From his Wood Studio on the Lizard, Samvado offers natural pieces in wood, stone and metal to celebrate local trees, rocks and minerals. Samvado’s work brings the pull of the forest and landscape home. Grain and grit to be read like a story of life, in the twists and folds and annual rings. Cast bronze and stainless steel from the fire of imagination explore form and formlessness. Hundreds of pieces are on display including bowls, dishes, and platters, small to large, wild to functional. Visitors can buy ‘melting’ wood pieces, or bowls and books made of local serpentine. Pieces to enhance any home, garden or patio. Open Tuesday - Sunday 10am - 6pm. Year round but phone if making a special journey.

Art Spread interviewed Eve Bourrat who runs the Sketch Club to ask her a few questions:
Sketch Club offer regular 1 hour drop-in sessions to loosen up and practice drawing. Cost £3/session (no membership fees - no subscription). Go along, take your own drawing pens and sketch books (or paper) and get to meet other creative people in the area... For more information visit www.sketchclubfalmouth.com
What was the original motive/aim/attempt to build Sketch Club? The main goal was to provide a meeting point for people to practice drawing on a regular basis. Loads of artists, or creative practitioners, sole traders, freelancers or art graduates feel isolated when in employment for instance staying behind a desk, using modern technology... the purpose was to move from square screens to paper canvas and revisit the fundamental essence of drawing for at least an hour each week. What was the initial response you received towards the Sketch club? Very positive indeed... The popularity grew to a great extent and the activities diversified with it. Doing group exhibitions, sharing studio spaces for a weekend, inviting local establishments and people to participate to our sessions... What did you encounter that you didn’t expect? The core audience/participants are not the professional creative practitioners that was expected originally. Sketch Club attracts people from very different backgrounds, even some who had never drawn before. There is a great mix of skills, abilities, approaches and level of experience. It’s actually a real pleasure to see everyone coming together to exchange and enjoy the practice of sketching... And I can say whoever feels unconfident at first usually makes progress very quickly. I am / have been on the contrary so busy managing the large number of visitors that I hardly have time to sketch!! How do people get involved with the Sketch Club? People can just drop in to our weekly gathering. No need to book! Just consult the website to find out where the next 10-11am (or occasionally 6-7pm) Wednesday session is going to be held. Bring your own paper or sketch book and favourite pen or pencil with you. Cost is £3 per participants for each session, without any membership or subscription to follow. Anyone who asks can receive our e-newsletter.
08
What could someone expect from visiting a typical event? A warm welcome from all of us and to meet quite a few people. A very relaxed sketching practice with some loosening up exercises and longer tasks involving more concentration. It doesn’t follow a strict or elitist teaching model. The aim is to free people up for them to enjoy a very accessible and rewarding activity I believe. A lot of our ‘sketchers’ are probably working as we speak. I know for a fact, someone who is at this time drawing parts of Australia while away visiting family. It awakes a hobby, a passion for a lot of people.
What do you think the Sketch Club means to the community at present? It has and does benefit the community in many ways by breaking isolation, offering an activity which is accessible without any commitments assigned, supporting some people in their career and choice of education, providing a source of contacts, information and a platform for promotion/visibility, developing new project ideas amongst locals etc... And obviously it encourages creativity and self-expression with all the benefits that come with it … There is a great sense of support and exchange within our ever growing group.
Do you have any specific plans for the future? Well the project has a very flexible development approach and Sketch Club has grown its purpose from the very beginning with regular e-newsletters, networking opportunities, events, support and collaborative projects etc... The participants themselves have started to run some of the sessions with their own briefs. It’s a great asset for the club offering a much wider range of practice and subjects. It also gives people the chance to boost their confidence and gain experience for themselves. With around 200 individuals (so far) who regularly or partially attend / have attended our activities there is a great diversity of skills and knowledge being shared. How would you describe your vision and realisations for the Sketch Club? The Sketch Club is and will remain a community social enterprise. It gives mutual benefits to the club itself and the local community especially for the public venues we visit. These social values are what makes it work so well. I just want to grow even more the amount of opportunities, projects, ideas and partnership for all Sketch Club’s participants and contributors.

My interest in drawing and painting began at an early age – when my mother started encouraging me to draw on the walls I realised I must be doing something right! My work is extremely varied including all manner of subjects and mediums, but my strongest passion lies in portraiture and quirky illustrative pieces. Over the past 10 years I have also developed and perfected my ‘smoke art’ technique, where I capture layers of smoke on wood to produce portraits such as the one shown below.

