaches Qing Emperor Qianlong, the infuriated emperor sends the Governor of Shanxi and Gansu to vanquish LIN. Eventually, LIN is captured alive and Jin-niang is asked to surrender in exchange for the release of the Makatao girls. To save the girls, Jin-niang agrees. When the girls return to the tribe, Jin-niang disappears and no one sees her again…

Goodoo Studio Goodoo Studio was founded in 2010 in Tainan, a city known for its ancient history and multiculturism. Our goal is to keep traditions alive, pass them down while bringing in innovation. We are dedicated to discovering local stories, promoting the Taiwanese glove puppetry and preserving the folklore as well as the traditional crafts in order to demonstrate Taiwanese culture to the public. In 2014, our highly acclaimed environmental theatre production, The War in 1683, was selected for the Tainan Arts Festival and performed at the Koxinga Shrine and the Great South Gate. 以府城「大井頭」這個重要的歷史地標為發想之源，改編日治時期重要臺日作家西川滿《赤 崁記》，及日本劇場大師太田省吾的經典劇作《水之驛站》。一個是風雲霍霍赤崁城上明鄭 王朝的最後身影，一個是沉靜有致的視覺之詩；兩個文本呈現不同時空，所勾勒的皆是戰爭 之下凝練的人性。臨水之源，生命、戰爭與城市的軌跡皆由此開始。
Inspired by Dajingtou, an important historical landmark in Tainan, The Well is a combined adaptation of Sekikanki by prominent Japanese writer Nishikawa Mitsuru of the Taiwanese colonial period and The Water Station by Japanese theatre guru Ota Shogo. The former novel paints a turbulent portrait of the Kingdom of Formosa on the grand Fort Provintia, while the latter play is a silent and yet powerful visual poem. Being set in different periods, both works reflect upon how human nature is shaped and expose during times of war. Near sources of water begin the traces of life, war and cities.

Fevervine Dance Theatre ‘We’re Fevervine Dance Theatre and we tell you stories of Tainan!’ “Fevervine” is a plant native to Taiwan that is used to treat stomach pains. As the name “Fevervine” implies, our works are close to the daily lives of ordinary people and aim to discover the traditions, the customs and the collective memories of the Taiwanese in order to construct an aesthetic of dance and theatre that conveys the Taiwanese characters and culture. DiDi Dance Theatre Founded in 1996, DiDi Dance Theatre has become an important indicator of the contemporary dance in Southern Taiwan. Artistic creation is the root of arts as well as the embodiment of life. We regard dance and theatre production as a form of intimate interaction between people, and we are dedicated to promoting the works of the promising contemporary dancers. Led by choreographer CHEN Chih-lei, Utopia is a collective work of dancers CHEN Chia-hung and CHANG Hsin-chih and it is not only the embodiment of the contemporary body language but a shock to one’s body. 「人的最初是不得已來到這個世界，人的最後是不得已離開這個世界。」生命的來去如微塵飄 渺，旅途的遠方是過客的痕跡，暫時的停留只為尋找異鄉裡的故鄉，族群裡住著偏見與歧視， 才到來的旅人只能被孤立淹沒，人性的醜陋不遮掩的暴露在陽光底下，逆光虛弱的將生命吞 噬。 《異鄉人》是賴翠霜舞創劇場自 2018 延伸至 2019，以「旅」作為在地化創作題材的雙年作 品之一。歷經兩年的駐點，除了培養在地人才及深入創作，也為他鄉遊子燃起對故鄉的展望。 賴翠霜試圖以「異鄉」的漂泊與局外人的處境，訴說從文化、種族、思想意識所產生的被接 納與否的失語狀態，一種處於不安定、沒有歸屬感的內心探究。
‘One is brought into this world without giving consent and then forced to depart against one’s will.’ Life comes and goes like a speck of dust and what lies far ahead in every journey are traces left behind by previous travelers. One pauses in search for a sense of home in a strange place. In a society filled with bias and discrimination, travellers upon arrival are overwhelmed by feelings of isolation. The dark side of human nature is exposed under the sun while a back-lit illumination feebly devours our lives. Based on the theme of travel, Stranger is a production by Lai Creative Dance Theatre created between 2018 to 2019. Taking up residency in Tainan for the past two years, the company has been nurturing local talents and delving deep into creative endeavors. In Tainan, theatre director LAI Tsui-shuang faces inevitable homesickness living away from home. Perceiving herself as an outsider drifting in a foreign land, she seeks to convey a state of speechlessness caused by her relationship with certain cultural, ethnic and ideological point of views. Stranger is an inner search of someone who does not feel settled nor finds a sense of belonging.

