University of Illinois Bands Fall Newsletter 2021

FALL NEWSLETTER 2021

Dear Alumni and Friends, As I write this letter, we are deep in preparations for a fall that we hope will be much closer to normal than last year. We are planning for all of our ensembles to be back full-force (and vaccinated!), and simply can’t wait to get going. All of our special events are back on track including Band Day, Illinois Marching Band Championships, the Illinois Band Conductors Symposium, SuperState Concert Band Festival. We will welcome hundreds of students—half of which will be new, to the hallowed halls of the historic Harding Band Building.

IN THIS ISSUE 1 Greetings 2 Illinois Bands Faculty & Staff 3 Graduate Teaching Assistants 4 Illinois Bands Encore 5 Illinois Bands Events 6 Alumni & Homecoming 7 Marching Illini 8 Marching Illini & Awards 9 Awards 10 Awards & Concert Schedule 11 Your Gift Matters

I am extremely proud of the work that occurred last year to accommodate the many students who still wanted to make live music. In the fall, we met in small ensembles, both inside and outside the building, and in other spaces across campus. Following all safety protocols, we were able to record final performances of the works we prepared and share them with parents and friends. In the spring, we rehearsed similar ensembles and were able to present a highly successful “Music on the Steps” concert outside of the Krannert Center. Both the students and the audience were very excited to be involved with live music again. Read more about the concert inside. It was a challenging year, and one that we not only “survived” but were able to continue with our traditions of excellent music-making. This would not have been possible without the hard work and flexibility of all of our faculty, graduate students, and staff. I am incredibly grateful to them all. We have a full slate of concert and athletic band appearances set for the year, including our Annual Homecoming Concert on Friday, October 8. Additionally, I’m happy to announce that the Illinois Wind Symphony has been asked to give a concert for the prestigious American Bandmasters Association on Thursday, March 3, at Butler University. The concert will feature past presidents and Illinois Band Directors James F. Keene and Gary Smith as guest conductors, among with others. We heartily encourage you to return to campus for a game or concert this year and reconnect with your Illinois Bands program. We are always grateful for the financial support of you, our alumni. We could not thrive without it. Please read through this newsletter for much more information about your Illinois Bands.

ILLINOIS BANDS ENCORE ENCORE ILLINOIS

During the height of the pandemic and for the start of the Spring 2021 semester, performing ensembles, especially bands and choirs, adhered to a strictly enforced set of protocols designed to keep students and faculty safe, thus making ensemble participation possible but different. Additionally, the conductors of these ensembles offered a “virtual” ensemble option called “ENCORE Illinois” so students who remained off campus could participate and earn their ensemble credit. Led by conducting faculty, ENCORE included a diverse group of expert panelists from around the country who asynchronously explored a variety of timely topics including entrepreneurship, careers in the arts, cultural sensitivity, and the composition process. Students were asked to select eight topics that interested them, submit questions to the expert panelists, and write a reflection of the presentation. The program was quite successful as it allowed faculty and students to explore these topics without the pressure of the next concert performance. The specific presentation titles included: Careers in Ensemble Singing; The Composition Commissioning Process; How to Start/Run/Get Involved with a Community-Based Music Organization/Ensemble; Rewards and Challenge of Making Music with People with Special Needs; Teaching Band, Choir and Orchestra in the Urban Setting; From Music Major to a Career in Arts Management; Cultural Sensitivity in the Arts; Exploring the Lifestyle, Career, and Audition Process in Military Ensembles for Instrumentalists and Vocalists; Full-Time Employment as a Musician: Teaching Private Lessons and Gigging; Recording Sessions: Listening with a Critical Ear; Musical Leadership: Are You Striving to Be Successful or Significant; Panel Discussion on Diversity and Race in the Collegiate Music World; I Wish Someone Had Told Me: Lessons Learned Since My First Rehearsal; Creating a Brave Space for the LGBTQ Community in your Large Ensemble Settings.

