Lincoln University (HBCU, PA) and the late Albert Barnes (multi-billionaire) who amassed an incredible art collection have in common?

On October 20, 1950, Albert Barnes amended his Barnes Foundation’s indenture. “No Trustee,” he wrote, “shall be a member of the faculty or Board of Trustees or Directors of the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, Bryn Mawr, Haverford, or Swarthmore Colleges, or Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.” Instead, Barnes said “the next four Board vacancies . . . shall be filled by election of persons nominated by Lincoln University, Chester County, Pennsylvania.” When Barnes gave Lincoln University the authority to nominate four of the foundation’s five trustees, it was a bold move. Lincoln was a small, historically black university, whose graduates included Thurgood Marshall, Langston Hughes, and Cab Calloway. Jump ahead to 2012 and the Barnes Foundation celebrated the opening of its new building in downtown Philadelphia! But what became of the Barnes’ relationship with Lincoln University and what happened to all the art. If you are looking for something to do, you can start by checking out Jane Monheit: 2014 at Jazz at the Bistro. If you are out north, Ferguson is hosting their Citywalk Concert Series with the classic rock band Einstein on Friday. Javier Mendoza will be there next Saturday, on the 17th. Tomorrow, AKA Saturday, you can join me at the Better Block Project in the Tower Grove Neighborhoods. From 12-4pm, you can check out what “could be”, with pop-up shops food, music and more on the 3200 block of Morganford. You’ll also have time to head down to Union Station for National Train Day 2014. Perhaps a trip over to the Touhill for the St. Louis Ballet performance of Cinderella? Of course we’ll take it easy on Sunday as it is Mother’s Day. Perhaps a nice Mother’s Day Brunch at the St. Louis Zoo, and then a relaxing stroll through the Art Fair at Laumeier Sculpture Park . Next week, you can join me and the family at Busch Stadium where my nephews will be on the field singing and my Cardinals will be battling the Cubs! Of course you must not forget about the Twilight Tuesday live free concert series outside of the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park. Bring a picnic, or support the local food trucks that will be on hand. On Thursday the 15th, Schlafly’s Tap Room is the place to be for Charlie’s Angel’s Auction, to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Great food, great beer, great items to bid on, for a great cause! On Friday evening, head over to the Missouri Botanical Gardens for the Around the World Wine Dinner featuring a four course dinner w/ cuisine and wine from Spain. Also on Friday, you can check out the Third Degree Glass Factory Third Friday Free Party! On Saturday the 17th, Bark in the Park , the largest dog festival in the Midwest is wagging your way in Forest Park. Next, you can head over to the Taste of Maplewood Street

Festival for great food, drinks, music and more! Since you are already in the streets, head over to Cherokee Street & The Grove as these two eclectic neighborhoods have partnered once again to present IndiHop 2014! You’ll have an opportunity to sample over 50 local brews, and enjoy great food, music, street performers and more. Yes, they have shuttles going back and forth all day! Be sure to check out the Cherokee -Lemp Historic Fair on antique row while your in the area. Later that night, if you are still upright, you can head back to Forest Park to catch the opening performance of Henry IV as the Shakespeare Festival in Forest Park kicks off. On Sunday, you can continue to stay in the 16th century by taking a trip to Rotary Park to hang out at the St. Louis Renaissance Faire. It may the only place where you will find live jousting in St. Louis this year. Kick off Memorial Day Weekend on Thursday the 22nd, with Dance St. Louis as they present the 7th Annual Spring into Dance Festival! Enjoy a variety of different styles each evening during this weekend of dance at the Touhill. On Friday, the 23rd, enjoy an evening with Groovethang as they kick off Jungle Boogie at the St. Louis Zoo. The Dirty Muggs will be on the stage there the following week on the 30th. On Saturday the 24th, the St. Louis Bluesweek Festival will be taking place in Chesterfield. This event is all weekend too! If you are looking for BBQ, head downtown to the St. Louis Ribfest, you can also head to Schlafly’s Tap Room for Pork Shop, which will be a day of music, beer, a pig roast, and a 50 residents will have a one day yard sale. On Sunday the 25th, you’ll find me and the girls at the 23rd Annual African Arts Festival in Forest Park. Food, music, crafts, shopping, dance and more! It will be a great time

