Dear President Obama, Here I go again, a day late and a dollar short! I stumbled upon a contest “to meet the president” and I was busy entering the contest when (1) I lost what I was writing (I have a quirky laptop) and (2) the contest was closed, so I’ll write you any way. I begin by saying how grateful I am for having met you three times in my ninety years. I’ve been to both inaugurations, have received a letter from First Lady Michelle, and I’m a part of Federated Women here in Fort Worth, TX waiting to hear back from First Lady Michelle’s mother, Mrs. Robinson. That’s all been pleasurable, however I want to have a real sit down heart to heart talk with you. Can that be arranged? I know you are busy as a cat on a hot tin roof, that you are working with your hands tied behind your back and I admire the herculean job you’re doing. One of the many things I want to discuss with you is why Juneteenth has not been made a national holiday on the lines of Flag Day. Did you know that 45 out of 50 states have Juneteenth as state holiday? To that end I’m planning to walk to Washington, DC to hear from you for myself the reason why. I’ve done the calculations and it’s about 1400 miles. If I can do ten miles a day it will take 21 plus weeks to get to the White House if the Lord says the same and the creeks don’t rise. Only thing is, the creeks are rising in Texas right now. I am the chair of our Juneteenth Celebration in Fort Worth and have been making sure we celebrate the freedoms we have for over 40 years. I have had Obama offices both times you ran in a building that a grandson lives in now with a big Obama sign (donated by a Republican). I’m a precinct chair and do a fair job of getting my people out to vote. I do my share of feeding the hungry. I take boxes of food from our food bank to people who are house-bound for whatever reason and cannot get to the food bank or stand in long lines. We

are feeding 500 plus families per day. A wonderful group of young people (I call anyone under ninety a young person) are part of a Board that we’ve formed to farm 13 acres on the Trinity River that we’ve been given permission to use. The idea is to help some of those persons who have been incarcerated and can’t find jobs to become self-sufficient. Sixty-six people signed up to participate. Our role model is Paul Quinn College a denominational (AME) school where that president took the football field and the students are paid ten dollars an hour to grow produce that they share with the school cafeteria, their neighbors and the rest is sold. That’s what we propose for our people at a twelve dollar an hour wage. It’s our hope that their families (children) will become a part of the equation and learn that all food doesn’t come off the grocer’s shelf. There are several other things I want to talk with you about. Here’s hoping I can have an audience with you when I get there this winter. I’m looking forward to seeing you again. Sincerely,

Biking the Katy Trail Join the Scott Joplin House State Historic Site for a bike ride along the Historic Katy Trail. We begin with check in at the Scott Joplin House, 2658 Delmar at 8:30 AM then ride by bus, 38 miles to Defiance, Missouri where you will be fitted with a bicycle for our scenic fall ride along the Katy Trail to Augusta, MO.

WEAVED LEGACY How The FIRST Black Millionaire

air salons across America are filled almost daily with Black women “getting their hair done.” From natural to permed to weave, Black women spend a fortune a year on haircare. And, we started years ago. The “Mother of Black Haircare” is Illinois-born Annie Malone whose business model included sales assets offering the products door-todoor and around the world. Malone named her company after the African word “poro” which means“devotional society.” And, the company more than lived up to the definition with 75-thousand Poro agents in at least five different countries. “At her company’s annual meetings, Annie Malone would give furs, diamonds, and property to her agents. Helping women build their confidence was important to her,” says Linda Nance who founded the Annie Malone Historical Society. Malone launched her business in Illinois and relocated it to St. Louis around the time of the 1904 World’s Fair. Nance says, “Annie went to St. Louis in 1902. She told her sister she was going to the World’s Fair because she sensed it was a great business opportunity, but St. Louis hosted the World’s Fair in 1904. She was two years early.”

History bestows most of its “first millionaire” accolades on Madame C.J. Walker for her business acumen in the haircare business. Ironically, Walker learned the trade from Malone in St. Louis and moved West to start her empire. Both women found their niche, but in the early 1900’s Malone’s company had an estimated value of 14-million dollars. Malone centered her enterprise in the heart of the Black elite in St. Louis. “She bought a building in the de Ville area,” Nance says. “This building included a 500-seat auditorium, a rooftop garden, and a manufacturing floor. It had a telephone which she allowed the public to use.” A divorce that dragged on for years tarnished Malone’s profile. The government imposed a luxury tax on haircare products and dragged pg. 10

Malone into court for years over tax issues. When she died, her estate had dwindled to approximately $100,000. Nance became a study of Annie Malone’s when she joined the staff at the Annie Malone Children’s Home in St. Louis, started in 1919 with a 10-thousand gift from Malone. Marveling at Malone’s ability to organize, Nance says, “She didn’t have a computer database. There was no social media. Yet, she built an international company at a time when women were not even allowed to vote and times were extremely difficult for Blacks.” Nance travels to share her research on Annie Malone and is considering writing a book and developing a museum to honor a woman whose drive and contributions have been vastly overlooked.

f you are like me, you will miss summer, but you will certainly enjoy all of the special things that Fall has to offer. Albert Camus said that Autumn is a second Spring when every leaf becomes a flower. Well, I have gathered some of the flowers of joy that St. Louis will be sharing this month. These opportunities, accompanied by what I hope to be amazing fall weather, will ensure September to be a month of memory-making. I certainly hope that you will join me in celebrating the incredible culture and community of Saint Louis throughout these next few weeks. As usual, there’s a little something for everyone and I look forward to seeing you there!