Lais Creative Dance Theatre Founded by LAI Tsui-shuang, a Taiwanese choreographer based in Germany, the Lais Creative Dance Theatre is dedicated to exploring the possibilities in arts and promoting dance in society. In 2011, it won the Taishin Performing Arts Award. Since its establishment, the company has recruited professionals in various fields and made a new production every year. In addition, it hosts other dance companies and art groups from Taiwan and abroad to promote dance as a performing art. Often touching upon social issues, the company works with multiple art forms and aims to engage with the public using body language from everyday life.

「尚青計畫」為楊景翔演劇團於 2016 年開啟的培育創作者交流計畫，固定兩年一度於臺北舉 辦。2018 年尚青計畫演出《今晚，我們在公寓寫作》，2019 年延續「寫作」概念與臺南在 地故事融合，發展出《今晚，我們在台南寫作》。 「尚青計畫」是一個有系統的培訓創作者的活動，入選培訓的學員將參與導演、表演和文本 創作的課程，在老師的帶領創作下，將學員個人的故事與經典文本以概念穿插的方式融合成 概念完整的劇本。並在課程結束後，由劇團藝術總監楊景翔和「尚青計畫」主持人潘冠宏共 同執導，與劇團演員和學員共同演出。這次演出將以臺南發生的在地故事為主軸，讓這些想 說故事的朋友，「在臺南的舞臺上，說自己在臺南的故事。」
Initiated by Yang Ching Hsiang Ensemble in 2016, The Young Project is a Taipeibased biannual project that aims to support and provide exchange between artists. In 2018, the project organized a writing event entitled Tonight, We Are Writing in the Apartment. At Tainan Art Festival, The Young Project presents Tonight, We Are Writing in Tainan, which continues to explore the practice of writing while incorporating local stories of Tainan. The Young Project is a systematic training program that offers courses in directing, performing and writing to selected artists. The program involves blending personal stories with classic texts to produce hybrid scripts. These scripts are then worked into plays co-directed by the artistic director YANG Ching-hsiang and PAN Kuan-hung, the manager of The Young Project and performed by fellow participants. Tonight, We Are Writing in Tainan centers around the stories of Tainan and offers those interested in storytelling a stage to tell stories about themselves and Tainan.

Yang Ching Hsiang Ensemble - The Young Project
Yang Ching Hsiang Ensemble Yang Ching Hsiang Ensemble was established with the collaboration of YANG Ching-hsiang, TSAI Yi-ling, JANG Huen-juin and Kate Stanislawski in Taipei, 2013. The goal is to “penetrate the spirit of the time and to document the contemporary phenomena” through the allegorical texts we compose, embodying the contemporary life from an intercultural perspective. YANG, the artistic director, has worked in theatre, film and television for years. During his participation in the Toga Festival in Japan, he came to realize that most of the working process was done as preparation for a final performance. The realization led him to break the conventions. Starting with the idea of exploration, the actors and the playwrights are encouraged to develop their work organically while the actors’ training is emphasized. Through the workshop and the exchange in acting methods and skills, the company aims to develop the uniqueness of the contemporary Taiwanese theatre.

We have visited six cities in Taiwan, searching for historical buildings in various towns and documenting the natural and the cultural landscape around them. Stories and memories are infused into a shadow puppet show of an old granny. Inspired by everyday life - the food, clothing, housing, transport, education and leisure - we invite a number of experts in related fields to share their lived experiences and viewpoints. In these old houses, we reconnect with different times and spaces of today…

Flying Group Theatre Flying Group Theatre was established in May, 2004. Early on, puppetry was the focus of their creative expression. To date, the company has received numerous nominations by the Taishin Arts Award and has taken part in many international art festivals. Flying Group Theatre produces performances presented in multimedia that take place in intimate spaces, challenging the conventionally accepted distance between the performers and the audience.
顛覆傳統與現代的表演方式， 幽默風趣視角呈現時代故事， 看似無比真實卻又荒唐無理， 戲臺後的真實人生即將上演。 起雲手、話春秋， 歌仔戲班的戲子伶人， 臺前扮演著忠孝節義， 臺後活出真實的人生。 一段穿越生死的三角戀， 一對決心私奔的少年郎， 一群心懷鬼胎的戲子們， 一個無法面對自我的人， 歲月中他們追尋自我的夢， 時代下他們被迫屈服現實。
Inside Out subverts both traditional and modern methods of performance and takes on a humorous approach to tell a story of contemporary times. The production seems utterly realist and ridiculous at the same time, while the show behind stage is about to start. Taiwanese opera singers bring historical figures to life on the stage while leading another life offstage. A love triangle overcomes the boundaries between the dead and the living; a pair of young lovers who are determined to elope; a group of actors who plot against each other; and a man who cannot bear facing himself. In search of dreams, they are eventually forced to bow down to the reality.

