After five years of waiting and spectacular hype, the Zeits Mocaa Collection and Building opened this week and we were there. What has been deemed by most of the media to be the most important museum opening this century, the building now completed is truly breathtaking. Designed by Thomas Heatherwick - the British Architectural firm who have unlocked this wonder onto the world stage. The building comes with a hotel, restaurant, lifts and dramatic cut aways that aligns it with the best commercial museums in the world. The building which is a modern day St. Peters could house anything and make it look astonishingly amazing. From slick BMW’s to skate boarding events it is guaranteed that by association, anything would look spectacular. Although there has been much hype about the Zeits Mocaa Collection over the years, it appears that the collection and its means of generating investment from art world investors needs to be clarified. The shopfronting of art from the African continent and Diaspora seems almost a bit too slick. Despite this very minor commercial detail, the Zeitz Mocca Museum is of a great international standard, a truly inspiring space to visit and enjoy with an open mind. Gabriel Clark Brown

Don’t Miss a Gear, Giclee Print, Impasto and Acrylic on Canvas I sometimes stamp my name on my paintings more than once. While doing this one day way back in 2007, I stamped the entire canvas with the r-i-c-h-a-r-d stamp. I remember selling the piece to a Swiss wine maker who visited my studio. I was not keen to sell it, but did. This inspired me to create this series. But, this time, I decided to create a message in each work that relates to me and my daily thoughts and ideals. The message in this work is: “Don't Miss a Gear”. I learnt this from my good friend and business partner Andy Reid, of Vespa, South Africa. Do things slowly, methodically and don't miss a gear and you will reach your destination.

ERIK LAUBSCHER “THE LANDSCAPES”

“His experience is located in the expanses of the South African landscape where it is possible, as it were, to breathe freely – [both] in his sensory perception of it and on the canvas.” When Laubscher returned to South Africa in 1950 from France he became known for his “bold use of glowing and resonant colour…and the capacity to absorb the influence of contemporary masters without being mesmerized by their personal idiosyncrasies…”. His still life compositions, in which he acknowledged the influence of Bernard Buffet, were exhibited alongside the works of the more established New Group in Cape Town. It was during a holiday to Bushman’s River Mouth in 1953 that Laubscher began drawing the local Euphorbia forests. Deciding that pencil was not suited to the subject, he used a charcoal of his own manufacture. It was these drawings that created the framework for the body of works (fig 1) which signalled the breakaway from the eloquent but Eurocentric post-Paris still lifes. It was also here that Laubscher made his first strides towards abstraction by filling in spaces between the foliage with flat planes of pure colour (fig 2). The landscapes of the 1950s through to the 1970s, varied in their application of abstraction, clearly showed Laubscher’s assimilation of the Surrealist strategy adopted by Fernand Leger. The visual language applied by Laubscher of weighing contrasting planes against one another, in order to achieve a state of orderly intensity, were applied in representational forms as well as abstract compositions. One of the works which Laubscher sent to the Sao Paulo Biennale in 1959 (fig 3) was described as a “landmark” piece. In this work, simply titled Composition, strong black forms are laid over other more colourful shapes. Rather than overpowering, they provide additional viewpoints and miniature landscapes within

the composition. This heralded the starting point of his “Hard Edge” landscapes which were to dominate his output for the following two decades. For a period of fifteen years Laubscher juggled his role as artist with that of paint salesman. He worked for the Plascon paint company between 1955 and 1970

and while he admitted this infringed on his creative output he also acknowledged that it provided him and his family with the financial security his art was not able to do at that time. It was also this employment which saw him frequent the roads to small towns and familiarize himself with the landscape of the Klein Karoo, Cedarberg, Swartland and surrounds. These trips, coupled with family camping holidays, afforded Laubscher new visual stimulation.

The patchwork of farmers’ crops, dirt roads, power line punctuations, the surreal intensity of the colours and the undulation of the landscape (fig 4) interspersed with man-made interjections became meditative spaces which Laubscher then translated to canvas. This exhibition of his works at Ebony Curated came together in order to fulfill one of Laubscher’s wishes - a review of his landscapes spanning his career as an artist.

As with good food and premium wines, so too fine art needs to be experienced to be appreciated. In 2016 the Franschhoek Wine Valley launched Art Franschhoek, whereby visitors to the valley are able appreciate the fine art collection exhibits on show during the months of October and November. This year Art Franschhoek will once again ‘open its doors’ to the public from 26 October to 27 November. Visitors to the valley will be treated to an abundance of art as Franschhoek’s many galleries and resident artists showcasing their finest works. To celebrate the start of this festival of art appreciation some of the participating galleries will be hosting special events during the weekend of 27 to 29 October, which includes a series of curated artist walk-abouts.

MANZART: DONNA MCKELLAR SOLO SHOW, FRANSCHOEK We are honoured to present Donna mckellar’s solo show for the 2017/18 art franschhoek season in our gallery in the very centre of the franschhoek village The new solo show by Donna is on view at the manzart in the high street from the 24th November 2017 onwards. The new shift of thought has become strikingly evident in her stylistic technique: peaceful, painless and serene landscapes with perfect lighting have now evolved into fragmented, unsettling landscapes that evoke emotional unrest. Donna’s realistic signature style is still evident in her work, yet another dimension of meaning has been added, almost as if it has been superimposed onto sections of the work, which resulted in a deep, and sometimes dark, but also playful expression of emotion.

Everard Read Franschhoek is pleased to present State of the Art, a group exhibition. Originally founded in Johannesburg 1913, Everard Read is South Africa’s oldest commercial gallery. Representing well established and emerging artists from Southern Africa. An important contributor to the already vibrant cultural life of South Africa, Everard Read maintains a strong and unique identity for itself. In December 2016 Everard Read decided to branch out to the winelands and open the Franschhoek gallery, situated at 20 Huguenot road, in partnership with the acclaimed Leeu Collection properties. State of the Art will include some of South Africa’s finest sculptors, painters and printmakers. This group exhibition will form part of the Franschhoek Art Festival, 27 – 29 October 2017. “

IS GALLERY - FOREIGN BODY BY HEIKE ALLERTON DAVIES SUNDAY 29 OCTOBER Foreign Body looks at the female body as the exotic and the gaze that accompanies it - both the male and female gaze. Heike plays with ideas around the fear and fantasy of the exotic or the ‘other’ Her interest lies particularly in the women of the Dwarsriver Valley of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek and the complex historical narrative that is carried in the lives, faces and bodies of these women. “The blue and green eyes interspersed through the communities reflect hints of myself and of my own children and something brutal reflects back at me through the same blue eyes, subtle visual reminders of the layered complexities of being a women. It is about being able to return the gaze not only as a women but also as a forbidden other.” 24

With the advent of SA’s rapidly growing Printmaking market of collectors and print lovers (there has growth of 5 print studios 5 years ago to more than 20 Print studios today) Fine art prints are on the way up both in popularity and financially. Strengthening this market is a rich appreciation of a 100 years of fine art history that has woven our diverse cultures into a powerful language of printmaking. SA Printmaking that started as a recording and cataloguing means via copper plate illustrations of early explorers to academic renderings of early C20 prints and stylistic Pierneef prints to Kentridge’s exquisite prints and woodblocks of the mid nineteen eighties. In turn Prints have followed the strong tradition of SA photography; prints are no longer the side plate of an artist’s exhibition dinner, but now constitutes the whole roast beef of art. To this regard one can see that artists in the past five years such a Pierneef prints previously sold for R 5000 to average 45 – 90K, Maufangejo’s and Hodgins although more recent – record the same. In 2010 a Hodgins would set you back at R 4K recently one doesn’t blink at 50K price tag. Of course the great master of SA printmaking Kentridge holds the current SA print record of R 910K for his Red Sleeper series print. Ironically as University Art Department try to close down print departments, a young spring of talented hip art print workshops are opening up - Is the awareness on SA Printmaking growing? I believe it is, and it’s getting its own Hip Art Print Fair. The Art Times caught up with Sharon Sampson for a short Q&A, and what we can expect to see this year at the fair.

