DID YOU KNOW? It takes 199 steps to reach the top of 54-metre-high clock tower (completed in 1905). The clock tower cost $6,000 to build back in 1905. A similar construction today would cost $2 million! With a total weight of 5000 kg, the 5 bells are inscribed with SS Benlendi, the name of the ship that delivered them to Singapore. The clock still chimes the popular Westminister chime, similar to that of Big Ben in London. It chimes every 15 minutes with each quarter playing a part of the melody; the full melody can be heard at the full hour. In the past, a clock winder was employed to maintain the clock’s mechanism every 4 days. In 2014, an automatic mechanism was installed during the building’s restoration.
