FAA SUMMER INTENSIVE Immerse yourself in a one-week, college-level program and become part of a creative community of talented and serious artists from diverse backgrounds. The Summer Intensive at the College of Fine & Applied Arts at Illinois provides a perfect platform for high school students to learn about careers in the arts, create strong portfolio pieces, make new friends, and get a true taste of college life. Whether you want to hone an existing talent or sample new options, the FAA Summer Intensive has something for you.
DISCOVER ARCHITECTURE Discover Architecture introduces high school students to the built environment through hands-on studio exercises in drawing, graphics, and modeling. During the two-week program, students explore the architectural design process and learn how architects, as creative professionals, must be environmentally responsible designers. Students who participate in Discover Architecture experience a university atmosphere complete with campus living, faculty lectures, and studio work.
ILLINOIS SUMMER YOUTH MUSIC For more than 70 years, ISYM has helped young musicians improve their artistry, strengthen their self-confidence, and embark on professional careers. Junior and senior high students perform in large ensembles, attend intensive specialized instrumental programs, or explore contemporary music genres such as rock band, hip-hop, jazz, or musical theater. FAA SUMMER INTENSIVE June 21–27 Registration Deadline: May 1 At this immersive, week-long program, each student selects a track. Current FAA faculty members, graduate students, and recent FAA alumni teach classes Monday–Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with fun evening activities throughout the week. Eligibility and Placement Students at all ability levels who will have completed their freshman, sophomore, or junior year of high school by summer 2020 are invited to apply. A short essay describing your interest in FAA Summer Intensive is required. Students are admitted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Housing and Meals Students may commute or spend one week in shared air-conditioned rooms in campus residence halls. Three meals per day are served in the dining halls.
Fees Program deposit with application: $50 (non-refundable) Residential program fee: $700 (includes instruction, evening activities, housing, and meals) Commuter program fee: $500 (includes instruction, evening activities, and lunch and dinner Monday–Friday) Additional course supply fees vary. After admission, each student receives a list of supplies and their costs.

FAA SUMMER INTENSIVE TRACKS Acting Track: Acting, Improv Students will participate in rigorous acting, voice and speech, movement, and scene study classes to learn the art of acting for the stage. During the program, teens will refine and perform audition pieces and theatrical scenes that will be showcased at the open house. Students will also explore improvisation and learn techniques through coaching and warm-up exercises that will build confidence and improve theatrical performance skills.
Dance Intensive Track: Contemporary, Ballet, African, Musical Theatre Dance Styles In this track, teens will join the faculty and students of one of the strongest and oldest dance programs in the country. Students will be immersed in intense technical training in modern dance and ballet. Additional styles such as African, musical theatre dance styles, jazz, and hip-hop, will also be woven into the curriculum. A challenging modern dance piece choreographed by a summer faculty member will be rehearsed during the week and performed at the open house.
Design Track: Graphic Design, Industrial Design Are you interested in learning about graphic design or industrial design? These are two of our most popular art and design majors at Illinois. Whether you make a poster for your favorite band or create a logo for an unnamed coffee shop, you’ll learn basic graphic design concepts using Adobe Illustrator. In the industrial design segments, you’ll create a product and gain handson experience with laser cutting, CNC routing, and 3D printing. You’ll learn about concepting, collaborative brainstorming, sketching, and prototyping by problem solving through the Design Track. You’ll create multiple portfolio pieces and display your work in the art exhibit in Link Gallery at the end of the week.
Environmental Arts Track: Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Sustainable Design, Urban and Regional Planning The Environmental Arts Track is for students who are interested in solving environmental design challenges in architecture, landscape architecture, sustainability, and urban and regional planning. In this intriguing hands-on program, students
will form mock firms to collaborate and solve problems in environmental science, architectural engineering, and design technology. By working on projects and taking campus excursions, you will: • Strengthen your abilities and gain knowledge about professional fields of study • Demonstrate critical thinking, curiosity, adaptability, and initiative • Appreciate the skills and imagination needed to design, create, and use technologies • Explore architecture, landscape architecture, sustainability, and urban and regional planning In this project-based track, each student will display their completed work for the exhibition at the end of the week.
Studio Arts Track: Drawing, Painting,
Sculpture
This track is for fine artists! Students will explore acrylic paint in its more traditional form as well as its not-so-traditional experimental uses. These will include working with gels and pastes and incorporating collage into a final mixed-media creation. Students will enhance their abilities in techniques such as shading, controlling tones, composition, and drawing methods and draw indoors and outdoors. Through sculpture, students will create a three-dimensional piece by carving and casting. If you have a passion for drawing, painting, and sculpture, this track is for you! You will create multiple portfolio-worthy pieces and display your work in an exhibit at Link Gallery at the end of the week.
Theatre Tech and Design Track: Scenic and Lighting Design, Props, Stage Management
Experience Illinois Theatre backstage! Students will explore what it means to work “behind the scenes” in theatre. Discover the skills and techniques you need to successfully put up a show. Gain hands-on experience in a variety of backstage jobs such as lighting design, scenic design, props design, and stage management. Participate in the open house and showcase and demonstrate what you learned. *Course descriptions are subject to change. Courses may have an additional course fee or required supplies.

DISCOVER ARCHITECTURE July 12–25 Registration Deadline: May 11 Studio design projects supplemented with seminars, demonstrations, presentations, films, and a Chicago field trip give students hands-on experience and insight into what will be expected of them in college and in the profession of architecture. Discover Architecture emphasizes the design process in the studio as School of Architecture instructors demonstrate and discuss architectural work. Throughout the two weeks, students experience campus living while completing a series of design projects. Additional Opportunities On a day-long field trip to Chicago, students take a walking tour to experience the architecture at street level, participate in a boat tour of the city to see it from a different vantage point, and tour a local architectural firm.

Eligibility and Placement For 70 years, ISYM has connected world-class faculty with junior high and high school musicians from across the country. At ISYM, each student finds a safe yet challenging environment where they can experience music making with other highly motivated musicians. Each program offers a spcialized course of study, including rehearsals, master classes, technique classes, electives, and more. Each week-long program culminates with a final performance that parents and family are encouraged to attend. From orchestra to rock band, musical theater to hip-hop, ISYM engages students in diverse music making opportunities that reflect the exciting landscape of the 21st century music scene.
Student Life ISYM participants live and dine at Pennsylvania Avenue residence hall, gaining the full U of I living experience, which is centered around building community. In the evenings, students explore campus life through a variety of activities, such as bowling at the Illini Union or shopping on historic Green Street. Through numerous community-building activities, our outstanding counselor staff helps cultivate friendships among participants that often last far beyond their short time on the U of I campus.
