A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF BANDS, KEVIN GERALDI
Dear Alumni and Friends of the Illinois Bands,
Greetings from the historic Harding Band Building! My colleagues and I are very happy to share this update about the 2022–23 academic year as well as a look ahead to 2023–24. Year 154 of our Illinois Bands program was a fantastic success by every measure, and we are looking forward to the coming year with enthusiasm and anticipation!
Throughout this newsletter, you will see substantial evidence of the accomplishments of our program over the past year. I hope you will enjoy reading about the activities of the Marching Illini and our concert bands. The students in all our ensembles enjoyed traveling together, engaging with composers, and presenting incredible performances.
We are very happy to welcome Dr. Michael Vecchio to the School of Music faculty as our new assistant professor of music education (band)! Mike served as visiting faculty last year, and his passion for teaching music educators and connecting with band programs around our state is incredible. I am extremely fortunate to work with the best team of band conductors/educators in the profession— Barry Houser, Kim Fleming, Hannah Rudy, and Mike Vecchio!
The coming academic year has many exciting things in store for the hundreds of students from across campus who participate in the Illinois Bands. The Marching Illini will travel to perform at the University of Minnesota (and hopefully another warm-weather bowl game!), the Illinois Wind Symphony will present two world premieres and perform at the Chicagoland Invitational Concert Band Festival, and we will collectively continue to build upon our extraordinary legacy of excellence. Our program continues to lead the way through the activities and accomplishments of our concert bands, athletic bands, music education program, and graduate conducting studio. Serving our students’ needs by providing them with amazing experiences is our highest priority!
The generous support of our alumni and friends allows us to sustain the success of our program and offer exceptional experiences for our students. Every contribution is greatly appreciated, and this newsletter highlights and celebrates the many ways in which our program is enhanced by donor support. Please look for information in the newsletter about new and ongoing opportunities to give.
All of us in the Harding Band Building are looking forward to welcoming you to campus for Homecoming and at many other points throughout another exciting year for Illinois Bands!
GO ILLINI!

COMPOSER RESIDENCIES ILLINOIS SUMMER BAND PRESENTS 111 TH YEAR OF TWILIGHT CONCERTS
During the 2022–23 school year, Illinois Bands hosted many acclaimed composers as we continue to lead the way in the programming and performance of great repertoire for concert band. In November, composer James Lee III was in residency for the Illinois premiere of his symphony for band, Solar Testimonies, by the Illinois Wind Symphony. In February, composers James Stephenson and Joel Puckett traveled to UIUC to work with the Wind Symphony in rehearsal and attend the performance of their works. Conducting DMA student Isaac Brinberg (’23) coordinated a multiday residency with composer Chen Yi, who worked with Wind Orchestra and Hindsley Symphonic Band on her music. In addition, composers Shuying Li, Jules Pegram, Paul Dooley, and Randall Standridge attended rehearsals with the Wind Symphony, Wind Orchestra, and Hindsley Symphonic Band over Zoom.
In February, the Illinois Wind Symphony traveled to Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, Illinois, for the Indian Prairie District 204 Concert Band Symposium. The Wind Symphony performed for the band students from Neuqua Valley, Waubonsie Valley, and Metea Valley High Schools, featuring Dr. Jonathan Keeble as flute soloist, and then worked with bands from each high school in side-by-side clinic rehearsals with Dr. Geraldi conducting.
Support for the composer residencies and the Wind Symphony trip was provided by the Illinois Bands Loyalty Fund.
In Fall 2022, Illinois Bands also started a new “official” YouTube channel! We hope you will search YouTube and subscribe to @universityofillinoisbands, and watch the various performances and interviews that will be posted online.
During this past summer, over 130 current students, alumni, and friends of Illinois Bands came together to rehearse and perform two twilight concerts conducted by Barry Houser, Kevin Geraldi, and Hannah Rudy. A large audience attended both the June 22 and July 20 performances on the Quad, which featured a wide range of standard and popular selections.
JAMES F. KEENE BANDS COMMISSION FUND REPORT
Using funding support from the James F. Keene Bands Commission Fund, Illinois Bands is participating in the American Bandmasters Association IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access) Consortium. During each year of a three-year cycle, the ABA IDEA Consortium will enrich the diversity of composers writing for the band medium by commissioning a new work by a composer representing diverse intersections. Each composition will receive its world premiere by one of the prestigious ensembles performing at the annual ABA Convention. In March 2024, a new work by Kevin Day will be premiered at the ABA convention in Washington, DC. The University of Illinois Bands regards diversity, equity, and inclusion as core values integral to guiding our progress toward excellence, and we strive to represent that philosophy in all our actions.
