ARTISTS MAKERS TRAILS

Welcome to Artwave, our annual festival of artists and makers across the Lewes district. This edition offers you even more than ever, with seven different trails to follow with over 500 artists; an Art on Film feature and our Stay Longer pages with top tips of other places to visit in the area. You will see plenty of returning artists and venues this year, but we also welcome new ones and new partner sponsors too. We are delighted to be working with Brighton & Hove Buses and Compass Travel and encourage you to take the bus or train to get around the festival where possible. Artwave is managed and supported by Lewes District Council, but it wouldn’t be possible without the kind sponsorship from our supporters and entry fees from venues and advertisers to cover the costs. Artwave is proudly put together by a fabulous team who hope you enjoy all that is on offer this year. “My aim is to encourage and affirm wildlife conservation throughout the district and I invite you to enjoy the diversity of art on offer in our natural world, in particular in Lewes Railway Land and at Castle Hill nature reserves. I hope you get some time in our wonderful open spaces during your visit and if not, come back and visit again!” Councillor Stephen Gauntlett, Chair of Lewes District Council Artwave was brought to you by Jackie Blackwell, Manager for Tourism and Arts, Lewes District Council Charlotte Parsons, Artwave Co-ordinator charlotteparsons.co.uk Carlotta Luke, Designer and Photographer (brochure) carlottaluke.com Peter Bushell, Designer (maps) peterbushell.co.uk Helen Browning-Smith, Artwave Assistant, Lewes District Council Volunteers: Liza Mackintosh, Nick Cannan, Corina Buckwell, Shannon Sait, Emma Herian Front cover art: Victor Stuart-Graham victorstuartgraham.com

STORIES SEEN THROUGH A GLASS PLATE, 1914-1918: LEWES REMEMBERS 19 AUGUST – 24 SEPTEMBER An exhibition of 80 light boxes in 65 windows throughout Lewes

Another chance to see this internationally acclaimed exhibition, now enhanced with additional images and audio trail online – see reevesarchive.co.uk Leaflets available from Lewes Tourist Information and Edward Reeves Photography, 159 High St, Lewes BN7 1XU Edward Reeves is believed to be the world’s oldest continually operated photographic studio. Today it houses an amazing archive of images which is both a unique record of the daily life of Lewes and the history of commercial photographic practice.

This is the dramatised true story of Café iconic artist, Frida Kahlo (Salma Hay ek) and her husband Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), the larger-than-life painters who became the most accl aimed artists in Mexican history, and whose tempestuous love affair and outrageous personalities made them legendary. The film chronicles the turbulent period of 1920s & 30s whe n socialism was the fashionable caus e for the art world until the arrival of Stalin. The political issues of the era are front and centre in the film, perf ectly integrating them with the tumultuous relationship at the story's core.

Pruden and Smith are designers and craftsmen in precious metals whose passion for contemporary design shows in everything they do. Their gallery and new display area within, their adjoining workshops, on Ditchling Crossroads showcases their work in gold, platinum, and silver incorporating diamonds and unusual gemstones from all over the world. This year look out for new designs featuring 2000 year old Roman glass from Afghanistan. They offer a complete design-to-make service for any item in precious metal from engagement rings to

NORTH TRAIL 15 chalices. They can also incorporate or redesign your existing jewellery in a process they call ‘A Precious Legacy’. Designer Rebecca Smith takes inspiration and materials from your existing jewellery collection to generate designs for new pieces. It ensures that your jewellery is out of your jewellery box and worn whilst maintaining the sentimental connection to past pieces. Many of the designs on display are to generate ideas for this process. During the festival take a tour of their workshops of 30 years, then follow with a look at their history by visiting Ditchling Museum of Art and Craft, which features the work and tools of Anton Pruden’s grandfather, Dunstan, silversmith on The Guild of St Joseph and St. Dominic. prudenandsmith.com