If you are looking for something to do tonight, you can check out the Jeremiah Johnson Band who will be playing down at Hammerstones. Also, tonight marks the kickoff of pro football for 2016 with my world champion Broncos who will be facing the Panthers. I am certainly looking forward to another great season! For something a bit different tonight, the Xtreme Xperience will be bringing their supercars to Gateway Motorsports Park for you to experience. Bring the entire family out for an evening of fun and fast cars! Tomorrow, aka Friday, join me for the opening of the 23rd annual Saint Louis Art Fair, which features 181 visual artists from across the nation who exhibit an unprecedented selection of the highest quality, original works of art along with three stages of entertainment, hands-on activities for the kids, culinary treats from St. Louis’ finest restaurants and more, it goes on through Sunday in beautiful Clayton.

Also on Friday, I hope to make it over to the co-working space, Techartista, for the opening reception of the two year mural project by Edo Rosenblith. For something a bit different on Friday, you can get your share of music and drama beginning on Friday evening as the former stars of the Weismann Follies have gathered one last time to relive their faded glories for an unforgettable musical experience that you can enjoy at The Loretto-Hilton Center for the Performing Arts at Webster University. Also on Friday, at Powell Hall in Grand Center, The St. Louis Symphony will present Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,which will certainly be fun for the whole family. Later on Friday night, I will be playing a crazy game of poker just as O.A.R. will be playing a crazy game of poker at the Pageant. (did you see what I did there?) If I get bounced out of my poker tourney early, you might find me at the Archive Music House & Southern Grill to catch Steve Ewing from The Urge as he will be blessing the mic. On Saturday and Sunday you head over to Forest Park for The 2016 LouFest, that are sure to entertain! This year’s locally-produced festival, now in its seventh year, looks to bring the Lou back to LouFest with a larger LouKidz area, an enhanced Nosh Pit featuring the region’s top chefs, and expanded beer tasting experiences.

Although I would love to be at Loufest, my baby girl’s birthday is on Saturday and we will likely be riding bikes in Forest Park, and heading over to the Party on Pestalozzi street festival before taking in the St. Louis Cardinals baseball game!

Also on Saturday, the 100 Black Men of St. Louis will host the annual Community Health Day featuring the 14th Annual Prostate Cancer Walk at Harris Stowe State University. The Ancient Order of Hibernians will hold the 25th annual “Irish Country Fair”, Sunday, at St. James the Greater Catholic Church, in the Dogtown neighborhood. The event features Irish music and dance, children’s activities, an Irish Market, food, beverages, booths and games. Family Sundays: Art Adventures is upon us in the afternoon at the St. Louis Art Museum where you’ll enjoy hands-on art activities and a lively, 30-minute family tour through the galleries. Also on Sunday, you’ll find me representing the Missouri Association of REALTORS at the opening of the Midwest USJapan Association conference which is being held over the next few days right here in St. Louis!

World Bird Santuary will be at the Whole Foods Market again on Monday in with some friends in Town and Country . There will be some special birds for the kids to see. A story will be read, a snack will be served and a craft will be done afterwards! The soulful styling of Courtney Loveless will be on stage at the first installment of the fall season of Twilight Tuesdays at the History Museum in Forest Park. Feel free to bring a picnic or partake in the food trucks that will be available for you. There is also a kid zone with crafts and face painting! On Wednesday night, St. Charles may be the place to be as the Foundry Art Centre will be hosting Canvases & Cocktails, an event where you can go home with a masterpiece of your own creation! These guided art-making events are perfect for artistic professionals and amateurs alike as instructors guide participants step by step. Bring your favorite bottle of wine or beer to drink, relax, and have fun! Described as cross between The Moth Radio Hour and Mystery Science Theater 3000, “Sorry, Please Continue... “ features some amazing stories told by anyone who wants to participate mixed with commentary from some of St. Louis’ funniest comedians on Wednesday night. On Friday check out the music festival where Music @ The Intersection will feature a “happy hour” concert in Strauss Park highlighting jazz, blues and new music. The music continues into the night inside some of Grand Center’s restaurants and venues! You’ll find me at the Chesterfield Amphitheater for annual The Taste of St. Louis, on Friday for an award-winning celebration of the best food, art, music and culture our great city has to offer. Also on Friday you can bring the kiddos to the Kirkwood Greentree Festival, a family-oriented celebration featuring everything from live music and a dog show, to food and a car show. There will also be a parade on Saturday morning. The Great Forest Park Balloon Race festivities kick off on Friday night with the Balloon Glow in Forest Park. On Saturday, guests can enjoy the race and an array of planned festivities. On Saturday, The South Grand Business District is excited to announce the 2nd annual Fall Festival. The event is to celebrate what makes South Grand and its surrounding community unique, which will incorporate local artists and musicians, dancers, and, most of all, great restaurants, services and shops. Every year, Schlafly Beer brews a ton of different beer styles. At HOP in the City you can try over 40 of them. Purchase a “Tasting Ticket” to enjoy unlimited beer samples at the biggest Schlafly party of the year at The Schlafly Tap Room or purchase a “Lot Ticket” to just come check out the bands on Saturday night. Me and my babies can’t wait to head over to Grand Center as they host, along with Regional Arts Commission (RAC) , a free afternoon of dance performances by 30 of the premier dance troupes in St. Louis. This inaugural event, Grand Dance Fest, will be on Saturday, in the Grand Center Arts District located at Washington and Grand. Also on Saturday, BBs Jazz Blues & Soups will be host to their Annual Rhythm, Blues & Funk Festival. Bryan Adams will be at the Hollywood theater Saturday evening. I heard that one of his most popular songs was based on The Lou! “Baby you’re all that I want, when you’re lying here in my arms, I’m finding it hard to believe we’re in St. Louis!” I think they made him change it to Heaven for a broader appeal ;) Come enjoy the 2nd Annual Atomic Blues Festival Atomic Cowboy on Sunday which will be Benefiting The St. Louis Blues Society’s Education Fund.