If you would like to support our work in cultivating the next generation of great composers and developing the concert band repertoire, please consider contributing to the James F. Keene Bands Commission Fund.

ILLINOIS BANDS AND MUSIC EDUCATION FACULTY COLLABORATE ON SCHOOL CLINICS
directed by Matt Bufis and Haley Sullivan, Carl Sandburg High School directed by Stewart Bailey and Brian Hillhouse, and Disney II Magnet High School directed by Roger DeKind took part in this experience.
Building on the tradition of collaboration between the UIUC Music Education and Bands faculty, Mike Vecchio, Kevin Geraldi, and Barry Houser worked together to host three school bands on campus for intensive clinics during 2022–23. Each school visit involved small group sectionals taught by University of Illinois instrumental music education students, a tour of the Sousa Archives led by Scott Schwartz, a clinic with Illinois Bands faculty or observing an Illinois Wind Symphony rehearsal, lunch on Green Street, and a walking tour of the UIUC campus. The bands from Evanston Township High School
Working with current middle and high school musicians is an essential element of the music education curriculum at the University of Illinois. Putting the theoretical foundations of teaching into a practical context allows future teachers to gain invaluable experience in learning how to effectively connect with students from a variety of backgrounds and musical experiences. These band visits offered our students chances to utilize their pedagogy and build meaningful connections with young musicians.
These on-campus music education clinics will continue in future semesters. If you are a current elementary, middle, or high school band director and are interested in bringing your group to the UIUC campus, please contact Mike Vecchio (vecchiom@illinois.edu). Our oncampus outreach efforts are in addition to the dozens of school visits by our faculty throughout the year to programs around Illinois. For general information about our outreach offerings, please visit https:// www.bands.illinois.edu/outreach-and-engagement.
GREETINGS TO ALL UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS BAND ALUMNI, FAMILIES, FRIENDS, FACULTY, STAFF, AND CURRENT STUDENTS!
I am excited to be writing to you in this newsletter for the first time in my role as Illinois Bands Alumni Board President. For those of you who I have not yet met, my name is Tom Jozefowicz. I played sousaphone in the Marching Illini and graduated from the College of Engineering in 2018. I hope you all are as excited as I am for the fall 2023 Illinois football season and are counting down the days to Homecoming 2023!
In 2022, we had the opportunity to give a warm welcome to the newest additions to the Illinois Bands faculty—Director of Bands Kevin Geraldi and Assistant Directors Kim Fleming and Hannah Rudy—who I know are looking forward to working with Barry Houser and the rest of the Marching Illini in welcoming all our alumni back to campus for Homecoming weekend (Illinois vs. Wisconsin) on October 20–21. If you were unable to join us last year, you will be impressed by this new team who have already started to build on the strong legacy of the Illinois Bands program.
In 2022, we welcomed back over 200 alumni on the field to cheer the Illini onto victory against Minnesota. This year, we hope to bring even more band alumni back to campus as we build on that success and the success of the 2022 football season.
You can find information about registration and a tentative schedule for Homecoming 2023 on the Bands website. For more details, please visit: https://www.bands.illinois.edu/homecoming
The theme for Homecoming 2023 is “Sweet Home Illini,” which Professor Houser has promised will play a major role in the song selections for what our assembled alumni will play on the field. In addition to this theme, this season we plan to honor all returning members of the Marching Illini who were part of the ensemble that marched as part of the 1983–1984 Rose Bowl season forty years ago.
Lastly, I want to give a huge thanks to all our Band Alumni Board and Homecoming Committee volunteers, including our homecoming committee chair, Maureen Durack, for their work, ideas, and support for the current members of the Illinois Bands program and the greater Band Alumni family. As always, we want to extend a huge thank you to Barry, Kevin, Hannah, Kim, and Joy for all they do day-in, day-out at the Harding Band Building to keep the Illini Spirit alive and well for generations to come!
If you would like to volunteer to serve on the Band Alumni Board or work with us on any of our future events, please email uibandsalumni@gmail.com. Like any ensemble or organization, it is truly a team effort, and we appreciate your involvement in any way you are able. GO ILLINI!!!

MARCHING ILLINI HIGHLIGHTS
2022–2023 A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE MARCHING ILLINI, BARRY HOUSER
Dear Fellow Illinois Bands Alumni and Friends,
Greetings from the iconic and historic Harding Band Building!
Once again, it is an honor and privilege to serve our program as the associate director of bands and the director of the Marching Illini. We have successfully navigated another transition in our program with the addition of Kevin Geraldi as director of bands and Kim Fleming and Hannah Rudy as assistant directors in our storied program. I am excited to collaborate and continue to breathe new life into our historic but relevant program with our amazing team.
