Rachel Entwistle Jewellery designer, Rachel Entwistle has one of those memorable last names that you want to roll it around on your tongue a few times before saying it out loud, which was exactly what we found ourselves doing on our way to Thor & Wistle, the collaborative boutique jewellery shop and studio space that she shares with fellow jewellery designer Kamilla Thorsen. And just like her name, her unique jewellery collections are unforgettable, so much so that she was nominated for New Designer of the Year at the UK Jewellery Awards 2012 and won the International Jewellery London Editor’s Choice for Originality. After we had a good perusal of the space (also nominated for Store Design and Boutique Retailer of the Year 2013) that artfully displays her designs on vintage books, mirrors, antlers and antique busts, we asked her a few questions about how she makes her collection and who she’d like to collaborate with. Art Wednesday: Where did you grow up and how long have you been in London? Rachel Entwistle: I was born in London and my family on both sides are originally from London, but I grew up mainly in Norwich. I moved back to the capital after studying for my BA 13 years ago with a 4 year break in Mexico and central America in between. AW: How do you like to work? Are you a night owl or do you stick to strict working hours during the day? RE: I work pretty long hours, sometimes 6-7 days a week, but try not to work after 7/8pm. AW: How does your work take form? What’s the process it goes through from idea to finished design? RE: I research and read around a subject for a few months, getting the concepts together and developing the meaning behind the concept. Once I have the concept, I begin to sketch and develop the ideas, and draw them into full designs. The drawings are followed by hand forming or CAD with other elements being introduced such as hand engraving, soldering, gold plating or oxidising, as well as detailed wire work. 16

AW: How many people do you have working with you and what do they do? RE: I have one full-time studio assistant who works on the production side of things. I have a business partner with our store Thor & Wistle and we have someone who works in the store for us, who is focussed on sales.

AW: If you could design for one person, celebrity or otherwise, who would it be? And who would you ideally like to collaborate with?

RE: Quiet. I like to have prolonged periods of silence or just music that is conducive to working.

RE: I am not really into one celebrity or person. I would like to design jewellery for musicians to wear, for example anyone from the XX to Natasha Khan. Angelina Jolie recently borrowed some pieces but they weren’t right for the outfit – she would be a good match for my designs though if she ever did find the occasion! But in general I like to design and give something of myself in each collection so anyone who vibes with that I am designing for really. Anyone who is inspired by the same concepts and appreciates the aesthetic of my work.

AW: How long have you been in the studio? Where is it in London?

I’d like to collaborate with Tim Walker, I love his work.

RE: We have been in our current studio/ store for 1 year and 4 months. It is in Shoreditch, London.

AW: And favourite personal piece you’ve designed?

AW: What’s your background into jewellery? Where did you study and are there any creatives in your family who inspired you?

RE: The Sun, Moon and Four Elements Stacker ring from my latest Alchemical Collection. I am really inspired by symbolism and meaning and like each piece I design to have a deeper significance, as well as an aesthetic appeal. I love that the design combines such powerful symbols as well as featuring extra details like the hidden alchemy inscriptions on the inner band of the Sun and Moon rings. Each ring can also be worn separately so you get a variety of wears from one piece.

AW: Are you clean or tidy? Or do you like to work in organised chaos? RE: Definitely organised chaos with blitzes! AW: Are you noisy or do you prefer to work in quiet?

RE: My family are quite bohemian. I spent most of my time growing up surrounded by nature, making things, being at festivals or travelling in holidays, as well as reading and learning. My mum is very hands on and practical, and I remember always making things with her. I spent my teenage years making clothes to be able to wear so that I had something different and unique to my peers. At the time of deciding what to study I was 50:50 between the academic and the arts route. Fascinated by sociology and social anthropology I chose to study for a BA in Cultural Studies. After working for various NGOs for quite a few years, I decided to travel and to try and work out how to fulfil my creative streak. I ended up in Mexico, where I initially studied jewellery with local artisans and then went on to study at the University of the Arts in Taxco. I eventually returned to the UK and continued studying at Holts Academy of Jewellery. AW: Favourite music/track to work to? RE: The XX have been a continued favourite soundtrack in the studio. AW: What’s next/projects in the pipeline? RE: Starting to design for my next collection. It’s all under wraps at present!

