FALL NEWSLETTER 2020
ILLINOIS BANDS DURING COVID-19 Dear Friends, This August, we enthusiastically welcomed hundreds of Illinois Bands students back to campus, both face-to-face and online. Truly, this is a most unusual time! This newsletter comes to you a bit later than usual, and in a different format, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic we are all facing. We wanted to wait until the semester had begun to “flesh out” a bit more about how things look this fall so we could report the most up-to-date information possible. Additionally, you will note that this year’s Illinois Bands newsletter is coming to you electronically. Given current budget uncertainties, this was the most responsible thing to do. We hope to return to our normal format next fall.
IN THIS ISSUE 1 Greetings 2 Illinois Bands Faculty & Staff 3 Graduate Teaching Assistants 5 Illinois Bands Events 8 Alumni & Homecoming 10 Marching Illini 15 Illinois Bands Concert Schedule & Awards 16 Support Illinois Bands 17 Donors
Things look and feel different in Harding right now. I can look outside and see empty (yes, empty!) parking spots on Sixth Street, and the traffic in our building feels more like midJune than the first week of classes. Traffic patterns have been set, rehearsal spaces are sociallydistanced, only those who have passed a COVID-19 test are allowed in the building, and, most sadly, students are prevented from meeting and spending time together in the historic Harding Band Building. Yet the faculty worked hard all summer to present the best product we can to our students. We are extremely happy to be back, and are looking forward to developing unique ways to approach the challenges COVID-19 has presented. The Marching Illini is meeting as an online course this fall. And even though the Big Ten is now going ahead with football games, they decided not to allow any bands in the stadiums—a huge disappointment for us all. Look for more details about Athletic Bands from Barry Houser inside this newsletter. Unfortunately, only our “music major” bands are able to meet this fall. These are the ensembles that our students need in order to graduate. Other non-major ensembles have been put “on hold” in order to keep our students as safe as possible. The Illinois Wind Symphony, Wind Orchestra, and Hindsley Symphonic Band are all meeting in groups between five and twenty—no more than twenty people in Harding 141 to keep all of us as safe as possible. These smaller ensembles will use our larger rehearsal spaces, as well as outside spaces, for rehearsal this fall. Additionally, we are offering a “virtual concert band” for those students who do not wish to participate in our face-to-face small ensembles. Drs. Beth Peterson and Anthony Messina are heading up this large project. So, while many things are different, there will still be music emanating from Harding, and we will continue to do our very best to give our students the richest experience possible. As always, and especially during these times of economic uncertainty, we will truly rely on your support of our programs and students. Meanwhile, you can see through this newsletter that we continue to move forward for the sake of our students, alumni, and university. Here’s to better, safer times ahead! We look forward to seeing you again soon. Sincerely, STEVE PETERSON

THE 50TH ANNUAL ILLINOIS MARCHING BAND CHAMPIONSHIPS CANCELLED FOR 2020 We made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Illinois Band Day (September 12, 2020) and the 50th annual Illinois Marching Band Championships (October 10, 2020).

IllInOIS MaRCHInG BanD CHaMPIOnSHIPS
There are many factors that weighed heavily in these decisions, but ultimately, both decisions were driven by the health, safety, and well-being of high school and middle school band students throughout the State of Illinois as well as our University of Illinois students as our first priority.
We felt it would be irresponsible for Illinois to host two events that simply do not abide or adhere to the latest guidelines provided by the ISBE or the IBHE. None of us as music educators should bear the burden of being partially responsible for any of our students, parents, or other community members being impacted by this virus, directly or indirectly. It’s simply not worth it. As you can imagine, this decision is devastating to us on so many fronts, but it is the right one for this season. We Will Return. The following schools would have performed at this year’s Illinois Marching Band Championships had it not been cancelled due to COVID-19. CLASS 1A 1. Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond High School 2. ILLINOIS SUPERSTATE CONCERT BAND FESTIVAL To our deep regret, due to the extraordinary safety measures put in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were unable to hold the onsite portion of the 2020 SuperState Concert Band Festival this year. While we are more than disappointed that we won’t get to enjoy the performances of these excellent junior high/middle school and high school bands in person, we do want to celebrate their high level of recorded audio performances which enabled the out-of-state SuperState listening adjudicators to rank them at the top of their respective classes. Next year’s SuperState Concert Band Festival is scheduled for Friday–Saturday, May 7–8, 2021.

