COMMUNITY On or off campus, you’ll quickly notice that art and culture play a large role in the life of the community. The twin cities of Urbana and Champaign boast a combination of metropolitan culture and small-town charm that’s ideal for learning, living, creating, and exploring. From live music to area-wide arts festivals and small galleries to professional theatre productions, the arts scene is diverse and vibrant. Admission to most performances is free or reduced for students. CLUBS AND RECREATION Students have the opportunity to explore Registered Student Organizations and clubs at Illinois on Quad Day. Of the 1,600 organizations available, more than 100 are visual and performing arts related—you are sure to find one that matches your interests. State-of-the-art fitness facilities are available to all students, and the area’s many parks and preserves offer plenty of outdoor options, like fishing, biking, hiking, camping, running, and horseback riding. ENTERTAINMENT The campus area and surrounding communities are home to a wide selection of ethnic restaurants and international markets as well as movie theatres, bookstores, golf courses, bowling alleys, batting cages, boutiques, specialty shops, music venues, and nightclubs.

Choosing to study abroad was life-changing. I’ve traveled to other countries before, but living within the culture definitely enriched my understanding of the world. I’m a design student, and I now feel more confident as an artist and a designer after studying abroad in Italy. I just learned so much. ENGAGE NOW FAA SUMMER INTENSIVE
Immerse yourself in a one-week, college-level program and become part of a creative community of talented and serious artists from diverse backgrounds. The FAA Summer Intensive provides a perfect platform for high school students to learn about careers in the arts, create strong portfolio pieces, and get a true taste of college life. The broad curriculum allows students to choose an arts discipline for the week. Whether you want to hone an existing talent or sample new options, the FAA Summer Intensive has something for you. w go.illinois.edu/FAAsummer DISCOVER FAA HIGH SCHOOL TALENT COMPETITION: THE SELF PORTRAIT A portrait can communicate much more than a likeness, and in this competition there are few boundaries. Students are encouraged to explore personal identity, cultural differences, and all that makes them who they are. With a wide variety of media from which to select—painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography—it is up to each student to select how to best depict themselves. Digital work must be fully created by the artist (not a manipulation of an existing image). This annual competition is open to students in grades 9–12. Senior awards include scholarships to attend the University of Illinois. Other awards include scholarships to attend the FAA Summer Intensive. Visit w go.illinois.edu/FAAcompetitions for registration information and entry deadlines.

PORTFOLIO RUNDOWN
UPON APPLICATION, ALL ART AND DESIGN MAJORS REQUIRE PORTFOLIO SUBMISSION
PORTFOLIO CHECKLIST • Have you made note of the portfolio deadlines? w go.illinois.edu/FAAdeadlines • Edit your portfolio down to 10 pieces that you consider your best work. • The portfolio portal is separate from your MyIllini portal. You’ll need to create a log in and password to submit at w go.illinois.edu/ArtPortfolio. WHY ARE PORTFOLIOS REQUIRED? Talent is important to us. This is a good thing! This allows us to see all that is you—academic profile, essays, test scores, and talent. Each area is weighed equally. All portfolios are also reviewed by faculty for scholarship consideration. Our faculty recognizes that some high school students may not have extensive experience or be able to pursue areas of artistic interest due to location. Passion, commitment, intelligence, and imagination are as important as experience. If you have a strong interest in a program, we encourage you to clearly articulate this passion in your essay, and submit the material you have available.
NEXT STEPS
Your portfolio does not need to represent your intended major—it can show your range of interests. If you are unsure which Art & Design major you’d like to declare, you may apply to Art Undeclared-FAA. This gives you an extra year before you’ll be asked to declare a major but allows you to begin taking art courses your freshman year.