The start of this season and academic year marks the 155th year of the University of Illinois Bands and the start of #band155 with the Marching Illini. We are excited to welcome our new members who had some of their most fierce competition with regard to auditions yet… 873+ new students and over 200 returning students to fill the ranks of our 400-member Marching Illini. We are grateful for so many who continue to be interested in joining the Best Band in the Land, the Nation’s Premier College Marching Band. The energy and passion they bring to each performance are simply awe-inspiring. Their precision, synchronization, and artistry on the field are a testament to the countless hours of practice and commitment that they have invested in perfecting their craft. Watching the Marching Illini in action is a true delight and an uplifting experience that leaves a lasting impression on all who witness it.
As we start this season with True Illini Spirit and an ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE, I want to thank you for contributing to our March Forth campaign. The 2023 campaign once again smashed all previous fundraising records for this event! Your generous donations are being used daily and will benefit the students in the Marching Illini for years to come. Your generosity is helping us to provide experiences of a lifetime—along with better instruments, equipment, the opportunity to travel, defraying costs associated with required attire, and awards/scholarships to recognize a number of our students.
On a different note, our Loyalty Scholarship Fund is growing closer to reaching our goal of $1,000,000 by 2025. These resources will be used to THANK our graduating seniors for their LOYALTY during their time in the Marching Illini—an honorarium of $500.
No surprise but we have another busy fall planned—our complete schedule can be found at https://marchingillini.com and in this newsletter. Some highlights of our season include:
• A really nice schedule of seven home games in Memorial Stadium.
• A trip to Decatur for the Farm Progress Show at the end of August.
• An exhibition performance in Washington, Illinois, with the Washington Community High School Band in late October.
• The return of the Marching Illini Live in Concert in State Farm Center (Assembly Hall) on October 8th.
• A planned road trip to Minnesota for the ILLINOIS vs Minnesota football game.
You are cordially invited to join us for Homecoming 2023 that will undoubtedly ignite the spirit of nostalgia and camaraderie! As valued members of our esteemed Illinois Bands program, we are thrilled to extend this heartfelt invitation for you to return to your roots and perform with us once again during an upcoming game. Please join us for Homecoming 2023 with our theme “Sweet Home Illini.” Check out Tom’s letter in this newsletter as well as the Homecoming Schedule. Hope to CU in CU October 20–21, 2023.
We continue to march for dear old Illini and hope you will join us for any and all events this season. Our ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE continues to spill over with a remarkable season and year upon us. Take care, stay well, and GO ILLINI!
With True Illini Spirit!
Barry L. Houser Director of Marching Illini Associate Director of Bands Chair, Conducting AreaMARCHING ILLINI ON THE ROAD
Band #154 had an action-packed travel schedule throughout the Fall 2022 semester and into the New Year! Performances included a parade, exhibitions, travel to an away game, and an unforgettable bowl trip. After only two weeks of classes, the Marching Illini traveled north to Pontiac, Illinois, to perform in the annual Threshermen’s Labor Day Parade on Sunday, September 4. The MI marched directly from the parade route to Pontiac High School to perform pregame; their first halftime show of the season, Flying Illini; and Three-in-One. To close the performance, the Pontiac High School Marching Band joined the Marching Illini on the field for a joint performance of “Hey Baby.”
The MI loaded up the buses again on September 17 to travel to the Chicagoland Marching Band Festival at Wheeling High School. The Marching Illini performed our traditional pregame show followed by a halftime show as an exhibition for a packed stadium of high school band students and supporters prior to the festival awards ceremony. Performing for an enthusiastic crowd of high school bands is always a rewarding experience for the MI students.
On Sunday, September 25, the Marching Illini traveled to Soldier Field to perform halftime at the Chicago Bears game. While waiting to perform for the sold-out crowd, members of the MI hung out with Staley Da Bear while he showed off his trumpet playing skills!
The Marching Illini departed Champaign for Ann Arbor, Michigan on the morning of November 18, to support our team at the Illinois–Michigan game. The MI and Michigan Marching Band combined to perform a thrilling halftime show entitled, Life is an Adventure: The Music of Hans Zimmer. Friday evening, with nearly 800 students on the field, the two bands rehearsed in Michigan Stadium and then shared dinner together in Revelli Hall. It was a memorable trip, capped off by
driving through snowstorms and frigid temperatures! Check out the epic and unforgettable performance on YouTube: https://youtu.be/JK3n1Ikj-sA.