This year, Tainan Arts Festival brings a diverse program of sounds to the city. Encompassing various periods, styles and cultures, the festival puts together a new cultural look of Tainan. As the arts are the soul of the city, music is the body of its soul and the embodiment of the city and time. At the Tainan Arts Festival, every program is a city, waiting to meet the audience as they climb up, look around and explore it.

Music Fabric - the music program begins with Győr Philharmonic Orchestra, an orchestra with 155 years’ history from Hungary. This is their first visit to Taiwan, and the program combines the spirit of the Hungarian folk music with demonstration of the brilliant skills of the Russian school. The two piano pieces, as homage to Paganini, are performed in the same concert in Taiwan for the first time. From beginning to end, the music is colorful and passionate while the essence of the Hungarian music is vividly conveyed through a Hungarian orchestra. Taiwan Expression - a concert by One Song Orchestra with a focus on Taiwanese music. The selection includes the songs of Taiwanese aboriginal tribes, the music composed by the composers based in Tainan and the renowned Taiwanese composer TENG Yu-hsien, Taiwanese folk songs, Taiwanese movie soundtracks and the contemporary Taiwanese music. The program shows the complete history of Taiwanese music and pushes the Taiwanese folk music combined with the classical music to a higher level. Classic ECHO - Munich Chamber Orchestra, a traditional and yet innovative orchestra that is celebrated as the world No. 1 in chamber music, performs a repertoire of classics from the Classical period. Germany and Austria have always been the center of classical music as their unique culture nurtured the purest classical music in history. With the most appropriate ensemble, Munich Chamber Orchestra is known for their delicate, silky and beautiful renditions of Beethoven and Schubert. The top quality of their performance has won them acclaim from the audience around the world. Together with British cellist Steven Isserlis’ persuasive musical language, they reenact the glory of the Classical period. Time After Time - Trio Bellissimo, a piano trio comprises three musicians from Tainan, plays the classics that convey the images of various cities captured in time, showing the different and yet equally charming qualities of these places. The HAPPY CONCERT - a collaboration between the duo Igudesman & Joo and the TNNUA Orchestra. It is not only the Taiwanese premiere of the new production but the first time that the duo plays with a student orchestra, pushing the music education in Southern Taiwan a step forward. Let us together celebrate youthful creativity and the festivity of music. During past three years, the Tainan Arts Festival has consistently put forth an original, refined and experimental music program. By seeking one breakthrough after another, we aim to demonstrate music with our liberal and innovative arrangement, enriching the culture and the soul of the city. In this year’s Tainan Arts Festival, I have curated five original concerts that aim to look into the multiple images of the city through this brand-new program. I blend classical music into Tainan, connecting the city to the arts on the international stage. Almost all the productions are made for the Tainan Arts Festival, and they are performed not only for the first time in Taiwan but in Tainan only.

Influenced by the western Europe, the Balkans, Turkey and the Arabic world, the Eastern European folk music is known for its explosive, passionate and compelling quality. This concert is a collection of the Eastern European masterpieces, leading the audience into the splendid, down-to-earth and lively garden of music. Kodály: the Dances of Galanta and Bartok: Concerto for Orchestra absorb the essence of the folk music and transform it into its own language. Conducted by the maestro and played by the celebrated Hungarian orchestra, the Hungarian spirit feels even more pronounced. In addition, Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43 and Lutosławski VariaWons on a Theme by Paganini performed by the acclaimed pianist Eva Yulin Shen are a homage to Niccolo Paganini, the celebrated Italian violinist and composer. Moreover, such a combination is the first attempt ever made in Taiwan.

Győr Phiharmonic Orchestra× Solo pianist Eva Yulin Shen Established in 1862, Győr Philharmonic Orchestra is a European orchestra founded around the same time as the Vienna Philharmonic. Comprising 130 skillful musicians, Győr Philharmonic Orchestra is active at various arts festivals throughout Europe and plays an important role in the Hungarian music. At the 2019 Tainan Arts Festival, Győr Philharmonic Orchestra collaborates with Eva Yulin Shen, a famous pianist born in Tainan and currently based in Germany. Renowned conductor Yuli Turovsky once commented on Shen. ‘The combination of outstanding musicality, hearing, manners and wisdom makes her one of the most outstanding pianists of her age.’