Bands hit London armed with guitars, bedroom recording gear and dreams of musical revelry everyday, but Splashh poke their heads way out of the pile. Sasha, Toto, Tom and Jacob make wistful, good-time, fuzzy guitar pop that whisks you away with them on the thrillseeking adventures of their young minds. And thanks to a little help from artist, photographer and brother of Toto - Cosmo MacDonald—they’re in control over their visual identity too. Describe Splashh. Sasha: It’s just about having a good time, man: a little bit nostalgic, and heavy and dreamy. Just listen to us if you want to have a good time! What was the first thing you did this morning? Sasha: Mate, I woke up and skulled 3 pints of w ater and went back to sleep.Toto: I woke up with Sasha calling me.The conversation was like,“Alright mate.Yeah, just woke up.Alright, I’m going to go back to sleep, I’ll call you later.” Pick... a song. Sasha: Blue Jay Way’s pretty wicked. It’s kind of got all of the elements, really. It’s only one chord the whole time, but the way George Harrison makes it work with all these different melody lines... and the production’s just out of control. ...a place in the world: Toto: I really want to go to South Amer- ica... Brazil. Coming from Australia, it’s always got to be a beach, because that’s the only way of escaping, you know? Sasha: Switzerland would be pretty sick. Having a little chalet in Switzerland, man. Sit by the fire and drink scotch. There’s two opposites—Switzerland and then Brazil. Maybe do a winter and a summer album. Or California. I think I’d probably like the girls in California; they always seem pretty sweet. Have a party on a Jeep Wran- gler, man, just cruising around with some Californian babes. Toto: No fake tans there! ...a drink: Sasha: Man, I love cocktails! Toto: Something with lychees. Sasha:Yeah, lychees are always good, man.The one we had the oth- er night. That was lychee, grapefruit juice, gin and orange peel. That was a good one.Toto:You can’t go wrong with a classic margarita! Sasha: I’m a big fan of watermelon ones as well, man... tropical shit! An old fashioned is good too, in the winter. ...a feeling: Sasha: Just dizzy, man.Toto: Surprise. Feeling surprised. Sasha: Feeling happy’s always pretty good... feeling groovy! Toto: Feeling warm, that’s a good one. Especially here! 24

Silken Favours Silken Favours create beautiful hand-illustrated, playful printed designs inspired by nature. Using traditional pen and ink techniques, Creative Director Vicki Murdoch whips the colourful kitsch designs into gorgeous garments such as shorts, scares and silky shirts – the perfect trans-seasonal pieces. We entered Vicki’s wonderfully magical world for a Studio Visit last week, to discover more about how the blond bombshell works and what makes her tick. Art Wednesday: Where did you grow up and how long have you been in London?

AW: Are you clean or tidy? Or do you like to work in organised chaos?

Vicki Murdoch: I grew up in Aberdeen in the North East of Scotland, moved to London when I was 18 and I’ve been here ever since.

VM: I like to think I’m clean and tidy, but I do enjoy collecting stuff and lots of it, so my studio is busy with it all. I’m not into simplicity when it comes to design or interiors.I tend to have major clean-up organising days, but they are rare.

AW: How you like to work, are you a night owl or do you stick to strict working hours during the day? VM: Since I work for myself my hours are flexible. I’m not an early riser, so get to my studio around ten o’clock most days, but this does mean I tend to be there till pretty late. If it’s a busy period I get up earlier, finish later and have wonderful worky weekends.

VM: When I’m designing I love noise, music fullblast and chatter. I can also be quite noisy when I’m not actually in work mode, but when I’m at my desk I tend to be quiet, except for outbursts of excitement or annoyance.

AW: How does your work take form and what’s the process it goes through from idea to finished design?

AW: What’s your background into fashion? Where did you study and were you inspired by any artists or creatives in the family?

VM: It all starts with researching a concept, usually involving extremely super-cute animals, which can suck hours out of my week. Then I start to draw. My drawing style is very intricate and I use a really thin, inked pen. Again, this sucks hours of my week. Next comes the technical bit when I scan in and manipulate my work on to software. My designs are all digitally printed in the UK and manufactured in London. I started with silk scarves which are quite simple to finish and have now expanded into silk cushions, shirts, dresses and shorts.

VM: I studied at Camberwell then Chelsea art school, specialising in digitally printed textiles. My dad is a retired Architect, my mum writes poetry and my sister also loves drawing and painting, she’s also a wonderful musician! Oh and my brother has some incredibly creative dance moves.

AW: How many people do you have working with you and what do they do? VM: It’s me myself and I – plus a couple of interns when I need more help. They help with everything in the running of the studio: production, pick-ups, deliveries and admin. And without them I’m pretty sure I’d be having mini breakdowns most days.

32

AW: Are you noisy or do you prefer to work in quiet?

AW: How long have you been in the studio and where is it in London? VM: I’ve been in my studio for about 7 years. It’s an old textile factory in Hackney. I used to live/work from it, but now it’s just my studio. Having the separation from work definitely helps my sanity, AW: Favourite music or track to work to? VM: I can listen to Joni Mitchell’s ‘Blue’ on repeat forever. If I need to concentrate, Brian Eno’s album ‘Music for Airports’ has a beautiful constant, repetitive sound that allows me to concentrate on my work. But if I just want a song to fill me with pure joy and make me dance around the studio it’s ‘Seabird’ by the Alessi Brothers. AW: What’s next? Do you have any projects in the pipeline? VM: I’m working on the final finishing touches to Spring/Summer 2014, which I’ll be showing in Paris this September, then straight into Autumn/Winter 2014. I’m in the initial stages of a collaboration in swimwear and I’m going to be making shirts for guys, which I’m very excited about. AW: If you could design for one person celebrity or otherwise, who would it be? And who would you ideally like to collaborate with? VM: Her Majesty, the Queen, has two of my scarves. Not sure if she actually wears them though, maybe in the privacy of her own Castle. I would love David Bowie and his wife Iman to wear one of my scarves or shirts, or maybe just sit on my cushions. Burberry, Mulberry or maybe Louis Vuitton would be a nice collaboration, not that I’m aiming high. AW: And favourite personal piece you’ve designed? VM: They change from season to season, but my favourite at the moment is my grumpy cat cowboy shirt, because who doesn’t want a grumpy cat cowboy shirt, with tassels? Well I do!
