Welcome

University of illinois Bands

Although the history of the University of Illinois Bands can be traced to 1868 with the founding of a military band, it was the appointment of Albert Austin Harding in 1905 that formally launched the first and foremost college band program in the world. In the 1920s, John Philip Sousa referred to the Illinois Band as the “World’s Greatest College Band.”

Throughout history, the innovations made at Illinois literally transformed bands around the world. Directors Mark Hindsley, Harry Begian, James F. Keene, and Stephen Peterson continued the Illinois tradition of leadership, commissioning new works, presenting inventive performances, and mentoring many of the nation’s top college and high school band directors through the conducting program at Illinois.

Today, the University of Illinois Bands are proud to be among the most influential and historic college band programs in the United States, offering all students the highest quality ensemble experiences. These ensembles include five concert bands, the 375-member Marching Illini, Basketball Bands, Volleyball Bands, and Summer Band. Nearly 700 students participate each semester in these outstanding ensembles, all of which are open to any University student, regardless of major. Visit bands.illinois.edu for more information.

ALFRED REED Armenian Dances, Part 1 DENNIS LLINÁS Un Cafecito

Comprised of approximately fifty-five undergraduate and graduate students who have attained an exceptional level of proficiency on their instruments, the Wind Orchestra is the second artistic concert band in the University of Illinois Bands program. Similar to the Illinois Wind Symphony, the Wind Orchestra performs large and chamber wind repertoire, new and contemporary music, and has a specific curricular design focused on a variety of musical styles throughout the year. The Wind Orchestra rehearses four hours per week, and presents two concerts per semester. The performance range of this ensemble includes campus, local area, and statewide events. The Wind Orchestra is open to music majors and non-majors by audition in the fall and spring semesters.

Damien Crutcher is currently the co-founder and CEO of Crescendo Detroit and serves as the conductor of the Farmington Community Band, the Detroit Symphony’s Civic Youth Concert Band, and the Detroit Community Concert Band. Additionally, he has conducted the Pacific Orchestra Youth Wind Ensemble, the Detroit Chamber Winds, and the Michigan State University Wind Symphony. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Michigan State University, and a master’s in conducting from the University of Michigan. Damien studied horn with Bryan Kennedy and Doug Campbell and conducting with Dr. Ronnie Wooten and Professor H. Robert Reynolds. After graduating from the University of Michigan, Damien served as director of bands and orchestra at Southfield–Lathrup High School.

Dr. Bradley Kent serves as state director of music for the University Interscholastic League, which serves some 750,000 student participants in Texas. Prior to his UIL appointment, he held the position of director of fine arts for the Richardson Independent School District, where he was the administrator for all band, choir, orchestra, visual art, and theatre programs. Dr. Kent began his career as a band director in the Lewisville Independent School District and went on to serve on the faculties of Texas A&M University at Commerce and Lamar University. Dr. Kent holds the doctor of musical arts degree and the master of music degree from The University of Texas at Austin, as well as the bachelor of music education degree from Louisiana State University.

Dr. Sarah McKoin is the director of bands and professor of conducting at Texas Tech University. Her responsibilities include conductor and musical director of the TTU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, administrating the graduate program in wind conducting, teaching conducting and wind literature, and overseeing all facets of the University band program. Prior to her appointment at Texas Tech, Professor McKoin was the director of bands at the University of Missouri–Kansas City Conservatory of Music and held appointments at the State University of New York at Buffalo and SUNY Fredonia. Dr. McKoin holds her doctor of musical arts degree from The University of Texas at Austin as well as degrees from Wichita State University and Michigan State University.

Allan McMurray is an internationally acclaimed artist conductor, teacher, author, and collaborator. He has conducted professional orchestras, ballet, opera, and contemporary chamber ensembles, but it is his passion for wind music and the teaching of conducting that has inspired the majority of his artistic career. As professor of conducting emeritus and distinguished professor at the University of Colorado, he served as director of bands from 1978–2013, where he established the masters and doctorate degrees in wind conducting, and, for three decades, hosted and taught the College Band Directors National Association Conducting Symposium.