泥香之城：臺灣意象
The earth in our hometown always smells fragrant to us. If nostalgia could sing, it would sound like One Song. Taiwanese composer LI Che-yi invited a group of brilliant young Taiwanese musicians trained in classical music to form One Song Orchestra and serves as its music director. “To turn the classical music Taiwanese and the Taiwanese music classical” is the goal, and in order to achieve it, One Song Orchestra plays the music composed by Taiwanese composers, demonstrating the unique music native to the island. The music One Song Orchestra brings to the listeners feels like the butterflies flying in the rice fields, the windowsill orchid in Dawu Mountain and the sounds of waves in the Anping Harbor. The audience are invited to come to the city filled with the fragrance of earth and pick the flowers of music.

Through signs and symbols, people describe and preserve the city. Notes written by the composers display the look of the city in their memories. Anton Arensky spent his youth and learned to transform himself in St. Petersburg; the young Sergei Rachmaninoff fell in love for the first time in Ivanovka; Paul Schoenfeld sought a breakthrough among the aroma of drinks in Minneapolis; Buenos Aires stands for Astor Piazzolla’s everlasting homesickness.

Trio Bellissimo comprises three female musicians, including violinist LIN Chia-lin, cellist TAI Li-wen and pianist LIN Hsin-chieh. All born in Tainan and studied in the US for years, they worked with one another for the first time in Chimei Museum. They are dedicated to promoting refined professional classical music, encouraging the promising young musicians and exploring the possibilities of combining classical music with other arts. In the future, they will continue collaborating with artists from around the world and aim to re-create an environment for the artists in Southern Taiwan, bringing the interdisciplinary experience in arts to the local residents.

由英國當代大提琴巨將史蒂芬．伊瑟利斯領軍，擁有「世界第一室內樂團」稱號的慕尼黑室 內樂團，演奏鮑凱里尼、海頓與柴可夫斯基的作品。曲曲皆選自古典樂派的經典曲目，以極 致的樂音，帶來動人的樂章。 演出將由義大利古典樂派時期代表性器樂作曲家鮑凱里尼開場，銜接海頓第一號大提琴協奏 曲 C 大調，緊接著柴可夫斯基《如歌的行板》，以如癡如醉的音色為空間注入飽滿的情緒張力； 最後以海頓《告別交響曲》寫下幽默的結尾，帶給聽眾高雅脫俗又精湛的聆聽饗宴。
Led by the prominent British Cellist Steven Isserlis, Munich Chamber Orchestra, which is hailed as the World No. 1, plays the works written by Boccherini, Tchaikovsky and Haydn, and all of them are the classics of the Classical period. The program begins with the symphony by Boccherini, an Italian composer and cellist of the Classical era, followed by Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major and Tchaikovsky’s Andante cantabile, As the beautiful and dreamy music fills the space with emotion and tension, the concert finishes with Haydn’s symphony No. 45, “Farewell”, putting a humorous end to a fantastic and elegant audio feast.

Igudesman & Joo × TNNUA Orchestra Igudesman & Joo is a duo that comprises of musicians Aleksey Igudesman and Hyungki Joo. They combine comedy, classical music and pop culture together and perform in a special and cheerful style. Either playing as duo or solo or collaborating with a chamber or symphony orchestra, the duo gives countless concerts at the arts festivals around the world. This year in Tainan, they work with the TNNUA Orchestra, sparking creativity and innovation in the show. Trained professionally and led by conductor FAN Kai-hsi, the TNNUA Orchestra holds concerts on a regular basis and aims to improve itself and expand the repertoire.

望南藝評 2019 延續臺南藝術節系列活動：2016、2017「新評種」及 2018「望南藝評」。2019 年 將以「南方」為想像的視野、對話的基礎，以觀察和評論碰撞 2019 年臺南藝術節參 演作品、臺南環境劇場的發展史，以及回應縣市藝術節與當地文化生態、地方性需 要的歷史、社會及藝術課題。相較於前三年的「新評種」、「望南藝評」計畫，今 年不以工作坊、培力新評論種子為主，而以論壇、對談、駐節評論的形式回應首度 採策展制的臺南藝術節。
