WELCOME TO THE 2022 SUPERSTATE CONCERT BAND FESTIVAL! We’re pleased to see so many former SuperState bands returning—and excited to welcome our first-time participants to this premier concert band event. We hope you will find your time here to be educational and enjoyable. We welcome your comments and suggestions so that we can continue to grow and enhance the SuperState experience for all involved.
UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS BANDS In the 1920s, John Philip Sousa called it the “World’s Greatest College Band.” During multiple guest conducting experiences in the 1950s, Edwin Franko Goldman acclaimed it “second to none” and the “finest of all Concert Bands.” Superlatives such as these have come to be expected during the long and illustrious history of the University of Illinois Bands. Shortly after the University was founded in 1867, a military band was organized. The military band became the Concert Band and gave its first formal concert in 1890. Today’s Illinois Wind Symphony sits atop a pyramid of concert and athletic bands, including the Illinois Wind Orchestra, the Hindsley Concert Band, the University and Campus Bands, the Marching Illini and the other athletic bands, that regularly enroll more than 750 students each year. All concert and athletic bands are open to any University of Illinois student, regardless of major. Visit bands.illinois.edu for more information regarding auditions, the history of the Illinois Bands, and much more.