Sharon its been years in the making but now this is your second bigger and better FAP Print Fair hosted at GIBS this year, how has this concept taken off by SA art buyers and how do you intend growing your Fair for a South African Audience? Yes, it all started seven years ago with exhibitions at my studio at home. When the event got too big, GIBS kindly offered to host it for us. We incorporated other print studios/ galleries and changed the name to the South African Fine Art Print Fair (FAP). As you point out, this year it will be even bigger giving SA art buyers and collectors a unique opportunity to view and invest in a far wider range of fine art prints. Work from contemporary and master printmakers as well as talented young artists will be on display. Exquisite etchings, linocuts, lithographs, screenprints, woodcuts from most periods of SA printmaking will be showcased. Works by South African icons include Vuminkosi Zulu, Cecil Skotnes, Gregoire Boonzaaier and Judith Mason; as well as contemporary masters such as William Kentridge, Bevan de Wet, Diane Victor and David Koloane will be showcased. (See list of exhibitors below). With Fine Art Prints quickly catching up to hip mediums like photography and digital, do you think there is enough awareness and knowledge by the average buyer to know what they are buying- especially on the technical side of knowing what BATS, HC’s and Asp’s are. How and what kind of aspect are you pushing to educate the Fair going of educating and changing perspectives about fine art printmaking? There are a couple of points here - it’s interesting to look at the trajectory of art collecting in South Africa, in particular print collecting. In earlier days (1970s onwards), many collectors were well-informed about

the artists and their making processes, collecting out of real interest, as well as a desire to support the artist. These collectors understood the concept of a print being an impression from a matrix created by the artist’s hand. Although knowledgeable collectors are still around, there is also a large group of new buyers who purchase prints for other reasons, such as perceiving the work to be an alternative financial investment, or influenced by other trends. Often these early collectors are bewildered by the editioning principles of printmaking; and misunderstand the way prints are produced. Confusion has also built up as the term ‘print’ is often used to describe both original impressions and photomechanical reproductions. Once people understand the technical aspects of image origination, they are usually blown away by the medium. As artists, particularly within the field of printmaking, we have a responsibility to inform potential buyers about the many aspects of our discipline so that they feel confident that, when buying a print, they 28
really are buying an original artwork; and that they have a true understanding of the editioning process. We are offering the FAP exhibitors the opportunity to talk about the works on their stands to try to break down some of the mystery. As the works on show will encompass a wide range of techniques we’re confident most of them will be covered. We will be discussing aspects of printing such as state proofing, using examples from the outoftheCUBE stand. The FAP website, will display a simple online catalogue that explains the principles of editioning, and links to this catalogue will be available at the Fair. To what extent or mixture of influences do you give to this rapid growth in the market from the past five years, surely its more to do with the growing quality of work or the local growth of appreciation of the medium? There are many factors at play here, but I do feel that the quality of printmaking in South Africa has always been sophisticated as

most of the country’s master printers have had international training and are structured in their practice. In addition, South African printmaking has a strong socio-political history. Since the establishment of the local contemporary publishing studios – such as The Caversham Press in 1985 and The Artists’ Press in 1991 – the professional technical standard here has been high. Although, as you mentioned, the tertiary institutions are closing or side-lining their printmaking departments, in a way this has forced a maturing of South African printmaking as the emerging new studios have been established by young experienced printers, more entrepreneurial in spirit, who for example have trained at Artist Proof Studio; or who have paid their dues by working formally at the professional studios and so gaining a fuller understanding of the business of printmaking. There has also been an emergence of private teaching studios, like Collin Cole’s Blue Door, and many of his students have bought their own presses, in turn teaching privately or mentoring young artists. There is no doubt that the huge international acclaim for some South African artists who include print as a significant part of their oeuvre has increased its status as a medium, not only for collectors but also for artists. An awareness seems to have developed among artists of the creative potential that printmaking holds, thereby producing a demand from artists to make prints with technical assistance. After all, wasn’t it Robert Hodgins who used to paint before lunch and print after? I also think a big influence on the print market has been the sudden increase in the

number of South African auction houses, and the fact that works by living, practicing artists are being auctioned is constantly. The auction houses’ online sales provide a particularly appropriate way to view works on paper, and prints have become a large part of the auction output. For the collectors, the auction results are transparent and always available online, which helps them to make buying decisions based on comparisons. This is not without problems, such as month to month variations of achieved auction prices for prints from the same edition. Having travelled a bit, how does South African Printmaking fare against other International markets, say in terms of popularity, price and return of investments for both artists and buyers alike.

SA FINE ART PRINT FAIR ‘17 I can’t comment on the international art investment market, but do reinforce the high quality of professional South African printmaking. FAP’s curator, Mandy Conidaris, was invited to curate an exhibition of 100 South African prints for the 20th Grenchen Print Triennale in Switzerland. Once the exhibition had been installed, the organisers and Triennale visitors commented constantly on the sophisticated technical quality of the prints, including the works’ conceptual strength and resolved imagery. We were most fortunate to visit The London Original Print Fair last year. LOPF – London’s longest running art fair is now in its 33rd year. The only SA printmaker represented was William Kentridge. We know of prints by another contemporary South African artist that have appreciated over 500% in 5 years, so providing a handsome return on investment. Where would you like to take this FAP Art Fair, would you make it an annual event, or would you like to get the Fair to travel or better still bring international exhibitors here to expose their works. There is certainly enough printing going on in South Africa to justify an annual print fair. We want to explore the prospect of a travelling Fair; and good for local artists to be exposed to work by artists from other countries. Our dream is to grow FAP to the point were it can showcase the best of South African print globally, starting with the main centers. Bring international printmakers and gallerists to South Africa – LOPF last year had over 20 of the 51 exhibitors from overseas. Increasingly South African printmakers are being recognized and represented internationally. At FAP we want to accelerate that process. To do that we all have to work together and will ultimately make printmaking “the whole roast beef of art”.

Maral Bolouri, a previous 2015 L’Atelier Top 100 finalist, won the overall award for her installation Mothers and Others, a multi-sensory, interactive installation that investigates representations of women in African oral traditions. It explores the power of proverbs by juxtaposing negative and positive depictions of women in cultural truisms.

Kenya’s Maral Bolouri and SA’s Banele Khoza take top awards African art was literally brought to life when several seemingly normal artworks lining the entrance of the Absa Gallery came alive with subtle human movement as guests entered the venue at this year’s prestigious Absa L’Atelier art awards. The ceremony that followed reflected the idea of giving art a platform to thrive, as the 2017 L’Atelier winners were announced. Maral Bolouri of Kenya took top honours and was awarded the main prize, and Banele Khoza of South Africa walked away with the Gerard Sekoto Award. The Absa L’Atelier awards entered their 32nd year in 2017, marking another fruitful year of collaboration between sponsors Absa and South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA).