Something fantastic you can do with your plastic... Have you got a few shopping bags stuffed in a cupboard somewhere and fancy getting a bit creative? Plarn is a brilliant way to re-use plastic bags that would otherwise contribute to polluting our oceans and taking up space in land fill sites. Plarn is essentially yarn made from cutting up and looping together plastic strips, this can then be used for knitting, plaiting, weaving and crochet!
High amounts al, materi of plastic stic bags, la p y especiall und blocking fo n e d e b e hav sages an thing pas the brea of many marine s stomach cluding whales, in , s ie c e p uffins, s , seals, p dolphins turtles. and
Marine wildlife often gs mistake plastic ba lly cia pe es , od for fo sea turtles hunting jellyfish.
Pla bag stic for an s are used minut average of plastic es, but a sin 12 g b life ex ag can ha le ve a pecta to 1,0 ncy of up 00 ye ars.
How to make your plarn... 1 Lay out your plastic bag on a flat surface making sure that the seams meet around the edges.
2 Now fold up your plastic bag lengthways in half and then half again and then again once more so that you end up with a long rectangle of a few inches wide.
14
3 Snip off the top and bottom sections of your bag strip so that you are completely removing the handles and the parts where the bottom of the bag meet to form the base.
4 Cut the long strip into equal sections, each section can be as narrow or wide as you wish depending on how thick you require your yarn.
5 Each section should fold out into a large plastic loop, these loops can then be threaded through each other to create a continuous thread!
You are now ready to begin knitting or using your yarn as desired, more detailed instructions and videos can be found on the internet along with project ideas and existing creations. How about attempting to make a bag for life created from all those unwanted plastic bags, you’ll probably be asking friends for their bags too as its surprising how quickly they can be used up!

My love for ocean and surf photography grew from my addiction to surfing and the beauty of the ocean. Growing up by the sea has driven that obsession and living in Kernow the past 6 years and my travels around the globe has helped fuel that obsession.

I have tried many different techniques and different approaches to pot making, however, my main focus has been with coiled work and experimenting with burnishing and smoke firing. African design has inspired my imagination over the years and has been a major influence in my creative process. My work varies from burnished smoke fired pots to everyday functional tableware as well as some decorative pieces. Also, in the last ten years I’ve held workshops at festivals and schools where I taught the basics of pot making as well as teaching students how to construct cob/clay wood fired kilns and the process of firing. I am presently being commissioned by St Ives Brewery and arranging to organise some new workshops for the summer.

I’ve been creating art in various forms for over 10 years. For the last 2 years I have had the honour of putting my art permanently on peoples skin in the form of machine free handpoke tattoos. I have dabbled in many things over the years from fine portrait painting and Trompe L’oeil murals to costume making and large scale live art and decor. I still do these things now and again but my latest artwork and the tattooing really feels like my calling. My artwork is also available to buy including the latest collaborations with Splund. I am based in Cornwall, UK and sometimes travel to Bristol and Brighton to tattoo. I design bespoke tattoos for my clients and am available for commissions and live art at events.

UMBrEllA rEVOlUtiOn Thousands of Chinese protesters took to the streets in protest against a decision on proposed reforms to the Hong Kong electoral system in September 2014. The movement was initiated by a group called Occupy Central With Love & Peace, led by a Hong Kong University law professor and has taken its name from participants using umbrellas to protect themselves against the use of pepper spray.
Leo Sav is a Falmouth based artist who has been in Hong Kong for several months, creating artworks amidst the political umbrella revolution. “I camped at occupy central during the main thrust of the movement. I took some photos of protesters and let people draw and add to the pictures that I worked upon. One great collaborator was an 8 year old girl called Cherie. I am going to get these images blown up and then paint over them. I want to paint the images so that the protesters become a part of the
22
work and the work becomes a part of the individual as they merge with the paintings. I want the work to embody a feeling- no specific, overt political message as I just want to offer people feelings and energies that are open to the interpretation of the individual. It is about capturing a feeling for the people and for the energy of the place. The fact that so much colour and positive social expression could be embodied within the occupy central movement is testament to the young people of Hong Kong.

