The Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Studies requires a minimum of 120 hours. The minor in Architectural Studies allows students to gain an overview of architecture by taking a series of required courses in different disciplines within architecture. Our Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies is a four-year, non-accredited degree that offers a comprehensive introduction to design fields and prepares students for rigorous graduate work.

LICENSURE Each state sets their own requirements for licensure. The National Architecture Accrediting Board (NAAB) establishes minimum conditions that all professional architecture programs must meet but allows each program to design how best to deliver an architectural education. A professional degree program must be accredited by NAAB. These degrees are typically the B.Arch, M.Arch, or D.Arch. The School of Architecture at the University of Illinois is one of over 130 accredited architecture programs in the United States. General requirements all students must meet to become an architect: 1. Education—an NAAB-accredited degree 2. Experience—the Architect Experience Program, which documents your experience in the field 3. Examination—the Architect Registration Examination For information on requirements for the state in which you plan to practice, visit w ncarb.org.

CURRICULUM

Our Master of Architecture (M.Arch) degree is our NAAB-accredited degree. A Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies (BSAS) degree, like the one offered at Illinois, would allow admission to our 2-year M.Arch program as well as most other NAAB-accredited Master of Architecture programs in the United States.

RESOURCES

INTERNATIONAL IMMERSION The Illinois School of Architecture enables students to develop an informed perspective on architecture worldwide through international immersion in Barcelona, semester and summer exchange opportunities, and international studios. TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF CATALUNYA IN BARCELONA This program enables juniors and seniors to spend a semester or one year in residence and integrate into architecture studios and classrooms. See Barcelona through a student’s eyes via Elise Skulte’s travel blog. Elise studied in Barcelona for the full 2017–18 school year: w eskulte12.wixsite.com/archtravel.

Over the course of the school year, I stepped foot in over 12 different European countries and countless cities in Spain. I learned a lot about different cultures, architecture, and myself. Leaving the United States for the first time in my entire life and living over in Barcelona for a year, I really grew as a person. I ventured beyond my comfort zone and was rewarded for that in more ways than I could have imagined. Having indepth conversations with strangers from across the globe and standing on the edge of mountains, I saw the world with different eyes. The beauty that this earth has to offer is unreal, whether I may be admiring the manmade landscapes or the natural ones. Elise Skulte BSAS 2018

STUDENT SUCCESS

IA Interior Architects is a global firm of architects, designers, strategists, and specialists. We focus exclusively on environments through the lens of interior architecture. In my position as project manager, I experience the perfect mix of business strategy and design. I love having more control of the quantifiable elements of the project—budget, schedule—and also being able to oversee design from a higher level.