On Friday the 30th, the St. Louis Art Museum is hosting SLAM Underground, which is a new program at the museum featuring collection tours, live music, cash bar and hands on art-making! Also on Friday, the tree day 50 mile Challenge Walk to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society will be under way in Webster Groves. If you are looking for live music on Friday, the Chicago Afrobeat Project will be bringing the house down at 2720 Cherokee Street Performing Arts Center. On Saturday the 31st, you can start your day downtown relaxing with Yoga under the Arch. Then, head down to the Blues in Benton Park Concert, and you can head over to the Shaw Neighborhood for Thurman Loop Fest. Enjoy crafts, music, storytelling, facepainting and puppet shows! There will also be activities for the kids ;) On Sunday, June 1st Don’t forget about The Pawn, presented by Circus Flora in Grand Center! It looks like another great month to be in St. Louis! Blowing Her Own Horn

Times were changing in 1969 when Susan Slaughter joined the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra as fourth trumpet. In 1972, the principal trumpet left the orchestra at the start of the fall season and Slaughter because the acting principal. In many symphony orchestras, the principal trumpet chair had been traditionally held by men. To evaluate potential candidates for the permanent position, the Symphony appointed a male counterpart. He and Slaughter worked as co-principals while the orchestra faced a traditionbreaking decision. Four months later, in December 1972, the Symphony took the bold step and offered the principal trumpet chair to Slaughter. She accepted and made musical history becoming the first woman principal trumpet in a major symphony orchestra, a position from which she retired after 41 years.

founder of the International Women’s Brass Conference whose mission is to “educate, develop, support and inspire all women brass musicians.” She also began the Trumpet Lab to further the study of orchestral literature for young students. Slaughter has toured with the Monarch Brass, an ensemble that she founded in 1996, which is composed of acclaimed women brass musicians. Upon her retirement, friends and members of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra established a trumpet scholarship in her name at the University of Indiana, her alma mater.

Susan Slaughter sought to overcome biased attitudes during her career. She had personally experienced discrimination in high school where girls were excluded from the stage band. Later, Slaughter received many rejections for orchestral auditions until she began using initials instead of her first name. Slaughter is the

Annual VerbQuake Championship, Truth B Told Wins Indie Award rd

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. -- April 19, 2014 -- Kirkwood High School’s poetry slam team – K-Word – wins third annual VerbQuake Grand Slam and Hazelwood West student Truth B Told captures individual championship. Poems critiquing government inaction on immigration policy to the sexual objectification of women were seared into the consciousness of over 100 audience members in the 90 minute competition. Fifteen youth poets representing five high schools in the St. Louis region competed for top honors of VerbQuake champion at the Missouri History Museum. In the team competition, K-Word earned 115.6 points out of 120 points beating Hazelwood West Slam Cats with 106.5 and Cardinal Ritter College Preparatory with 91.1. The fourth place Cleveland Naval Junior ROTC did not compete. The Kirkwood team -- comprised of Anna, Peter, Maggie, Euphone’ and Elise – infused their poems with social commentary that challenged and engaged, offering two group poems. Spoken word poet Freeman Word coached K-Word in its first year in the competition. Kirkwood teacher Mr. Dominic Pioter sponsored the team.