About leo sav
My illustrative paintings seek to present the world of impermanence and fleeting beauty. By combining iconic Art Deco design elements with Japanese and Korean motifs, I hope to lift the viewer into a contemplative world, rich in colour, texture and emotion. Another influence within the work is the eclectic and prominent Art Deco design movement of the 1920’s and 30’s. I have lived and travelled extensively in the far east. I studied Fine Art at Central St Martins School of Art and Design. I also studied at the design school Ecole Nationale Superieure de Arts Decoratifs in Paris. I am also interested in the role of aesthetics in political culture.

Ed is an Oil Painter and Illustrator and has been working since the late 90’s. Largely self taught, he works from home. His subjects in terms of Illustration are generally twofold. The first is a series depicting his personal symbology concerning dreams and nightmares. The second string though not shown here, is an illustrative series of pen drawings set in a world called Etimret that sits on the edge of Steam Punk in its sensibilities, with a touch of Gormanghast for good measure. His oil work is totally different from the illustrative, paper based work. It is bold, textured and vibrantly coloured, using brush and knife with equal confidence Ed’s oil work is fairly uncompromising in technique, with a delicious, all over approach to the canvases. They are often beautiful objects with deep sculptural use of oils developed over many sessions often scraped off and painted back again, each time building a surface of great visual interest and pleasure. He is more than happy to take commission work. Rates are by necessity negotiated depending on size, medium and to an extent time.

BIG BRUSH little brush is the creative concoction of two artists with different styles but similar philosophies. A meeting through an exhibition about a year ago hosted by The Art Block was the beginning of many hair brained schemes and exciting projects to come. An impulsive decision to work on the same piece has led to unexpected creative harmony and the realization of BIG BRUSH little brush. The work is done on board with acrylic and both artists share this space equally often working on it at the same time. Both having different skills in contrast, tone, colour and technique has led to a balanced finish which is neither more one than the others work. The full

Baked Beats At Troubadour Studios, located at Falmouth Wharves in a building next to The Fish Factory Art Space, you’ll discover a conscious awakening of creativity and community spirit. Taking place at various times throughout the year is “Baked Beats”, a like-noother charity event that invites local artists of all kinds to share and express their passions all for a good cause. Baked Beats is the brainchild of two Falmouth musicians with the same vision of creating live studio recordings with a difference. The idea is to provide musicians who work within the ethos of Baked Beats an opportunity to have a free recording session in front of a live audience in exchange for their performance.
In addition, there is an Open Mic/ Spoken Word segment to the evening in which talented guests are encouraged to present eager eyes and ears with ‘art from the heart’; poems, monologues, singing, a special instrument, a comedy piece… the possibilities are endless. In addition to artists taking the stage, you will find drawings, paintings, photographs, sculptures and other mediums curiously decorating this cosy venue giving you the feeling of stepping into the living room of an old friend. Involving as many talented local artists as possible is what makes Baked Beats truly special, it has provided the opportunity to unite, inspire and give back to the community as a whole. Baked Beats also supports
the FoodBank, a local charity dedicated to providing food and other necessary items to people in crisis. Audience participants in the past have donated an impressive contribution of food and other essentials; a heartwarming sight and a testament to the Baked Beats mission. Baked Beats have had two live studio recording sessions already with the most recent being an unanimous success. The next one is set to take place on 23/05/15. If you are interested in being part of this creative experience and becoming a member of a live audience for talented artists, then keep an eye out for Baked Beats next session and don’t forget to bring a can or two to donate to a good cause!

Once Upon A Time...
There was a storyteller called Corinne, she holds storytelling sessions at Miss Peapods, Penryn. Here are a few of her thoughts for Art Spread: “Storytelling is one of the oldest forms of entertainment and education, it is the birthplace of most modern forms of entertainment and dramatic arts. Stripped back to its roots, storytelling is the ideal catalyst for ideas to form and imaginations to wander untethered towards discovery. In a world where children’s entertainment is becoming more and more intense and media orientated, access to
30
innocent and accessible theatre for children is something I am committed to promoting and offering. I believe live storytelling can be really valuable in creating imaginative landscapes for children to run away on. Listeners can start to question, identify and interact with stories at their own pace without being overloaded with rapid and conflicting images and information that they may struggle to process.
My favourite stories are about wild adventures, bizarre mysteries and courageous mistakes. I start with the bare bones of fairy tales, myths or legends and then flesh them out with my own twists and turns and above all my audience’s ideas. The stories created seem to change with each telling and offer a platform for children to use their imagination wildly with freedom.” Corinne Florence Harragin
