Welcome
Welcome to Harleston
Harleston is a small town nestled in the Waveney Valley. It is a great location for visiting the Norfolk Broads, seaside and the historic city of Norwich. There are many local walks, nearby fishing lakes and a great leisure centre with recreation ground. Harleston is on a national cycle route and we welcome many cyclists as they stop for a rest and refreshments.

Harleston holds a Wednesday market which has been running since 1259. It has been wonderful to see optimism returning as our town emerges from the restrictions imposed due to the spread of Covid. Local volunteer groups are once again organising events, which include the Harleston and Waveney Festival, antiques market and evening street party, food festival, beer festival and the marvellous Christmas market and lights switch-on. Beautiful flags adorn the shops and are changed regularly in line with different events or themes throughout the year. As the town awakens from slumber with renewed vigour, other events are being suggested and considered. A current list can be found on the Town Calendar on the Town Council website.
We will be planting trees in the cemetery of St Marys Church as part of the Green Canopy as a way of helping nature recover from years of neglect. Pride of place will be a Pilgrim 400 apple tree, which has been gifted to the Town Council from Nottinghamshire County Council and Bassetlaw District Council due to our association with the famous event through the local Fuller family. These trees were specially created to commemorate the 400 year anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower ship to America.
Harleston provides a habitat for swifts to stay during their visit to the country and has delightful open countryside nearby. There are many opportunities for us all to help the recovery of our natural environment in the post Covid world to make Harleston an even better place to live, work and visit.
The town is home to many independent shops, cafes and restaurants all seeking to cater for the needs of both local people and visitors. There is a proposal for significant investment in the town centre with a new design that will give priority to the pedestrian and make visiting and shopping an even more enjoyable experience. The Market Place would become a space for people to meet up and socialise and for holding more events. Harleston retains free parking and provides a perfect place for a very pleasant day shopping and a bite to eat or something to drink.
More details of events and more, can be found on our website: www.harleston-tc.gov.uk. Please subscribe to our newsletter for updates and current information relating to our town.
Welcome to Harleston, we hope to see you soon.