Banele Khoza has also been a Top 100 finalist in two previous L’Atelier competitions, in 2015 and 2016, and this year was awarded the Gerard Sekoto Award. The Gerard Sekoto Award is awarded to a South African artist who has demonstrated continual improvement in the quality of their entry yearon-year in the L’Atelier. He won the award for his piece Note Making, which comprises a series of digital drawings printed with an inkjet printer. Through the pieces, Khoza questions representations of what it is to be a male in South Africa and within the broader social context. Priscilla Kennedy of Ghana picked up the first Merit Award for her piece Untitled 2016, which takes a jab at the social stereotype that women are tools of seduction. South African Wilhelmina Nell was awarded the second Merit Award for her piece No Evidence of a Struggle. This bronze, wax paper and wood work of a lunchbox with uneaten sandwich crusts represents the artist’s interpretation of sloth; the mark of a person unwilling to be proactive in their own personal success. Compatriot Manyatsa Monyamane scooped the third Merit Award for her photographic work Koko Meikie, which attempts to capture the timeless beauty and style of the South African youth of the 70s, and illustrate how these people define themselves today, 50 years later.

L’Atelier aims to help further winners’ careers by providing them with unparalleled industry opportunities. For the main and Gerard Sekoto award winners this includes a six-month and three-month art residency respectively at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris. The Gerard Sekoto Award is made possible through a partnership between Absa, SANAVA, the Alliance Francaise of Southern Africa, the Institut Français Afrique du Sud and the French Embassy in South Africa.

Award, a two-month art residency at the Sylt Foundation, on the island of Sylt in Germany, and the third Merit Award, a one-month art residency with the Ampersand Foundation in New York, USA. All Top 10 finalists are also placed on a twoday art professionalism course to assist them in managing their careers. Professional and self-taught young, emerging artists from these same 10 countries will once again be invited to maximise these valuable opportunities in the 2018 edition of the Absa L’Atelier competition, which will continue tonight’s creative idea under the overarching theme ‘Give art life’. Sasol New Signatures winners circle
Johannesburg-based artist, Lebohang Kganye, 27, has been announced as the winner of the 2017 Sasol New Signatures Art Competition. Kganye won the coveted award for her animated film ‘Ke sale teng’, which means ‘I’m still here’ in Sesotho. The film confronts how family photo albums no longer have a fixed narrative but instead open us to reinterpret our past and even interrogates our need to preserve a certain narrative. “Sometimes we rely on the family photo album as a way to understand what family is meant to be,” said Kganye. “What we often land up with is a grouping of images that have been constructed, and perhaps do not account at all for the histories and memories that are connected to that album.”
Through the use of silhouette cutouts of family members and other props in a diorama, Ke sale teng’ confronts the conflicting stories, which are told in multiple ways, even by the same person - memory combined with fantasy. As the winner of Sasol New Signatures, Kganye walks away with a cash prize of R100 000 and the opportunity to have a solo exhibition in 2018 at the Pretoria Art Museum. Acclaimed artist, judge and Sasol New Signatures Chairperson, Dr Pieter Binsbergen, said most of the finalists’ works harnessed materials of multisensory nature, “holding the viewer captive for longer periods of time, thus driving home the pressing social, political, and environmental issues South Africa grapples with.”

This year’s Sasol New Signatures theme was “be discovered”. The theme sought to challenge artists to come to the fore, and showcase their talent to in the country’s artloving public. “The works of the 2017 Sasol New Signatures winners and finalists has lived up to the history and intention of the competition, and showcases what South African artists are capable of,” said Charlotte Mokoena, Sasol Executive President for Corporate Affairs and Human Resources. “Noteworthy this year has also been the diversity of the submissions received. This demonstrates that Sasol New Signatures is making progress in reaching emerging artists from all walks of life.” Coming in second place was Sthenjwa Luthuli from KwaZulu-Natal. He wins for his woodcut work titled Umbango, which means ‘conflict’ in isiZulu. The work reflects the cultural politics within traditional Zulu rituals and customs in a contemporary family setting. The more I research my family history, it becomes apparent that family history remains a space of contradictions – it is a mixture of truth and fiction. Biography: Lebohang Kganye is an artist living and working in Johannesburg. Kganye received her introduction to photography at the Market Photo Workshop in 2009 and completed the Advanced Photography Programme in 2011. She also completed her Fine Arts studies at the University of Johannesburg in 2016 and forms a new generation of contemporary South African photographers. Although primarily a photographer, Kganye’s photography often incorporates her interest in sculpture and performance. Over the past six years, she has participated in photography master classes and group exhibitions locally and internationally. Kganye was the recipient of the Tierney Fellowship Award in 2012, leading to her exhibition Ke Lefa Laka. She created an animation from the series, which was launched on Mandela Day 2014 in Scotland, entitled Pied Piper’s Voyage. Kganye was then selected as the Featured Artist for the 17th Business and Arts South Africa Awards in 2014.

What motivated you to enter the Sasol New Signatures art competition? As an artist I respect Nelmarie du Preez, who won the Sasol New Signatures two years ago. It is evident how her practice has grown and how the competition enabled that.
Where does your passion for art comes from? I actually started out writing poetry and doing storytelling, and then I was introduced to theatre when I was in high school. It was never my intention to pursue visual arts as I was interested in a career in literature - specifically African literature or journalism. Then I saw a photograph taken during the Sudan war when there was a famine, by photojournalist Kevin Carter from the Bang Bang Club. It depicts a girl crouched on the ground, with a vulture waiting for the child to die of starvation. This was my introduction to photography and when I finished high school, I went to study photography at the Market Photo Workshop. I had a strong desire to incorporate my interest in literature and performance into my photography practice.
What excites you about the creative process? I create fictional narratives, which enact stories about my family. Here I take on different personas and stage scenes composed of photo-montages on life-size cardboards or silhouettes. My interest in memory and history is also about being at the same place at different times and not meeting. Therefore, I construct a visual narrative, in which we meet. The history of South Africa is a prominent theme in my work, my work is evidence of the political in the personal - thus personal narratives resonate with larger political and social issues and the project makes evident these intersections via an interrogation of intimate narratives.
Briefly describe your artistic journey up until the point of entering Sasol New Signatures? This exhibition was also shown in a group exhibition in New York, which inspired me to study Fine Art at the University of Johannesburg (I completed my degree in 2016). Tell us about your preferred medium/s ...and why? My preferred mediums are photography and video art. Photographs present not just with the “there-ness” of the object but its “having-been-there”, thus having the ability to present a past, a present and future in a single image. Roland Barthes argues that these are the modern way in which we experience the reality of loss and ultimately death. My approach of working in both photography and film is through personal archives, which raises more questions than they are able to answer and the histories that have been written out and excluded, through the archival reconfiguration. If you could summarise your work in three independent words, what would it be? Distinctive, Fictional and Poignant Did this competition teach you anything about yourself? The work I created for the competition, allowed me to realise that family albums are a significant part of family histories. Photographs are more than documentation of personal narratives - they become prized

possessions, harking back to a certain event, a certain person, and a particular time. Family photographs are more than just a memory of moments or people who have passed on, or re- assurance of an existence, but that they are also vehicles of fantasy that allow for a momentary space to ‘perform’ ideals of ‘family-ness’, and become visual constructions of who we think we are and hope to be, yet at the same time being an erasure of reality. I realised how the family album is composed of a selection of what shall be remembered, what forgotten, therefore our histories become orchestrated fictions, imagined histories. Which local artists do you admire? Santu Mofokeng, Mary Sibande, William Kentridge,, Nandipha Mnthambo, Lawrence Lemaoana, Sharlene Khan and Andrew Tshabangu. What are you currently working on/What is next for you as an artist? I have just worked on a new photographic

series Reconstruction of a family (2016) which focuses on how the image is never ‘complete’, we are only presented with visual clues that allow our own imaginaries to further ‘complete’ the story. The work reveals that memories do not reveal easy answers. For me it reveals that time can break apart and reconnect and not fit back into one another. This work also inspired a new stop frame animation film, Ke sale teng (2017), which I submitted for this year’s Sasol New Signatures, forming part of the exhibition at the Pretoria Arts Museum. I am looking forward to completing my new work, which moves further from photography and continues to incorporate animation, performance and sculptural elements. What impact would winning this competition have on you? It would give me the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition in a museum and have the support to work on a new body of work over the next year. This would take my practice and career to a new level.