Don’t miss it! Also on Saturday, the Repertory Theatre’s 50th anniversary with be upon us with special guest Bernadette Peters. Strange Folk Festival, St. Louis’s most popular indie craft show for over 10 years, is making a home in Lafayette Square on Saturday and Sunday. The festival features 200 curated artists/crafters/makers from all over the country, 10 live bands, whimsical installations and DIY activities that attract over 30,000 participants. Also on Saturday, the 6th Annual installment of “100 Thousand Poets & Musicians for Change - St. Louis”! An official offshoot of the world-wide events created by Michael Rothenberg and Terri Carrion, “100,000 Poets & Musicians for Change - St. Louis” is a blending of the largest poetry and music events in history, with hundreds of countries around the world participating in umbrella events.

Art in the Park has quickly become a favorite venue for artists, and art-loving (and buying) crowds have discovered this hidden jewel of an art fair in the middle of the city. On Saturday, the fair offers everything from jewelry, pottery, glass and textiles to mixed media, wood, sculpture, painting and photography. Most artists are local, with a few from Illinois and other parts of Missouri. Join me on the terrace at Pere Marquette Lodge for a German Beer Garden. This event will feature live accordion music, Erdinger Beer and, of course, bratwurst! No reservations are needed but seating is limited so feel free to bring your lawn chairs and picnic blankets just in case. TRUMP – LONG ON WORDS -- SHORT ON POLICIES Oh no you didn’t Donald Trump. What a red-hot spaghetti mess. Many are audibly groaning, tired of mindless, empty and hateful political rhetoric, not only in this country but also around the world. Now Trumpfatigue has set in, numb to his boorish, clownish and clumsy comments. What’s more, voters don’t know whether to be alarmed or disgusted or both. As the Republican presidential candidate, he’s offended so many groups that the chances of his winning the White House are as slim as his model wife. According to polling, Trump is doing terrible with women voters who are overwhelmingly supporting Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Women represent a little more than half of the electorate and voting in larger and larger numbers. In 2020, they’ll celebrate 100 years of suffrage and this momentous occasion has not been lost to them. With the growing realization that the country could well have its first woman president during the centennial, the upcoming election promises to be even more earth shattering. with them. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapist. And some, I assume are good people…

His mantra -- “Build a wall” -- chanted at virtually every rally that he will construct a wall at the border and make the Mexican government pay for it may have won him more conservative votes, but it went over like a lead balloon with Latinos and others. To add insult to injury -- he blatantly put on full blast U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel (Indiana born) presiding over his defunct Trump University fraud lawsuit. He accused the Latino judge of being “a hater,” citing bias because he was appointed by President Obama and for his Mexican heritage. Less than three months from the national election, a Fox News poll found that 66 percent of registered Latinos intend to vote against Donald Trump. While he has recently attempted to soften his immigration stance, Mexican Americans, in particular, said it was “too little, too late.” The reputed billionaire real estate mogul has branded his political campaign as anti-politically correct. It’s a war of words, so to speak, with little policy substance. Taking off the gloves, his politicalese is rejecting code words and dog whistles, saying exactly what he thinks. It’s straight up in your face and bare knuckles. But could this pugilistic and aggressive tone be more an act of desperation – a crisis in male Whiteness, if you will? The probability of Hillary Clinton winning is becoming increasingly evident, which means it’ll be 12 years of a White male in absentia from the powerful political throne. This could be the beginning of a game changer for a truly culturally diverse society. It could well be years before we realize the full impact of President Obama’s historic and “consequential” pg. 28