ALUMNI & HOMECOMING A MESSAGE FROM ILLINOIS BANDS ALUMNI PRESIDENT MAUREEN DURACK Greetings to our Band Alumni, families, friends, University of Illinois faculty, staff, and students! I hope this finds you well. Let me begin by thanking our Band Alumni Board volunteers for all of the work, ideas, and support that you provide to me, our Illinois Band program, and the band alumni. I would also like to thank Steve Peterson, Barry Houser, Joy McClaugherty, and the staff and faculty of the Illinois Bands and College of Fine and Applied Arts. Your hard work and dedication to this University and its students are unmatched and we appreciate what you do in True ILLINI Spirit. Thank you!
“ILLINI STUN WISCONSIN BADGERS!” Little did we know on that beautiful day last October, as we were all jumping around and celebrating the Illini Homecoming VICTORY over Wisconsin, that this memory will have to get us through another year. Although we will all miss the events of the Homecoming 2020 weekend, the Band Alumni are committed to supporting upcoming virtual events that Barry Houser and the Marching Illini are working on. We are excited about the opportunity to bring more of our alumni into the celebration with the flexibility that this virtual world provides. We are working with Barry and team to create a Band Alumni “Zoom Performance” much like you have seen from our MI and other bands, as well as other activities to be announced. For those who have already registered to participate in Homecoming 2020, your registration information will simply move to Homecoming 2021. Most of you have already received information regarding this and we appreciate your being a part of next year’s events. Please mark your calendars now for Homecoming 2021 on October 22 and 23: Illinois vs. Wisconsin!
BAND ALUMNI GO NATIONAL This past summer, the Illinois Band Alumni Board joined several other university and college band alumni groups to become a charter member of the National Association of Alumni Bands (NAoAB). This group was developed in cooperation with the College Band Directors National Association Athletic Band Committee which is led by none other than our own Barry Houser and provides a forum for band alumni programs to share experiences, best practices, and our love for music
and band. As an example, the NAoAB met this past July to discuss how university band programs were planning for the 2020 fall semester. We learned that some programs were already going virtual but that others had canceled alumni activities. This information provided our board with ideas as to how we may respond to various options then under review by the University and DIA. Recently, our Band Alumni Board member Jeff Roher has been named Southwest Regional Officer serving on the board of this national association. We are so pleased that Jeff has stepped up and is serving at this level as it will help our Alumni Board stay in the know regarding happenings at the national level and puts the University of Illinois in a great position to provide guidance and knowledge across the programs. More to come on activities that this new organization is sponsoring and how our members may participate.
Now
MORE THAN EVER: ALUMNI PARTICIPATION & ALUMNI SUPPORT! Throughout this newsletter, you will see information and updates regarding how our Illinois Bands program and university are responding to the pandemic and the 2020 fall semester. Early on, we all agreed that we needed to stop saying “instead of ” and start thinking about how we can all use this time that we have to enhance the learning and collegial experience of our students, alumni, and others. We are excited about opportunities for alumni to significantly contribute to this year’s programs by participating in the online teaching and special programming open to alumni, and to continue your support for our Marching Illini and all of our bands! Stay tuned for emails and announcements on new ways for you to be a part of the program and for some special initiatives around facilities! We are looking forward to all being together soon and wish that everyone be well and stay engaged in a most unusual and interesting 2020 season! GO ILLINI AND GO BAND! MARCHING ILLINI
A MESSAGE FROM THE MARCHING ILLINI DIRECTOR, BARRY L. HOUSER Greetings from the iconic and historic Harding Band Building! It is with great enthusiasm that I welcome you to the 2020 “virtual” edition of The Nation’s Premier College Marching Band, the Marching Illini. As we know, things have been different since March of 2020. It was the week of the Men’s Big Ten Tournament and twenty-nine students and myself were preparing to depart for Indianapolis just before the decision was made to cancel the tournament, then the NCAA tournament, followed by the University transitioning to a virtual format for the rest of the spring semester. Even during that time, I don’t think many of us thought we would be in the situation we are in now...a world of masks, gaiters with slits to allow for the playing of instruments, bell covers to mitigate droplets and aerosol dispersal, social distancing of six feet or more, and, of course, the stipulation by the state that we can have no more than fifty people gathering in one location or space at a time. I don’t believe A. A. Harding in his wildest dreams would have ever imagined his motto of “Always Something New” applying to these circumstances. Over the spring and summer, we moved quickly to construct a plan which included eighteen different scenarios to move the Marching Illini forward in some capacity with the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and faculty as our priority. As each day went by, more events were canceled or postponed along with Big Ten football, volleyball, soccer, and cross-country. We moved from the first scenario which included operating under the circumstances of business as usual to the seventeenth scenario, which is an all-virtual version of the Marching Illini with an original roster of 430-members. The current schedule for the Marching Illini includes a weekly rehearsal schedule of three days per week, sixty minutes per day. The curriculum includes the introduction and review of traditional pregame music, marching band fundamentals executed by the MI in pregame, halftime