Strauss & Co, South Africa’s leading auction house, is thrilled to be offering two important early drawings from William Kentridge’s celebrated cycle of stop-animation films known as Drawings for Projection. A globally recognised artist whose work forms part of Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa’s launch exhibitions, Kentridge’s short films are the outcome of idiosyncratic drawing method. Using charcoal, the artist draws, erases and redraws scenes, incrementally developing his narrative. Premièred at the Weekly Mail Film Festival in October 1989, Johannesburg, 2nd Greatest City after Paris (1989) is the first film in Kentridge’s Drawings for Projection cycle. It has been widely exhibited and was favourably received by Arthur Danto and Blake Gopnik, two important contemporary American art critics, in 2001. The narrative of the film revolves around a property developer named Soho Eckstein, his estranged wife, and a dreamy interloper named Felix Teitlebaum, who in Kentridge’s words gives Mrs Eckstein “a gift of love”. The eight-minute film was composed of 25 charcoal and pastel drawings. Drawing for Johannesburg Second Greatest City After Paris (estimate R2 – R3 million) portrays Teitlebaum, who is often interpreted as Kentridge’s artistic alter ego, bathing in his own anxiety. Kentridge’s fourth film, Sobriety, Obesity, & Growing Old (1991), further explores the troubled love story introduced in his debut film. Eckstein is faced by both financial and personal ruin. Premièred at the 1991 Cape Town Triennial, the artist was awarded the coveted gold medal for his film.

BUSINESS ART Archive (Big Tree), a 2012 linocut printed on 15 pages from Encyclopaedia Britannica at David Krut Workshop in Johannesburg (estimate R300 000 – R500 000). In the past year, Strauss & Co has successfully handled a number of important Kentridge drawings. In June, two early pastel and charcoal drawings, Study towards Responsible Hedonism (1988) and Dancing Couple, fetched R3 978 800 and R4 092 480 respectively. At the same sale, two little known drawings from Kentridge’s 1994 music video for pop ensemble Mango Groove elicited a great deal of interest. Released in 1993, Mango Groove’s ballad Another Country was described by Billboard magazine as “one of the most beautiful songs to emerge from the transition to democracy”. The two untitled drawings from the music video fetched R2 159 920 each.

Drawing for Sobriety, Obesity, and Growing Old (estimate R2.8 – R3.4 million), one of 25 drawings progressively altered by the artist for his film, dramatizes a pivotal moment. It depicts Mrs Eckstein embracing her young paramour, choosing an open landscape of possibility. Strauss & Co is also delighted to be offering Middle-Aged Love (R600 000 – R800 000), an offset lithograph on Korean Kozo paper from 2002. The print was made during an artist residency at the School of the Arts at Columbia University, New York.

canvas has to date, informed her distinctive evolutionary journey. Also central to her growth, the grace and alchemy experienced in her work which, immediately connects one to her artistry. A self-reflective artist, Gum offers considered perspectives to the meta-narratives of an ever-changing world. It is no wonder then that Tony Gum and Christopher Moller found parity, given the gallery sees itself as a place where, ‘the Loveless will find love, a place where beauty and truth always matter’. Aptly entitled, ‘Ode to SHE’, Tony’s latest work, intuitively completed at the beginning of South Africa’s 2017 commemorations of women’s month, (celebrated on the 9th of August locally each year) explores, and encapsulates the essence of what it means to be a Xhosa woman, a human expression of ‘womanhood’. Notwithstanding this, Tony Gum believes in honouring our individual truths. The ability to pause, reflect, connect and celebrate that which makes each of us ‘whole’ means, we are better placed to recognise and honour this very essence in others. The principle that sustains and connects each of us;

Tony Gum - artistry, grace, beauty, depth of expression and self-reflective truth means she naturally transcends the confines of a singular narrative or form of expression. Her ethereal yet candid nature is captured in every piece, culminating in the symbolic practice wherein the artist offers her entire being as canvas: body, mind and soul, fused together as modalities of expression. Tony is art and, art is Tony. Represented by the Christopher Moller Gallery in South Africa, Gum has since inception, been guided by the freedom, language and rhythm of life that is art. Tony Gum’s often minimalist yet considered approach to story telling, translated onto

‘That process of being a woman or human is so wonderful, how about we pay homage to that? How about we understand and acknowledge this…we tend to look past each other, we don’t see each other for who we are; sometimes we miss our own personal experiences, the truths of being an individual. So this work, ‘Ode to She’, is a letter to self’. Tony Gum’s exhibitions are by nature, a dual and deeply engaging experience. In the first instance, it is an intimate still life, human encounter with the artist. Her arresting spirit captured as photographic canvas means, the viewer’s gaze lingers as though in conversation with the artist herself. A second aspect of the experience with Tony’s work is the story and narrative explored.

Each aspect relies on and is, seamlessly woven into another. Her physical form and photography extended as methods of instruction, relaying the stories and personal perspectives of her world. Perhaps Tony Gum’s artistry offers a third dimension to ponder. The opportunity to witness life held constant, a reminder that in essence, each of us are works of art; we manifest in the physical, as canvas and vessel, holding together our unique life’s story. Like the different stories in this exhibition series, our individual story comprises the spiritual expression of who we ‘really’ are; our ‘calling’, our ‘song’, our life’s ‘poem’ and ‘ode’.
Tony’s new work, ‘Ode to she’ is an invitation to experience the narrative of transition and transformation; the journey in Xhosa tradition known as, ‘Intonjane’ when, a young girl, ‘Intombi’, bare chested, adorned in traditional beads and ‘Imbaola’, a traditional natural body clay, becomes a woman, ‘UMFAZI’ and later, ‘Umama Omkhulu’ or ‘Ixhego’ – old lady. Different rooms in the gallery, symbolic of the distinct stages and processes of transitioning among Xhosa women, will also reflect the tapestry of rural life, thatched kraals, dry veld and cloud-filled skies symbolic of the complexity of early life years. In the foreground, each stage captures the extent to which women in particular, navigate multiple narratives. “Ode to SHE” opens 29 sept, 6:30 at The Christopher Moller gallery until 3 Nov.

A CELEBRATION of the fullness of life is expressed in the paintings and drawings of Hussein Salim. They pulsate with energy made possible by the adept co-mingling of colour and line. Ordinarily an artist tends to be a great colourist or with the ability to render line. Yet here one is faced with a wonderful use of both such elements: little drawings appear, disappear and reappear as colour bathes them in light or gives them a rich, energised life. At the same time, Salim, who comes from Sudan also exhibits a sense of the sensual reality of paint and surface as various textures invite a closer look. Perhaps what is most pleasing, however is the great variety of subject and methods – large canvases as well as smaller paper works, not to mention the fact that each work in the beautiful upstairs addition to the Eclectica gallery, creates enough interest to exist in themselves, irrespective of the greater whole which is the exhibition. His line use is often lyrical and draws from ancient wisdom of the Middle East, Africa

and possibly India. This one can glean given his use of ideographic or pictographic imagery where a sort of writing system stimulates the desire to decode. Often such writing systems are free flowing and calligraphic, at other times they are more symbolic like images from Tarot cards. This interest in language – that uniquely human capacity with the power to concretise the vibrational quality of the word into a fixed and yet mobile writing system – offers the viewer the chance to play diviner. The colours stir emotively and there is an obvious sensual component to his work. In other words, the interplay of colour and line in their rhythmic pattern suggests order in the form of song or dance or storytelling. It is a transmission of information in a kind of ritualised, mystical dimension. In such respects, one is reminded of Totem images of the Navaho; aboriginal carvings and abstractions; the early Western Modernist abstract tendency as well as hieroglyphics.