“I really enjoyed Encore this semester! I had an interview this morning and implemented a lot of the things I learned from the Encore videos.” — Liza Smith, graduate student and clarinetist

“I watched every video, and learned a great deal from each session. I appreciated the topics that were discussed, as well as the diverse panel of speakers. They talked about difficult topics, but they did so in a way that was meaningful, relatable, and helpful for future educators and musicians.” — Encore student

ILLINOIS BANDS EVENTS

ILLINOIS MARCHING BAND CHAMPIONSHIPS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2021

Join us this October 23rd for an amazing day of Illinois high school marching bands and your Marching Illini. You can learn more about this event and see who is participating at https://bands.illinois.edu/imbc

ILLINOIS SUPERSTATE CONCERT BAND FESTIVAL FRIDAY-SATURDAY, MAY 6-7, 2022 Due to the extraordinary safety measures put in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were again unable to hold the SuperState Concert Band Festival this spring. Next year’s SuperState Concert Band Festival is scheduled for FridaySaturday, May 6-7, 2022. Registration will open Wednesday, December 1, 2021. More information and deadlines can be found at https://www.bands.illinois.edu/superstate-2022-1

ILLINOIS BAND CONDUCTORS SYMPOSIUM

The event restrictions put in place because of COVID-19 meant that we were unable to hold our (traditionally) annual Illinois Band Conductors Symposium in 2021. Next year, we look forward to welcoming guest conductor Dr. Rodney Dorsey, Indiana University Director of Bands, February 18–19, 2022, for this two-day Dr. Rodney Dorsey symposium which includes conducting, rehearsal techniques, repertoire, pedagogy, and educational philosophy. ILLINOIS WIND SYMPHONY TO PERFORM AT PRESTIGIOUS AMERICAN BANDMASTERS ASSOCIATION CONVENTION The Illinois Wind Symphony, conducted by Stephen Peterson, has been invited to present a concert at the annual convention of the American Bandmasters Association on Thursday, March 3, 2022. This honor is reserved for the finest concert bands in the country. This, along with a performance by the IWS at the CBDNA Convention in Tempe in 2019, means that the Illinois Wind Symphony has appeared at both of the nation’s premiere association conventions in the past four years. The concert is open to the public and will be held on the campus of Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana. Illinois Bands Alumni are cordially invited to attend.

“MUSIC ON THE STEPS” CONCERT DRAWS HUNDREDS OF EAGER LISTENERS Because of COVID, our concert bands were limited to chamber groups last year. As a culminating event for the Spring semester, Illinois Bands presented a highly successful “Music on the Steps” concert outside of the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. The concert, held on April 30, lasted almost five hours, with hundreds of people stopping by to enjoy live music and tasty food truck fare on a rare perfect Illinois spring day. MARCHING ILLINI

A MESSAGE FROM THE MARCHING ILLINI DIRECTOR, BARRY L. HOUSER Greetings from the iconic and historic Harding Band Building! What a time it has been...606 days to be exact...from our last performance in 2019 to our first performance this season with our season opener against Nebraska. What a WIN, what a game, what an atmosphere. We are so grateful that we have been able to get the band back together again as we kick off the 153rd season of the Nation’s Premiere College Marching Band, the Marching Illini. The system, energy, and culture of excellence that is created by the Marching Illini continues to enhance the University of Illinois and the experience of our fans, friends, alumni, and students. As we start this season with True Illini Spirit and an ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE, I want to thank you for contributing to our March Forth campaign. This year’s campaign smashed all previous fundraising records for this event! Your generous donations are being used daily and will benefit MI students for years to come. Once again, we have a busy year ahead—our complete schedule can be found at https://marchingillini.com, and in this newsletter. This season, the Marching Illini will proudly be sporting NEW UNIFORMS. The overall look of the new uniforms reflect a similar look to years past, however there is a “tip-of-the hat” to each uniform worn by members of the Marching Illini from our early beginnings. The previous jacket design incorporated a double-breasted look with buttons on the side. Those buttons have now been moved back to the center to honor the first jackets worn by the band and have been replaced with silver custom buttons with the University of Illinois Bands seal. The gauntlets have been replaced with orange-trimmed sleeves, and the “BLOCK I” now appears on the front of the shako, along with a silver chain, silver buttons, and a navy blue plume. The traditional cape, double-sided baldric, and bibbers remain the same. We are very excited about this new look and are grateful to the Chancellor’s Office, the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics, and our Band Alumni whose support made these new uniforms possible. Each year, a specific amount of money is transferred to a uniform account to support the purchase of new uniforms every ten years.