presidency. Likewise could be the case for Mrs. Clinton. Hence, a lot is at stake for the ruling male elite. “Wouldn’t that be embarrassing to lose to crooked Hillary Clinton,” Trump recently said rather contritely. But instead of pivoting more to the center, Trump appears to be doubling down, throwing more red meat to his ravenous base. Baffling is his shaky campaign leadership. First, he replaced his embattled campaign manager Corey Lewandowski with Paul Manafort then he recently resigned for nefarious dealings with pro-Kremlin Russian and Ukrainian operatives. Now he’s replaced Manafort with boogeyman Stephen Bannon, head of Breitbart News, as campaign CEO. Breitbart is an ultra right-wing syndicated news and opinion website. Unless Trump plans to hit rock bottom and keep digging, his leadership choices make no sense. Perhaps a ray of light to find his way back to solid ground could be his “kinder and gentler” Kellyanne Conway, recently named campaign manager. Reportedly, the selection of Bannon is tantamount to a hostile takeover of the Republican Party, as Bannon’s Alt Right is known for romping, stumping and spewing racism, xenophobia, misogyny, Islamaphobia and anti-Semitism. Hence, mindboggling campaign strategies remain. Bearing in mind that another presidential defeat could very well be the end of the Republican Party, as we’ve known it. Since the fuzzyheaded provocateur landed on the scene as a political force to be reckoned with, he has evaded making African Americans much of a political football. Some polls show it as low as 0 percent -- you heard it, nada, zilch, nothing. Trump says he has “a great relationship with the Blacks,” but many could see through that like cellophane as evincing fakery and contempt. Even more telling, he spoke to predominantly White crowds delivering messages to “the Blacks” that he is the one to solve their problems and that the Democratic Party has taken them for granted. “What do you have to lose? You’re living in poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58 percent of your youth is unemployed.”

Delivering the ultimate blow, he lashed out: "I say this to the AfricanAmerican community. Give Donald Trump a chance! We will turn it around. We will make your streets safe so when you walk down the street, you don't get shot, which is happening now. That's what's happening now."

Like writing on ice on a very hot day, the pitch quickly melted. Unless as some analysts put it, it was not intended for this demographic at all but to more moderate White Americans, particularly women, to show he isn’t a dangerous demagogue. If there was anything that came out of Trump’s vitriol, it was a beginning national conversation that Blacks are not monolithic and all are not “poor, begging and violent.” There are all types of Blacks as there are all types of Whites or any other ethnic group. Besides, there is a precipitous decline in gun violence since the 1990s except for such places such as Chicago and Baltimore. To only focus on the down-and out is blatant stereotyping and racist. pg. 32

The fact there are too many Blacks living in impoverished and violentprone neighborhoods does not take away from the majority who are lawabiding, hardworking and God-fearing. Kaiser Family Foundation, 15 percent of the U.S. population lives in poverty: 26% of Blacks live below the poverty line; followed by Latinos at 24%; Whites 10 percent and others 15%. More people living in poverty are white, young and female.

As of August 2016, the U.S. population is about 325 million. Whites make up 63 percent; Hispanics are18 percent, Blacks 13 percent and Asian and Native Americans make up the rest. Most times, news reports do

not show actual numbers of people when it comes to issues like poverty and the same could be said for crime. If numbers were revealed, it would show far more Whites living in poverty than Hispanics or Blacks. Living below the poverty line are about 21 million Whites; about 14 million Hispanics and about 11 million Blacks. Hence, it’s also important to look at sheer numbers. Still, Latino Americans and African Americans are overrepresented (percentage wise) among the nation’s poor in comparison to Whites. Moreover, low-income Latinos and Blacks tend to be concentrated in urban areas while Whites are more spread out. This is what comedian Chris Rock said in response to Trump’s “What do we have to lose?” -- “Everything,” he snapped. probably wants Blacks to really forget that he more recently called into question the legitimacy of Obama as president as well as his citizenship, becoming the darling of birtherism. Another is when he unnecessarily weighed in on the Central Park Five, a 1989 case where five New York City teenage boys of color were wrongly accused and imprisoned for gang raping a Central Park jogger. So outraged, he took out a high-priced fullpage ad in the New York Times. There also have been other charges involving housing and workplace discrimination at Trump family-owned properties. The revelation that his father, Fred Trump, real estate developer and philanthropist, was arrested in the 1920s at a Ku Klux Klan rally epitomized his ingrained racial animus. The Rev. Jesse Jackson, civil and human rights activist, gave more specific responses to Trump’s question, which he later embellished to: “What the hell do you have to lose?” Below is Jackson’s a partial list: o Voter suppression

earn Black votes again, not simply inherit them,” he said in his weekly online commentary, Democrats Don’t Get Blank Check from Black Voters. Still, it’s utter fantasy to think that Trump can win over substantial numbers of Black votes.