But it is not sufficient to just render symbols. One should work through the medium. In this respect, the artist’s patience with acrylic and other mixed media interventions draws the eye in and suggests at times, a kind of electrical surge of energy. This is further demonstrated by the sheer complexity of some of his canvases in contrast to the more expressive works on paper - what may be termed “colour studies”. One may be able to trace some of the colours and seeming endlessness of the surfaces as the ridges and furrows of the dessert, where as the artist puts it, one notices “the little things”. For it is the state of right intention and right thought that opens the mind and senses to the reality of what is. If only one can still the “chattering monkey” and concerns of the mundane. It seems the artist accomplishes this in many respects: Suddenly, one sees the slight nuances between colours or the shift in intensity of line or the well sequenced and ordered gridding structures of some compositions. In a sense, one might argue that to the extent Salim demonstrates
this facility through art, so he offers the viewer a metaphor for a kind of openness that has the capacity to find anew and to make anew. For that space, if you will, is not simply dictated by serial logic alone, but a kind of right brained focused intensity. At the same time, his interest in language, writing and symbols amalgamates that inchoate inability to define with the capacity to name, categorise and communicate with others. All in all, the viewer is sure to be treated to an exhibition that is vibrant and in my assessment, quite joyous. To the extent that the artist appeals to the eye and mind, so the viewer becomes a kind of co-creator to the artist. This exhibition can be viewed in the newly opened upstairs space of the Eclectica Contemporary Gallery. “Mentor - 2 Visions “ is an exhibition showcasing the works of two very disparate artists that happenstance has brought together in the town of Hermanus, local artist Jenny Jackson (82) originally from England and the young Zimbabwean artist Obert Jongwe (34). Our purpose is to show the interaction between two people from completely different backgrounds and the influence they have had on each other professionally, illustrated through art. Their positive artistic growth is a testament to the fact that with enough effort and good will we can all become mentors to each other, even in a world

Jozua Rossouw gave Jenny her first solo exhibition in 2011 and a second one a year later at the Rossouw Modern, both so well received that she was inspired to continue her artistic journey with total dedication. Today, in her own gallery in High Street, Hermanus, Jenny is at her easel every day. “I am lucky to have a studio at my gallery so I can paint AND meet people. For me, the huge benefit of selling my own work is the interaction with everyone who likes it as well as my clients!” Jenny’s main subjects are portraits, real and imaginary, and still lifes, in oil and making use of only a palate knife. Jenny’s work now hangs in homes around the world; she was exhibited at the 2015 International Art Fair in London where one of her Still Life’s was illustrated in the publicity catalogue alongside the works of artists such as David Hockney.
Obert Jongwe Born in a rural village in Northern Zimbabwe in 1980, Obert became interested in a drawing during his school years and, with limited information available, he started visiting galleries and learning as much about art as he could. Inspired by the work of Zimbabwean artist, Tendai Nhavira, Obert started painting with the conviction that he was fulfilling his destiny. Inspired by the native scenes around him, he used vibrant colours and bold forms that reflected the moods of his subjects with a brutal honesty. From the very beginning, his work was highly regarded by galleries in both Zimbabwe and South Africa. Since 2015, inspired by the people and surrounds in Hermanus, Obert’s subjects transformed to urban scenes and also some still lifes. Still in brutal honest conversation with the viewer he connects you through the familiar expression of movement, posture and placement of his subjects.

Obert & Jenny Obert has been part of the Rossouw Modern stable since 2004 and was working towards a more contemporary style of painting when Jenny and he met in 2015. Jozua suggested she mentor Obert. She lent him illustrated art books dedicated to the works of Classical and Impressionist artists and while encouraging him to retain his culture suggested experimenting with softer colours and a wider range of subjects, including still lifes. Meanwhile, inspired by Obert’s unusual receptivity and ever-evolving creativity, Jenny found herself being challenged to up her own game – leaving her comfort zone, to tackle larger canvases and being more playful with colour and imagery.
In anticipation and preparation of the show, a healthy competitive spirit has evolved between the two. Their artistic journey is set to continue into the future to the professional benefits of both painters. The current exhibition ‘Mentor – 2 Visions’ is the direct result of that exciting journey. Jenny decided to let go 100% and allow the still life objects to find their own spaces. At the same time she was moving away from her famous blues to French grey’s, which better illuminated the newly emerging colour palette. With the process Jenny used, having decided to allow the objects to go where they wanted, she found that when she was preparing the canvas with black primer, to her

Jenny’s lifestyle still influence the objects which appear, giving the viewer a biographical footprint of Jenny Jackson the artist. Obert also had a major breakthrough, Following the mentorship of Jenny he confronted his own urban environment and civilization. He had found his new subjects. His process changed from a technical point of view - he was painting what he was thinking, he now makes sketches before he paints giving him a broader perspective. Under Jenny’s influence, he’s palette has softened.

HE WHO WALKS THE EARTH REACHES…. - Anton Smit Widely revered for his overwhelming heads and monumental sculptures, evoking themes of suffering, reconciliation, glory and sublimation, his works grace public and private collections countrywide and internationally. Anton collects sayings about the relationship between art and the individual artist’s experience of reality. “Art is not to render the visible but to render visible,” he asserts, and his art achieves this in many ways.

Some observers have noted that this is why so many of his pieces, even the most abstract ones, manage to communicate powerfully and emotionally and why his work is possessed of a raw, earthy power that feels innately African. His body of work comprises towering human figures, nudes, impressive heads, masks, hands, angels, floating and stretching figures, warriors as well as abstract works, using mostly steel, metal, fiberglass and bronze. Anton likes to imbue his work with an illusion of movement or gesture, bodies curling up or limbs reaching out to the onlooker, inspirational “action figures “projecting tremendous emotion, a call to movement. He works with metals and stones, also creating a unique iron and polymer cast mixture, which combines metal with several other mediums. It is my go to choice and helpmeet for calm and quiet in chaos. My intention in this exhibition is to create a quiet moment for the viewer. The small rock pool paintings are those intimate spaces left at low tide in Kalk Bay after the turbulence of the sea has withdrawn. Our iconic mountain gives us so much. I once again feel privileged to have explored so much of it. After one particularly devastating fire I took an un-stretched length of canvas up the mountain, wrapping and pulling it around the burnt trees and rocks. I wanted the charcoal left by the fire to do the drawing for me. That is all the drawing there was. Nature’s residue. Painting into it with fire colours, the proteas seem to emerge of their own will. We need the fire to re-generate the natural flora which I have tried to manifest in the larger paintings. As I enter my 8th decade I am aware that the element for that number is Mercury. Every age brings its own reward. I hope that you, the viewer will allow these small tributes to the elements to help you find your own still quiet place within you.