To close our exciting season, the Marching Illini loaded up nine charter buses one final time to travel to the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa, Florida! The MI stayed in a beautiful hotel directly on Clearwater Beach! Prior to gameday, the band performed in a Beach Bash pep rally and a Battle of the Bands with the Mississippi State Famous Maroon Band at Busch Gardens. In addition to our performances, the MI spent a day at Busch Gardens, and then rang in 2023 with a New Year’s Eve Bowl Bash—complete with dancing, games, snacks, a sundae bar, and photo booth. On gameday, the band participated in several pep rallies prior to kick-off, and performed pregame and halftime. During the game, the MI honored Mississippi State’s head football coach, Mike Leach (nicknamed “The Pirate”) who had recently passed away, by performing music from Pirates of the Caribbean
The members of the Marching Illini are incredibly grateful for the many travel opportunities afforded to them throughout the 2022–2023 season, which were enhanced by the generosity of our supporters. We look forward to joining together with the Minnesota Marching Band for the Illinois–Minnesota game in November 2023!

After the final rousing chords of “Revised Entrance No. 3,” faded into the charged air of the ReliaQuest Bowl, I heard the usual, always-welcoming roar from the Illinois faithful. And behind me, I heard cowbells. These weren’t band parents from the next town over at a regional high school competition cheering on their friend’s kid. I doubt most had seen the Marching Illini perform before. Yet the Mississippi State fans were rattling their cowbells. For the Marching Illini. Right then, I truly experienced what I’ve long known about band people: it doesn’t matter what colors you wear; they will support you no matter what. The bowl trip had many other highlights—a presidential-esque police escort, the sunset flash of a dolphin fin off Clearwater Beach, performances for fans and strangers alike at Busch Gardens and on the white sand—but the welcoming, unrelenting, clanking chorus of the Famous Maroon Band and their supporters’ cowbells rings for me still.
Outside Raymond James Stadium, as we were loading up the bus after the game, sweaty and with the sting of the loss still palpable, the Famous Maroon Band rushed over to us to exchange ball caps. (Special shoutout to Emma, the current clarinetist and future optometrist from Tennessee, whose Mississippi State FMB hat I’ve inherited. I will wear it with pride.) The connection band kids share goes beyond the base levels of “sportsmanship”—each of us share similar chapters of our lives written in countless lamina of sunscreen, chipped reeds and worn stick tape, devastating defeats and triumphant victories. And now, sweaty ball caps.
If Illinois becomes bowl-eligible, members of the Marching Illini will travel with the team in late December or January.
SUPPORT ILLINOIS BANDS
YOUR GIFT MATTERS
For 155 years, our bands have developed a storied history with an important role to play across the entire University of Illinois campus and beyond. Your support in the form of financial donations plays a critical role in important program enhancements that we continue to make available for our outstanding students, staff, and faculty. Over the years, we have gained new instruments, scholarships, facilities upgrades, technology, and general program support and continue to do so with your loyal help!
Please come join us at Homecoming or drop in to see how great our beloved Harding Band Building looks and sounds. In our main hallway, we proudly display a growing list of Illinois Band Loyalty Society donors. In addition to gifts of $500 and above, we display the names of those who have shared an estate bequest or planned gift to Illinois Bands. We hope you will help us maintain our excellent band program through your personal donation. If you would like to learn more about the impact your financial contributions can make, please don’t hesitate to contact me with your questions regarding support for Illinois Bands.
Sincerely,
DAVID ALLEN, ’92, ’94, ’96 (Trombone) Director of Advancement (217) 333-6453, allend@illinois.eduOF 155 YEARS OF ILLINOIS BANDS, PLEASE HELP US ADD 155 NEW NAMES TO OUR LOYALTY SOCIETY!
Our Loyalty Society recognizes the generous donors who give $500 or more in support of Illinois Bands each year.
We encourage you to support one or both of our two main funds: our Illinois Bands Loyalty Annual Fund which supports all facets of our Illinois Bands program from the Marching Illini to our various concert ensembles, including the Illinois Wind Symphony, Wind Orchestra, Hindsley Symphonic Band, Campus Band, University Band, and Summer Band; and the Marching Illini Fund, which supports operations for the Marching Illini. In addition, there are many other funds through which you can support Illinois Bands. Your support of any of these funds counts toward your inclusion in the Loyalty Society. For a complete list of funds, please visit www.bands.illinois.edu/giving.

Directors of the Marching Illini have always dreamed of the possibility of supporting their students at the highest level. We have received over $250,000 in gifts providing a foundation on which we can build. Ultimately, our goal is to build a $1,000,000 endowment, which will allow us to award a $500 scholarship to each of our senior members.
The Marching Illini Scholarship Fund will provide rewards to senior members of the band for their service and loyalty. We believe that building the future starts with rewarding Illinois Loyalty! Please consider making a gift to the Marching Illini Scholarship Fund today!