VerbQuake is a poetry slam competition, critical literacy, and performing arts program for high school teens throughout the St. Louis region. UrbArts administers the program and high schools are free to participate. In 2014, VerbQuake coaches facilitated workshops at 16 high schools and had 14 registered to compete in the spring tournament. The top four teams and 7 individual poets advanced to the grand slam. The VerbQuake planning committee is considering hosting the Spring Tournament in Old North St. Louis in the Crown Square section of the neighborhood. The location of the Grand Slam is to be determined. The next VerbQuake competition will be in July 2014 as a part of the VerbQuake Poetry Slam Camp at Crown Square, funded in part by the Marketplace of Ideas grant made available through the Incarnate Word Foundation. May 23 in East St. Louis, IL: DA-DUM-DUN: Miles Davis, Henry Dumas & Katherine Dunham Honored in Annual Multi-Arts Festival of Jazz, Poetry, Dance, Exhibits & Book Signings East Saint Louis, Illinois Three artistic-cultural geniuses who influenced and were profoundly influenced bythis city will be honored Friday, May 23, at 6:00 pm, on the East St. Louis Higher Education Campus, 601 J.R. Thompson Dr. (ESL, IL 62201). Titled Da-Dum-Dun, the free family festival will take place in the Multipurpose Room of HEC’s Building D. Sponsor is the Eugene B. Redmond Writers Club, which turned 28 this year. Honorees are music avant-gardist Miles Dewey Davis III (1926-1991); literary treasure Henry Lee Dumas (19341968); and dance doyenne Katherine Dunham (1909-2006). They will be feted in jazz by trumpeter Anthony Wiggins (alumnus of Lincoln High School, Miles’ alma mater); poetry/prose by members/associates of the Eugene B. Redmond Writers Club; and dance/drums by Dunham protégés Theodore Jamison and Vivian Watt along with Better Family Life’s Kuumba Youth Performing Ensemble (K.Y.P.E.). Also featured: Sunshine’s Community Performance Ensemble.

Meanwhile, Dunham set up her Performing Arts Training Center (PATC) in 1967 where dancers Darryl Braddix, Valerie (Howard) Adams, Ruby Streate and Anne Walker and drummers Arthur Moore and James Belkwere trained. PATC faculty included master drummers Mor Thiam (Senegalese) and Rene Calvin (Haitian) along with former members of Dunham’s Dance Companies of the 1930’s-1950’s: Archie Savage, Vanoye Aikins, Talley Beatty, Ural Wilson, Lucille Ellis, and Tommy Gomez. PATC senior consultants included Leo Hicks, Wyvetter H. Younge (later, Illinois State Representative), and Eugene B. Redmond, also Dumas’ colleague in EHE (and later poet laureate of this city). (EHE, PATC, BAG [Black Artists’ Group of St. Louis], Black Culture, Inc., the Mary Brown Center, IMPACT House, Eddie Fisher and Allan Merry’s Young Disciples [YODI Enterprise], and Black River Writers Press formed the 1960’s most diverse arts & activist collective.)

Poets will include Michael Castro (founder of River Styx reading series & magazine), Roscoe Ros Crenshaw (cultural writer, photographer, poet), Charlois Lumpkin (playwright, fiction writer, poet), Treasure Shields Redmond (poet, English prof. at Southwestern Illinois College), Darlene Roy (poet, Writers Club president), Jeffrey Skoblow (poet, actor, SIUE English prof.), Jaye P. Willis (motivational speaker, poet), and EBR. A multimodal exhibit titled DavisDumasDunham comes courtesy of the EBR Collection at SIUE. Davis, born in Alton (IL) and raised in East St. Louis, played professionally as a teenager. At New York’s Julliard School of Music he joined pianist Eugene Haynes, Jr., his equally brilliant Lincoln High classmate. Davis led several revolutions in jazz during his long, star lit career. Dumas, whom Toni Morrison called an absolute genius, was born in Sweet Home, Ark., where he lived until the age of 10 before moving to Harlem, NY. East St. Louisans experienced his genius at the Experiment in

Higher Education (EHE)1967-1968where, as a teacher, he impacted the lives of gifted students like poet Sherman Fowler, filmmaker Warrington Hudlin III, and teacher Karen Perkins (Watkins). EHE faculty included Joyce Ladner, Oliver Jackson, Dunham, and Edward Crosby.

Da-Dum-Dun will include a book signing by contributors to Drumvoices Revue and by Redmond, whose new book is Arkansippi Memwars. Co-published by the Writers Club and SIUE, Drumvoices often profiles Davis, Dumas, and Dunham. Also profiled in Memwars, the three are celebrated at local events year-round. Such events go back to 1986, the year the Club was founded, when poet Jayne Cortez (1934-2012), a frequent contributor to Drumvoices, led a workshop with the group. Chartered by Fowler, Roy, and Redmond, the EBR Writers Club meets twice monthly at HEC. Club trusteeswho also serve on the editorial board of Drumvoices are Maya Angelou, Avery Brooks, Haki R. Madhubuti, Walter Mosley, Quincy Troupe, Jerry Ward Jr., and Lena J. Weathers.