My home and studio look at and listen to the sea. That world below the horizon evokes rich metaphoric suggestion. I often accept the opportunity, my preference for the surreal finding voice in submarine form and folly. In watercolour monotype I’ve found a medium that literally swims into in this play; the press and pencil do the rest. The exhibition includes a series of new pieces which mix these media. Monotype or mono-print is so called because it uses the press to create a one-off artwork. The press

is used as a unique method of transferring an image from matrix to paper. And because it’s a one-off, not part of an identical edition, any other medium or mark can be added to the work. This invites my love of drawing and detail in creating images that I hope pose questions or, at least, a satirical sense of mischief. Other recent woodcut pieces complete my part of the show, including works from the Inverted Angels series of 2-colour prints. The Angels visited me on road trips in the Eastern Cape. “MOK gallery is very proud to exhibit these two artists who combine all aspects of existentiality in their visual art. Graham’s Fine Art Gallery is proud to welcome contemporary artist, Christy Lee Rogers, this spring for her South African solo debut and new collection, Hybrids. Often referred to as the contemporary counterpart of Baroque master painters like Caravaggio and Rubens, Christy Lee Rogers is known for capturing the hope and vulnerability of the human condition in her works. Her capacity to excite the senses while provoking the audience with vivacious movement and purpose, stirs our memory of the straining and cascading bodies, seasoned with emotion, of the Renaissance and Baroque art movements. In her newest collection Hybrids, Rogers assembles hybrid human and flower beings,

photographed underwater in her distinctive technique and style that have earned her international recognition. She then created watercolor and acrylic paintings that were meticulously layered into several of the final images. Inspired by Impressionist painters like Van Gogh and Monet, Baroque artist Jan Davidsz de Heem and contemporary pop artist Takashi Murakami, Rogers uses the flower as a powerful symbol to channel the depth of her heart and soul and respond to a world ripe with corruption and war, in the way she knows best. From life to death, from passion to enlightenment, flowers have had many meanings throughout time. From youth, humility, faith, hope, the divine, beauty, to chastity, fertility, fragility, mourning, hope and rebirth; these blossoming fragile

creatures have historically been one of the most alluring life forms on the planet, and yet one of the most transitory. Representing the ultimate beauty and the natural flow of Mother Nature, the flower has been an influential part of modern, Greek, Asian, Aztec, Egyptian, Chinese - and other cultures and mythology.
Italy, Mexico City to Shanghai, Sao Paulo, Los Angeles and more, and are held in private and public collections throughout the world.
This exhibition not only demonstrates her prolific use of the photographic medium to transform reality, but also her ethereal approach to life itself. One of Rogers’ favorite quotes, as expressed by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in The Little Prince is, “If someone loves a flower of which just one example exists among all the millions and millions of stars, that’s enough to make him happy when he looks at the stars”.
She has been featured in international magazines, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Art China, Elle Decoration, Global Times, The Independent, Casa Vogue, Photo Technique, Photo Korea and others. Rogers’ “Reckless Unbound” is currently housed at Longleat House in the UK; the stately home, which is the seat of the Marquesses of Bath and also home to Renaissance gems of the Italian masters, like Titan’s “Rest on the Flight into Egypt”.
Christy Lee Rogers is a visual artist, originally from Kailua, Hawaii. Her obsession with water as a medium for breaking the conventions of contemporary photography has led to her work being compared to Baroque painting masters like Caravaggio. Boisterous in color and complexity, Rogers applies her cunning photographic technique to a barrage of bodies submerged in water during the night. Rogers’ works have been exhibited internationally from Paris, London,

Most recently, Rogers is exhibiting at the Palazzo Bembo Collateral Exhibition during the 57th Venice Art Biennale.
Rogers’ art has been featured on several album covers, and in 2013, her images were selected for the 2013–2014 performance season of the Angers-Nantes Opera in France. Although she mainly still shoots in Hawaii, Rogers currently lives in Nashville, TN, where she also spends her time as a mother, filmmaker and musician. www.grahamsgallery.co.za

Perceptive Resonance is the latest body of work created by Adriaan Diedericks upon his return from carving in sandstone at the Fourth International Artist Symposium in Neustadt, Germany in August 2017. Hinting at Rodin and Michelangelo works, the show explores themes of identity, masculinity and the ideal form through an experimental and instinctive methodology which combines classical forms with abstractions. Jutting sharp edges are contrasted with smooth surfaces of the human form. Adriaan Diedericks’ (b. 1990, Cape Town) is a South African sculptor based in Strand,

Cape Town. He grew up in rural Piketberg and his upbringing there has had a great impact on his work. After graduating with a Degree in Fine Art from Stellenbosch University in 2012, he completed a apprenticeship with Lionel Smit from 2012 until the end of 2014. He has exhibited extensively in group exhibitions, this will be his sixth solo exhibition. His work can be found in private collections around the world - New York, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Holland, Los Angeles, Australia, Las Vegas, Italy, Belgium, Germany, London, Canada, South Africa and Barbados.

AUGUST HOUSE IS DEAD, LONG LIVE AUGUST HOUSE! The Story of a Johannesburg Atelier. Kim Gurney Fourthwall Books In the east end of the inner city of Johannesburg, a former textiles factory undergoes a dramatic transformation to become, over the next several years, one of the city’s foremost artists studios. When the sale of the building seems imminent, not only must the artists face the daunting prospect of relocation, but a remarkable chapter in the complex narrative of contemporary South African art seems about to close. Sensing the importance of this moment, Kim Gurney, herself a former tenant of the atelier, follows the stories of several of the August House denizens through some of the artworks that came to life in their studios. The result is a fascinating study of the role of the atelier and its artists in South Africa s fractious art world, and a consideration of the relationship between art and the ever-changing city of Johannesburg.

With the eye of an urbanist, artist and resident, Kim Gurney [constructs] a compelling assemblage of individual, visual and urban narratives brilliantly illuminates the complex life of a building, August House, located in inner city Johannesburg. Her cast of characters artists, workers, neighbours, August House and the city lend poignant contours to the ebbs and flows of daily life, the pressures of gentrification, the ruthlessness of poverty, the radicality of the imagination and the ghosts of history. Mabel O. Wilson, Columbia University Kim Gurney is a writer, artist and research associate at the University of Cape Town’s African Centre for Cities (ACC) and the University of Johannesburg s Visual Identities in Art & Design Research Centre (VIAD). Her previous book, The Art of Public Space: Curating and Re-imagining the Ephemeral City (Palgrave, 2015), followed a trilogy of artistic interventions in Johannesburg, and proposed ideas around the commons. Kim lives in Cape Town, South Africa.