Critics say Trump needs to see a professional therapist, a nice way of saying he might be crazy, since there have been allegations of narcissism and sociopathy, psychological disorder. Dance St. Louis kicks off its 2016-2017 season with the incomparable Bill T. Jones / Arnie Zane Company. Led by artistic director and two-time Tony Award-winning choreographer Bill T. Jones, the New York City-based, award-winning company performs its profoundly moving modern dance work, “Analogy/Dora: Tramontane,” which is based on an oral history Bill T. Jones conducted with Dora Amelan, a French Jewish Holocaust survivor. Since its 2015 world premiere, the work has thrilled and awakened audiences with its honesty, compassion and humanity. Dance St. Louis presents Bill T. Jones / Arnie Zane Company on September 30 and October 1 at the Touhill Performing Arts Center. In addition to Dance St. Louis’ presentation of the company, Bill T. Jones will receive Washington University’s 2016 International Humanities Medal – the largest U.S. award for the humanities that honors the lifetime work of a noted scholar, writer or artist who has made a significant and sustained contribution to the world of letters or the arts – on September 29 at Washington University’s Graham Chapel. The medal adds to a long list of honors for Jones, including the Kennedy Center Honors, two Tony Awards, MacArthur “Genius” Award and Obie Award. “Analogy/Dora: Tramontane” is based on the oral history Bill T. Jones conducted with 95-year old Dora Amelan, a French Jewish nurse, social worker and World Ward II survivor. Amelan’s harrowing, touching and inspirational story is broken into approximately 25 episodes that become the basis for choreography and songs. Mimicking the interview format between Jones and Amelan, the story unfolds in multiple levels of transformation with the threads of Dora’s narrative paralleling the choreography. These episodes chronicle her early life in Belgium, her mother’s death as the Germans were marching into Belgium, and her experiences working at an underground Jewish

organization in Vichy France’s internment camps, Gurs and Rivesaltes. The work is a portrait of the ability to persevere and survive, and the nine dancers of the Bill T. Jones / Arnie Zane Company move seamlessly between dancing, speaking and singing in the work. Dora Amelan is also Bill T. Jones’ mother-in-law. In 2014, Jones married Amelan’s Israeli-born son, Bjorn Amelan, creative director of Bill T. Jones / Arnie Zane Company. Jones and Amelan found love for a second time after both of their previous long-term partners passed away from AIDS. In his remarks on making a dance based on his mother-in-law’s memories, Jones said in a 2015 interview with The Forward, “That’s what I hope will come out in the piece we have. Dora showed me a vision of how to live in the face of an unfair world, but do it with openness, optimism, and resilience.” Bjorn Amelan designed the set for “Analogy/Dora: Tramontane,” with video design by Janet Wong. Composer Nick Hallett created an original score informed by the text as well as a soundscape that combines German Romantic Lieder, songs from both world wars, the 50s and 60s classic pop music, and the club music from the 80s and 90s. Lighting design is by longtime collaborator Robert Wierzel, and costumes are by Liz Prince.

In the aftermath of the release of the video tape showing former St. Louis police officer Jason Stockley in a compromising position after the 2011 shooting death of the late Anthony Lamar Smith. The Missionary Baptist State Convention of Missouri, in partnership with the Baptist Ministers Union of St. Louis and Vicinity, Minister Donald Muhammad of Mosque #28 (Nation of Islam), the NAACP and other community partners are demanding answers from law enforcement and government authorities regarding what many have deemed as “premeditated assault that resulted in the untimely death of Anthony Lamar Smith.” Representatives from faith and community organizations have determined and pledged to work together in an effort to stop the systemic killing of Black lives by those who have taken an oath to protect and serve, and who have positioned themselves above the law. Various speakers are expected to raise questions about the delayed disclosure of evidence when criminal and civil cases involve police officers; the delay in charging officers involved in the shooting of Black victims; disclosing procedural errors in this specific case, and perceived cover ups throughout this case; among other concerns and issues. “The Church must continue to be the voice for those crying in the wilderness. “Continuing the Black Struggle for Self Determination: the Task at Hand”

huru Comrades Sisters and Brothers, as President of the International People’s Democratic Uhuru Movement (InPDUM), I am calling on you to attend the historic 25th Anniversary Convention of InPDUM. This call is being made with the most serious sense of urgency as the imperialist put forth yet two presidential candidates to save us. This time its Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. We are told these two sides of the same imperialist coin are our only options or we face imminent peril. This message to you is not the cynical imperialist message of accepting the lesser of two evils. My message is that we as the African nation can reject the worn notions put forth the Democrats and Republicans and fight for ourselves and our own power. This 25th Convention is one way our voices and actions are used to forward the interest of the entire African nation. Sisters and brothers at this critical stage in history we are forcing the question of self-determination back onto the African political agenda. Our Africans Charge Genocide Petition Campaign where we have gathered more than 7500 signatures calling on the United Nations to charge the U.S. with genocide in its treatment of African people, is one example of how we are leading the fight for self determination. The campaign to get justice for three drowned Black girls murdered when deputies forced their car into a pond is another example of our efforts to deepen the emerging demand for self-determination for the oppressed African nation. In addition, the trajectory of InPDUM is a revolutionary trajectory. We were founded in 1991 by the African People’s Socialist Party as part of a revolutionary strategy to defeat the counterinsurgent war Against African people carried out by white power and to forward the demand for self –determination while bringing the African masses back into political life. These are only a few reasons why you must be at this 25th Anniversary Convention. Be a part of our ongoing march to build the revolutionary mass organization. Luisa Otero Prada Artist Luisa Otero Prada is an artist based in St Louis, Missouri. Born in Colombia, South America. At the age of 11 years old, Luisa participated as a child artist on a series of 3 Children’s Murals commissioned in the city of Medellin, Colombia. Luisa attended La Salle University, in Bogota, Colombia, where she majored in Architecture, She worked as an Architect in Colombia several years. She moved to the United States in 2001, in 2011 she decided to follow her passion and to paint more and more. She is an acrylic painter, inspired by nature and life experiences, her paints are an explosion of colors and shapes. BIOGRAPHY Dannie Boyd (Dannie B) Email: dannie.boyd224@gmail.com Website: DannieB.com Social Media: Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest - @DannieB224 Biography Dannie Boyd is an American-born photographer that thrives on exploring the world around him via photography. Currently based in his hometown of St. Louis, MO, he enjoys frequenting local venues and supporting the arts, in all forms and genres. Much of Dannie’s collection consists of the documentation of cities and social justice actions. From time to time, he also creates portraiture to explore a different realm of photography.