and Three-In-One drill, educational clinics and sessions by Marching Health, diversity equity and inclusion workshops, history and traditions sessions, leadership sessions, and much more. We have taken our WHAT and reimagined HOW we can engage with our students through a virtual platform while passing on our institutional knowledge of what it means and takes to be a member of the Marching Illini. As alums and friends of this program, you know the Marching Illini is a very special organization which is respected and appreciated throughout the world! The system, energy, and culture created by the Marching Illini continues to contribute to the success of the University of Illinois, a leader in this world and an institution our fans, alums, and students are proud to be a part of. The members of the Marching Illini have shown their extreme dedication, intelligence, and talent during these challenging times. Once again, our students represent all academic disciplines across our great institution. We pride ourselves in putting on entertaining and first-rate performances and in the firstclass manner in which we represent the University of Illinois, both on and off the field. As director of the Marching Illini, along with our committed faculty and staff, we will do everything we can to continue to make this the Best Band in the Land while providing fans with the absolute best experiences now and again in the near future when we are able to take the field again. I hope you will return the favor and show your unending support for our outstanding students. They need your support more than ever... we have new students we have not met face-to-face, students that have never played THAT magical first note of Revised Entrance #3 or the incomparable Three-In-One. On the flip side, we have seniors who anticipated this season being the culmination of all of their time and work with the Marching Illini. Their last memories of performing as a member of the Marching Illini may come from last year’s victories against Wisconsin, Michigan State, and a phenomenal trip to California for the RedBox Bowl. Yes, amazing memories but this is not how any of us would want our final experiences to play out. Please help me as we,

YOUR GIFT MATTERS
SUPPORT ILLINOIS BANDS
For over 150 years, our Illinois Bands have celebrated a storied history with an important role to play across the entire University of Illinois campus and beyond. Your support in the form of financial donations plays a critical role in gaining program enhancements that are required for our exceptional students, staff, and faculty. In recent years, we have made great strides gaining new instruments, scholarships, facilities upgrades, technology, travel, and general program support. In the main hallway of the Harding Band Building, we proudly display a growing list of Illinois Band Loyalty Society donors. These special donors have shared gifts of $500 and above during the previous year. Also included on this prestigious list are those who have committed to an estate bequest or deferred gift to Illinois Bands. We hope you will help us continue to maintain this excellent band program through your financial support. To learn more about the impact your financial gifts can make, please do not hesitate to contact me with your questions regarding support for Illinois Bands. Sincerely, DAVID ALLEN Director of Advancement (217) 333-6453, allend@illinois.edu
WHILE WE’RE MARCHING ALONG LIFE’S PATHWAY… A couple of anonymous donors who regularly enjoyed Illinois football games, especially for the halftime performances by the Marching Illini, left a generous financial gift to the University of Illinois upon their recent deaths. The gift to the Marching Illini was more than $400,000 which Director Barry Houser plans to use as an investment in the future of the program. “On behalf of the entire Marching Illini, I want to say how grateful we are! A gift like this not only takes some of the worry out of planning and maintaining such an important program but can transform our future work in a very positive way. I only wish we could have met these incredibly generous people so we could personally say thank you in true Illini spirit,” said Director Houser about this gift. A family member shared that the donors were very private people who lived in a small Illinois town. “They were very humble and would never want others to feel uncomfortable by knowing about their financial assets.” As regular attendees of Illinois football, they were always particularly excited to see the Marching Illini performances during halftime. Eventually, the couple decided to make plans to support the Marching Illini, as well as the I-Fund in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, and a scholarship in the College of ACES. Their loyalty to Illinois also manifested itself in other ways. According to family, their gardens and cars were always orange and blue. One of the donors was a church organist and pianist who held a deep love and appreciation for music and was aware of the positive impact of philanthropy on music groups like the Marching Illini. Over many years, that love and appreciation for music spread throughout this family including siblings, nieces, and nephews, and is very strong today. We are grateful that this gift will have a positive impact on our students and staff of the Marching Illini for many years. Have you considered a planned gift in support of Bands and Music at Illinois? If you have, we can help in the coordination of your plans.