THE GOOD READ: THE THEFT OF HELEN ANNE PETRIE The Theft of Helen Anne Petrie, the best case example of fake identity and art value hype by master con artist Glenn Strutt around 2009. Strutt who was allegedly accused of a long line of scams from fake Clarehout’s to Domestic maids, finest work was the Petrie case. It seems that Strutt bought up a few mediocre paintings and personal effects from a Fishhoek deceased estate only to create the most amazing online scam that even to this day continues to fool gullible and lazy art students who don’t fact check their research. The Helen Anne Petrie story was initially broken by The Times of London 2009 after local Paarl born man Glenn Strutt was able to befriend a leading London auction house to believing his produced story regarding the “Brilliant” Helen Anne Petrie who amongst other things almost single handedly brought Apartheid to its knees. In addition her work was collected by everyone from Frank Sinatra countless kings and queens (Please see the fake CV enclosed). Unfortunately the Royal Collection was duped by the story and bought a painting from the auction house. Strutt then capitalized on this purchase and spent more than three years spreading the fictitious CV to the best and creditable SA Art websites. So well written the fake claims of Strutt still to this day come up in High School Art Projects, published and filed in University libraries by those to unawares of planting fake news and claims onto the website. The irony of this is that Helen Anne Petrie who lived a for the most a dire and lonely life with her father and abusive brother behind a high wall, was further abused by a reckless and opportunistic “art dealer” even beyond her death. In this months good read I have included Bianca Capazorio piece as well as followed on by Strutt’s brilliant fake Petrie CV. Strutt was last heard in 2009 when he emailed the editor threatening to sue this newspaper. He may still be living in Scarborough, Cape Town, although claiming online to be a proprietor of a vast art foundation in Switzerland. Value of Cape artist under the spotlight An art dealer has been accused of attempting to cash in on obscure painter’s work Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) 14 Nov 2009 BIANCA CAPAZORIO AN OBSCURE Fish Hoek artist who died in 2006 is in the middle of an art world furore. Glenn Strutt, an art dealer believed to be a Capetonian living in Switzerland, has had some success with major British auction house Bonhams selling three of Helen Anne Petrie’s paintings for a combined total of £280 000 (R3.5 million), believing she was far better known than she really was. But questions started to arise around the artist’s provenance and even her existence, and Bonhams has stopped selling her work. While there is proof Petrie did exist and did some amateur painting in her life, her profile has been inflated through a series of online articles and press releases, which appear to be the work of Strutt or the Strutt Family Trust. Wikipedia has deleted entries on both the trust and Petrie. The claims being made about Petrie include: She travelled extensively in Europe, where she met and worked with Dutch artist Jan Vermeiren – who would only have been six years old at the time. Her paintings are owned by several royal families including the British, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, Japanese, Spanish and Greek royalty. Her paintings were – or are – owned by big name celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Maria Callas, Bill Clinton and David and Victoria Beckham. One piece also referred to Fish Hoek as South Africa’s version of The Hamptons. The reality appears to be that Petrie lived a reclusive life. Some accounts indicate that she lived with her mentally ill brother until he died in 2002, after which she appeared to become mentally ill herself. It is understood she did some painting early in her life, but she disappeared from the scene around 1976, probably due to the death of her parents. A number of these works are believed to have been bought on auction by Strutt.

Press releases on several small and seemingly unchecked websites claim that Petrie was an antiapartheid painter who wrote in her diary that the art taste of her native Cape Town’s “small art public was extremely backward”; hence she sold much of her work in Europe. One such press release states: “Helen Anne Petrie, the woman, the benefactor, the pacifist, the friend. The true matriarch of SA female artists.” A reply to one such post, by a commentator named Carol, said: “Helen Petrie was my parents’ schizophrenic neighbour. Somebody appears to be making her profile far more glamorous than it was.”

Another states that a work was sold to an unnamed United Arab Emirates family for $1.3m (R9.68m) by the Strutt Family Trust. An internet search for the trust reveals several more press releases on many of the same sites as the Petrie releases, stating that the trust had bought into major international companies such as British American Tobacco and Anglo Platinum. No evidence of such buy-ins exists beyond these statements.
Attempts to contact Strutt were unsuccessful. In several press releases he, however, denies any wrongdoing and insists that Petrie is a valuable artist. He has written several pieces attacking journalists, publications and individuals who have disagreed with him, threatening “financial ruin” and legal action.
Earlier this year, Britain’s Sunday Times newspaper ran an article stating that Bonhams and the Queen’s Art collection had been duped into accepting paintings from the unknown artist. Bonhams sold one painting for nearly £15 000 (R184 800). A spokesman for the auction house, Julian Roup, said this week that “in an emerging market like this, where some artists are brand-new to the auction world, one has to be careful. “In this instance the Helen Petrie works came from a client with an impressive collection of South African art. When provenance was sought, he provided a dossier with documents from high-profile UK and South African collectors. “We established that a leading South African bank had acted as executor and trustee of her estate in 2006 and confirmed that she had been a reclusive painter. Since we became aware of the issues surrounding this artist and those trying to promote her work, we no longer sell pictures by this artist.” Artist Mark Hayhurst said he had received e-mailed documentation “proving” the existence of Petrie following a piece he wrote on his site southafricanartists.com. “It showed some basic school records and personal correspondence yet nothing to support the bold claims that her work has long been held
Hayhurst said that after the column had been written he had come into contact with someone who had lived next door to Petrie. “It seems clear that, while this person clearly did exist and was a passable amateur artist, her story seems to have been greatly embellished in a cynical and deliberate attempt to cash in.”

THE GOOD READ International Art Critics and Art lovers alike have divergent opinions as to whether or not Anne was in fact exclusively a Portrait or Seascape painter. This one has to decide based on ones individual taste; general consensus is that her work is truly thought provoking. Anne’s works are not one of a kind. There are those with a faithful regard for natural appearance and others that are of a far more sentimental nature. In certain cases literal interpretation might call a painting incomplete, which Anne considered finished. This authority of the background to speak for the whole is particularly obvious in some of her post depression portraits, yet, the subject being painted and the visual and spiritual force behind it are to perfection - what lies beyond does not have consequence on the soul of the moment. This was Anne’s sentiment on these works; this style can also be noted in certain portraits by Maggie Loubser to name just one. Anne www.artquotes.net could make herself strongly felt in many formats of materials ranging from watercolours, charcoal, pencil, pen, oil or others. It is often maintained that Anne had a outlook on life. On closer examination it appears however that the intimacy and passion of her nature scenes do not possess the self containedness of the portrait or Still life. The visible lack of movement (except the movement of water usually) in her works bear the state of desolation, loneliness and depression. One must bear in mind, however, that these feelings, which were medically diagnosed, were typical of Anne the mentally, emotionally, physically and sexually abused woman and thus created her masterpieces of art in the true inspiration of the moment. In general the viewer may also feel her paintings may appear dominated by anxiety,sarcasm,a sense of her mental state and a kind of passionate pride which she gave free reign on many occasion to her high spirits, sensealnes and even tenderness. The casualness of her subjects, especially watercolours suited Anne exceptionally well since she was often emotionally fragile. One could easily compare certain of her works to those of Peter Wenning who like Anne used nature for the sake of artistic beauty presented by each scene, no matter how unimportant ostensibly. Her impressionism was often more based upon nuances and tonal volumes than colour which often tended to be virile yet sombre. Anne travelled extensively during her lifetime (in many cases as a way to escape her abuser) and created a career painting portraits, landscapes and still life on private and public

commission for leading International and Local Social figures, for Royal Courts of the day and for her own Private collection, amongst others. Anne’s love for the portrayal of the unimportant or overlooked was in keeping with her sympathy for the poor, neglected. This is visible in the two extremes in Anne’s works, on the one hand the ecstasy over the beauty of things such as nature and, on the other hand the sombreness, the awareness of the inevitability of mortality her paintings, especially portraits appear mostly to have been caught in a timeless instant, the here, the now ! She was extremely humble and in her dealings with the oppressed people of the time and generously gave some of her best works to people who approached her at home, or while painting outdoors. Impulsive, yet at the same time exceptionally endowed with idealism and alertness. Anyone who had met Anne was told it was her great love and interest in what was happening politically in the world around her, especially the results of surviving the WW2 depression and the sense of disorganisation of the Jews released from Concentration Camps in Poland, the Apartheid regime that had come into power in South Africa, amongst other things. These moments and visions that inspired her privately each and every day to work on what she referred to as visually illustrating the unnecessary destruction of her and every humans . Her parents kept their rather comfortable Summer House” in Fish Hoek (The Hamptons” equivalent in USA) and were Johannesburg socialites of the day, regular guests at Admiralty House when in the Cape or attending luncheons with Count Labia. Simonstown, the neighbouring village was the Naval Headquarters for the British Navy and at that time South Africa was a jewel Colony of The Empire. In 1938 a relative, who noted the great potential Anne had shown already at a tender age of 5, cut out an article from the Huisgenoot, a local magazine, dated 18 August, entitled” Hoekom ek skilder” (”Why I Paint”) by now renowned artist Maggie Loubser, on a particularly hot summers day while on holiday from Boarding School this article was translated from Afrikaans into English for Anne by her multilingual nanny. A diary entry records Anne was truly mesmerised at the contents and thus her eventual admiration for Maggie and passion to paint was unknowingly (or unwittingly) set. Anne had a privileged education and completed High School