Dannie continuously works to develop his own signature “look” within his work by experimenting with new techniques. He does not aspire to be the best photographer; he aspires only to be himself. As he has progressed in his craft, Dannie has learned that the pursuit to find one’s style is essential to maintain the passion for what you do. When not working on photography, Dannie spends his time indulging his musical talents by playing and teaching guitar. He believes that it’s important to explore all creative outlets, helping bring new perspective to everything that one does. In the future, Dannie aspires to be a full-time artist and build a career on the creation of original works and the teaching of the creative skills that he has acquired.

Dannie is well known by his moniker “Dannie B,” first bestowed to him in high school during the early days of his creative and entrepreneurial ventures. One of his first projects was a video documentation of daily rap battles that took place at his high school; Riverview Gardens Sr. High in St. Louis, MO. Dannie filmed and edited his first production at the age of 17 on a pocket-sized digital camera that was gifted to his mother the previous Christmas. Photography and travel came into Dannie’s life in the summer of 2010 during a trip to the Seattle/Tacoma area of Washington State. Having become fascinated with the blend of mountainous hills and serene coastal culture Dannie took hundreds of pictures, snapping one on nearly every street he ventured. Upon uploading photos from his trip to Facebook, he received praise from family and friends for his excellent job of capture the feel of the Pacific town. On this occasion, once again, Dannie used a camera that was gifted to someone else, his father’s this time. After making the decision to purchase his own camera the following year, Dannie participated in a study abroad program for graphic design in Amsterdam, NL. Despite being there for graphic design, he spent most of his time getting acquainted with his new camera all across the city of Amsterdam. This is where his desire to become a photographer, and world traveler, was born.

“Acting White”

Share your Story Dear friends: I have been asked to write a chapter in a book that will address colorism in education. My chapter will focus on “acting white.” Specifically, when I was growing up, I was a “smart” student. My top performance in school, doing homework, raising my hand to answer questions, etc. often drew the accusation from my African American classmates and friends that I was “acting white.” Now, I know there are psychologists out there who say this is not true and does not exist. But alas, it was absolutely true for me. I have written about this in past works. I will do so again for this new book. I do know that many young folks today who continue to have such allegations hurled at them so feel free to share this email with whoever and have folks email me directly. I did a survey on this very question about 7 years ago and the results were consistent with my experiences decades ago. I’d like to update my earlier survey. I would love to hear from anyone out there who has a similar/related story either involving yourself or someone you know. I would like to include your story in the chapter. Artists for a Cause will hold grand unveiling event of new office The non-profit organization to open at .Zack Performing Arts Incubator in St. Louis

St. Louis, MO. – Artists for a Cause (A4AC), a national nonprofit organization that supports artists who serve community needs, invites the arts community to a Grand Unveiling Party, Thursday, October 20 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at their new office located at .Zach Performing Arts Incubator, 3224 Locust Street, St. Louis.

aesthetic spins: of poetry and protest The distinction Louise M. Rosenblatt made in The Reader, The Text, The Poem: The Transactional Theory of the Literary Work (Carbondale: Southern Illinois University Press, 1978) between aesthetic reading and efferent reading focuses on directedness. For the efferent reader, the main concern is acquiring information. Less concerned with utility as such, the aesthetic reader centers “directly on what he is living through during his relationship with that particular text”(25). Rosenblatt constructs no brick, iron or bamboo wall between the modes of reading, because the aesthetic involves a degree of the efferent. Given the difference between a cooking recipe and a poem, the efferent need not incorporate the aesthetic. The experience of reading Medina, Tony, ed. Resisting Arrest: Poems to Stretch the Sky. Durham, NC: Jacar Press, 2016. $19.95 and Cushway, Philip and Michael Warr, eds. Of Poetry and Protest: From Emmett Till to Trayvon Martin. New York: W. W. Norton, 2016. $21.95 invites vacillating between aesthetic and efferent modes. One might note how aesthetic spins affect the EKG of the efferent. This note focuses only on the anthology titles and adds a listing of the poets whose works appeared in both of the books. In the first instance, the title Resisting Arrest: Poems to Stretch the Sky provides a clever surprise. The main title triggers ideas about antagonism between police officers and citizens, the prison industry, and police killings as the current malady of choice in the United States. We think of information, as in Tony Medina’s saying the poets in the book “remind us of a universal hurt, grief, anger, rage, shame and love that we all can recall when confronting the blunt reality and the savagery of abuses associated with corrupted power, indifference and intolerance” (x). The subtitle might remind us, on the other hand, of the magic of poetry, of its ability to make our minds the sky and stretch them. Of Poetry and Protest: From Emmett Till to Trayvon Martin involves more unity of title and subtitle, suggesting poetry that protests is limited to violence and outrage. When we actually read the poems in the anthology, we quickly discover a broader meaning of protest. If we need help, Amiri Baraka’s brief essay “Protest Poetry” (22-23) can guide us. His first sentence reads: “I have always resented the term ‘protest poetry’ because it seemed to me that it was dropping the poetry I felt closest to in a lead box so it wouldn’t contaminate the dull ass mainstream” (22). His final paragraph reads: “So the main thrust of the term ‘protest poetry’ is to stigmatize the literature that questions the given, the status quo. But wouldn’t that include The Egyptian Book of the Dead, the old and new testaments of the Bible. Isn’t Revelation Protest Poetry?” (23). In the case of Baraka, I sense the aesthetic is the efferent. It may interest a handful of readers to know the following poets have poems in both volumes: Kwame Dawes/ Rita Dove/ Cornelius Eady/ Kelly Norman Ellis/ Patricia Spears Jones/ Douglas Kearney/ Yusef Komunyakaa/ Quraysh Alis Lansana/ Haki R. Madhubuti/ devorah major/ Marilyn Nelson/ Ishmael Reed/ Sonia Sanchez/ Quincy Troupe/ Frank X. Walker, and Afaa Michael Weaver. Overnight Campout Event in Forest Park helps families discover the outdoors

