Parentlink are delighted to present Art te Aroha 2019, a celebration of the creativity of our children and New Zealand’s artistic community. We would like to acknowledge the huge amount of work that has gone into this event - students, teachers, parents, artists and sponsors. Without the dedication of each individual this event would not happen. We thank you all. NgÄ mihi nui ki a koutou, Parentlink, Kilbirnie School
Principal’s Welcome Kia ora koutou,
Nau mai, haere mai ki tēnei kura. Welcome to Kilbirnie School and thanks so much for being part of this keenly anticipated evening. Art te Aroha holds a special place in the calendar of our school, previous events in 2013, 2015 and 2017 live fondly in the memories of adults and students alike. Art te Aroha offers us a great deal. It celebrates and endorses the visual arts, it provides a wonderful social occasion for our school community and it acts as a productive fundraiser. I would like to acknowledge the immense energy, time and commitment of the Parentlink group in planning and preparing for this event. Moreover, I would like to thank them for creating a rich context and purpose motivating our students to contribute in a learning area that is very important to us at Kilbirnie School, the visual arts. The work building to the exhibition has given all students latitude to appreciate work produced by their peers and professional artists. Thanks also to our fantastic staff and all those within our school community who have supported the event so passionately. This year Art te Aroha has included the production of the book Ora. This book is a unique Kilbirnie School treasure or taonga and contains a contribution from every student in the school. We thank Kylie Mürrle for the inspiration and drive that produced Ora. Our motto, Whaia te iti kahurangi, is associated with the idea of encouraging and supporting learners to strive to reach their personal potential - to be the best they can be. At Kilbirnie School we believe participation in the arts, including the visual arts, is an essential part of being the best you can be. Thanks for being part of an evening that celebrates this commitment. Ngā mihi nui, Tony Austin Principal.
Children’s Art
Our students have each produced an artwork for exhibition at Art te Aroha 2019 for showcase amongst professional artists’ works. In addition to these individual pieces, each class has produced a collaborative work to be sold by silent auction. This is a chance to own a truly unique piece of art celebrating your child’s time in their class. The silent auction is open until 3pm, Monday 9 September.
Ora
We are proud to launch Ora, a professionally published book containing a creative work from every student at Kilbirnie School in 2019. Ora is written and illustrated by our students with the support and encouragement of their teachers alongside editor-in-chief Kylie Mßrrle. This book is a true celebration of our children’s creativity. Ora is available for $30

Humphrey Hanley
I am a photographer, videographer, motivational speaker, and advocate for people with disabilities all over the world, and I was born with the rare genetic skin condition Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa – the worst condition you’ve never heard of. With skin as fragile as a butterfly’s wing, it can feel like I have battled through more challenges just getting bandaged and ready to face the day than most people face all year, or even lifetime. I am certainly not one to dwell on those challenges however, so I do everything I can to make sure there’s one moment in every day worth being awake for – and thus the desire to exhibit was born. An eclectic collection of photography I’ve captured while getting out into the world to share my journey, while challenging the able and disabled alike to do the same. Kyla Cresswell
Kyla Cresswell is a Wellington based artist who grew up in Invercargill and studied printmaking at the Otago School of Art. Years spent overseas working and travelling saw her influenced by the aesthetic of Japan and inspired by the minimal wintery landscape of Europe and Canada. Kyla’s work over the past two decades has often responded to an environmental concern, the denuding of land by forestry and agriculture, the diminishing natural environment in the wake of urban sprawl, changing habitats as our seasons show signs of change. Kyla’s stark white embossings echo the ghost of a former stand of trees, or reflect a landscape after a heavy storm. The choice of scratchy, spiky drypoint, both hand drawn and created by dremel, evoke the spiked foliage of the black spruce of the boreal forest. Kyla’s delicate yet powerful work explores the physical impact of elements on the environment as well as the consequences of human occupation of the land. She strives to find a sense of stillness and a quiet celebration of nature. Find more of Kyla’s work online at www.kylacresswell.com Into the Trees - 6/15 (below) Drypoint and mezzotint

Kylie MĂźrrle
Kylie MĂźrrle comes to us from a background in commercial arts and animation. She had a great art teacher in high school who inspired in her a lifelong passion for the arts. Her work has mainly appeared in television, however in recent years, her drawing and sculpture have been shown in Australian and New Zealand galleries. Kylie believes in the power of traditional artisanship, exploration of our inner world, and arts driven community practices as mechanisms to elevate and celebrate life on a daily basis, steering us toward a sense of connectedness to nature and natural laws. A new passion is emerging within her to promote the arts in the everyday lives of the next generation, in blind hope for a better future for the planet and its creatures. Kylie MĂźrrle has been a part of the organisation of the revelry that is Art te Aroha and she is thrilled to share this evening and its inter-generational celebration of the arts with you. Spring

Noa Noa von Bassewitz
Noa Noa von Bassewitz is a Wellington based print maker of German and Māori extraction. Her fascination with the medium of print began 24 years ago when she attended a printmaking course run by Jenny Dolozel at Elam Art School. Wood block prints are her chosen medium for expression. Her artworks are often raw and filled with both personal and Pacific symbolism and a rich cast of ever evolving characters. Her work has been featured in Takahe and in Asian Art Review in 2013. An anthropologist and teacher by training, Noa Noa has also worked producing educational resources as a sexuality educator as well as a freelance illustrator. After an elongated hiatus Noa Noa is back working full time as an artist as well as raising her four fabulous boys and managing a loud, hungry and highly creative household with her Austrian husband and two crazy cats. Prints featured in this exhibition come from her most recent series entitled “Rona and her Night-Time Creatures”. The series explores the relationship between the subconscious represented by the moon and its dark, sexual, female expression as represented by Rona the woman in the moon as well as a host of additional creatures who reside within both the face of the moon and the heart of the artist. Sam Broad
Sam whittles, sketches, frames, hangs, tutors, talks, hacks, glues, mentors, sculpts, bitches, prints, collects, sells, rants, sobs, sits, stares, murals, illustrates and works in art 6 days a week. He loves patrons, barely tolerates commercial art directors, is wary of public gallery curators, can wrestle fellow drunk artists when he has had a few, but often ignores their shows due to jealousy and envy. This collection is a mixture of some rock and roll posters. Sam’s theory is “the deal in the music industry is, you do the art for free, then get a bunch of posters to flog, it’s like extra work, which must be morally good because of the protestant work ethic we all have, despite myself being an avid atheist.” He belongs to the Cardboard Misanthropic Humanist Party and can’t wait to grow up to see what all the fuss is about. Sam’s works are all limited artist signed editions of gig posters from 2016. Find more about Sam online at https://www.sambroad.co.nz/ * Red Rocks Colorado Flight of
