“World through the blinds” (Self Portrait) Watercolor, 22”x15”

"I always look for a subject that evokes mood and story. I am primarily a figurative artist. Creating a character that viewers can relate to is my goal, conversation, and story. Watercolor is a very challenging, unpredictable medium. It keeps me alert and on edge, just like life. I paint wet-into-wet: wetting both sides of the paper and using thick cotton fabric as a base. The soaked fabric feeds water to the paper, allowing me to paint for hours without it getting dry. As a result, the colors remain fresh and clean, and I am able to paint in several sessions.

To create a variety of textures and edges, I control the moisture with lint-free paper towels. I avoid frisket, instead leaving the white of the paper for highlights or lifting them out while the paper is still moist. Daniel Smith granulating watercolors are particularly helpful in adding texture and creating rich, painterly darks.”

Light is the main character in every successful painting.