MDC joins host of partners to offer an affordable way to discover camping and outdoor skills in St. Louis’ most famous park.

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Have you ever wanted to learn to camp or fish? Or perhaps go canoeing or create a great meal outdoors? But maybe you just don’t know where to start. If so, then WOW St. Louis is for you. This beginning overnight camping event will be held in Forest Park Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 8 and 9. The purpose of WOW St. Louis is to empower anyone new to camping and outdoor recreation with the skills, comfort and confidence they need to take the next steps on their own. The emphasis is on family participation; however, individuals are welcome, too. The campout is part of the WOW National Outdoor Recreation and Conservation School. It’s packed with opportunities to learn skills that will enhance your outdoor experience. WOW St. Louis is sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), along with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Bass Pro Shops, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Forest Service, Wonders of Wildlife Museum, National Park Service, City of St. Louis, Gateway Regional YMCA, Missouri State University, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The weekend program is presented in two parts. Saturday is the outdoor skills portion where WOW offers classes in a variety of outdoor activities, including archery, canoeing, fishing, geocaching, orienteering, kayaking, outdoor cooking and more. Each one is designed to teach participants how to enjoy a wide range of outdoor recreational activities while practicing personal safety and outdoor responsibility. Classes are open to anyone age six and up. The second portion is the overnight campout. WOW participants will have the opportunity to spend the night in Forest Park Saturday night. The camping experience will include tent set-up and a campfire program. Tents will be available on request on a first-come, first-served basis for those who don’t have one. Campers should bring their own sleeping and personal gear, and dress for the weather. The cost to attend the outdoors skills classes Saturday is only $15 per person, making it an affordable day of family fun. The Saturday night campout is an additional $5 per person. Registration includes equipment for all activities, lunch on Saturday, and a hotdog cookout Saturday night with breakfast snacks Sunday morning for campers. Financial assistance to cover the cost of the event is also available. Registrations will be accepted through Sept. 23. ob Law, former host of the national syndicated radio show “Night Talk”, and civil rights activist, is heading the campaign to “Turn off Killer Radio”.

In an open letter to the community, Law observes that up to the 2016 Labor Day weekend there had been 517 people shot in Chicago, 222 people shot in New York City, 190 people shot in Philadelphia, 106 shot in Washington D.C. and 182 in Los Angeles. Law said most victims were Black males. The latter states ‘when measured against entire populations of other developed countries, Black American males have the second highest homicide rate in the world. Confucius once said “If one should desire to know if a kingdom is well governed, if its morals are good or bad, the quality of its music will furnish the answer”. Currently the radio air waves are filled with DJ comments and song lyrics that urge Black youth to become Scammers, Rapist, Killers, Harlots and Thieves. It is time to… ‘Turn Off Killer Radio’. The movement has already begun and on October 15, 2016 people of integrity everywhere will turn off killer radio stations. No more killer music. No more degrading Black women. Turn Off Killer Radio.’ I have been writing about this for years. It is time to draw national attention to the misogynistic lyrics common in hip-hop music and culture, I question why many earlier efforts went practically unnoticed. For years the late C. Delores Tucker waged a passionate national campaign against obscenities in rap music. The political and social activist focused a spotlight on rap music in 1993, calling it “pornographic filth” and saying it was demeaning and offensive to black women, but she was mainly left out in the wilderness.