Tunnel and hear a new “Oskee Fanfare” to kick-off our Pregame show. Plans are currently underway for a return to Dublin, Ireland for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade along with a full tour of the Emerald Isle. For more information, visit https://marchingillini.com. Finally, we celebrate a historic event in our 153-year history—the 50th anniversary of admitting women to the Marching Illini. This celebration will take place during Homecoming weekend as we welcome back all alumni to celebrate the many women who have impacted, and continue to impact, our great organization in a halftime show entitled Celebrating 50 Years of Women in the Marching Illini: The Queens of Music. Music will include Aretha Franklin, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, and many more. We hope you will join us for this moment as well as celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Illinettes Dance Team. This is another event you will NOT want to miss! We are marching for dear ole’ Illini and hope that you will join us for at least one of these events this season. Our ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE is spilling over with a remarkable season upon us. Take care, stay well, and GO ILLINI! With True Illini Spirit! Barry L. Houser Associate Director of Bands Director of Marching Illini

In the spirit of A.A. Harding’s motto of “Always Something New,” you will notice a couple of other exciting changes this year in our pregame show. In a nod to past traditions, a fifteen-member B1G Ten Flags section will make their return to the Marching Illini. Each member is holding a specific flag representing one of fourteen institutions of the conference with the 15th flag unifying the conference under the B1G conference flag. In addition, you will notice an entrance from the South

YOUR GIFT MATTERS SUPPORT ILLINOIS BANDS For over 150 years, our bands have developed a storied history with an important role to play across the entire University of Illinois campus and beyond. Your support in the form of financial donations plays a critical role in integral program enhancements that we continue to make available for our exceptional students, staff, and faculty. In recent years, we have been able to gain new instruments, scholarships, facilities upgrades, technology, and general program support in an unprecedented way. If you haven’t visited the Harding Band Building for a while, we suggest that you drop in to see how great it looks and sounds. We are also proud to display a growing list of Illinois Band Loyalty Society donors in the main hallway. In addition to gifts of $500 and above, we have included those who have committed to an estate bequest or deferred gift to Illinois Bands on this important list. We hope you will help us maintain our historic band program through your financial support. If you would like to learn more about the impact your support can make, please don’t hesitate to contact me with your questions regarding support for Illinois Bands. Sincerely, DAVID ALLEN Director of Advancement, (217) 333-6453, allend@illinois.edu

ALWAYS SOMETHING NEW We are thrilled to announce the establishment of a new endowment for Illinois Bands. The James F. Keene Bands Commission Fund has just been established in honor of former Director of Bands James F. Keene. During his tenure at Illinois (1985–2008), Professor Keene was a champion for new works for the wind band and his vision for Illinois Bands included growing the modern band repertoire. In the spirit of A.A. Harding’s motto, “Always Something New,” this fund will help the faculty of Illinois Bands as they continue to commission new works by outstanding composers. If you wish to honor Professor Keene and help provide new music for future generations of bands, please make your donation to the University of Illinois Foundation for the benefit of the James F. Keene Bands Commission Fund. Please contact David Allen at allend@illinois. edu if you have any questions.

WHERE IT STARTED... AND NEVER STOPS We encourage you to support one of our two main funds: our Annual Loyalty Fund, which supports all facets of our Illinois Bands program from the Marching Illini to our various concert ensembles, including the Illinois Wind Symphony, Wind Orchestra, Hindsley Symphonic Band, Campus Band, University Band, and Summer Band; and the Marching Illini Band Fund, which supports all aspects of operations for the Marching Illini. In addition, there are many other funds through which you can support Illinois Bands. For a complete list of funds, please visit www.bands.illinois.edu/giving
