GERRY BANNAN: PEACEABLE KINGDOM Thursday, May 9-Saturday, June 1, 2019 Ruth C. Horton Gallery Until recently, Gerry Bannan’s virtuosic ballpoint pen on Mylar still life drawings focused on his re-imagination of the 16thand 17th-century vanitas still life tradition. This exhibition presents a new body of work in which Bannan ventures into new territory, watercolor on Yupo, a brilliant white Japanese watercolor paper. In this new body of work, the artist, in addition to color, introduces birds, plants, and other small creatures in vivid, meticulously-rendered tableaux of forest and riverbank scenes. Rendered with a rich, almost sumptuous density of color and intricate detail, these works, in the artist’s words, “seek to engage the viewer with wonder and curiosity.” In contemplating Bannan’s works, viewers are invited into both a real and imagined—and often overlooked—portion of the natural world.