During the civil rights years, African Americans used buying power as political leverage in the struggle for equality. Women can stop the hip hop misogamy in one month, and make rappers clean up their messages. Women constitute the largest of today’s buying power markets, crossing ethnic and sexual preference groups, and influences over 80 percent of dollars spent. Can you imagine the impact females can have on the recording industry if mothers did not allow their sons and daughters to buy what is considered music that is denigrating to women? Rap music has been at the center of the controversy, and while some argue First Amendment rights, artistic license and music reflecting the reality of life, others argue crass commercialism by “artists” and the music industry, and a total disregard for social responsibility. Although rock and pop acts generate some of the filthiest compositions and most explicit images, and their concerts also incite riots and create a large amount of madness and disorder, it is generally the hip-hop and rap events that typically draw attention in the media. I hope Bob Laws’ open letter will receive as much attention. Supporters of the “Turn Off Killer Radio” movement include the Clear The Airwaves Project; The National Black Leadership Alliance; Rage Against The Ratchet Hood Research; Detroit Urban Information Network and CEMOTAP or Committee to Eliminate Media Offensive to African People.

Tucker passed out leaflets with lyrics from gangsta rap CD’s and urged people to read them aloud, and picketed stores that sold the music, handed out petitions and demanded congressional hearings. And why did it take so long for women to recognize the obvious hatred of their sex expressed in rap videos? Why haven’t more women become furious at being continually depicted as sluts willing to do anything for a chance to be with a young man with money and a flashy car and jewels? I believe, C. Dolores Tucker, who passed away October 12, 2005, had the right idea when she picketed the record stores, but I think she did

Portfolio Fundraiser Moves to Artist's Studio Janet Riehl's "Women & Wardrobe: The Riehl Collection" exhibit has finished it's successful run at The Portfolio Gallery and Education Center. It brought in $2,000 to help with much-needed building repairs. Many people went home with framed ($150) and unframed ($50) prints they love, and a good time was had by all. Folks have said they would have loved to have seen the show, and were sorry they missed it. Janet has decided to host At Home evenings on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. so you can! ART OF FOOD

MashME Let me first apologize for my absence from writing these last few months. I unexpectedly had to have knee surgery and my main focus has been my recovery. I’m glad to be back and able to continue to share new and revamped recipes with you all. I hope this summer treated you all well…now let’s get to it! I tried this recipe out several times a few months ago. I won’t lie, I was extremely skeptical on how it was going to turn out. I mean Cauliflower Mashed “Potatoes” sounds kind of weird and definitely something you’d have to get used to. It is all of the above but it is also a much healthier alternative from the very starchy potato. The texture of mashed cauliflower can be quite mushy, but we can adjust that! The best way to fix that is to completely drain the liquid from the cooked cauliflower, because the drier the mixture the better. You can also add a potato or two (peeled and chopped) to the cauliflower florets and boil it all together.

You can be somewhat versatile when serving this side dish. For vegans, I recommend serving it with portabella mushrooms. Baked or grilled salmon for vegetarians/pescatarians and grilled or baked chicken for my meat eaters is a great pairing with the mash. I personally love to serve this dish with a zigzag drizzle of Balsamic Vinegar Reduction. You can either make it from scratch or buy a bottle, but it adds a slightly tangy flavor that compliments the entire meal. Make it work for you, adjust the flavors, add something to it to meet the desires of your taste buds.

Cauliflower Mashed “Potatoes”

Easy Marinated Portabella Mushrooms

Serves 4 1 ea

head of Cauliflower

3 Tbsp

Milk (or Almond or Soy)

1 Tbsp

Butter (or Vegan Butter: Earth B

2 Tbsp

(Light) Sour Cream

¼ tsp

Garlic Salt

Freshly Ground Black Pepper

3-5 ea

Garlic Cloves, whole

1. Separate the head of cauliflower into small florets and chop the ends off. Chop the cauliflower into small florets or chop finely. 2. Bring approximately1½ cups of water to a simmer in a pot, then add in your cauliflower and garlic cloves. Cover and turn the heat to medium. Cook the cauliflower for 12–15 minutes or until it is very tender.

Portabella Mushrooms

as needed

Italian Salad Dressing of choice

1. Clean the mushrooms with a damp cloth & remove the stems. Place them in a Ziploc bag. Pour the dressing into the Ziploc bag and gently distribute it in and around the portabellas. Lay the bag flat for approximately 20 to 30 minutes before cooking. 2. Place mushrooms on a baking sheet that’s already sprayed with non-stick spray. Bake at 400 degrees for approximately 10 minutes, then flip & roast for 10 more minutes. Alternatively, you can grill them for those beautiful grill marks. Slice the mushrooms into strips. Serve with asparagus, green beans or broccoli florets.

3. Drain and discard all of the water from the pot. Then add the milk, butter, sour cream, salt & pepper and mash with a potato masher until it looks like mashed potatoes. For a smoother texture place the cooked cauliflower, garlic cloves and remaining ingredients in a food processor and puree. *For my vegans/vegetarians: Substitute all the dairy products in this recipe with your favorite alternatives. Whether it’s almond or soy milk, Earth Balance, or even Tofutti Sour Cream, make it work for you.

½ Tbsp Granulated Sugar 1. In a heavy-bottomed sauce pan, bring the vinegar to a low boil and add the sugar. In order to prevent burning, which is a taste you don’t want, whisk consistently for about 15 minutes. The reduction should be nappé and reduce to thick syrup that reduced to about ½ cup. *Nappé refers to the ability of a liquid to coat the back of a spoon