THE GOOD READ with excellent results, merits and awards; she went on to study further. During this tertiary period Anne made 2 trips to Europe touring the leading galleries of Europe, taking down some 2300 pages of handwritten notes. Florence was her favourite, then Rome. Returning to South Africa she began painting oils on her own, and with tuition soon began to lay the foundation of what was to mature distinctive into her own style. Anne felt that at the time the taste of small art-public was extremely backward and that there were too few discerning collectors and buyers, especially in South Africa, at that point still an Empire Colony. In 1954 she spent a short period of time sitting in on lectures at the Kunsakedemie van Mechelen, Sint Niklaas and Antwerp, where she met artist Jan Vermeiren who assisted her in mastering her least favourite mediums, acrylic and pastels. During her many foreign travels especially during the early years of her life after finishing school many important people of the day sat for portraits for which she was well paid funding further visits to galleries and the odd art class at the Byam Shaw Goldsmith’s School of Art in London and under Sickert’s (Royal Academy School) own school in Camden Town. Here she struck up a friendship with Cecil Higgs. At the same time Anne met Mary (May) Ellen Hillhouse, who like Anne had Scottish Heritage (and acquaintance to her parents), together they consulted on what they both declared was soul destroying commercial works also resulting in Anne becoming (like May) an illustrator for various local and foreign companies, excelling in her graphic design for pottery, pattern design for Garlicks and Greatermans and Butterick Dress patterns, to name just a few. At the same time she made, thanks to her Fathers intervention, occasional visits to the Platteland” farm of Maggie Loubser father in at Klipheuwel near Malmesbury. Anne spent many hours brooding over the vision Maggie had acquired during her trip to London, so, just Like Maggie, Anne spent some time in Germany where she experienced the works of Marc and Nolde. The bud of interest, observing and consulting had slowly germinated and soon blossomed spectacularly. In 1955 upon meeting Marjorie Wallace and husband Jan Rabie they ended up in a heated debate on politics and thus was cemented her lifelong interest in humanitarian causes in South Africa. Anne could be very opinionated and outspoken. In 1960 Anne was infuriated by the countrywide protests, demonstrations and strikes against the Pass Laws and Police brutality in response to the
anti-Pass Laws campaign that she wished to return to Scotland, her Ancestral home indefinitely. This faze passed. In 1961 Anne spent a few weeks in private tuition with Gillian Ayres at the Bath Academy of Art, Corsham and again at St. Martin’s School of art in London. In the few surviving works by Anne of this period one can clearly note that she did not look to the raw expressionism of the New York School but to the school of Paris with its painterly cuisine and basic figuration. A year later Anne wrote to Gillian indicating that in her opinion there was still a continent left to explore in the direction of colour when it came to painting and that although proportion and balance are essential aspects to remember, both artist and viewer have to experience it. For Anne it appeared that in general amongst her British contemporaries the size of their canvass was increasing, the paint was fattening and forms were becoming more and more abstract. Though in many of Anne’s work of this period one notes disciplined serene, contenmplative work in hard-edge idioms. Her work in this faze of artistic experimentation is very much concerned with balance, harmony, tension, pleasure, movement, beauty and mental fragility. In 1965 during a brief encounter at Stellenbosch University while attending a lesson on graphic design at the department of Creative Art she briefly met Jogen Bergen and took hand written notes describing him in her diary as a man with; limited talents In 1967 Mr. Albert Wert (Then Curator of the Pretoria Art Museum) together with Matthys Bokhorst (Director of the S.A.National Gallery) enquired to Anne Petrie being willing to participate in the SANLAM Art Collection Exhibition, which at that point contained in excess of 166 works of art, she declined to participate as the collection did not possess that degree of inner unity it would have had if the collection had from the beginning been built up for the purpose of exhibition, and that the initial intention of the SANLAM collection was merely to build up a collection of attractive South African paintings and sketches to hang in the offices of the Directors and staff and to let the public only share in the collection by means of printing the paintings (Including hers) on SANLAM’s CALENDARS. Diary entries indicate that she also declined an offer from Rembrandt Van Rijn Art Foundation to purchase her works privately. Anne did however exhibit in South Africa twice in 1967, the most important exhibition being from 30 October till 11 November at the South African Association of Artists Annual Exhibition at 63

THE GOOD READ Burg Street, Cape Town, where leading art Critic of the day, Johan van Rooyen stated her 3 works titled - Indian Girl, Bantu Boy and Late Afternoon, Kommetjie should be hailed as proving the standard that is expected at an exhibition of this calibre, which included works by fellow artists I.Roworth, S.Butler, V.Volschenk and L. Mears. In 1971 Anne declined an invitation from Gunther van der Reis to participate in the 1971 Republic Festival Exhibition” which was organised by the S.A.Association of Artists, however decided to exhibit in Tel Aviv that year instead. Anne’ s works were exhibited in the late 60’s early 70’s at various galleries in RSA where she obtained critical acclaim (often relenting and allowing a portrait or landscape to be exhibited without a credit being published on the Program), however, shy and disillusioned at the politics involved in favouritism towards Afrikaans artists, predominantly males she stopped exhibiting at most major galleries of the day, and rudely declined many invitations to sell her art to Insurance or Banking related Institutions on many occasions. Anne noted in her personal diary in 1972 that 2 major schools of thought were apparent in the South African art world amongst contemporary artists. One, where they identified themselves with various aspects of their Social and Geographical environmental conditions. The other identify in itself with International trends which could often be related to Colonialism and the Empire environment. Both trends appeared at that time to be the natural result of a maturing and divorcing itself from its old rural and Colonial character. Anne felt that Nations were becoming more and more involved, inter-active and demanded greater effort from the viewer. During the 1970’s 80’s and 1990’s Anne never tried to idealise her subjects. She always strove for the accurate representation of everyday, apparently casual or overlooked subjects. Her devotion to her art, especially during her latter years was so great that she also infected her fellow artists, resulting in anti - art people being able to view art with greater respect and admiration and she mentally and emotionally lived in many worlds. By this time Anne was mentally very fragile to the point of institutionalisation. She never managed to deal mentally with the death of her Parents. In the Transvaal and in the Western Cape she discovered the destruction caused by the introduction of the Group Areas Act that stimulated her imagination. In In Europe; mainly Italy and Scotland she sought the dream world for which she deeply yearned.

Finally, there was her own private inner world, to which very few were ever admitted, but, from which she derived her wonderful creative and inspired powers. Of these worlds for Anne Cape Town was certainly not the most important. Anne’s works already belong to the Art history of South Africa, Royal Courts of Europe and Asia , Private Collectors and various Museums globally. Even so it meant much to her, not only because she found relief there for her bodily ills, but in the autumns and winters there she re-discovered her homeland and thus her identity. Amongst her friends, fellow artists and local Inhabitants especially the Cape Coloured and Cape Malay people Anne felt she could be who she truly felt she was, a woman who seldom made preparatory cause of her impulsive nature. Helgaard Steyn Award for Sculpture in 2017 The Helgaard Steyn Trust The Helgaard Steyn Trust was established in the estate of Dr J H (Jan) Steyn (1902-1983), an old boy of the former Grey University College (now the UFS), late MP for Potchefstroom and director of companies. The Trust is named after Dr Steyn’s father, past MPC for Bloemfontein and youngest brother of M T Steyn, the last president of the Orange Free State Republic.
